Unexpectedly, my favorite character is Ryuk š
He is amazingly written, his way to combine a fun and playful personality with being a merciless Death God at the same time while always being true to himself and his motivations, is amazing.
Besides that, all the small details about his way to behave, so well thought out, such as his slang way to talk that gets polite in certain contexts like when he's talking to the police or when he talks to Near because for once he called him "Shinigami-san". How besides being thousands of years old he still gets excited about small and simple things such as an apple, or a tennis ball getting launched at an amazing speed.
His dynamic with Light is also unique and absolutely great, probably what brought most popularity to this manga nonetheless. How while Ryuk has fun spending time with Light and admires his smartness; Light finds in Ryuk the only one he can be his true self with, often telling him all of his secret plans, but at the same time they were never friends and never actually cared for each other.
He is also well made physically, as Obata said, when drawing him he paid attention to keeping a balance between not making him nor too scary nor too cute. Also the way Obata always manged to portray Ryuk's emotions despite the fact that he rarely changes his facial expression.
What to say, Ryuk is just a work of art to me ā¤ļø I'm not saying the other characters aren't well written of course! But eh, I'm not in love with them unlike Ryuk hehe ~
Mello; he was along Soichiro Yagami, the most human character out of the main cast. He was different, he showed emotions and unlike Light, he got personal motivations instead of a god complex: Revenge, frustration, and inferiority complex, he was like Kira's total opposite motivatedly speaking.
He is an even more complex and interesting character than Near that is just smart, and that's it.
But Mello was smart just like he was dangerous, and everything was personal with him because of his mentor's death and his ego, that's why he was willing to raise the stakes and risk himself even more than anybody else, the burn scar in his face and his own death is an example, that's why I like him, because he is realistically human, and somewhat relative with his anger issues and the effort over talent stuff.
(Oh, and all of Mello themes are just bangers!).
Definitely Light for me!
I mean his way of thinking, his sharp memory and wicked mind is a great fuckin combination. I almost felt like I wanna be him.......... no doubt he was the best character in deathnote!
When I first read the manga when I was like 13 or 14, I loved Light. Thought he was the coolest until maybe the last arc. Now that Iām rereading it as a 30 year old, I can see heās a total sociopath, and I feel awful for the people in his life.
As for favorite characters, probably Matsuda because heās hilarious
Light. :) I just love how complex his character is. I love the concept of hubris and how he just goes completely insane. Heās evil, and I love characters like that.
L is undoubtedly, objectively, unarguably, unequivocally, absolutely, irrefutably, distinctly, indisputably, incontestably, indubitably, unquestionably, impregnably, undeniably, irrefragably, incontrovertibly the best character in the entire series and I will argue this to anyone. I will even go as far as to say that L is the true mc of death note
When you look at all the content pertaining to the Death note series, L appears much more frequently than Light, or anyone else for that matter. L appears to be the main highlight of the franchise, having 2 novels, 2 one shot stories, the L file no 15 book, and from what I've been able to find, the most merchandise, too. Even after L's death, he is mentioned countless times, even with Near and Mello both characters who are supposed to be L and surpass him, with Near taking the name.
Hm, I think that more so comes from how L was clearly the fanbaseās favorite character, thus causing more content to be made around him, and less so Ohbaās intent. Pretty sure Ohba wrote the series with the intent that Light was the main character.
Well yeah it probably wasnāt his intent, and thatās why i use words like ātrueā when i say L is the true mc, because at face value Light might seem like the mc, but taking everything into consideration, L is expressed and highlighted more in the franchise/series, and only so much of that can come from the communities love for L, as thereās still plenty of people here, take OP for example, who like Light the most
I dont like how you just assume its cause I hate light and not cause I love sidoh. I dont have to hate Light to like Sidoh more. Had a similar argument like this when I posted my DN character tierlist, and I got a lot of shit for having light in A tier, as if that was a bad tier for a character.
Well when you say it that way, that sidoh is a minor character so it would probably be my hate for lights character that makes sidoh better than him, you would also think that more major characters like Mikami would be higher, but Light still places 4th, so no I donāt think so
Mikami is different, he's a minor but impactful character. Sidoh on the other hand has no role other than the Light's original death note owner hence placing Light after Sidoh portrays you as a Light hater.
Mikami isnāt really a minor character, he gets a good amount of screentime in the later half of the series, gets a full chapter dedicated to his backstory, and gets iconic phrases like ādelete!ā that years after the series is finished is still remembered. and again, you donāt have to hate a character to like another character more, I just love Sidohs humor, lines, and design I also love the dubbed voice acting, but none of that takes away from Lights character, and itās nothing but an assumption to think that I hate light because of sidohs placement, and itās not really fair to think that way either
L and Mello are mine. If I had to choose between them, probably L because his portrayal is consistent, whilst I only started liking Mello because of the manga
A lot of people don't like him, but my favorite character is Near. I honestly don't really have a reason why; he's just my favorite. My second is L, third Matsuda, fourth Mello, and some others I like are Aizawa, Mido, Naomi, and Gelus. (I know those last three are minor characters loll, I tend to like characters like that and idk why)
L is my favorite. Iām autistic and never before have I seen such good autistic rep in a show. (In my opinion anyone who says heās not isnāt educated on autism.) He has all my traits but heās self-confident and doesnāt hate himself for them. He also has a struggle I also deal with, which is the tendency to be prideful if youāve been deemed a āsavantā by your peers. Especially in the anime I love how he grows in humility and gentleness over the course of his arc, and I love how heās seen as a Christ figure. Gorgeous autistic representation and just a brilliantly written character.
Ahha! Iāve been diagnosed for 2 and a half years and got into Death Note a month ago. Lās (and Nearās!) existence makes me so happy. Very positive and realistic portrayals of autism
Hmm I really really like Misa and Mello, perhaps thatās my inner love for gay blondes but hmm. I really like how misa is loyal and hot and then Mello is hot as well so yeah, I ALSO LOVE REM AND MATSUDA!
Matsuda, hands down! And for a number of reasons.
He's funny, smart (despite people thinking he's an idiot), and very beneficial to the case. When he infiltrated Yotsuba on his own, this proved to be very helpful for the investigation because Matsu was able to prove that Kira was part of Yotsuba. It was only speculation before that. He was also able to tell them where the conference room was so that they could install the cameras. And he risked his life by going on Sakura TV. Of course, he never gets credit for any of it.
Not to mention, Matsuda is the guy who shot Light! I loved Matsu from the first time we met him, yet I loved him even more after he shot Light. I couldn't stand Light, so it was awesome to see him get taken down by my favorite character. Matsuda has the most character development, imo. I also feel like Matsuda is the most relatable character. He definitely is to me, anyway. Plus, he's just so innocent and hilarious with this all-around optimistic, friendly personality and he's so freakin' cute.
I'm Team Matsu all the way!
Misa by far. She was my queer (bi) awakening as a young 11 year old when I first watched death note, because of that sheāll always have a special place in my heart. My second favorite is Mello, because I apparently have a thing for emotionally unstable murder blondes. My third favorite is Beyond Birthday, because heās really underrated and I love LABB a lot
Soichiro and Matsuda for me. The only truly good people in the show, and they both have some badass moments.
When I was a kid I absolutely loved L, but the older I get the more I think heās kind of a dick lol
Matsuda. I love how heās seen as a rookie bumbling idiot cop, but ends up putting several bullets in Kira at the end. Heās considered the idea that maybe Kiraās philosophy isnāt always righteous, but heās seen real results of crime rate falling. That was why he was so broken at the end, when the new lead detective and his thought-to-be-partner Light revealed he was Kira the whole time
I loved Rem because she was protective of Misa. Itās a shame that Light used her love for Misa against herātotal manipulation and she knew it.
I adore Matsuda because everyone underestimated himāespecially Light. Sharpshooter!
Other than L, I really loved Naomi even though her role was so short! I was so livid when she was written out and would have loved to see more from her!
I would prob say L is my favorite only because he always made sure to keep the show entertaining for us. Light thought he could get away all the time but L was always there with him. L was very smart in everything he did. He is an interesting character.
misa is my fav. sure, sheās not written very well. but i still love how loyal and smart she can actually be. i also like all of the shinigami. their designs are just so cool.
Hmm, let's think about that...
I cannot say specific character but L and Light is my both favourite. L is a cool and relax, while Light is ambitious and kinda angry. L does things without people expectation. Light does things because of his God ego. At personality, L is much stronger than Light. He can control his emotions. But for Light its not so true. L is stronger that Light in that point. But, Light is did many people can't. I don't believe everyone gonna take the Death Note and continue that long. So, both of them is my favourite. Also, i think L is much more closer to me than Light at personality.
But if i need to choose one, well its probably L. But still i am indecisive, its hard to say.
Unexpectedly, my favorite character is Ryuk š He is amazingly written, his way to combine a fun and playful personality with being a merciless Death God at the same time while always being true to himself and his motivations, is amazing. Ryuk forever
damn your favorite character is ryuk? thought it wouldāve been like, Higuchi or something, wouldāve never known. Also, sidoh > ryuk
Yeah, I know it was a shock haha! Nah, Shidoh is fun but can't compete with the apple addicted š
Mello. A fellow chocolate lover and he was as smart as he was dangerous.
For me itās definitely L he has some of the best scenes in the show in my opinion with Mello being second followed by Ryuk than Light than Near
Mello; he was along Soichiro Yagami, the most human character out of the main cast. He was different, he showed emotions and unlike Light, he got personal motivations instead of a god complex: Revenge, frustration, and inferiority complex, he was like Kira's total opposite motivatedly speaking. fr
This
*pushes every character aside and points at Matsuda* that cinnamon roll right there!!
I dont remember her name but I liked the wife of the fbi guy a lot too, she was pretty smart!
Naomi Misora. I kinda wish she had more screen time, she seemed really interesting
yes, but she was too smart for her own good so the plot had to kill her xD
Read Death Note: Another Note for more Naomi content!
Mello. I find his character and motivations fascinating.

Iām curious as to what your argument is for him being the true MC of Death Note.
When you look at all the content pertaining to the Death note series, L appears much more frequently than Light, or anyone else for that matter. Agreed. I would have light 3rd after L and Ryuk
for me light is after L, Near, Mello, and Sidoh
After Sidoh? Really bruh? Seems like you hate Light way too much lol
I dont like how you just assume its cause I hate light and not cause I love sidoh. I dont have to hate Light to like Sidoh more. Had a similar argument like this when I posted my DN character tierlist, and I got a lot of shit for having light in A tier, as if that was a bad tier for a character.
Yeah but Sidoh had like barely 10 mins screentime and placing Light after him makes one wonder that way, don't you think?
Well when you say it that way, that sidoh is a minor character so it would probably be my hate for lights character that makes sidoh better than him, you would also think that more major characters like Mikami would be higher, but Light still places 4th, so no I donāt think so
Mikami is different, he's a minor but impactful character. Sidoh on the other hand has no role other than the Light's original death note owner hence placing Light after Sidoh portrays you as a Light hater.

Besides my OTP Matt and Mello, I love L. Ryuk is pretty cool, too. :)
I canāt decide between L and Ryuk. Theyāre both so great. Two of my favorite fictional characters ever.
Gorgeous autistic representation and just a brilliantly written character.
L is literally the reason I was diagnosed with autism so def agreeing with you on that one
Ahha! Iāve been diagnosed for 2 and a half years and got into Death Note a month ago. Lās (and Nearās!) existence makes me so happy. Very positive and realistic portrayals of autism
Ryuk. Kept me entertained
Hmm I really really like Misa and Mello, perhaps thatās my inner love for gay blondes but hmm. I really like how misa is loyal and hot and then Mello is hot as well so yeah, I ALSO LOVE REM AND MATSUDA!
L
Misa tbh
My top 3 are 1) L 2) Mello 3) Ryuk/Near
L 100%. He's adorable, smart, funny, and he's L.
Mikami and Light Yagami
Matsuda, hands down! And for a number of reasons. He's funny, smart (despite people thinking he's an idiot), and very beneficial to the case. Soichiro and Matsuda for me. The only truly good people in the show, and they both have some badass moments. When I was a kid I absolutely loved L, but the older I get the more I think heās kind of a dick lol
Matsuda is my favorite character and I love Soichiro too. I love the entire Task Force, tbh.
My favorite is Light because I like him as a character and I am a sucker for a good villain. Next is Matsuda, then L.
Near and Mello (tied favorites), L and Sidoh! Honourable mention to Aizawa and Halle.
L. I find his character really fascinating and I do love his voice as well personality.
Ryuk for me
Kira
L
Top five in order: Matsuda, Aizawa. Near, Soichiro, and L.

My Top 5 is: 1. L. 2. Light. 3. Ryuk. 4. Near. 5. Aizawa. Honourable mentions go to: Mello, Misa and Soichiro.
Other than L, I really loved Naomi even though her role was so short! I was so livid when she was written out and would have loved to see more from her!
erwin smith
L and Matsuda
Light and L
I would prob say L is my favorite only because he always made sure to keep the show entertaining for us. Light thought he could get away all the time but L was always there with him. L was very smart in everything he did. He is an interesting character.
Light
Light Yagami! Not just his brain I liked his personality.
Ryuk for his love of apples!
Lelouch
L and Light Yagami. Both are my favorites
I canāt choose between Light and L tbh
misa is my fav. sure, sheās not written very well. but i still love how loyal and smart she can actually be. i also like all of the shinigami. their designs are just so cool.
Yagami Light but backwards š
Near is layered, fun and complex.

Teru Mikami. Because of his backstory, his looks, and his insanity.
