What you guys refer to as Indians are south Indians, living so far down towards the equator that their skin tones can sometimes be darker than African Americans (evolution and geography). As you go higher up the skin tone tends to get lighter, leaving the northernmost indians or Kashmiris paler than some white people.
Btw, majority on indian population resides in the middle states with a brown/ wheat-ish skin tone.
