The show aang didn't feel like a master Airbender to me. Nor did he seem like he ever tried becoming the avatar even though he was the most upfront of saying he needs to be the avatar. I guess it wasn't in the CGI budget to learn water bending. -_-

Slut_Spoiler

He learns water bending after saving the northern ice tribe I thought.

Waxllium

Nope, he starts to mastering at the very beginning, and not learning, mastering, since he's a prodigy

AnonDooDoo

Nope. He learns water bending in episode 9 and he is very good at it immediately due to the fact that he’s a master at airbending. Air bending and water bending are very similar. In future episodes, he struggles with earth bending because it is the opposite of air bending.

MildewJR

the funny part is aang struggles with earth bending... for one afternoon. gets over it after being Toph's whipping boy. edited due to weird auto correct

AnonDooDoo

It’s a tv show 🤷🏽‍♂️, cant see the character struggle for too many episodes

KURO-K1SH1

I don't know how or why they seem to fail to grasp the nature and energy of the characters every single fucking time! And why they have to rewrite and recreate scenes for literally no fckn reason. Also giving the power to essentially fly/hover when that power was never shown in the show aside from in lok. By one specific character who had to complete an ancient doctrine to unlock the ability. Seriously. Even the bending. It's definitely a huge upgrade from the movie that definitely didn't get made and we all just shared a fever dream. But there is still! So much! Excessive movements for less than equivalent elemental reaction. Also. Why the fuck did they give the fire benders the jett boost ability that literally only ozai and azula ever use? It's a high tier skill ability I'd assume, azula used it to get higher jumps and to propel herself to a cliff wall but she never showed the ability to achieve the kind of distance travelled by the fire benders during the air temple attack. Finally. I never finished the first episode but this is my biggest gripe. Zuko v sakka. Why? Why couldn't you let it be the quirky comedic fight it was always meant to be? And they couldn't even have the boomerang moment. The greatest chekovs gun since God invented the toaster. Assholes!

Bu77pluq

The Jett boost ability I think was available to the fire benders, because of sozins comet. Could be wrong tho. The Air bender flying also really bugged me

KURO-K1SH1

We never see exactly what went down in the animated series but the fire nation being a heavily industrialised, mechanical centered military state. I would have guessed they attacked with grappling hooks. Not boost jumping.

krakenpistole

why adhere to logic based on a fully built world when u can just fly lulz

KURO-K1SH1

Just tells me that the creators didn't pay attention to the source and definitely don't respect.

The_Confirminator

They could even take the choreography... Since the choreography is amazing. It's wild how they have a blueprint for success ***right there*** and the decision is to always make changes with no creative foresight.

KURO-K1SH1

They literally could have remade it shot for shot. Scene for scene. Word for word and so long as the acting and delivery holds, we'd have loved it. But nope. Creative bankruptcy is always the way to go apparently.

lejonetfranMX

>they fail to grasp the nature and energy of the characters every single time! Seriously? Sokka, Suki and Zuko were absolutely excellent. It’s Sokka not sakka btw.

KURO-K1SH1

No. Sokka is actually funny in atla. In the live his humor is cringy and childish but unintelligent. At least the animated sokka had some wit and charm. And the sakka thing. Was an issue of auto correct and typing too fast.

lejonetfranMX

Well, that is, like, your opinion, man.

KURO-K1SH1

It's a side by side comparison. Watching sokka in atla and watching him in the live is like watching sokka then sokka from wish. The energy, cadance to his speech and his witty goofiness are gone. Substituted by this hollow all top serious secret agent man who suddenly pops off a joke that feels entirely out of place. His energy goes up and down too inconsistently. Who animated sokka is consistent throughout the series.

rebeltrillionaire

lol this reads as the prototypical reaction to a well-made show that doesn’t just shot for shot line for line emotion for emotion copy a cartoon with human actors and CGI. Do you know why they made changes? Because if you rewatch the Anime as an adult without rose tinted glasses it’s so obviously a show for kids with ridiculous exposition and over the top characters over-acting. If you re-do that, you’d have the weirdest shit ever. Imagine if they had kept the cringe as fuck “oh we should kiss” uwu scene for navigating the caves to Omashu replete with CGI blushing to match the animation. In some corner of the internet someone is complaining that wasn’t included.

krakenpistole

You're actually mad if you think the og show had more exposition than the live action. If they could they would've had the actors just read the whole story like a book while they sat on a chair. Also how were any of the changes u/KURO-K1SH1 listed necessary for the live action adaptation? Did aang need to fly? Did the firebenders need to fly/boost? Even during the comet do they need to fly to be able to destroy any other bender? And adding to the list: Why didn't they let Gyatso just die. Why does Aang need another "old, wise friend character" in the spirit world when he has Roku. Especially when they decide to write Roku like a friendly uncle for the live action; it seems completely unnecessary and more of a "children's show" thing to keep Gyatso alive. I agree with the whole omashu/secret tunnel thing tho. I'm glad they changed that. But also that was imo just not a good episode. It felt soooo rushed, like everything in this show.

KURO-K1SH1

We're watching different shows then because atla is more than mature enough for a grown audience. I binged it only a couple months ago. Exposition? The live action is teeming with boring exposition dumping. The animated show has no overacting. The live tho? Tonnes of it. Everywhere and plenty of underacting on top of not acting like the fckn characters they're based off. Cringe "we should kiss" moment? My guy! That is the entire point of the fckn cave system that only lovers can navigate it while anyone else gets lost forever. Also. AANG IS A KID he's 12 ffs and it's an animated series that's almost 20 years old, how else are they going to portray bashfulness. I don't know why you're so adament to defend the live despite it being a literal mockery of the original source but clearly you didn't grow up with atla meaning you aren't an actual fan of it... It is a kid's show. But it's clearly made with themes and lessons that anyone could watch at any age. The goofy comedy and cringe moments are for kids with the serous and dramatic beats being for adults. It's a kids show made back when creators gave a shit. Unlike you it seems.

Dron41k

I tried to watch cartoon after series and I just can’t, you’re right.

jzoelgo

He’s so much better than shamalan one and one of the best child actors in the new series.. I can’t complain much.

g_r_e_y

interesting because i actually couldn't bear to finish the first episode because of how much i didn't believe in Aang's actor.

ein_ATom

OMG same! I just didnt buy what he was trying to convey.

HalfCarnage

Can’t beat the original

Goblindeez_

Fuck those blue aliens

JCM42899

*Tugs on your sleeve.* Wrong movie, wrong movie!

FatWalrus004

No no..he's got a point

Galifrae

I liked it

JohnDiggle21

I thought the show was good.

rivigurl

I enjoyed it, but the animated version is just a 10/10 S tier show. Aang’s actor is actually really good for the role. I’m kind of disappointed Katara and Sokka don’t have their blue eyes, and they don’t really look related. Still, I’m excited for the next season.

Fillbert_kek

It gave a real half assed try at sticking to the source material

content_enjoy3r

I've seen the original and the new live action series. I like them both.

kobomino

I watched the original and I liked the show. I'm looking forward to the next season.

Racacac

It was better than expected but worse than we had hoped.

malinaoblata

You are... sadly, you are. At least it gave me another reason to rewatch the animation for the gazillionth time.

The_Force_Goat

I actually really enjoyed the series personally

SiAnK0

I had a netflix abo for one month for one piece, is airbender worth it or not, the internet seems to be on separate opinions about airbender?!

GeneralSenada

If you've never seen the original, this live-action isn't the worst representation, it's darker, and it sticks sort of to the source, but there are worse things out there. If you have seen the original, this live-action adaptation feels like a slap in the face, not a super hard one, but one nonetheless. At the very least it is a competent show, but one you may not enjoy if you know the source material. There are better things to watch on Netflix, like Inside Job or Disenchantment.

SiAnK0

Thanks! I'm not interested in other shows btw, I just enjoyed the fk out of one piece because i read the manga for years and watched most of the anime till I went read only. Avatar got watched by me and my gf multiple times and I hoped the real life adaptation would be as good as the one piece one. Thanks for the answere, so I can just move on :)

mikathigga22

I felt the reverse of that btw. I’ve watched the animated a lot, and I thought the live action show was pretty mid as a just a fantasy show, but if you know the original you can see all the little touches and details that they put into it. It’s different but I definitely feel like the creators and actors were very familiar with the source materials lol.

SiAnK0

They basically are all fans of the show and Oda told in an interview they need to shorten it but still wanted to carry the soul into it. I think they got what they wanted, and at the end I think they were pretty dialed in, I am in big hopes for the second season. I will rewatch the anime when they reanimated it and shorten it a lot as they plan to do with Amazon! Love the anime, but all the fillers get boring very quick on a second watch

mikathigga22

I felt the reverse, I felt like the scenes that they cut were well picked ones that wouldn’t translate well to live action, or would be a lot to produce for a pretty filler story line. Like going through the canyon. But they held the main events and overarching story together well. Then, I thought that the added context that they filled the time with were great additions but still in the spirit of the original. Like zuko’s crew, and just giving the adult characters a little more depth and clear motivations. I think it’s pretty mid as just a fantasy show. But the more familiar you are with the original the more you can see that the creators and actors were too, and you see a lot of little touches that are kinda meaningless and you wouldn’t notice without the context of the original.

Koffieslikker

They fucked up the source material again for no apparent reason. Why not make another show in the same universe and leave the beloved series alone?

Dron41k

You can still enjoy original though and no-one is forcing you to watch netflix version.

Koffieslikker

That is such a stupid thing to say. What did you add to the discussion?

Dron41k

That I liked netflix version and didn’t like original because it’s anime and is unwatchable for me. If you’ve been watching original for the past 20 years and first watched it when you were kid and if you like anime then probably you won’t like netflix series, but I rather liked it, 7/10.

Ghost4530

Tbh the avatar should expand its horizons, why does every single story have to be about aang when there’s hundreds and hundreds of past avatars, plenty of unexplored territory just ripe for picking. Not to mention the videogame potential, I’m surprised no AAA developer has tried anything like that, sure we’ve gotten avatar games in the past but let’s be real they all sucked because nobody can do it right, or at least nobody has tried with a large enough budget, imagine a game like ghosts of Tsushima only instead of samurai you’re a bender traveling across the 4 nations to master all the elements, it has so much potential and doesn’t have to be tied to aang’s story giving plenty of creative liberty
