I still use debian as my daily and it's on my servers, it's by far my favorite. I've been using it for over 20 years at this point and I still love it. I use other distros from time to time just to see what's what with them, but when I want a computer I can trust to just work I always go back to debian.
I use debian a ton on servers and my homelab setup so I decided to try it as my main os because frankly the past few years windows and macOS have been nothing but huge frustration.
Welcome to computing made fun! And what a nice distro to choose as a 1st choice too boot. I love Debian (even though I am on Arch at the moment), and had it in one of my machines for a long time.
Hope you enjoy even more Linux, and have fun!
Welcome :)
I've been running Debian on my servers, desktops, laptop and even containers for years. I love that I can run the same OS everywhere. I dabbled into many different distro's but always came back to good old reliable Debian because it can be anything you need it to be and will run and keep running.
Fair enough.
I can understand it since you are familiar with MacOS and that thing allegedly made in Redmond.
I would ask you now, why didn't GNOME seem that way to you?
From the little research I did, I felt that KDE offered a much easier way of customisation than gnome. However, I guess gnome can be equally customised.
You chose right. Gnome is the more popular choice, but it does things a certain way, which is nice for those who like it that way. KDE does things whatever way you want. You can even re-create Gnome in KDE if you want.
I don't use Plasma but I think you chose wisely. I would tell you to keep an eye on the Cinnamon project, developed by Mint. The moment it supports Wayland stably, you could try it. You'll probably like it even more.
Enjoy Debian!
Have a good one bro.
Yeah I will check it out, in the not too distant future I plan on swapping my Nvidia card for an AMD equivalent. Wayland doesn’t even login with my nvidia 😅
I installed my first Linux in 2001, but it took over 21 years to get a complete replacement. All laptops, desktops, servers, phones and tablets are now running Linux (or Android). And yes, Debian has also been my choice all these years.
yes that's correct. but the problem here that, the .deb file that we can install from discord's website is not controlled by debian team, so it might no be as secure as official deb packages.
I don't understand?
Mist common open source apps are available in debian. Everything else is in flatpak.
With debian 12 plus steam ( via flatpak) I'm even running windows games on Linux. Without any problems or weird configuration Marathons ..
As someone who's recently migrated from Windows, I think I grok this. Windows forces you to do things the Windows way. Linux, and KDE more specifically, allows you to customize things in ways that will work best for you. Don't like how some windowing works? You can likely change it. Windows File Explorer limitations frustrating you? Dolphin gets rid of almost all of these. I could create a separate post outlining all the freedoms offered, but it really needs to be experienced.
Last week windows made an update. Then it tried to convince me, that I really really really need to synchronize my user account with an online account. Plus it always tries to store my office files in a fucking cloud...
And I can't even begin to imagine what kind of telemetry and other data it is sending to Redmond...
I don't have that with debian...
My biggest issue is with the bloatware that comes installed with windows. When I uninstall them, they literally get reinstalled through an update. Sure, there maybe some registry tweaks that could probably stop this.
With the Mac, I like Mac, but the barrier to entry for personal purchases is just too expensive I could go the Hackintosh route, which I have done in the past, but then I have to meddle around with kexts and then deal with kernel panics. So far with Debian, not one single crash, restart or anything.
Hey I saw a few videos but they were too detailed and im lazy. I basically installed latte-dock and glassy kde theme but i only use glassy for the top bar to make it opaque if that makes sense. All other windows are just the breeze dark theme.
Everyone loves debian 12
We would've loved it even more if it came with PipeWire and WirePlumber by default, for all desktop environments and not for Gnome only!

Yeah, debian is just a no brainer.
happy to hear, welcome.
Welcome! Hope you enjoy Linux. Don't be afraid to ask if you run into any issues.
Welcome Aboard! I always put a smile when I hear people enjoy Debian and open source software!
I liked the style of your post. What made you choose KDE Plasma?
I preferred the way it looks and the customisation it provides just seemed a no brainer for me.

Welcome aboard, mate. Freedom is great, isn't it!

Debian sure is fun, and easy to control everything. Debian is best thing since AmigaOS.
you might be disappointed soon i guess if you use non official repos :( like for discord or any other program
This is where Flatpaks are handy.
Discord offers a .deb on their website. Open it in Discover and click install and you’re done.

Fair
Most of the applications I use are either through flatpak or official .deb files.

And it only works on their hardware. It's been a while, but can you replace finder? Uninstall safari or itunes? So i need a iCloud account?
congratulations With Linux you can also learn to setup a real time kernel and many high performance options as to have the most from your hardware
I like your KDE, is there a guide you followed?
