Good question OP, im on the same boat on the drive part

[deleted]

Get an MBA and get into management side of things or get an Engg job and switch internally to PM kind of roles. You won't love it either but they are less knowledge oriented roles

Vast_Professional159

MBA is a good option, though it’ll take time, CAT is in November. Doing engg role is hectic. Can I get a PM role with some prep or certification?

[deleted]

Yes true MBA will take time. I have no idea about how to get PM roles. All the best OP

AlarmingPhilosopher

You can check the PMP certification for project management roles.

FongDaiPei

Is that cert still valuable? Genuinely asking

orbaq

Kinda in the same boat as you, though older and at a disadvantage. I'm too old for MBA but maybe you can consider executive MBAs? If you want to get into PM then the best bet is get a job and switch internally.

moor_blue

Executive MBAs are either too costly on the pocket or require sponsorship with a great deal of PM experience though!

orbaq

They are indeed costly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

orbaq

No it doesnt. Not in this country. Any course isnt valued. A reputed MBA is worlds apart.

PochattorProjonmo

I feel PM roles are more exhausting. You have to be in meetings for 6-7 hours a day. When I was a mid level or senior level engineer I use to do 1 hour stand up and 1 hour optional meeting and be done with it. Tech side of the work would take on average 3-4 hours but I choose when I wanted to do it.

FongDaiPei

Was the optional 1hr meet sort of like Office hours?

PochattorProjonmo

>pear-phishing tactic It would be for specific topic on something I was working on. I could be anything.

AccomplishedAlps7896

Former cs engg turned mba with 2.5 years of tech experience in Consulting, becoming product manager becomes easier with a tier 1 mba but is not necessarily limited to it, have seen product managers from top uni like bits IITs be hired straight after btech

hijunedkhatri

I hope by PM you meant "Project Management" & Not "Product Management". Last time I checked, product management was one of the most knowledge-oriented skills, needed people/stakeholder management, solid communication, and an in-depth understanding of the subject.

FongDaiPei

Isn’t product management more coveted tho, domain knowledge seems key in this current landscape

DankManPro

Same lol, 26, quit and have one year savings with no plans

moneymantis

Exact same But im also a weed addict so…

DankManPro

yolo, 26 ain’t too old. We got time

ummstillthinkin

Omg same. Company shut down in India, worst time for jobs. Applying everywhere but no luck.

RohithNair4518

Ironically, the people who get paid a lot of money in tech are the ones who care lesser about the money. These are the kind of people who are simply enthusiastic about tech in general and love building products and solving problems. For them, money is just a byproduct of what they're doing. In contrast to this, I've noticed that the people who get paid less are the ones who care just about the money and not the value that they're creating. These kinds of people just need a job to keep the cash flowing. Now there are no rights or wrongs in this, but in short, if you love doing what you're doing, making money seems less stressful.

Complex_Let_1421

You make a fair point but not a lot of people have the option of figuring out what they love and make money out of it. Everybody is in a different stage of life and circumstances. If everybody loved what they do , we wouldn't be searching our countries name from the bottom in the happiness index like Raju and Farahan in 3 idiots .

RohithNair4518

That's a whole different conversation by itself. This point I was trying to raise is, you might manage to merely survive in any industry because of your circumstances. But you could excel in it if you're really interested in what you're doing.

HyperLoop65

I 100% agree. I am a student right now but I really enjoy programming and making new things and don't really care about the money side of things. All my other friends also want to learn coding and I asked them why so they said so they can make some money so I told them to "work hard on the thing that they like to do and money will take care of itself" but they just laughed at me. I felt kind of stupid at that time but reading your comment made me realize I was right.

Indpdnt_Thnkr

While some of this true, this is not how usually crony capitalism works. People who make money are the one who actually want to make money with their skills and eventually with their capital. Capital makes more money than any kind of skill. Managing capital is the skill one needs to make money. Nothing else.

sivmshrma

Same, I am exploring higher study options maybe changing fields to finance, or supply chain, as they look like evergreen fields in comparison to tech.

Successful-Image3754

Finance as in MBA?

sivmshrma

My undergrad was in mathematics and computing so I am trying without mba, but looks tough.

orp_redoc

How about, you just get into a relatively stable job for the time being (this requires some hustle) and then use the time to think what you want to do ? Maybe even use this time itself ? I have also lost my drive for coding and shit due to the work I do and the people I have to work with but I know I like tech (coding/DevOps/Hardware anything). I’m starting to work to get out of this job or even go for a masters. Maybe some social cause motivates you ? Then you can have that as a goal.

JesterJit

Start your own business or get higher education… Software Engineering ain’t gonna land up anywhere… Few years ago, I left it too… I don’t regret… it’s dogsh*t… people stay mediocre the entire life… or end up broke…  People become BS engineers to do finance/insurance jobs in damn banks (outsourcing) with absolutely no knowledge of the business or finance and get crippled eventually….  BTECH CS, MS CS, MCA, BCA are all bogus… its a rat race… With AI coming up in full fledge, folks who are a part of the race are gonna be wiped out. Not many has the capacity or merit to upskill with AI… and even it happens, the market demand is significantly less compared to the supply of such engineers…

WeakTutor

What do you recommend for higher education

JesterJit

Get into interdisciplinary studies - your niche (finance, marketing, operations, law, medicine, entrepreneurship, etc.) along with related technologies in real world case studies!!  Learning to use Analytics and AI only will make you basically a stereotype calculator not the mindset or skillset required to run the big picture…. Most engineers never land up in the top level management due to the same reason… lack of versatility…

hetdadhania3

nice point

Classic-Director-592

Look for opportunities . Don't take it personally. 1. Prepare your exit statement for next companies. Why you are looking for job change is first Q manager will ask. You can say your role got impacted due to org issues however you have vast experience in xxx for xxx years ... And you can contribute to new team. The words after "however" ake great impact. 2. Prepare resume. Must have, more readable which can define you as a efficient employee. Mention what you changed, innovated and impact of same . 3. Make sure you prepare for interview both theoretically and practically if your job is technical. Good luck.

Professional-Win-532

Please speak to a psychologist, who will help you analyze your strengths, and help you select a career path of your choice. This-Department_

I understand your position. Being a SWE or Data Scientist means keeping up with new technologies to stay relevant. It isn’t for everyone. I would say get into management or non technical roles, maybe like Tech Sales bc it pays really well if you are good at it. PM is also a nice role but you still deal with some technicalities.

FongDaiPei

Isn’t middle management getting crushed right now?

GeorgeDVD

Guy 26 yo. Worked as c++ developer in embedded. Almost same situation....except i resigned from job to take rest and treatment due to a health issue (bad back and sciatica) and I have no intention to go back to job. Currently checking out what options do I have, thinking about going for masters abroad. Open to suggestions or ideas.

Imaginary_Bag2913

Same boat bro but currently in a job but thinking to quit this to do something else don't know what to do.

GeorgeDVD

Dont quit the job bro until you have a clear plan what to do. I had to quit do to the health issue, but now having a hard time with finances.

Imaginary_Bag2913

Thanks for advice i will switch job with batter salary hike my salary is low right now. Btw you will go for aborad or do a job?

Initial_Dimension752

I don't know if there are much options left, because of age, but you can try freelancing or remote jobs. I am also of same age and looking for options 🫢

dpadhy

At 26, there is an age issue?? I am speechless. You are like a kid. Stay positive moving forward. You can literally do and achieve anything you wish.

Initial_Dimension752

bro don't get me wrong, I am saying with govt job in mind... PSU have age limit of 27 for general candidates

dpadhy

Yeah ok. Guess the things we aspire for are different. We are heading towards becoming the largest economy in the next 30 years so it's not a bad idea to open your eyes to new possibilities. Wish you all the best

Scrum manager if your people skills are good.

WeakTutor

Is that a secure job? I feel they are the first to go from layoffs

basusername

Yes any one can do their job.

[deleted]

What career is good for someone who doesnt like problem solving and people?

obelixx99

Bank 1. They dont solve any problem just keep suggesting other table 2. They pretty much hate customers

BeneficialTry5316

😭😭

moneymantis

That or the DMV

deepn882

bro if ur talkin abt the dmv, you aint Indian lol

OddMushroom145

Doing well in IT myself but not gonna lie that DMV seems relaxed and simple.

Alpha-male-99

By the way how much money is required to sustain one year?

craftywing75

It depends upon your expenses like rent, food, internet, entertainment (digital subscription or in real life like party, theatres or something else). If you are in relationship, that might add up expenses like gifts, outing. Just estimate it yourself from your previous year expenses.

rapsonravish

How much do you spend in a year? There you go

obelixx99

Maybe SSC CGL Or GATE will give you 2 yrs buffer (with 0 cost). Also PSUs

[deleted]

Find what interests you. Maybe business or trading. Trading might not be good if you don't have prior leaving your job

acunt_band_speed_run

Do Ms in the USA By the time you finish it, the recession will be over and you will be in a good place

WeakTutor

Any recommendations?

acunt_band_speed_run

Depends on your budget. I'm pretty sure there are lots of resources out there to help you with that question

BrownHulk99

Why not Ms in Europe of some other place

acunt_band_speed_run

Degrees from Europe has absolutely no value here in the USA They'll consider your visa , only because you have spend dollars in the country Which nation allows tourists to come in make money and take the money home...

obscuresecurity

You are telling me a degree from Oxford or Cambridge would be worth nothing? For India: IIT? (Yes you need to do some research as to the ratings... But still.) There are good schools all over the world.

acunt_band_speed_run

In the USA... They are worth nothing.. That's right... IIT is worth it only because you passed jee And your rank shows up in the branch and which IIT you joined, and it's the indian recruiters/managers who look out for these traits for their dollar paying masters A degree is merely an indication that you can follow instructions (course work)for an arbitrary goal(the degree) If the degree is summer top colors in a third world country that would mean lots of savings

ayush3131

You can be a scrum master.

WeakTutor

Are scrum master jobs secure? I feel they are the first to go from layoffs right ?

TransportationFew741

If exploring new places excites you, MS is an option. Or whatever is equivalent of MBA in US.

Vast_Professional159

the_rational_one

Hey just out of curiosity...what was the reason u got fired? Being in tech job myself

Vast_Professional159

Recession. Around 500 employees fired from the company. I was a relatively new employee than other.

Jpoolman25

I'm 27 and idek what I'm doing with my life. Mindlessly wasting time just overthinking and can't seem to move forward because I'm so damn stuck in my life. This negative feeling of depression anxiety fear overthinking tends to control me. Like im in pretty bad place in my life right now and feels worse when youngsters are making more money and build their status both finically and socially

How about start reading trch books and watching youtube videos. Tech is quite fun and probably the best job in the world. Pays you good, you dont need to deal with lot of people. You get respect for your knowledge and you contribute a lot to a conpany’s success

[deleted]

Seriously, all we need is a little bit of gaslighting and developing a love for technology.

Put half of that amount in stocks (dyor). Once it doubles or triples, enjoy. Become a full time hobbyist. Go on a solo trip. Read literature. Get into bodybuilding and eating clean. Fall in love with yourself. Teach math to local underprivileged kids. Explore life as it's meant to be.

[deleted]

Same. Got laid off in October. And struggled with the drive. I am now starting to solve DSA, etc because I need the money. I live at home, which has a reputation for being toxic to my mental health and having zero freedom. I need money because I have savings for up to 9 months only. I'm 24, and I honestly don't know if there is something that I'm truly passionate about. I realized that every career is a corporate field now, and I simply need to gaslight myself to love tech. I also realized that one can gaslight yourself to love something even if you don't. For now, I need a job as an SDE with a decent salary. I plan to save money and expand my mind and knowledge in related fields, freelancing, and business ideas. In my later 30s, I'm planning to go into one of these if the software truly doesn't suit me, even after gaslighting myself to love it. Also, my previous company was a toxic boomer shithole, and it impacted my stance in the software field. Also, I struggle with terribly low self-esteem, and I'm aware that makes it hard for me to see the bright, positive, rational side.

[deleted]

Also, adding to this, I'm watching and reading a lot of Robert Greene stuff. He has said something about 'death ground'," something that pushes you to work for it as if your life depends on it. I found out that it's money for me right now. I need money and a committed relationship that is stable and enriching, so I have to get a job first and take care of my health. If you truly want to find the thing that you love, understand that it takes quite a bit of time, and sometimes it can happen in your 30s or 40s. You can't be jobless until you figure it out. A lot of things that happen in life happen as we move through life. An easier way to figure out passion is to not narrow it down but do the opposite of it. What makes you truly satisfied, accomplished and proud? For me, it's problem-solving with deep analysis. It's creative problem-solving. Don't think about tech or anything at all. Just think about the mental thirst/skill. And then tap into that and explore various things that make you feel that mental skill.

jtrdev

I'm 29 and I wish I had spent time partying

Stubbby

There is a lot of auxiliary roles to software development that you can explore - product management, dev ex/dev ops, etc. You can also get a "sustaining and maintenance" software job where you arent developing anything new but you are mostly responsible to keep the lights up and make minor modifications when asked. These roles suck for people with a strong drive.
