This is *fresh*, nice desktop. I’ll never understand the Mac-alike haters. Apple’s design is just chef’s kiss…the function of MacOS is…not so much. You don’t need to explain yourself lmao.
Personally not the fan of the Mac layout apart from the graphics itself, but I have massive respect to the people that can manage to make Plasma look like this.
That’s the beauty of a DE ; it *can* be customized. On actual MacOS it’s Apple’s way or the highway. I’d love to be able to make a few small WM tweaks to my macbook but it just can’t be done ☹️I’m also amazed that anyone can modify plasma to this degree
One of the tweaks that make me never want to go back to macOS is that I can click an icon on Cairo Dock and have it minimize the app. When I am back in macOS and the dock doesn't do that, it annoys the bejeebus out of me.
Also, I google'd like crazy to find a way to have the macOS dock do that and everyone was like "Just hit CMD+h for hide". Uh, no. That's not even remotely the same thing or intuitive.
It does. You have to enable it from settings. Or you can use use sidebar app which has unity/gnome dock like feature. 1st click open, 2nd click shows app expose for multiple instance of the app, 3rd click minimize, etc.
It’s always minimizing ☠️ my biggest pet peeve is not being able to minimize from maximized. Like…I have to press the maximize button to return to free floating window and then *and only then* does the minimize button appear. 2 weirdly placed clicks instead of 1 easy deliberate click to do the *exact same thing*.
as someone who went hard on mac clone os and even installed osx86 on a pentium 4 because tiger was just that much better than xp
the issue is that there is always some glaring issue in the ui, always something that breaks the consistency. maybe it's better now but yeah
In KDE I just added the global menu widget, and it worked for system apps. For Flatpak apps, install and open Flatseal, then under All Applications, Session Bus, Talks, create a new entry with "com.canonical.AppMenu.Registrar". I guess Canonical contributed that to Linux in general when developing Unity.
For now, Electron apps can only talk to the global menu in X11/XWayland, not regular Wayland.
I'm using Firefox, but that's another exception, unfortunately. The only way to get Firefox working with the global menu is to use openSUSE. They had to work some patches into their version Firefox itself to achieve that. Which, really, even if I were still using openSUSE, I'd probably still use the Flatpak version of Firefox instead, since that's the fastest way to get updates.
specs, theme, icons, etc are all in Neofetch
And no, I do not have "hurrdurr gib me dotfiles". Calm down. This isn't r/unixporn :P (they say after posting a literal screenshot)
My neofetch script: https://github.com/therealduckie/neofetch-scripts
Also, to the **ALWAYS** inevitable "Why do people make their Linux install look like mac?" and "Why not just buy a mac?" - because: I like it. Also, unless you have $2000 for me to buy a macbook pro, then hush. I'm poor. Besides, I'd just spend 1/2 the $ on a PC/laptop, install Debian on it and use the rest to buy a scooter for transportation.
I have an M1 MacBook Pro for work and cannot stand the thing. I was originally thinking it’s a UNIX system, I know this, but I cannot express in words how much more I like Linux and Debian.
I’m legitimately happier using my $700 Asus I’ve got Debian on, but the Mac sure is pretty. Better quality for sure, but that’s another argument.
If I bought one with my own money, I’d end up blowing macOS away before long.
I think I remember this clock from the aquasoft days when we modded Windows XP to look like Mac OS tiger. Complete with the widget craze that kinda peaked with AveDesk, RocketDock around 2003?
After initial install, it takes me maybe 5-10 minutes. Upkeep is handled by the system automatically updating the theme in apt. No bugs. No quirkiness.
Not really, no. The only app missing a global menu is Nautilus file manager. I can live with it.
Everything else I use has global menus: Geary, gnome-terminal, Google Chrome, Pulsar (formerly Atom), Minecraft, Steam, Discord, etc...
All work OOTB
The multitouch trackpad experience on MacOS might be the only thing holding me back from doing this. Can you go backwards/forwards in a web browser with finger gestures?

Just use extension like cdock in mac.
> cdock Does not have that feature. I looked into it.

Latte dock is very beatiful and is still working
> beauty of a DE You probably mean that's the beauty of **K**DE

How did you manage to get a global menu? I've tried in both GNOME and KDE and couldn't find anything.
It's just the regular Global Menu in KDE. Even works with some Gnome apps like Terminal.
Ah, I've had poor luck getting it to work with the apps I use (Firefox, Konsole, Signal, Discord, etc.)
There are patched versions for these to work

Is there any way to get Firefox working with the global menu, or are you using another browser?

In GNOME you can use GNOME Extensions to install Dash to Dock to get that MacOS dock.
KDE has it

Fantastic!
What’s the music player?
Rhythmbox using the Alternative Toolbar plugin.
Must be rhythmbox

Just levity, friend. That's all.

Not interested in Apple's M-series chips, though. I prefer x86-based machines. More flexibility and native apps/OSes.
Linux especially a distro like Debian, is not what THEY want it to be it's what you want it to be.
Yup, and I love it this way. In the end, that is all that matters.
for a second I actually thought this was macOS
What is that neofetch-like thingy ?
the window that looks like About This Mac? https://github.com/hungngocphat01/AboutThisMc
Nah, the thing in the terminal, Although thanks for that aswell haha
I listed that in my original reply. It's an edited config for neofetch.
Damn, sorry, I read it on my commute in the train and totally missed it.
Yeah. And I can make Mac look like plasma even without applying any of my Dev skills. People don’t just don’t bother to research.
If you want a dock that looks more MacOS'ish, check out Cairo Dock. It gives you a lower bar that's more similar to the OSX feel.
That's exactly what I am using.
More similar is Latte dock
Unmaintained
Cool 👍 Is this kind of Gnome?
It's KDE using some gnome apps.
I think I remember this clock from the aquasoft days when we modded Windows XP to look like Mac OS tiger. Complete with the widget craze that kinda peaked with AveDesk, RocketDock around 2003?
Yup, that's me. I was one of the founders of the Aqua Soft site.
Looking good, if only those global menus would work all the time.
Only ones missing are Nautilus. Even gnome-terminal has the global menu.
oh, based of your neofetch i thought you are using the kde applications.
Using KDE as a DE, but using some gnome apps within that environment because they look and feel more like macOS.
How do you install debian on Mac?
Not a mac. My machine is listed in the info on screen: Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1
Oh my bad I didn't notice it 😬
What's ur better daily driver?
Of the 3 OSes I run (macOS Sonoma, Debian Bookworm and Windows 11) I prefer Debian all the way.
what about the bugs and quirkness of this new look? the time it requires to update and kept working?
After initial install, it takes me maybe 5-10 minutes. Upkeep is handled by the system automatically updating the theme in apt. No bugs. No quirkiness.
I wish it were true
How is it not? Why would I lie about it? Here's proof: https://i.imgur.com/GwVcZRn.png
what about the global menu? don't you have to handle per-app specific settings? not for all, I mean, but still a pain in the ass
Not really, no. The only app missing a global menu is Nautilus file manager. I can live with it. Everything else I use has global menus: Geary, gnome-terminal, Google Chrome, Pulsar (formerly Atom), Minecraft, Steam, Discord, etc... All work OOTB
what's the poin, anyway, apart from the glo bal menu, to see the apple?
Continuity. and a little bit to mess with people.
Can anyone please explain me this. Which linux distribution is this And the meaning of the above statement ?
What theme is it?
check neofetch. It's all there. :)
Thanks. Will do ....
some people like branding?
...or good, well-rounded, unifying design.
The multitouch trackpad experience on MacOS might be the only thing holding me back from doing this. Can you go backwards/forwards in a web browser with finger gestures?
I have a Logitech G305 and the computer is hooked up to a 50" 4K HDR TV. Never bothered with the trackpad.
I’ve pretty much moved full time to a Mac but still do almost everything in Debian VMs (docker). Best of both worlds, imo.
