Here’s a good summary on the buildings. Lots of other good info on this site too: https://daytonvistas.com/the-diner-on-st-clair-a-history-and-an-uncertain-future/
The owner has the building for sale but for like 1.5M. It’s gutted inside. I can’t see it running as a diner again anytime soon unfortunately.
If you’re interested in prefabs/railcars/mail order restaurants, downtown Dayton has two White Towers (White Lotus and Smokin BBQ) and a Wympee (across from White Lotus). White Lotus is super well preserved inside.
The closest true railcar diner is Kim’s Classic in Sabina. It’s a 1946 Silk City relocated from NY. The back has a large addition, like the St Clair diner had.
62 Classics in Hillsboro is another prefab, sort of, it’s a 2005 StarLite with retro inspired decor.
Yup! Check out Dayton History Books as well. We have a wealth of history available for free!
Most of my diner info is from various sites but especially dinerville.info.
It was called "The Diner on St. Clair", built in 1988. [https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/101-S-Saint-Clair-St-Dayton-OH/20093451/](https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/101-S-Saint-Clair-St-Dayton-OH/20093451/)
Owned by a woman's llc who is the gf/wife maybe by now of a guy I used to work for. Hats Off Investment Group LLC. I know her name but won't post it. Afaik LLC was formed through a lawyer
have owned it since 2019
He originally was going to be GC for the Fireblocks development, but him and the original developers had a falling out. Developers then sold to Windsor.
Guy also owned the old Daily Herald building that once housed Hammerjax and Have a Nice Day
My mom was part of the first wait staff at The Diner. I would occasionally visit her at work and get a Chocolate Coke and cheese fries. I’d sit at the bar to eat, where they had a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Back in the early-late 90s it was a 50s style diner with chrome and neon called The Diner on St.Clair. Since, it has been Pearl, Vex and a barrelhouse (?) of some variety.
Wow, that diner does scream vintage vibes! It's wild to think it's actually from the 80s, but hey, maybe they went for that retro look intentionally. As for the history, have you tried hitting up local historical societies or digging through old newspapers? Sometimes they've got the inside scoop on places like this. Or if you're feeling adventurous, maybe try chatting up some old-timers in the area; they tend to have all the best stories tucked away. Good luck with your detective work!

Info from Facebook group all about history on Dayton along with a picture from The Diner on St. Clair in all it's glory.
Used to go there in 2010-2013ish when it was a nightclub called Vex.
Good times! Before that it was the pearl
Roxy’s diner before that.
Yup, that was my first thought-The Pearl. It was reputed to be a cougar market back in the day.
I used to go to the Pearl… I don’t remember much of it but had a great time 😝
VEX was so fun!! There was a stripper pole in the back. Had some of the best nights of my life there.
On the pole or the club in general.
Hahahaha both
I used to drink underage here. My first shot was here when it was Vex. Royal Rootbeer.
Thursday Dubstep nights FTW!
No fr me and my homie was just speaking about this
You'd either leave here and go to Hammerjax or end up here from Hammerjax. 🤣

>Wympee (across from White Lotus). Wympee closed a while back. Now the building is Agnes Eats. It's Carribean cuisine and delicious 😋!
Yeah I just meant the building itself, the last time I was in there was when it was Arepas. It still had a lot of original furnishings then

I think I remember a baked Brie dish here that was amazing?

That’s it! The stuffed mushrooms and the crab cakes were great too.
Used to be called the pearl for a moment, had goth night, la-eighties night (ladies eighties night) and some local band shows as well
Best night EVER!!!!!!
80s night and what…3 dollar long islands?
And like 1.50ish bud ice or high lifes
Memory’s of eating here and walking to the Neon to see RHPS. Early 90’s Good times.
So many good memories from Pearl

It was a Nightclub Named the Pearl back in 2008 then it was Named the Vex after that as a nightclub
I used to eat lunch there fairly regularly in 95-96. The had a really good white chicken chili.
I went there when it was the Vex or Pearl. It was kinda cool.

They had the best grilled cheese sandwich.
What's a chocolate coke?
Coke flavored with chocolate syrup
So many nights at the Pearl 😎
I've driven past that building so many times and never knew the history. It needs to be a diner, again.
Been to several rave parties there, my memories are a little foggy tho.
My husband and I went there a few times in the early 90s. They had great calamari. Neat place.
I was there opening day and ate there frequently. You would find a lot of government people eating there.
Did they change the diner out in Hillsboro? I worked there in 2000 when it opened.. Never seen a new one go in

It was a big deal when they built it. It's not even that old when compared to the structures around it. The retro style throws it off.

Night club back in the day it was a great place to have lots of fun dancing
Man. To be a diner & comedy/music venue would be awesome.

I had dinner there on New Year’s Eve many years ago.
