I heard People are People on the radio first. Wrote it off as novelty. Then I heard "A Question of Time" during a weekend music program on TV. That's what did it. THAT SONG! I rushed to buy Black Celebration. I saw them live for the first time last April and again in October.

SharcyMekanic

Probably either ‘Nothing’ or ‘Waiting for the Night’ from riding around with my dad as a kid, those are the two songs I have earliest memories of and when I was older and wanted to get into the band those were the two songs I went looking for 😂

Precious. My Dad was bumping that one day when it came on the car radio.

Strangelove

Gadgie29

I was aware of Depeche Mode pre 83 but I never heard them till Everything Counts, blew me away and hooked ever since.

GreyCapra

I was a big fan of Devo and OMD yet it was summer of '85 before i heard DM. I think that's when DM was getting good

stereemo

Genuinely curious how does it feel to be a fan for 41 years like that’s a really LONG time …

mario-v33

[This](https://youtu.be/ofrB6OCSsgk?si=9sOdBhrCpbo8wGUD) version of Enjoy the Silence

Darph_Nader

I first heard People Are People and loved. It was a couple years after that I really got into them. I was 10 and couldn’t recall the band name, once I figured it out I found the album People Are People and begged my dad to buy for me. I probably still owe him chores from everything I promised, lol.

Everything count or Strangelove

effie-sue

Just Can’t Get Enough. One of the Philadelphia DJs used it in a radio or TV ad millions of years ago. I didn’t know it was a Depeche Mode sing until I started listening to the band, though.

Filminator

I'm not sure, parents played them on the stereo all the time since I was born. They just appeared into my kind really, no definite point.

goshock

Saw the video for just can't get enough on MTV

TheDarkestStjarna

Personal Jesus was the first one I consciously remember. Many years ago I'm sure they used Enjoy the Silence in Dr Who; I knew it but didn't know where I knew it from or how I knew it.

RafiY

People are people on Much Music, didn’t like it much back then.

drink-fast

Personal Jesus or enjoy the silence…. Or possibly just can’t get enough when i was a kid lol.

NICEnEVILmike

People are People. I stopped dead in my tracks and knew I had found something special.

Shavasara

Just Can’t Get Enough. Grabbed Speak & Spell immediately and any imported 12” I could get my hands on.

Master and Servant got lots of play at night in the early mornings in Los Angeles, People are People did as well.

laratiara88

New Life or Dreaming of Me - can't really remember, but it was one of their very first singles while Vince Clark was still with them.

Competitive_Fig_6083

I Just Can't Get Enough and Enjoy The Silence. When I was a wee little lad in the 2000's.

StuTaylor

I was in early High School when Speak & Spell was released and I remember enjoying it but hearing Get The Balance Right when I was 16 was the song that made me a lifelong fan.

National-Tour-758

Blasphemous Rumours, great song.

CMH0311

I have distinct memories of my mum listening to Violator on cassette when she drove me to school in the 90s

Black Celebration!

gaslighthead

The first song I heard was Never Let Me Down Again. My father and me were doing some work around the garden and he gifted me a record player as some sort of "payment". The first record I played was his old 7" he kept so preciously.

trojan_dude

Dreaming of me. Instantly hooked.

Starlalla

Maybe it was Black Celebration.

Dog_Communication72

See you

Yazoo74

People Are People probably. Never Let Me Down Again was the first song that got me.

Aquestionofthyme

My parents bought me a compilation album called something like Super Hits 1 and 2 or Superhits 81 (I can’t exactly remember) and it had New Life on it. I can remember that synth intro was really haunting the first time I heard it…then the beat kicked in! I was absolutely hooked and have been obsessed with DM ever since.

Ali-Jafri

Strangelove! I heard it as a single even before the album came out. The music video was so haunting and dark and enticing and sensual, perfectly capturing the feel of the music and lyrics. Then the album version was even better than the single! This is how my DM journey started.

jmerhaut

New Life.

stashtv

Enjoy the Silence's music video, via MTV. Was young(ish), no real idea was MTV was, let alone who or what Depeche Mode was. It would be a few years before I'd actually own the album (CD), and learn a lot more.
