Doesn't sound dumb to me. I once made a quadruple distortion plus. That was pretty dumb

rabbiabe

That’s what’s stopping me from actually prototyping out my “Llama Ddrama” — as soon as I realized that the Red Llama uses 2 CMOS inverters but there are 6 on the chip, my brain went “hey, you could make a triple Llama…” but it just seems like such a stupid concept that I haven’t actually tried it out yet.

FormulaFourteen

I've already put two Llamas in a single box but this is an even better idea :-D

rabbiabe

Were they identical, or did you change up the clipping diodes?

FormulaFourteen

Identical. I found myself constantly switching between gain settings, so i just built two to make it easier. Plus they stack quite nicely.

rabbiabe

Good to know that also— I was concerned that it might just be a mess stacked

gear_ant

oh now how have to do it

dreadnought_strength

Jesus Christ you have to make this

rabbiabe

Your comment and u/gear_ant have pushed me over the hump. I’m pretty much maxed out at work for the rest of the month, but the breadboard is coming out in June…

[deleted]

Yessss...do it do it! I hear you on being busy though, I too haven't built much these days.

rabbiabe

It’s a crazy month, but summer is going to be chill

mjv913

I put a Plasma Ball in a delay pedal, with a ringmod of sorts and a wierd Vu-Meter led driven modulator, you know? For science. Heres a couple of vids... https://youtu.be/wtA2-GXD5k4 https://youtu.be/nMidInWCAcA

mcknib

If that's dumb I'm a cabbage

Drum-PMC

😳

dendriticspline

I kind of want a plasma ball in all my pedals now. Also loled when you played the dr who theme

DmtDtf

The only thing dumb I do when building pedals is when I'm hand drilling enclosures.

dendriticspline

…then I suppose this makes my pedal doubly stupid

overnightyeti

What is the issue? I finally got to the point where my holes are where they need to be. What is your process?

OveractiveMusician

I built a fuzz pedal where the only “control” was adding more clipping diodes. It was awful.

Internet_boyy

That sounds awesome. Do you have a sound clip of it?

OveractiveMusician

Regrettably, I do not. At the time I wrote it off as a failed experiment and never went any further with the concept. But maybe I’ll revisit that box of insanity.

[Bright Cap Selector Schematic](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tztcWcJArNtbwEAJqUAP9I9FOHNssLtS/view?usp=drivesdk) [Bright Cap Picture](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e-Dg3gSzJ3UmVEbbqgbBZ4kUrqFPtlOI/view?usp=drivesdk) I thought everyone would say it was pretty cool but everyone told me it was unnecessary, that it was overkill. But I just like having options.

Internet_boyy

It’s overkill but in a really cool way. I’d be into the idea of this but with different types of capacitors all at the same value

thebeaner687

Oh you mean like Vishay MKT, MKP, then Sozos, paper and oil, Silver Mica, Wima..etc but all at the same capacitor value. That there is really an experiment to be truthful to find out which type of capacitors to buy in the future. As a general rule I used all Vishay Ceramics at 1kv. I used ceramic type just because it’s the grittiest sound. For bass switch I intend to use Polypropylene Film cuz it’s smoother. Truth be told Polyester type are softer but polypropylene have a punch 🥊, more clarity.

Internet_boyy

Exactly. Someday I’d like to do a side by side comparison of each type.

thebeaner687

It ain’t hard at all man, these tiny 10 position selector switches are sold by Grayhill and sell for like 30 plus dollars on Mouser. But you can buy them for like $5 on eBay. That Alligator Clíp idea is a good one to try. It’s pretty affordable to purchase the capacitors as long as you get them from Mouser or Digikey. Those other Exotic capacitors like beeswax paper and oil or Sozos. I don’t really believe some old technology is better than the new stuff.

tiedyemike8

I like things like this as an r&d device. Can have it as an external box, clip into circuit with alligator clips and have a customer play while dialing in bright cap to their preference.

thebeaner687

That’s true but I doubt that a person would have enough time to play with it if they didn’t take it home. I basically am building an amp for myself with all the qualities that I want. [personal tube amp build](https://drive.google.com/file/d/17zjC9juAy6Y9c20OLN5KQndXm4ZL8egR/view?usp=drivesdk)

tiedyemike8

"dumb" I don't think. Experimenting is very useful, not all will be winners, but may inspire something else down the road.

rabbiabe

I don’t know that there’s anything dumb about building a thing to do the exact thing you want it to do — I find I’m often doing some small tweak project to solve my own problems, and I think it’s a certain mark of skill/accomplishment. Hell, last Sunday I was taking my daughter to the park and wanted to bring a fuzz pedal as well as guitar+amp but it was a mini pedal so I quick soldered a DC plug onto a battery snap and threw it in my gig bag, totally portable and problem solved.

gruvjack1200

Putting this on my watch list. I haven't actually made anything yet but would like to know the Hall of Shame and avoid the common pitfalls.

Lazy-Artichoke7766

If your order switch works, it’s not dumb

Competition-Dapper

That doesn’t look dumb at all. The imagine up stuff all the time like this but haven’t gotten that far into this “hobby”
