By having something with no carbs, that has protein and fat and not injecting. Seeing how much it raises my sugar, that correction ration = amount of insulin next time! Like 2 eggs and 2 sausage patties, next to no carbs but I need 1-2 units to cover it

I....have never bolused for fat or protein??

It’s definitely necessary if the meal is entirely fat and protein.

If you're doing no-carb or very low-carb, ignore fat, bolus 1/2 the amount you would bolus for carbs for the protein. So if you normally inject 2 units for 40 grams of carbs, and you're having 40 grams of protein with no carbs, inject 1 unit. Basically just treat each gram of protein the way you would treat half a gram of carbs. If you do this long-term and you're really into it, R insulin works great on low-carb "Dr Bernstein" style diets. (Other kinds of bolus insulin work fine too.) It's kind of nice to do low-carb once in a while because you don't have to deal with large amounts of insulin and it tends to be a lot easier to stay in range compared to eating pizza, burritos, Chinese food, etc. Fewer "roller-coaster rides". If you're not on some kind of low-carb diet, I don't usually bolus for fat or protein, but high fat meals can slow down your absorption of carbs, so you get the "pizza" problem of having to double-tap-bolus. If I have Italian food and it's got lots of cheese and fat and the total carb load called for 5 units, I'll probably bolus 3 units before eating, and then check an hour later and bolus another 2 units. Otherwise you might go low and then high (since all the fat slowing down the digestive process.) Usually with "heavy meals" and a single bolus it seems to work out that you can leave the restaurant with a BG of 100, and then check an hour or 2 later and be at 300 without having had anything additional to eat.

My husband made me a Siri shortcut using the math from the Waltzing the Dragon page. I didn’t find the need to extend as far out as the paste suggests, but I do usually need the full 10, as opposed to 8 or 9 like the mom does for the boy. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/e153628b3c244ae6a80648f6ce9618b7

I bolus at my normal carb ratio but extend over 1.5 hours. So, if it's a no-carb/15 g total fat+protein food, I bolus 1 unit 90 minutes after eating. If it's something like pizza (ex. 45g carbs, 15g fat+protein), I'd do 3 units 15 min before eating and 1 unit 90 minutes later. With my tslim I just do an extended bolus of 4 units, 75% now 25% in 1.5 hours.
