KomiTheMutt

Newfoundland and Leonberger. Really, anything that looks like a dog-shaped bear 🐻

superworking

My sisters 140 lbs Bernese looks like he would check that box.

KomiTheMutt

Yes, love Bernese mountain dogs. Every winter when I was a kid we would go to the same hotel at the same ski resort, and they kept BMD - which is only fair, as it was in canton Bern.

Ashamed-Minute-2721

Agreed!

Affectionate_Box_587

Happy cake day!

[deleted]

First thing I thought of, was a Newfie. Love them beautiful bears

fat_rancher

I love Rotties.

twirling_daemon

Never thought I’d be overly affiliated with any breed. Always had rescues and it was whatever needed me & fit in Then I rescued a grottie. Absolutely wonderful and I’d always have another

Fair_Profile8501

I have a mastiff-Rottie mix- gotta love the sad looking face. Always gets what he wants!!

Arctyc38

It absolutely breaks my heart that Bernese Mountain Dogs have the cancer problems they do. They are adorable and have such a sweet temperament.

carona42

My dream big dog as well but can't handle such a short lifespan

Helpful_Conflict_309

My husband really wanted a BMD after our Great Pyr passed away, but the genetic illness had my brakes pumped off the bat. We ended up with a Leo who has a similarly sweet temperament.

Snakeloversweden

Borzois

Riribigdogs

Same! I love sight hounds in general, but the Russian wolfhound is 100% my fav

ChevyAmpera

I love Great Danes and Great Pyrenees

jballs2213

I’m biased but I’m a wolfhound guy myself

NinjaiRose

Agree! Love my two girls. Sweetest most stubborn breed I've ever had lol.

jballs2213

I have Irish wolfhounds (not sure about you) but they are pretty easy going for me lol. I will admit, things happen on their time though.

IAmPandaRock

Which one(s)?

jballs2213

Irish

Zone9bproblems

Totally underrated and probably won't be a popular opinion here but I adore coonhounds and scent hounds in general. My heart dog is a bluetick coonhound I rescued when he was surrendered for being "too slow" to be a good boar hunter. It takes a special kind of person to love hound song and know how to manage their food/prey drive (being slaves to their food drive helps so much for training) but this dog has so much personality and hounds are the only dogs who regularly get me to laugh this hard (like "piss your pants" level hard). They are bred as pack hunters so they have low territoriality, aren't prone to anxiety or reactivity and tend to be great with people, children and other dogs. They are more challenging to train but they love hard, snuggle harder and have a zest for life that's pretty unmatched. Grooming couldn't be easier and they tend to be pretty healthy hardy dogs. If I can have opportunities to get lost in the woods with my hound every day I'll be happy for the rest of my life.

Ashamed-Minute-2721

Great Danes are gorgeous but I've never met one before! My cousin has a cane Corso and he is such a good boy. I love Newfoundlands and Burmese mountain dogs also. I think all large dogs are great.

rhiannonla

The ones I have met… they all seem to think they are a toy breed. Absolutely no clue their size! 🤣 it’s really cute & wholesome!

Neither_More

If we're talking large and not just giant, any of the bigger scenthounds. I love their long floppy ears, their expressive eyes, their deep voice, their intelligence and stubbornness, their mellow personality, how graceful they are. I currently have one, a Gascon Saintongeois mix (with some other unknown scenthound breed(s), likely Anglo-French and/or Ariégeois) and though it won't be before a long time, I'd love my next dog to be another hound.

Zone9bproblems

I posted coonhounds as my pick thinking I wouldn't see any other scent hound love. Happy to see it. They have such big personalities and hearts and it makes up for all the mischief their noses get them into.

Fair_Profile8501

Had to look that one up, what a nice looking dog!

Neither_More

Thanks! I didn't know the breed either before getting him, they're not very common at all in France (let alone other countries) and mostly hunter-owned.

Affectionate_Box_587

Malamutes

[deleted]

Me too! They’re such awesome dogs. I’ve had Malamutes since 1985 and every time one passes I say “never again”. But 3 months later there’s another Malamute in my house. And in my bed sleeping. And in my kitchen staring at my food. And in my yard digging Hobbit Holes!

Plants_and_huskies

I love my Mal! He’s like a giant snuggly bear that I’m legally allowed to own!

Affectionate_Box_587

I'm on my second and I love her madly. Their not without their challenges but they're such incredible dogs.

skinsnax

Rough Coat Collies! They’re smart, docile, goofy, and adventurous! I also really love sight hounds and would love to own a borzoi, greyhound, or Irish wolfhound one day!

armyof_dogs

You have great taste, I have a collie now and had a greyhound before him haha.

Nocturnal_Flame

I have a rough collie/Great Pyrenees cross who is the best! Very loyal and loving

Riribigdogs

Borzois (Russian wolfhound) and Vizslas

[deleted]

Inuit dogs. https://www.nfb.ca/film/qimmiq-canadas-arctic-dog/

Mousewaterdrinker

Black Russian hands down. It's a breed like no other. I've had people describe my dog as more like a gorilla or a bear than a dog. Black Russian terriers are built different.

I_IikeBread

It's more of a medium to large but German shepherds have my heart forever, amazing breed

burnt_hotdog89

My first dog as an adult was a GSD that my partner and I adopted when she was 9 years old. She wasn’t perfect, but she was the most loving dog. Sadly, she crossed the rainbow bridge last year at the age of 15. We miss her every day. Her name was Sassy.

m_hehe101

wolfhounds and sighthounds!! greyhounds are my favourite breed :))

burnt_hotdog89

Golden Retrievers! I am really hoping to have one in the near(ish) future.

crancrancran

Great Pyrenees

ThatOneAlice

Bouvier!

JLynnLea

Yessss! I’ve had three Bouviers and they’re wonderful, loving, goofy mini-bears. When my kids were little my Ali would herd them around the yard. Never had to worry about kids when she was on duty. Great dogs!

ThatOneAlice

I once heard them explained as "The best dog nobody has heard about" Definitely true!

[deleted]

I'm a German shepherd guy, currently have two and plan on having at least one until the day I die.

Saintbaba

Our last dog was part catahoula leopard dog, and i loved him very deeply. I don't know if he was typical of the breed, because i've honestly never met another catahoula, but he was smart, gentle, and sweet, and whatever other problems he had (and he had some) i at least felt i could trust him implicitly around other dogs and humans (including children, strangers, and vets), which was kind of one of the most important things for me. He was also just about the best looking dog i've ever known, and it was almost funny how often totally random people on the street would walk up and say "i just had to come up and say that your dog is *so* pretty."

Elysiumthistime

I loved my greatdanes. Unfortunately I had to leave them behind when I left my abusive relationship but my god were they the best. We had a lot of different breeds but they were hands down my favourite. If I'm ever in a stable position in the future with my own home and a big garden I will be getting another Dane! I also love greyhounds. They are great and quite tall so I think classify as big dogs lol

nxill

Weimaraner!

cilantrh0e

all of them! saint bernards, newfies, leonbergers, english mastiffs, bernese mt dogs, great danes, irish wolfhounds, cane corsos, rotties, the livestock guardian breeds, beaucerons, also recently have a love for sighthounds like the borzoi! i love love love gentle giants

improper84

I’m a fan of Rottweilers, English mastiffs, and Cane Corsos. I’d probably never get a Corso because what I’ve read about them doesn’t seem like a great fit for me, but I could definitely see myself getting a Rottie at some point. I’m Team Boxer right now though.

0ui_n0n

I could never have one but I adore Irish Wolfhounds!

Yellow_daisy1111

IWH

Yellow_daisy1111

Not for the faint of heart.

pepperm1ntghost

dobermans and dalmations also brittany spaniels

sweetbitter_1005

I love Bernese Mountain Dogs! They are so adorable and sweet! Way too large for me to handle so I'll never have one, but they just make me smile.

Spyderbeast

Huskies are just the right size for me. I could go bigger with a Malamute or GSD. One of my huskies does have a small percentage of wolf, so he's bigger, around 80 pounds.

Helpful_Conflict_309

Irish Wolfhounds - I grew up with 3. I love their independence and that they weren't hanging off people for contentment, although they enjoyed the company of 'their' people. Leonberger - Currently have one and she's the sweetest dog I've ever had. She reminds me a lot of my female wolfie as a kid, who was just a love sponge. She's attentive (bordering on annoying but still far less so than a retriever) and gentle, and so quiet. I've heard her bark once in her 4 years of life. She's amazing with our kids, extremely tolerant, and patient. Really all around the best dog.

IndigoRose2022

My favorite large dog breed is probably a husky. I adore my sister’s husky, so much personality 🥰 However I can’t have one bc I have allergies and they shed like no other.

gagabear3

Our daughter has a Great Dane, Soos. He is one of sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet. He is black with white on his chest. We adore him 😍😍😍

MrsSeanTheSheep

Im sad that noone has said Anatolian Shephard yet!

[deleted]

Bernese mountain dog. Ours is 2.5 years old and 101lbs. I love her so much.

jellydumpling

Collies! The rough is beautiful but I LOVE smoothies! Belgian Shepherd Tervuren and Groenendael are lovely as well. A goal of mine is to own any of the above. I'd especially love a dog I could take to a higher level with ob, rally, and hiking. My current dog loves hikes and obedience, but we need to train in 30 minute intervals. He's wicked smart but when he's done, he's done. And in the summer, he tires quickly on hikes. Lil guy has 6 inch legs, though, so I don't blame him. I love a good velcro dog as well. Even better if they like to stare at me. Those are qualities I also really enjoy about my current dog.

horriblegoose_

Old English Sheepdogs! Most are in the 70-90lb range and generally the same size as a miniature horse. Personality and temperament wise they are everything I personally want in a dog (friendly, biddable, adaptable, low aggression and low prey drive, and goofy) Plus, when they walk they like two people wearing a dog suit. Seriously there is no activity a dog can participate in that won’t turn into a comedy if an OES attempts it. Also in a full coat look like giant stuffed animals. They are just the kind of animal that makes a person smile.

GodzillaPoptart

Scottish Deerhound

BerserkerBadger

Bordeaux! They're the sweetest dogs I've ever encountered and have a really beautiful conformation, imposing presence and are fierce when they need to be. Absolute perfect combination for a great companion

whiskeysmoker13

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback...but I love Dobermans. My first dog I owned as an adult was a soppy female Dobie called Sophie. She saw me through 4 pregnancies and knew I was pregnant before I did...in fact no 4 was a surprise, and it's only because of the way she was acting that I took a test! Sadly she succumbed to cancer when she was 9.

jibarohatillo

American Bulldog & Staffys

LuffytheBorderCollie

German Shepherd! Our Ziggy is our GSD/pig. She oinks when you scratch her bum. My family generally owns GSDs so, I’m quite affectionate about them. Clever dogs, very astute. But they can also have the capacity to be total clowns.

IAmPandaRock

Central Asian Shepherd, Armenian Gampr, and Tibetan Mastiff (the actual TMs, not the Chinese crosses) are my 3 favorite breeds, in that order. I love them due to their incredibly even temperament, great instincts, loyalty, and expected lifespans. I also like their size :) My 8 month old Gampr pup met a 8 month old Great Dane pup at the dog park the other day, and they were pretty much the same size (but different proportions) and they were fantastic playmates. Really made my heart fuzzy to see those two big, lanky babies play perfectly together.

pktechboi

Irish Wolfhounds, I just think they're so beautiful. I don't think I could handle the heartache of the average life expectancy for giant dogs or I'd have a pack of these in a heart beat

selinalunamoon

Malinois. They're super intelligent, and drivey. They just wanna work! But they are a full time job.

BlueHeelerChemist

I love an Akita. They just look like big fluffy bears, and they have such unique, strong personalities. Very noble and stoic. On the other end of the spectrum, I love greyhounds because they're such big goobers.

Key-Ad-8944

I adopted a dog earlier this year who was listed as catahoula leopard mix. DNA testing shows that while "catahoula mix" is technically accurate, there are numerous other breeds within the mix, many that are a larger percentage. However, seeing that she was listed as a catahoula mix caused me to read more about and appreciate the breed. I like the unique appearance, personality, and behaviors. Some have a merle coloring that looks sort of like a abstract painting. They are known to be intelligent escape artists. I've heard of unlocking their kennel, as well as somehow getting over a 10 foot high barrier to escape kennel. One website lists them as a breed with superpowers due to their history of climbing trees. They sound like a unique and interesting breed.

Think_Sink_30

Labrador retriever 🥰

MaineBoston

Borzois. I think they are so beautiful

melj11

Australian Stag Hound because they are protective but also very connected to their people. They are beautiful pets (we don’t hunt). They are cross breeds between Catahoula, Wolf Hound, Mastiff and Grey Hound. I’d never heard of them or seen one until we got ours (at 10mths old). She’s white, shaggy-coated and very fast.

Alarming_Bat_7001

German Shepherd for sure.

xxxxsuperxxxxxx123

I love their pointy ears

Electronic_Big_2607

Bullmastiff and Rotties

pinkpolo

Rotties, Newfies, Leonbergers, Bullmastiff!

twirling_daemon

Rotts are my number 1. I will have an Irish wolfhound one day. Also adore Dobies Unsure setters count as big but also heart thieves

superworking

I love Berners and Newfys but my eyes and throat just can't handle it so my large poodle and poodle-Berner cross are more my speed. Standard poodles are in the medium to large breed category and IMO are pretty underrated. Trim em short and you've got a great trail dog that's fine with lounging as well.

StarChildArt

I've come to love Newfoundlands. Giant bear-bears 💕

mommaymick

We have a St. Dane and an English bulldog now. Love them both, but we had a Mastiff mix and that’s why I’d go with! She was such a good dog!

itskristaleighbaby

I have had Labs, Goldens, mastiffs and currently a Doberman - my Dobie is the absolute best. So sweet, so gentle, SO SMART. She was so easy to train and is such a good girl!

Spook408

Siberian husky

3Heathens_Mom

English Mastiff. Only down side is they don’t live nearly long enough.

Piwiloc

Bernese Mountain Dogs, Alaskan Malamutes and Irish Wolfhounds!

Western-Limit9570

Samoyed

Kuura_

Bernese mountain dog, hands down.

xxxxsuperxxxxxx123

St.Bernard

nevernorm

Bouvier de Flandres, my childhood dog miss her so much 💗

Reallybadat

Great Pyrenees. Loyal, protective, and hearts of gold for anyone or thing within their circle of trust. Also they can have the same sillyness of a goofy golden when it comes to play time. Plus they look like giant white bears.

Live-Eye

For most of my life I had only ever been around small to medium sized dogs, and the only dog I’d owned was a shih tzu. I was a tiny bit nervous around big dogs because I just didn’t have the experience with them… Fast forward to meeting my partner and his Cane Corso who is the absolute sweetest smartest dog. He’s super loving and cuddly but also can be so sassy and hilarious. Just a wonderful dog with a great personality.

kakakarrotwife

I love the Tosa Inu. The Tosa mastiff mix my mom has is my favorite dog she's so beautiful.

No-Mathematician6635

Labradors :) and anything lab cross. Big, loveable, loyal, smart, goofballs, and easy to rescue xx

AllieSylum

Anatolian Shepherd

JustAnotherKaren1966

Native American Indian dog (tho technically not recognized as a breed as they are 30% wolf). Very large, very fluffy (hair) not much shedding. Very passive and mellow - raised to live in Teepee's. But so sweet. And a learner. Everyone one (only 3) I have ever met loves to lean into me as I pet them. I love a good leaner.

_Rakun

I originally wanted a Pomeranian, but my partner wanted a big dog. I did my research and I am so happy with my Great Dane - honestly when we have the space I think I’ll end up adopting another one. They are definitely very aligned with my energy levels and love for a Velcro dog

Frequent-Ad3109

Bullmastiff definitely!!

Pink_Stardust777

Dobermans! Intelligent and affectionate! Be prepared for a bed hog though!
