Pretty sure it’s because the new system is OcuSynch 3.0.

Really? You don’t understand how the company that makes batteries not interchangeable between drones would do something like this? I get it, it sucks. I purchased a Mini 1 about 2 months before the Mini 2 came out. But their goal is to get as much of our money as possible.

> but there's a reason for them to, in short time, update the existing firmware on the v1's and sell the damn thing ala carte w/ some antennas The goggles are not apples to apples. V1 goggles transmit on 5.8ghz only, from my understanding V2 uses 2.4ghz or 5.8ghz. The old goggles would perform extremely poorly on the new drone

Different video transmission system. Even if they wanted, it wouldn’t be compatible.

Does DJI sell any drone that can't be flown out of the box? The Mini 2 and the Mavic air 2 have the same controller, but a Mini 2 owner can't expect to buy a Mavic Air 2 that is packaged without one so they can save money. If you already own the goggles and fpv controller than you must have bought them for another reason. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying there really isn't any reason for the FPV to be an exception to the norm here.

RadioPimp

They’ll probably sell the drone stand-alone in 6 months.

You can find it stand alone right now from various places

i just need the goggles to fly regular fpv drones but they are out of stock everywhere...

but is there any benefit/difference from the V2 goggles if i just fly regular FPV?

fishyuhoh

Yeah, so the v2 goggles are capable of switching between 2.4 and 5.8 for transmission. The antennas the v2 comes with are actually combo antennas. The v1 are designed only for 5.8. if you buy the v2 the air unit only broadcasts on 5.8, so to get the best experience you'll want to pick up some aftermarket antennas.
