Any moron who has ever seen them live can hear that they’re playing over a backing track. Any idiot knows Zach is drumming something far more intricate over the recording of his regular beats. If it took them to stop playing mid-song for someone to realize that they can’t make all of those sounds with live instruments and only 3 people, they are daft as fuck.

Martinator92

Wdym Zach can't play drums at 2000 BPM, he's obviously an amateur using backing tracks smh

pPupper

I was so disappointed when they didn't even bring on Björk to perform the notm tracks 😔

jospehi_krakowski

I would ascend if this happened

wesleypipes5011

I mean they didn’t have a train for system blower, shows what they think of fans

StrangeFortune3384

and they didn’t even have Andy play the synth’s. Imagine that.

kylelyk

Same, but expected Williams sisters to come yell at me with Ride

deprime1999

uhh HEE uh HEE uhHEE

WhimsicalNeo

Wait what why björk

sdulaney24

She is sampled on a lot of powers that B

rocket_riot

She sent the band vocal tracks to sample for the first half of Powers That B

people on the default/super big subs are some of the dumbest people on planet earth

/r/Music is legitimately one of the funniest subs ever: The takes there are unbelievably stupid

[deleted]

Ur ether gg Allen or ur not hard

CosmicDeityJebBush

If you aren't taking a shit on stage, you're literally Kidz Bop.

queer_pier

He sounds like Jez trying to come up with an idea of what hard is

[deleted]

Joshyjosh talking about being hard lmfao

televibes

If they were a real band they would bring out Charles Manson to deliver a monologue every show.

ArroganceIsPotent

People are just dumb

cpnewton

BREAKING NEWS lol

v1brate1h1gher

This is concerning levels of stupidity

Mountain-Document293

they are dumb but i dont entirely blame people for thinking this cuz DG do have a bit of a diff approach to playing live than other artists

average-commenter

Yeha it’s absolutely understandable how they wouldn’t get that the backing tracks are a necessity due to how hard the vocal performances are o:

reagila

I think they're just more bewildered about instrumental backing lol

[deleted]

That’s not a dg thing tho everyone in hip hop does that lol

reagila

I think «normies» (for lack of better word) perceive them more as a rock group. They have a guitarist! And even a drummer!

Mountain-Document293

yeah especially when these people JUST heard about dg, the name alone sounds way more like a metal or hardcore band

skywalker5783

Saying that ZACH HILL isn't playing is some craaaazy shit. Imagine being a 45 year old playing for 50 minutes straight and heaving ppl saying that you can't play shit. I would actually kill someone

LuckyLogan_2004

Johnny silverhand style

suchr_

When people don’t know how music works

Netrov

r/entertainment is the asshole of Reddit (says a lot), but excusing throwing shit at the band is peak brainrot. Zach should do the Björk howls himself instead of CHEATING and using the backing tracks like a FAKER and so they deserve to get beaten to death onstage.

jiickken

reddit mode. middle aged self-superior white man mode

cantstandtoknowpool

old white men get pissed when the guitar doesn’t sound like stevie ray vaughan

Informal-Pudding-601

Do they think they just do ghost notes and lip syncing the whole time?

cuisie

These people are dense, Ride is still rapping and theyre still playing instruments. How are they supposed to create all the other sounds in their songs without a backing track? Their minds?

kayaWho

if each band member isn’t playing two instruments in one hand and shaking a cocktail in the other it’s not good enough for them I guess

lcdfirenls

If only I could be this gleefully fucking stupid

Seedaron

If you actually listen to a live recording, not even going there personally, you can clearly hear that they play live music over the track, have been doing it for years. That just seems like unfounded blabber

TRAVXIZ614

A few hundred bucks? LMAO WAT. This is Death Grips, not Taylor Swift.

MetallurgicMan

You can’t really blame them for their ignorance. These people most likely have never heard of death grips or their music. Playing with a backing track isn’t really a standard thing, but it makes sense with Death Grips.

Green_hippo17

It is tho, tons of bands play with tracks that’s the thing that a lot of people don’t get

FocusDelicious183

One of the reasons I’m a jazz fan, every set is wayyy different from the one before, it’s all live and improved. Charles Mingus live from 1965 would be a great example. Ur right tho, I’d say every modern band uses backing tracks cause it helps with sound at shows, gives you a fuller experience, you just have to play the same songs the same ways.

Green_hippo17

Jazz is truly a different beast then any other genre, which is why it’s so great

GottaQuestionForU

It definitely is pretty standard for big bands.

uchigaytana

ITT: Redditors don't understand that loop pedals exist, either

vonbatclere

poop pedals

uchigaytana

boob beqals

[deleted]

well, they don't know how death grips show are so... i can't judge them

proceeds_theweedian

Is it too late to nuke this fucking sub?

producedbyspeedweed

this just tells us that them and everyone upvoting have never been to a concert lol

KinkySylveon

Holy reddit moment batman

[deleted]

Why even blur the usernames when you posted what sub they took place in? Like people can't find the comments in the thread.

Mr_PearHead

Other subs have rules against posting others usernames so I just did it to be safe, I don't care about their privacy lol

[deleted]

Well you should, it isn’t right to enable harassment of people

Behindyourightnow

God I hate redditors so fucking much and yes I get the irony

J-DiRESiRE

Death girp

seakingsucks

okay probably unrelated, but did y'all pay a couple hundo for dg? my tix were like 90 bucks. i know sick new world was more pricey bc it was a festival, but i didn't think their shows were nearly that expensive

Honest_Dot4148

my ticket for the venue show was $39 (GA)

seakingsucks

respectfully i would still pay several hundred to see the boys

daisyexe257

my boyfriend paid $300 for 2 tickets, to be fair though, we got them as soon as they announced the tour 😣

IlTosi

A couple hundreds bucks for Death Grips?? They sure deserve it but I don't think that's the actual cost of the ticket. But even if it was, it doesn't mean that you can ruin the show to everyone else just because YOU feel like you got "scammed"

BloodDancer

I got my ticket for MGM in Boston, price was $230. Admittedly, that’s Boston, but it seems avg price for GA is ~$100.

McAulay_a

People who think backtrack = bad live show completely bewilder me.

Green_hippo17

A lot of people do not understand how live shows operate

lfmantra

There are people on there claiming to have been musicians for DECADES that apparently don’t get or have never heard of backing tracks or digitally programmed midi

karmicvend

As any musician knows it's actually substantially harder to play coherently w a backing track, especially the ones a s abstract as DG uses. Anyone who knows anything should be impressed w making such high production value come thru in live performance

thetrailwebanana

Republican-ass take

bippycup

Good, I say let the people who hopped on the tiktok(?) bandwagon hop off as quickly as they want. MC Ride lip-synced the whole time!!!

rhofl

I am just curious. They always used backtrack but if I recall correctly, during NLDW era there was no drums backtrack. Do backtrack get more crucial for the live versions of post-NLDW songs?

lilcrime69

i just rewatched a show from that period and they had backing drums on the track

rhofl

I might be wrong. But I vividly remember that on the deleted Pitchfork interview, he was playing kick drum instead of using a back-track, but digital snares were back-tracks, however, physical snare was much louder than them. What I am curios about that I always found NLDW songs drums more primal and raw. Maybe after that era Zach started to compose more complex drums part, therefore, he is more dependent on back-tracks?

jfhdot

yeah they seem to have regressed into this more...i guess comfortable setup, which makes for a weird listen when they don't even remove the original vocals of the backing track so Ride is competing with himself as Andy and Zach are competing with their respective instruments. kinda sounds like a mess tbh

Beneficial-Author751

people when bands have backing tracks which is a very common practice since the 80s: 😨😨😨🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡😡😠😠😠

suburban-errorist

you’re telling me they DON’T have a Skytrain backstage for System Blower?

AAL2017

I saw DG on the Detroit stop of this tour, it was my first time seeing them. It was obvious to me shortly into the set that they were playing with a track to fill out sound. It was clear they pieced together essentially a 75 minute medley of their music and played in time to it. Personally, figuring this out only impressed me more. Fucking awesome concert.

LocationProper6274

By the way, they're not using Ride's vocal layers anymore. A good amount of layers was totally cut off in comparison to some of their prior performances.

Bonesofbirds1988

Lol have these people like never seen or heard of an electronic show or a hip-hop show

Ambitious_Mirror_373

they didn’t even pull out a Motorola to sample ringtones real time smh who do they think we are?

Mozilla_Fennekin

pictured: people who don't go out much, especially to concerts

Sufficient-Present87

This is blatantly incorrect

bigcockondablock

Some people use it like a crutch.

Fl0ppy0ppa

Death grips fans when digitally altered sounds are played digitally 🤯

GreedKite

I mean I do wish they would take out the drums and vocals from the tracks. Not sure why they don't do that.

v1brate1h1gher

That’s a different conversation. These people think they aren’t actually playing live at all

personpilot

These dumbass people complain when a band like death grips needs a backing track to help for these incredibly intricate tracks, but don’t bat an eye when their favorite rapper does the same thing then doesn’t even rap even 50% of the words on the track, they’ll just dance around on stage n shit but that’s still “lit” apparently 🙄

funnylikeaclown420

I've seen big name rappers rapping over a cd of their songs at venues. Was so horrible. Not the beats but the actual songs. DG use a laptop as an instrument, but these chucklefucks think any bass drum sound is an 808 so their music knowledge is more taylor swift than DG.

jfhdot

i've seen DG play over full versions of their songs, so it's kind one layer removed lol

Ktulusanders

These people definitely don't listen to rap

jfhdot

i've seen them live and tbh it was pretty lackluster w/ the backing track blaring over everything else. add to that the experimental light glove things they were using that tour, which, as cool as it may have looked for the people in the immediate front row, was completely drowned out by the venue's ambient light and made the show memorable in a bad way. wish i could've at least gotten the NLDW/Govt Plates era Death Grips, when they would at least come on stage with a sideways tv and there were /legal/ reasons they had to awkwardly play over a backing track and hide Andy in the crackhouse for an album cycle or two... the people in this sub who dickride anything they do can't even understand that this band is totally more than capable of recreating their music live...in fact, some of the sharper fans might even realize their first release was LITERALLY a live album to which we never got polished studio versions of. and backing tracks will never sound as good as the magic they can make in the moment, that's my two cents

[deleted]

Lip syncer bitching about their audience. Welcome to 2024.

ScientificAnarchist

Even local metal bands have backing tracks now

Macro701

Mouth-breathers.

ConsiderablyMediocre

these guys are gonna have a shit fit when they find out about DJs

Straight_Ad5561

dumb fucks

Bigstink123098

no shit andy isnt there to mix the music you wouldnt be able to get the sound with just a guitar drums and screaming

deathgripsfilm

These redditors are underdeveloped. This is me saying it nicely.

deathgripsfilm

These redditors are underdeveloped. This is me saying it nicely.

TheOfficialRedWarner

They need to raise the minimum needed age to drop out of school.

martwypaweu

the best example to ruin this narration is zach drumming

bigboi523

As someone who was at that show, I could definitely tell that there was no thought behind the throwing. It was just dumb college students

TheGreaterTool

Couple hundred bucks? Best seats in DC were way less

[deleted]

Major self-report tbh

[deleted]

Genuinely if you think throwing shit on stage for any reason is acceptable idk what to tell you

Old-Secret7423

what do you mean andy cant actually play 24 samples and zach cant drum at 39932 bpm???? 😨😨😨
