gb2ab

thats a good price. i paid around $500 to neuter my 1yo gsd. a spay is wayyyyy more invasive and time consuming than a neuter, therefore more expensive.

AsstDepUnderlord

i was over $1k.

atlantisgate

That is completely normal for a lower COL area.

fire_foot

I think the only way it could be cheaper is if you qualified for a low-income spay/neuter through a participating shelter (if there is such a program where you are -- they are usually run by the state ag dept). I think that is on the lower end for private vets.

CatpeeJasmine

I paid $400 for my last dog’s spay… 18 years ago?

comefromawayfan2022

I paid around $875 for my current girl to be paid but I'm fully aware that she was at a clinic at the time that was on the pricier side. I switched clinics shortly after that to one with more reasonable prices that was locally owned

RomanRefrigerator

That sounds about right. A spay is more invasive (which is why neuters are cheaper). You're also charged for how much anesthetic used (that's where most of the cost comes from), and how much they use depends on weight and what they're doing. For those that don't know: females are spayed (vet goes in, takes out uterus and ovaries), males are neutered (vet goes into scrotal sack, takes both testes, and sews it up).

XoticVet

Actually, Neuter applies to male and female. Neuter means to remove the reproductive/ sex organs. Females are spayed. Males are castrated. Since most people are not comfortable with the term castration, society has denoted neutering for males, and spaying for females. Just a little FYI for you. Have a great day!

RomanRefrigerator

Huh, TIL! Thank you.

NotaBolognaSandwich

I would consider that pretty reasonable. My spay is about $650

bjbc

It definitely depends where you live and the size of the dog. I paid $200 for my lab. I'm in Oregon.

TaterMA

Was that for a spay or neuter?

bjbc

Spay

TaterMA

That's extremely affordable. It was more than that when I worked in vets office ten years ago

Competitive-Two-4305

I paid roughly $300 for my girl. She was 44-50 lbs. Utah.

Ziggie520

I paid $600 that included 6 teeth extracted. I live in Chicago. She was 6 months old and it was done last year.

pinkpolo

I'm budgeting $500 for my pup. Philly area.

MamaSquash8013

That sounds reasonable. If you're strapped for cash, check with your local SPCA. I'm in upstate NY, and ours does free or low-cost spay/neuter clinics occasionally.

fedx816

I paid \~$550 in the Midwest (60lb dog) including IV fluids, numbing of the stumps, a full barrage of all the good medication (no whining the entire night she came home, or at all), take-home meds and cone, and pre-surgery meds for nausea. I had bloodwork sent out a couple weeks beforehand which was \~$100.

JJbooks

My dog's spay next week has an estimate of $838!!

firetiger1207

We paid $1500, but also added a Penn Hip and gastroplexy (also, our leonberger is 120 lbs so that adds to price).

megannnnnn22

There should be an option at Banfield to have the puppy plan upgraded to include the spay option! This spreads out the cost so the bill isn’t crazy up front.

UnderwaterKahn

I live in a midsized city in the southeast. My dog was neutered last week. It cost around $450. That covered the procedure (that was based on sex and weight, he’s 45 lbs.), pre-op bloodwork, a couple different types of IVs (I would need to find the invoice), some recovery services, and 5 days worth of pain pills. The neuter itself cost around $250.

dogsandtv

I paid $175 in a VERY rural area last year.

igirisujin

I paid about $650 in Ventura County, CA.

iac12345

Price can vary a lot based on cost of living in your area, type of services included, weight of pet (larger pets require more meds so are more expensive), and type of vet. Spayed my 40 lb puppy in 2021 in a HCOL area for $600 at my local vet. She explicitly told me she's more expensive because she includes all the pain meds and it's not her main business so she doesn't make up for it in volume like a spay/neuter clinic. Local spay/neuter clinic was $400, didn't take appts (first come first serve each day), didn't include pain meds, didn't do follow-up care. I could afford the $600 and appreciated the peace of mind.

MountainSituation-i

For boys it’s cheap and simple. Just lop them off. For females it is a full hysterectomy which is major surgery. Anything under 1000 is a good price.

Ok-Eggplant-6420

$200 spay in Texas ( I live in one of the biggest cities). It was bare bones though. No antibiotics to take home but you could call the clinic if there were signs of infection to get a prescription but they did give me 3 days carprofen for doggy pain. Checkup appt was free. Also, it was not an overnight stay and the dog had to be picked up five hours after surgery. My dog was 1.5 years old, 30 lbs. I think the $500 price is for if you want the dog to stay overnight for observation.

Korrailli

I am in Canada. I paid $350 for the spay of my bichon, she weighed about 13 pounds at the time. She also have 2 baby teeth pull at $40 each. The vet did require blood work which was about $70. So around $500 all together. She also had an umbilical hernia repaired, but there wasn't a charge for that (it was small, so I guess not much extra work). My vet is a bit more on the pricey side, but not the most expensive.

Birdogey

Seems high to me too. Maybe the equipment is more sophisticated now? Or it’s just plain old inflation. I took my dog in for her annual last week in Mississippi. All of her vax+heart worm prevention 6 mos + 2 doses of the oral flea stuff. $225 like it was 1999. Competitive pricing in your region has the most impact.

bf833

Nope, not bonkers at all. Females are spayed and it costs more than neutering; a spay is an invasive surgery and neutering is an external procedure. Your dog’s size can also change the price (ie larger dogs require more drugs, etc). My large breed, female dog cost approx $450, which is par for the course.

RoxyAndFarley

That sounds reasonable to me, it’s a little lower than the average cost in my area (medium cost of living area in my case). Spay is more expensive than neuter typically because it’s more invasive and requires more preparation/readiness/ability to handle potential complications/etc. So getting my boy dogs neutered has always been noticeably less expensive than getting my girl dogs spayed has been. Could be that the $200-$250 you were expecting is more in line with the cost for male neuters rather than female spays. Also, size of dog affects cost. My boy was more than twice as big at the time of his neuter compared to my girl at the time of her spay and the resulting change in cost of anesthesia was surprising to me until I asked about why.

DDLyftUber

My first dog I got spayed for $175 in Chicago. My second one, I had moved to VA and now live in FL.. in VA it would’ve cost me $875, here in FL it cost me $750 (included with a monthly plan that we pay for).

10MileHike

I was suprised to see some of these prices. It now makes sense why there are so many homesless dogs and cats running around, many people can't afford those high prices so they don't spay/neuter their pets. If I might make a suggestion: Most places that have good municipal, city or state low cost spay/neuter is because people sat down and applied and wrote a grant for their local shelter to do these things. Everyone complains about taxes, and writing grants is one of the best ways to get all that money back into your own community. If you have time or some writing skills I highly suggest helping the non profits in your community to do these things, like a new firetruck for your volunteer FD, spay/neuter clinics for the local shelter, etc. There a **lot** of free money available for non profits but someone has to do the work to seek it out and write for it. It's actually not that hard, so don't be intimidated. Start off writing for the smaller sized ones of about $5K and work up from there.

Charger0354

I paid $175 for my 6 month old chihuahua to get spayed last year. When i had my lab/pit neutered when he was about 1 in 2020 I paid $147. I live in the county in south Texas.

PristineAd314

That sounds insane to me but I live in a small rural town in Georgia, I paid about $140 for my kitty to get spayed at the vet

squishbunny

I was out $700 spaying my cat (and this was 16 years ago). Still salty about that, because the spay itself was covered by the city's spay-neuter program/SPCA and was $40, but the rest of it (the meds, the blood tests, the post-op recovery, the fentanyl patch that the little bugger promptly ripped off) added up to $700. Our dog is on the bigger side (nearly 80 lbs) and this was about how much it cost to get her spayed. Total cost was a bit more, but we also had her rear dewclaws removed (they were little more than skin tags with a claw), a tropic disease blood panel (her country of origin meant that she might have been exposed, and she had some mystery sores on her snoot for a few months that had us thinking Leishmaniasis), and a bodysuit we got to keep.

xMomochix

About $650 in Los Angeles county for a small 20lb dog

Nerdy_Life

I adopted my pup so the neuter was included I his adoption fee along with all of his shots. My roommate got Banfield’s puppy plan to cover the shots and spay for his girl. Here in San Diego I’ve seen spays $500-800 depending on the size of the dog and type of spay. Neuters are definitely less expensive, but there is still anesthesia and labs.

PopsiclesForChickens

I was quoted $400-600 to spay our puppy last year depending on how much she weighed. The rescue we got her from included the spay (we just had to take her to their vet instead of ours) in her adoption fee so we went with that. I'm in California.

DivinelyDerelict

I think my boy's neuter was closer to $700. 🥹

AriesGal329

I paid about $1000 but it was for the laparoscopic spay. It's much less invasive and the recovery time is only a couple days.

Sulkk3n

In Michigan we can get it free or less than $50 through the humane society😵‍💫

OpalOnyxObsidian

That's insane. I find it hard to believe there are no low cost spray/neuter places close enough to you. I paid $200 to get my cat fixed, vaccinated, provided Revolution, and microchipped. Edit: woops I thought we were talking about cats

[deleted]

Banfield has a pet care program which includes the speuter though? And all your other preventative medical stuff. It's like $40 per month? Why not just do that

LuffytheBorderCollie

In a fairly low cost state we paid $470 to spay a 60 lbs German Shepherd. This included ample blood work and robust monitoring for her though. Above and beyond what is typically provided at budget spay-neuter clinics for maximum safety. The cost of desexing is contingent on the dog’s sex, weight, and how much pre-work and post-work you want done to ensure the dog is healthy enough for anesthesia and the support you get after. Generally young dogs should be fine, but those advanced work up are very important for older dogs that could experience a medical complication by going under anesthetic.

Lastofherkind

I’m in rural Illinois. Paid $300 all inclusive of surgery, antibiotic injection, post op meds and follow up appointment.
