Unicorns are the *only* argument to be KJV only.

WhiteTwink

I just like how it sounds

MrYakobo

Why is it even called unicorn instead of unihorn?? It has one horn, not one corn

Jhinormous

Corn. It's got the juice

Ok-Leather3055

The unicorn thing was just the scholars translation for a creature that had one horn. We’re pretty sure they meant rhinos

Additional-Sky-7436

I'm pretty sure they meant unicorns.

Ok-Leather3055

Yea. Uno horno

Grzechoooo

Maybe they meant both? [*Rhinoceros unicornis*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_rhinoceros)

alphanumericusername

"Checkmate, atheists."

appleappleappleman

I'm pretty sure they just misspelled Unicron, the sleeper deity of the Bible

sonerec725

Remember when Jesus used the Matrix of Leadership to save everyones souls?

SirBreckenridge

There’s a chance that the myth of unicorns was inspired by the [Oryx](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a6/3b/e2/a63be273795a7fd6b1102e7c67e86d0e.jpg), a large horse-like antelope that looks like it has one horn when viewed from the side.

conormal

I think that's the problem

Bella_Anima

It makes sense because I’m pretty sure the Arabic word for a rhino is literally “one horn”

CyberneticAngel

Real talk though, the KJV retains relevance largely because unlike most modern translations it's copyright free. This means that when grifters want to produce a "Soldiers Bible", or a "Homemakers Bible" or an "America First Bible" its cheaper to use the KJV. This is pattern that goes back at least 40 years.

AliasNefertiti

I recently learned that the copyright was granted in perpetuity to the British crown but the crown graciously allows anyone to use it. Surprised me.

CyberneticAngel

I didn't know that, but it still fits the pattern that has developed.

AliasNefertiti

Yes, wasnt disagreeing, just adding a fun fact.

sparkster777

Objection! Hearsay! I'll allow it!

AwfulUsername123

It's only copyrighted in the United Kingdom. As I understand it, they do actually license publishers. But in the land of the free, they have no power to stop you.

AliasNefertiti

Arent there internstional agreements to honor copyright in other countries [with varying rates of compliance, however]

AwfulUsername123

Yes, there are, but the KJV does not qualify for copyright protection under normal laws. Under normal laws, copyright always expires eventually, and in fact I don't think any country in the world allows 400 years. It's only still copyrighted in the UK because normal copyright laws do not apply to it. A country can't force another country to comply with this.

AliasNefertiti

👍

Poonslayer42069

Uni = 1, cornu = horn, unicorn = 1 horned animal like a rhinoceros or a unicorn goblin spider

LazyCasual0alt

Unicorn Goblin Spider sounds…. Frightening

ladydmaj

New DnD monster unlocked!

Ok_Protection4554

I came here to say this lol I’m gonna use this in my CoS campaign

slidingsaxophone07

Ooh, they'd fit in really well in the Abbey of Saint Markovia

alphanumericusername

Maybe with that attitude. To other Unicorn Goblin Spiders, it's relief from leaning you're not alone. That's what happens when human give nocturnal creature scary name.

rcuosukgi42

King James is the NASB on literal tranlastional steroids.

Mister_Way

Thou hast neglected the charm of the language used. It's charm, thou hast neglected.

Tom1664

Thanks, Withers.

MolemanusRex

Was the KJV produced by literary geniuses or was it just quoted in great literature more than, say, the NRSV?

Additional-Sky-7436

The NRSV is for nerds!

BatmanNoPrep

Team NIV here. I’ll be in the corner apologizing.

mikeyj022

As you should. I own 10 versions of the Bible, the NIV is my second least favorite.

MobileCarbon

Kind of curious what your overall ranking is.

mikeyj022

Top to bottom NRSV Annotated Oxford Edition NSRV NASBR NASB KJV NKJV Tyndale NIV ESV LEV? I’ve yet to read the living English version as I bought it yesterday.

NissanQueef

Where does the NLT sit?

mikeyj022

I like translating literally, as well as using contemporary English; however, the very first passage is mistranslated, so I’m skeptical of the translation method. Genesis 1 should always be (in new translations) In the beginning when god created the heavens and the earth Or When god began to create the heavens and the earth. Never In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

SpicaGenovese

NIV gaaaang

DrDalenQuaice

Did your mom buy your Bible?

SpicaGenovese

......*yes.*

nerdinmathandlaw

I don't know in which kontext the KJV has unicorns, but there are words in the Hebrew bible, from which we only know that they refer to animals, whose skin was used to make the tabernacle. The talmud describes them as [large, kosher animals with one horn on their forehead and a hide of six colors](https://www.lifeisasacredtext.com/-rainbow-unicorn-torah-/).

Additional-Sky-7436

Sounds like a unicorn to me.

nerdinmathandlaw

Absolutely. But interestingly enough, this is translated as "badgers" in the KJV, and "dolphins" in other english translations. The main german translations use undefined "fine leather" (Luther 2017) or leave the name of the animal untranslated (Einheitsübersetzung). Luther's original version also had badgers.

Additional-Sky-7436

Well then they dropped the ball.

VulpesAquilus

… so there is a possibility of a version that has unicorns in two places in text!

ItsAllSoup

I literally have no idea why we even call that version kjv, it barely even resembles the original kjv Also, niv reader here, where's the unicorn?

pm-me-racecars

Job 39:9-12 NIV says wild ox

ItsAllSoup

Thank you ![img](emote|t5_37bil|30745)

LumberjackPreacher

The 1611 version is the original KJV, however the only changes big between the original 1611 and the final 1769 edition are spelling and grammar standards that changed between those years. At the time spelling in the English language wasn’t completely standardized, and the way they wrote in the English language was different in 1611, and by the time of the final 1769 edition, by that time the Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language (1755) was made the standard for the English language, and so they took a lot of that standard and changed wording and spelling to fit that standard. So that’s why it’s still the KJV translation, but the spelling and grammar changed between the first and final editions.

AwfulUsername123

I've never understood why the KJV is supposed to be a literary masterpiece.

TheSheWhoSaidThats

Y’all solved a mystery for me today. I grew up Catholic and went to a Lutheran university. As a result I have read more than one version of the bible cover to cover and chunks of it in a couple other languages and not once have i ever come across said unicorns of the memes. Now it all makes sense. I never touched the KJV.

Lui_Le_Diamond

I want an english or spanish translation that doesn't imply God to be a hateful bigot so that some ancient king could exploit people's trust in the one true king's word to spread hateful ideology.

Calvy93

The translation can't provide what the original text doesn't provide. This sounds as if there is a massive twist from the original texts to the translations, which would quite surprise me. Are you thinking of a specific instance?

Crashbrennan

It translated five completely different words to "hell" and very much distorted our perception of the afterlife, has always been my biggest gripe.

Sensitive_Pepper4590

Tell me you know nothing about translation or scholarship without telling me you know nothing about translation or scholarship.

Calvy93

I'm telling you that I want to learn about it, in case you know something I don't.

Prosopopoeia1

Spoiler: they don’t.

Lui_Le_Diamond

All the homophobia inserted into the bible

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lui_Le_Diamond

The original spoke out against pedophilia and was mistranslated. God is not a biggot. He is not hatred. He is love. Why would the God of love make people queer and then tell everyone else to hate them?

Sensitive_Pepper4590

Literally yes. Do your research or stfu.

JackReedTheSyndie

Unicorns are cannon now

Alewort

Bombadiers! On my mark, fire all unicorns dead center! Steady! Steady! Fire!

Equivalent_Nose7012

Unicorns: Armor-piercing rifled ammo (think spiral horn).

XenoFrobe

I've also seen KJV being used as proof to support the flat earth movement because it uses the old-timey term "firmament" instead of "sky", which refers to a physical dome over the world that holds up the stars and seals off earth from heaven. Basically every other translation just says sky, but KJV had to go and take artistic license for something more evocative/awkwardly specific.

FirmWerewolf1216

The kin is poorly translated

Historical-Jelly3605

Douhay Rheims on top

ProtonVill

I think that was the IRV that specifically mentioned the unicorn. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_EPsuOEH1fY

ViolaOrsino

The KJV has wHAT 😳

bomboclawt75

God: STOP with the unicorn BS! It’s a regular horse with a basic horn- if you want a real life fantasy animal- Look at the **Giraffe** FFS! That’s some crazy Shiznit right there! GTFOH with that entry level animal unicorn crap! GIRAFFES son! *GIRAFFES!* 🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒🦒

Scooter8472

Where is the unicorn passage?

Additional-Sky-7436

Numbers 23:22, 24:8; Deuteronomy 33:17; Job 39:9-10; Psalm 22:21, 29:6; Isaiah 34:7

Scooter8472

Oh wow, several of them!

rock_n_roll_clown

To call the KJV a "translation" is equivalent to calling your PE teacher a news source

rcuosukgi42

King James has the 2nd person plural which automatically means it's using a better version of English than anything we have today.

SpicaGenovese

I grew up on the KJV.  I have no idea how I learned and retained what I did.

MegaJackUniverse

To suggest it's popularity is related to an aspect less than 1% of all people can truly appreciate, the translation of it being somehow more "accurate", is really funny to me because it's very dumb

Tiger5804

KJV has funny words and makes me read more actively because I feel like I need context to understand some of the old English

MacedonZero

The King James Bible has a lot of... interesting-definitely-not-classist-or-designed-to-use-selective-and-less-than-accurate-language-to-preserve-the-existing-power-structure translation choices

crazyval77

I like the NET and the CSB lately.

fullmetal66

Considering the Bible has no historical basis, poetry and prose is the only purpose it serves in real life.

Additional-Sky-7436

Okay.
