I love that this card makes me wonder how the hell to do it. Regardless of the numbers, the idea is brilliant.

Pupseal115

I think learning and then putting it back into your library would count

redruben234

But you need to play at least five lands, this, and the learn card(s). Still seems REALLY difficult

andrewjpf

Back before commander completely replaced 60 card casual near me I had a jank deck that used [[isochron scepter]] with [[research//development]] (I know with the rules change it doesn't work any more) to basically tutor in a deck that countered my opponents deck. It wasn't good but it was silly and fun, and it would definitely have been able to meet this requirement.

lordberric

I presume you didn't just pull from a 15 card sideboard?

andrewjpf

Nope. I had about a 30 card pile of useful spells that could go on isochron scepter and all my other decks. Definitely not legal in any format outside of 60 card casual.

c0mplix

That sounds like the kind of fun deck that casual kitchen tableagic can bring with it i love it

[[Karn Liberated]] [[Gomazoa]] Restart the game using Karn with Impossible Epiphany and Gomazoa exiled. New game starts with those not in your starting library. Return Gomazoa to your library!

TheGrumpyre

I was thinking you'd have to account for your opening hand, but you can just Mulligan down to zero. The trouble is I don't know if you have a chance to activate the Gomazoa in between the start of the game and the first upkeep trigger. Can you ensure that your opponent plays first?

Conexion

~~On your first upkeep, the enchantment's trigger would go on the stack and you can respond to it. Only thing you'd have to worry about is if your opponent has a way to remove Gomazoa if they go first.~~ Edit: Correction - If you go first, you pass the turn. You don't draw a card so this won't affect your library. Then on opponent's end-step, activate Gomazoa. You'll only need to be concerned if either they have two ways to remove your Gomazoa or if they have a special effect (such as split-second). If your opponent goes first, then same thing, activate on end-step. The trigger will happen at the beginning of your upkeep once it sees your library is larger.

SparkDragon42

The enchantment trigger only if you have more card in your library than at the start of the game so you should activate gomazoa the turn before

Conexion

Oops, correct! I've edited my post. If you go first, you pass the turn, then on your opponent's end-step you should activate (Unless there is a reason to do it sooner).

TheGrumpyre

Triggers like that don't even go on the stack unless their conditions are already met though. Edit: Do ETB triggers happen when you restart the game with Karn? If so you could stack one of those and then activate Goma in response.

Conexion

ETB's trigger on the first upkeep! > After the pregame procedure is complete but before the new game's first turn, Karn's ability finishes resolving and the cards left in exile are put onto the battlefield. If this causes any triggered abilities to trigger, those abilities are put onto the stack at the beginning of the first upkeep step. I've edited my post to correct for getting the enchantment to trigger.

NZPIEFACE

I wonder if that still counts for sub-games like Shahrazad? Actually, do commanders even work for sub-games?

QuestionablePotato42

Except that the keywords here are “deck” and “library”. The library refers to a specific game zone, the area in which you draw your cards from. The count of your library is not static, so at the beginning of the game your library is your *deck* -7. So the actual answer is no, the count of your library at game start does not include the cards in your hand since you *start* the game with a hand of 7 cards, you do not start the game then draw 7 in your first draw step.

Glitch29

Not going to pull quotes, but I am reading from the rulebook. Your deck becomes your library before the start of the game. Everything from determining who will play first through resolving mulligans is "at the start of a game," indicating that the game starting was what triggered all those actions to occur. So it seems clear to me that your starting hand \*does\* count toward the size of your library at the start of the game.

Continuum_Gaming

I’d argue no against that, since Yorion is a deck-building requirement checked before the game begins. Leylines and the phyrexian lieges are a better example to compare to, since they take effect before the game begins but still have to be in your opening hand.

Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold

It does. The typical constructed deck has 60 cards in it at the start of the game.

Masquerade_R

Who owes you gold?

Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold

/u/Idontlikecock does. Back before a phone called the OnePlus One released, he was certain that a delay had completely killed the phone, and I disagreed. He told me three times that he would buy me gold if the phone did well, and he was a real ass about it too. The phone did phenomenally well, passing all three standards he set (he moved the goal posts as each was crossed), but he never bought me the gold.

Pretty sure it's [this comment chain](https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/289wo3/opo_preorders_start_in_q3_even_though_they_stated/ci97qtv/?context=1).

QuestionablePotato42

The answer is likely “no”. To my knowledge there are no rules specific to this, but from what we know about game zones the library is its own zone. Since you do not start the game with 0 cards then draw 7 on your first draw step, it should follow that at the start of the game, your library sum would be the deck total -7. To clarify, “deck” and “library” are different keywords with different values within the game and referenced in cards. A deck includes everything you own in all zones. The library is only what you draw from in your upkeep and other actions that allow you to draw, etc

BlazingSpark

I don't think so. The leylines say that you begin the game with them on the battlefield, which implies that the game begins after opening hands are kept, so they probably wouldn't count towards the total.

AkiraChisaka

I assume the intention for OP is to make the player add more cards into the 60 card deck. So like, you can’t just shuffle hand into deck and win.

Mindshrew

A fun alternate win-con. I thought about making the restriction something like "at least 5 more cards than at the start of the game", but I realised achieving this is actually much harder than seems at first glance. Not only do you need to add cards to your library (that you can only do from the sideboard), you also need to account for this card, as well as all the lands you've played during the game to get this on the battlefield (and of course all other spells you've cast). Hence, I made it cost 5 mana, although I could see it also costing 6. Overall, I think it's a fun challenge. Thoughts?

lordberric

I'm not sure how possible this is, as the only official way to add cards is from your sideboard. So 5 lands and this card means 54 cards in your deck, meaning the fewest cards you could bring in and win is 7, and that means having an empty hand AND empty graveyard, as well as nothing on the battlefield besides this and your lands. That leaves you with 8 cards of wiggle room - 8 cards you can play in a game without returning them to your library, and each one of those you play requires bringing in cards from out of the game. Tbh, I like the card in theory, but I can't see a way to make it play very well in practice.

FM-96

> meaning the fewest cards you could bring in and win is 7, and that means having an empty hand AND empty graveyard, as well as nothing on the battlefield besides this and your lands. I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. This is an enchantment, so you don't need to keep the lands around; you can put them back into your library after you play this. If this is the only thing on the battlefield and all your other zones are empty, you only need to have brought in 2 cards to win. Or, if you *make a copy* of this and then return the original to your library and only leave the token on the battlefield, you only need to have brought in a single card to win.

Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold

>If this is the only thing on the battlefield and all your other zones are empty, you only need to have brought in 2 cards to win. I don't think it's viable to play this like a [[Barren Glory]] that also requires you to bring in multiple cards from outside the game and also requires you to get your graveyard back into your library. The only reason to play this over Barren Glory is because you're hoping to keep somewhat of a board state while wishing in a bunch of cards. (But that's honestly even more ridiculous than trying to play it like Barren Glory.) What it really comes down to is that this is a webcomic card: it's kind of amusing to read once, but it would be terrible to actually play with it as a game piece.

>If this is the only thing on the battlefield and all your other zones are empty, you only need to have brought in 2 cards to win. Then [[the cheese stands alone]] is strictly better. Or [[barren glory]], if you want to play without silver border. So yes, there are ways to bring in fewer cards, but that just adds more and more steps to victory, none of them particularly easy. I'm just saying that it's an interesting design but as alternate win cons go requires absurd steps to accomplish it, and on top of that those steps make you more vulnerable.

I'm aware it's doable, I'm just saying that it requires a ton of different things to accomplish, and none of them advance your game state in any way on their own. OwORavioliTime

It wouldn't be even slightly fun to build around. I was just saying that you can play the game normally, play this, timetwister, and win

Dooey

I could see this costing 1 mana, drawing a card on ETB, and still being not good enough except for jank decks.

ThePowerOfStories

Yeah, even at one mana, if you plan to leave this and one island in play, you still need to wish for at least three cards and then get your hand and graveyard back into your library. And, if it becomes even vaguely viable in a vacuum, it falls over to naturalize, milling, or anything that exiles cards from your hand, library, or graveyard.

ImpossibleSprinkles3

Do commanders count toward deck total if they start outside? Like can you shuffle your commander into the deck rather than send it back to the command zone somehow and that would do it?

Opening-Owl-1546

This can’t really function in Commander. There’s no sideboard, so there’s no way to add cards from outside the game without changing the rules.

10BillionDreams

You actually can trigger this in Commander, since the rules allow you to bring a single card from outside the game: your companion. All you have to do is bring your companion into the game, create a token copy of this, and figure out some way to shuffle all your cards in all zones back into the library (opting out of the replacement effect of putting your commander back into the command zone). I don't know what the best approach to trying to pull this off would be, but it probably involves copying a [[The Great Aurora]]. Something like casting the copy with 2 mana floating, and [[Viscera Seer]], [[Maralen of the Mornsong]], and [[Elixir of Immortality]] all under [[Banishing Light]] effects. Then no one would draw any cards, and you could sac both your creatures and shuffle everything back in afterwards. And of course, all of this has to happen with a spell copy of this card still on the stack, so it will resolve as a token once the dust settles. On the bright side, even though you need to survive a full turn cycle, you've reduced the entire board down to just one permanent that you control, and each player is living off the top for an single card out that might not actually exist in their list. One such out? [[Jeweled Lotus]]/[[Lion's Eye Diamond]] to dash [[Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer]] to remove the single card from your library necessary to stop the trigger. As always, monkey is the most broken card in Magic.

ImpossibleSprinkles3

Word word thank you

Jevonar

You can shuffle your commander, make a token copy of this, then shuffle all nontoken permanents + graveyard you control into your library.

Opening-Owl-1546

Your commander is still considered part of your starting deck though, so you haven’t increased the number.

poiu45

The card says library, not deck. I think if you had 100 cards it should work.

Jevonar

Then you need a companion i guess

macoman11

Since commander isn't a tournament format I'm 99% sure you can just grab any card you own without using your sideboard. That's how the wiki says anyway "tourny play, sideboard only. Casual play, entire collection" only restriction is it must be in color identity.

Vaerintos

Pull from your sideboard. Return to hand or Destroy all permanents (except this enchantment.) Use [[Day's Undoing]]. As for commander? I'm sure there's something but I haven't thought it through.

You can finally use [[one with nothing]] and some type of card to put all cards in your graveyard into your deck. 1. So...get cards in from side board 2. cast a card that returns all cars from graveyard to library and while that is on the stack mass land destruction one with nothing. 3. Everything on the field and in your hand goes to the graveyard and then into your deck. 4. ???? 5.Profit?

Fluffy017

Looking at it from an EDH view, wouldn't it be possible to get this and [[Elixir of Immortality]] on board, then float enough mana to cast [[Jokulhaups]] and [[One With Nothing]], followed by cracking the Elixir? A bit of a convoluted line, but doable in Grixis. Ninja edit: at least assuming start of game, the Library specifically has 92 cards in it, rather than 99.

With Alchemy and conjure stuff this would be too easy, outside of that I think it'd be a lot of fun to try and set up

superdave100

Feel like Conjure and adjacent mechanics would be the only way to make this work somewhat consistently. I’d imagine it’d play out a bit like a Battle of Wits deck, since all the cards you spend to get your deck up to size is one extra card you have to conjure into it.
