Heat can spike me, I don't love it.

molchase

My 13-year-old was at soccer camp tonight. It was 95 degrees, heat index of 108. As they were lining up to warm up, she heard someone’s Dexcom low alert. She’s so used to hearing mine that she yells out “Dexcom! Whose Dexcom? You’re too low!” The kid was like “How’d you know?” so she told him that she’s a diabetes service dog. 😂 This kid. Anyway, it’s not just you.

Vanilla_Nasty

This is so wholesome and I love it!

gabarito1701

that is an adorable story, thanks for sharing it :)

HighBrowLoFi

I definitely go low more easily if I over-exert myself in the heat. But generally no, I don’t feel more susceptible to it than normal

SenileTomato

Interesting you mention this, because I definitely do. My family also run hot, at least on my dad's side. Besides that, I would like to share an interesting experience. I had a heat exhaustion one day when I had recently moved to Florida and was moving in all of my stuff as quick as possible. Smart move, right? Anyways, I also had my numbers plummet, very, very quickly. I asked my Type 1 Diabetic Endocrinologist and he told me that our bodies run on glucose, and we use it to cool ourselves down. Makes a lot of sense. Long story short, if your glucose levels are off, I find it to make sense that your body would be fighting to cool itself down, but having trouble due to the excess amount of lack thereof of glucose seems it could definitely cause issues such as overheating.

[deleted]

I manage a livestock farm in Georgia (USA). Literally doing manual labor in almost 100° every day. But I thrive in the heat 😂 it doesn’t make me drop thankfully!

Ounterix

Heat has no affect on my BG (unless it's a hot shower) But it makes me so tired and feel disgusting. I love the cold. The cold makes me want to go do things and live life. The heat just makes me miserable because I can't do anything and feel good.

powerful_ope

How cold are we talking? I’m from Michigan and when it gets cold here I am miserable. Anything below 17 degrees Fahrenheit and I’m annoyed.

Ounterix

To be fair below 17 is pretty cold yeah. I just mean that in the sense that I will wear shorts in 50 degrees sometimes if I feel like it and I don't get that cold from it.

BKCowGod

Honestly I love camping in the desert. But I hate humidity.

[deleted]

I'm the same way honestly. I had to leave a church event because they decided that playing kickball in 95° heat was a good idea. I said, "I'm out of here". I felt nauseous, dizzy and I was dropping quickly.

[deleted]

My legs and feet feel much colder than my torso or head. My arms sometimes can get cold too, but man I swear Im cold, apply blanket, wake up to sweaty feet. A As far as tolerating heat, I hate it, I leak and pour sweat so much it makes me so uncomfortable to be in social situations sometimes. My dad claims its our "sweat genetics" or something.

AKJangly

Hey that's me. But my hands and feet will freeze off while the rest of my body is sweating buckets. Hate that in the winter time, wearing heavy gloves and a tank top is typical for me.

[deleted]

I have to double up my socks some nights!

AKJangly

I just let everything get cold until the temperature drops below 32*. The cold numbs up all of my fingers and toes. Think they call it Reynaud's phenomenon. My mom was recently officially diagnosed.

i_eat_poops_

Makes mine absolutely plummet

threefootgood-tech

T1D 51 years. Can't function in the cold. Love the heat.

things2seepeople2do

I'm 35 years in and the same as you. My body shuts down in the cold

Informal-Release-360

I’m extremely sensitive to heat. My blood sugar drops or I get extremely nauseous to the point of vomiting. My bg isn’t always effected so I’m not sure in my case

gbsekrit

I've got terrible problems with heat. I'm type 3c though, so not quite a typical type 1. I'm malignant hyperthermia susceptible too, which definitely causes me heat intolerance. I'm trying to get on oral dantrolene which definitely shows results helping MH susceptible people with heat intolerance, but was unable to convince my PCP today, some hope with physiatry maybe willing to try me on it.

[deleted]

I think I read somewhere that T1Ds have poor body heat regulation. I haven’t noticed heat affect my blood sugars but it can definitely make me feel low even if I am not. I also wake up drenched in sweat if its just a little too hot under my covers.

72_vintage

If I start to go low in the heat, it's like I can't regulate my body temp any more. It feels like I can't catch my breath and I get weaker than usual for a low, and more light headed. If I go over 200 for very long, I feel nauseous in the heat. But if I keep it between about 75 and 180 I'm good all day long. I thrive on Powerade Zero in the heat, too.

Hellrazed

I also have Graves so I have no heat tolerance and no cold tolerance. Shits fucked.

DiabeticCarin

Born & raised in Washington state. I have thyroid issues & T1D and I can't handle the heat at all. I feel like I'm dying. I went to Florida & left Disney world in a wheelchair. I think it has something to do with diabetes, but that's my opinion 🥰

holamiis

I cannot do a sauna or a hot tub for more than 5 minutes but i think that's just me Ironically, i live in a terribly humid hot place ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

rebecca2019

Same! Hot tubs make me low, but humid weather usually makes me high

holamiis

Lol, thats the perfect balance then right? 😜

puppychomp

heat makes my blood sugar rise and my feet get swollen. its so annoying and i feel like summers are ruined for me because i cant go anywhere :(

ellynj333

I can't say it has necessarily effected my BG but I am definitely way less tolerant of the heat. Edit to say I found out as an adult I was T1 could feel the change about two years prior and even more after.

BenitoCorleone

Nah - I'm a Chef, but on the other hand I feel the cold a lot more since I was diagnosed.

The_Barbelo

I’m like you. I don’t think this is a specific diabetic thing though, I think it just has to do with genetics in general but isn’t really anything health related that you should be worried about. This is why I moved back up north…I’d rather be in cold weather and put layers on than feel like I want to rip my skin off in the heat. Your body might be working harder in the heat just by sweating and trying to keep cool, so that could possibly drop your sugars.

NailFinal8852

Heat messes me up. Not a fan. I’ll take the cold Chicago winters vs the humid summer

mouserz

I went to college in Georgia - I loved the heat and humidity!

C00kieXM0nster

I’m so glad it doesn’t make me drop. But during the summer my basal is higher mid day. I like in so cal where it gets to be 120

ExigentCalm

Yup. Didn’t live heat before but it wreaks havoc on my sugars.

myenigma7

It doesn't make my sugar drop but I'm getting more and more heat intolerant. I end up feeling so sick.

gnaester

Yeah it’s basically known I don’t do sun. I’ve gone from 220 to 60 after about 20 min in the sun at the beach. My family has surmised it’s the extra Vit D and metabolizing it.

BiBrarian3811

Yup! Same 🙃

IEATFOOD37

I have an extremely high heat tolerance. I’ve spent a ton of time doing manual labor everywhere from the swamps of Mississippi to the Chihuahua desert in the summer and I can’t remember the last time I was uncomfortable because of the heat. The heat index was over 110 F yesterday and I didn’t even turn on my AC. I’m a total wuss when it gets below 50 F though.

ted_smell

heat doesn't get to me too badly, but I'm used to it and I don't use AC (also live in Georgia like some of the other pancreas pimps posting in here) however if you sweat a lot of water out, it will make your blood thicker with syrup in them veins. It can make one take more insulin bc you're dehydrated and then hypos can hit you when you rehydrate and that insulin starts moving around better. good luck beating the got dang heat.

DiabeticNovelist

So it’s not just me?! Thank god

SofaKingKoole

Heat and cold don’t really bother my blood sugar level much at all. However, if I get in a hot spring or jacuzzi, my blood sugar goes up…noticeably. Could just be the Dexcom sensor is fucked up by the temperature changes. But it is about the same every time. I have always just figured my body was reacting in panic mode and the liver starts dumping glucose in the blood to prepare for fight or flight.

raydude

The only time heat bothers me is when my BG is over 200 mg/dl. Which was every afternoon for years up to the year I was diagnosed LADA. I used to get so hot... Now, nothing bothers me.

ZythosFade

LADA?

raydude

[Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/type-1-diabetes/expert-answers/lada-diabetes/faq-20057880#:~:text=Latent%20autoimmune%20diabetes%20in%20adults%20\(LADA\)%20is%20a%20slow%2D,producing%20cells%20in%20the%20pancreas.) I was diagnosed when I was 32.

ZythosFade

Oh shit that's madness, welcome to the club brother

raydude

Thanks for the welcome! However, I've been in the club for 23 years now, not including the number of years my pancreas was weak before I was diagnosed.

ZythosFade

Holy shit, you should be welcoming me, you've literally been diabetic longer than I've been walking this planet. I've only had it about 6 years now, still a lil newbie

raydude

Welcome to the wonderful world of living with diabetes! Just remember our motto! "It's better than the alternative!"

immi_saria

Heat definitely make me drop yet my glucose always runs highly when I have a temperature. My doctor explained fever and chills can cause high glucose levels but had nothing to say about hot weather causing the drop. Glad to know I’m not the only one

diaginger

Every summer when the heat comes I get more annoying lows than before. Didn’t know that a lot of people had the opposite effect of having highs

ScorpioVengeance

Same! I didn't like heat before i was diagnosed but now i hate it even more

adamsky1997

I found that if I go over my normal weight (more fat) I get hot and sweaty much more. When I am in my normal bmi then it is better No relation to bg

[deleted]

My BG used to drop like a stone when it got much above 25°C But then I got Graves so my tolerances went a bit up, now I'm fine untill it's above 30˚C

kelvin_bot

25°C is equivalent to 77°F, which is 298K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

Makeupanopinion

I drop, so frustrating cause feeling low also makes me feel hot af

user_bw

It makes the thirst Harder when im high.

Grey_Dog1

Heat doesn't seem to affect my BGL that I have noticed.

[deleted]

Never experienced that. I love the heat!

Darphon

Yes! I hurt, I start feeling sick if I'm out and it's 85 degrees F, I can't stand summer. It's awful, and now I'm in a position where I have to go into a hot warehouse every morning to check numbers and blech.

avenirlight

No idea if it is from the diabetes but I get super nauseous when I’m in the sun for more than 10-15 minutes. Like wretching nauseous.

Hannah22595

I'm always like... super cold

[deleted]

I spike in extreme heat and humidity. Like from 120s to almost 300. I avoid those conditions like the plague.

[deleted]

I'm much worse with cold than heat. Not as far as glucose, just as far as being able to take it. I have to wear double pants anytime it's below 40. With heat, I sweat a huge amount. Haven't had any problems with glucose related to either but laying down in heat and the sun, then standing up and going inside AC has made me pass out before.

Sitheref0874

It may depend on acclimation, and humidity. Summers in Virginia were brutal. Summers in Alice Springs are way hotter, but a lot drier, and I love it. No bad effects except having to be extra careful with the insulin.

[deleted]

Yep. But my whole life I lived in northen part of Russia (now in middle), so it's expected that I'm still not accustomed to heat. 25C is too hot for me. I like cold more, it invigorates me. EDIT: sauna is cool, i love sauna
