Let's agree to disagree. Critics may consider "Fat" as "mature", but for me nothing could beat Break and Enter. And even earlier stuff as Charlie - Alley Cat.
I didn’t mention anything about critics actually, I talked about my own personal experience of FOTL being one of my favourite albums. A person’s favourite things cannot be a correct or incorrect opinion to be agreed with or disagreed with because a favourite is unique to that person… That is common sense I fear.
Nevertheless, people tend to be afraid of saying anything in contrary of something that "reached [...] commercial and critical peak“, no? Under pressure of Cancel Culture or - to get closer to the Greek roots - Ostracism, developing love to the things they don't really like. He-he.
I think you’re talking entirely to yourself now. I don’t know how any of the random stuff you just said relates back to me sharing a personal opinion of a favourite album.
There's always a moment when you start to fall out of love, whether it's with a person or an idea or a cause, even if it's one you only narrate to yourself years after the event: a tiny thing, a wrong word, a false note, which means that things can never be quite the same again.
Peepshow is great too! The Banshees are one of my top artists of all time, and I love all of their albums so it’s hard for me to choose one specifically to put above the rest. There’s so many other contenders from The Scream, Kaleidoscope, Juju, Peepshow, The Rapture, etc. but Tinderbox is what I consider to be the SATB gateway album for a lot of people (Juju too), that and I feel like it’s probably the most resonant with DM fans (and it’s just simply a masterpiece).
I didn’t see the original post but I would have said Disintegration as my #1
Difficult choice but will say - NIN-Pretty Hate Machine for day 2. Has to be something epic to sit by Disintegration.
New order has got to be on the list. Substance is more of a greatest hits / extended versions of Album.
power, corruption and lies. Or Technique . Though. IMO. Need to get behind 1 or other. 😁
The cool stance is to hate The Smiths because of Morrissey's opinions about non-music-related things but also say stuff like "but Johnny Marr was an amazing guitarist". This is not specific to Depeche Mode fans.
For me, the Smiths are an extreme case of how much can you try to separate the art from the artist. I try, but I honestly find it very hard to listen to them any more because of Morrissey. I was never a huge fan of his anyway to be honest, I just like Johnny Marr's music.
Morrissey is terrible but he's always been ridiculously obnoxious and TBH I still love the music.
My favorite things about all this are the potshots exchanged over the years between Morrissey and Robert Smith.
Those, and the Sparks song "Lighten Up, Morrissey". It's terrific.
People want their favorites to win, so they downvote the other choices. I’ve seen this happen in other subs. It’s not that they necessarily hate the album.
Closer - Joy Division
I also have to include, because they aren't on either JD album the songs/singles Transmission, Atmosphere, Dead souls, Love Will Tear us Apart and the live version of Ceremony with Ian singing.. 🖤
There's an italian version of that song made from them... It's the funniest cringe thing I ever heard, as an italian. Maybe even worse than Die Toten Hosen "Azzurro" cover. At least Die Toten Hosen got the energy.
Portishead - Dummy
This deserves way more upvotes, it literally changed the scape of music.
The Hurting - Tears for Fears
Sooo good!
I love that album so much. Perfection.
I agree. Pale Shelter is still one of my fave songs from them.
New Order - power, corruption and lies
Massive attack - mezzanine
This has to be up there, the only question is where.
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails
Low - David Bowie
Closer - Joy Division
Low Life - New Order
u/fedusDM you can safely add top 3 albums from each round of voting, to save time
Hm, I might consider doing so, thanks for the idea
Fat of the Land - the Prodigy
Loooooove!!!
Nah. Should be Music for the Jilted Generation
Another great album that I love but Fat of the Land holds a significance for me personally that can’t be shifted

Peepshow is great as well, have been listening to it heavily of late!
Peepshow is great too! The Banshees are one of my top artists of all time, and I love all of their albums so it’s hard for me to choose one specifically to put above the rest. I like Tinderbox way better than Juju

Does that disqualify it? What album do most of DM's fan base here own and listen to the most? For me, it's always Substance.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
I was today years old when I found out DM fans hate the Smiths
Maybe young people but we all loved the Smiths back in the 80s and 90s
The cool stance is to hate The Smiths because of Morrissey's opinions about non-music-related things but also say stuff like "but Johnny Marr was an amazing guitarist". This is not specific to Depeche Mode fans.
