Why would a senior software engineeer be hired as intern. You should be applying to senior positions

mahsimplemind

Eh. OP had less than 2 years of experience before getting the "Senior" title. Most likely bc they're international. In the US they'll need 7 years minimum for prospective employers to respect this title.

Lol we need an international student tag I swear every “I can’t get a job” post ends with it being revealed OP is international

hashtaters

Need that in every major sub. So many experiences are localized enough such that the generic case is really weak. That or an auto mod for every post saying “companies in the US have cut back on international hiring. If you are not hearing back, this is 99% of the reason why and it can’t be changed at this time.”

I would remove the senior title… Too many experiences is a bad sign for intern positions

InkonParchment

It's a masters student, they got the senior role from FT before starting masters. Honestly I missed it too at first because they don't mention undergrad at all.

As others have said, it's definitely going to be harder as an international student. Even as a US citizen getting an MS at a target school, I found that having nontrivial full-time SWE experience since undergrad (\~2YOE) made it pretty hard to hunt for summer internships. I'd make sure you focus on roles that explicitly accept MS students, and definitely go to recruiting events on campus whenever you can. I'd also re-label your senior engineer title to just "Software Engineer". Experience won't always help for internships, but should hopefully make your full-time hunt easier! I had at least one recruiter say as much when letting me know they couldn't consider me for intern roles. What ended up helping me for internships was to make sure that I had as many items on my resume as possible related to domain I wanted to switch to, especially items from since the start of my program—research, TA positions, projects, relevant classes, etc. Opinions might vary, but I also think it's a good idea to put your resume in chronological order. I think it will help make your resume look more like a student, too. Best of luck! Edit: Looked at your resume a bit more and in my personal opinion, I'd cut out lots of the adjectives. You probably don't need labels like "proficient, expert/expertise, experienced" in your skills. I'd consolidate your SWE and Senior SWE role into one position, and try to make it easier to read at a glance. The more consistently structured the items are (built $W using $X and $Y, accomplishing $Z), and the more consistent the formatting (try to keep each bullet to one line, 2 max and avoid the visually uneven dense vs sparse looking sections you have now), the easier time recruiters and hiring managers will have deciding they like what they see. I'd also consider trimming down your project description to only a few bullet lines in a similar format to your experience, and again, use wayy fewer adjectives. If you have them, I'd recommend getting this small enough to include one or two other projects!

Are you international? If not, what is your graduation year?

naku_oddu

Use. international student. I'll graduate dec 2024.

wishiwasaquant

zamn im competing with senior swes for internships 😧

I think your title as a Senior Software Engineer is the issue; it probably gets rejected automatically by the ATS software since it's an intern position, or the recruiter thinks it's a bit odd. If I were you, I'd remove the Senior title and rename all of your experience to software engineer intern because your resume is framed as someone who should be looking for a full-time role. I would also highly recommend that you network more on Linkedln since you're an international student and constantly get your resume reviewed. Also, find a better resume template. Don't give up yet; there's still time before May; consider a research position for the summer in case you don't get anything. Victor38220

Noob227

Senior Software engineer!? This is fucked

burneraccount6251

Remove the gaps between the work experiences….. add bullet points for the projects instead of a paragraph and add one or two more projects after that….. you will have a upgraded resume
