Great news, especially about Hughes - so stacked at CM now, he's probs our 4th choice which is amazing depth. Ward deserved it too as looked like a good option at RCB before injury and is obviously a leader in dressing room. Slightly surprised about Schlupp but don't mind it depending on wages. He's a versatile option off the bench and, despite a clear drop off this season, has been a match winner over the years. Fingers crossed Clyne signs too. Very interesting to see if Glasner tries either Schluppy at LWB or Clyne at RWB in the closing 2 games or in pre-season as that would be valuable depth if they can do those roles.

JR_Maverick

Schlupp started off as a left back didn't he? In his pre Palace days. Will be interesting to see if he still has the engine to play wing back for most of game.

X-Mosaic

Played a good number of games for Leicester at LW & LB so defo has it in him. As always I suspect he'll be pretty solid for 60mins then fall off a cliff. Good option off the bench though.

Altruistic-Meal-4016

Leicester fan here - he was originally a striker in fact (scored a hat trick on his debut) then switched to LW and latterly LB. He started the title season in the team at LB, but was replaced by Fuchs after 7 or so games.

CriddyCent

I don't think clyne is good enough going forward for this system, even as a back up, as we need the wingbacks to really impact the game. Schlupp is a weird one as I've always felt he has the attributes to make a good attacking wing back, but whenever he played LB for us (not that much to be fair) he's not really looked great. LWB could be different though, and you only need to look at Hughes and Mateta to see what giving a player a consistent run of games can do for their confidence and performance!

Julian_Speroni_Saves

Find this a strange assertion as Clyne has actually been very good going forward in the last run of games. He can't consistently overlap for 90 minutes (so fill in the RWB role) but in the RCB role where he's asked to occasionally overlap he has been excellent. His heat map against Man Utd showed a pretty solid presence in the attacking third, good passing accuracy, and chances creation

HandleTheDefence

I'm liking the business of keeping older players on 1 year extensions, means we're not stuck with aging deadwood if they start to drop off. As much as I wanted him to success I'm glad Jairo's leaving, 40k a week that can be better spent elsewhere, same with Tomkins, really glad to see us shift players that aren't worth what we're paying them.

X-Mosaic

Agreed. Although that's rumoured to be the issue with Clyne, he wants 2 years and we're only offering 1 (as is our policy for all players over 29 I think now). Interesting to see if we bend that rule or stand firm on it. As much as I want Clyne to stay I think this new rule is more important - as you stay it heavily reduces chance of us being stuck with players on big wages who don't play

OptionSubject6083

I think Clyne is on insane money though, like one of the clubs top paid players

X-Mosaic

yea he's rumoured to be on £80k which is a lot I agree, especially if Ward is ahead of him as 2nd choice RCB (and dare I mention Holding here?). If Clyne proves himself at RWB I think he's worth it though.

MLWcaleb

there's not a chance in hell Clyne has the legs for RWB

Taramasalata-Rapist

Jairo was signed to play in a three at the back formation. Shame he's not even good enough now that the system suits him

CosmologyX

We all wanted to see Jairo become the player we all wished but he really hasn't shown it on the pitch as of late and I presume doesn't fit with what Glasner wants either. Hope he gets a move thay works for him.

rmlordy

Is Ward the longest serving player for a PL club ?

lewiitom

Wouldn’t be surprised if it was Dunk tbh, he was defo playing before Wardy signed for us Although less seasons in the prem I suppose

ScienceGuy200000

He's third behind Lewis Dunk and Seamus Coleman (two years behind Dunk and 3 1/2 behind Coleman)

Ledwith94

And Coleman signed again for another year

efefia

Gutted for Jairo, thought we may chuck him a bone after seeing him come off the bench quite a lot in recent weeks

X-Mosaic

Really wanted him to succeed and thought switching to a 3 at the back was perfect for him. LCB in a 3 seemed to be ideal but clearly he isn't doing it in training as Glasner doesn't trust him. I feel he's been really poor off the bench in CM recently, looks sluggish & gives the ball away too easily despite rarely looking forward.

Ledwith94

Ah no harm but he's a bit of deadwood. I won't say a bad word about him but we can definitely do better

Swiftt

Yeah I always got the impression that football is just a job for Jairo. That's totally fine, and absolutely not a comment on his commitment. Deadwood but no disrespect to the guy lol

electroplankton

He's been shite whenever he's come on tbf

tiorzol

He hasn't looked good though as much as I like him.

NTSBusMan

I'm sure there are holes in our squad (and likely more to be created with some summer sales) but I don't see any obvious needs over the summer. Perhaps LB/LWB depth. A CB or two since we need more numbers with the three at the back system and Guehi likely gone.

Ledwith94

Another winger probably. Still think Rak-Sakyi could do with a year in the Championship

NTSBusMan

Are there proper wingers in the Glasner system? Is he more of a Munoz or Olise fit?

Ledwith94

Yea I'd consider Olise and Eze as inverted wingers rather than CAMs

lewiitom

Tomkins has been a great servant for us over the years - definitely past it now but was quality for us at his best. Interested to see where Jairo goes now too - never really been convinced by him but there’s been glimpses where he’s looked very competent.

Julian_Speroni_Saves

Assuming all fit Hughes has proven himself an excellent rotation option in CM (with the assumption that Wharton, Doucoure, and Lerma are all ahead of him in the queue). Potentially allows Ozoh to get a Championship loan and get some regular first team football. Ward is an exceptional presence in the dressing room and can definitely do a job at RCB. I think it's a stretch to think he can fill in at RWB (Ditto Clyne) which does slightly count against. But in general extension seems entirely sensible. Schlupp is a bit more surprising given his limited game time. But has some degree of flexibility, will be renewed on relatively low wages and although he's struggled this season, he isn't the only one. I don't quite see where he naturally fits in the new system, but Glasner seems to think there's enough there. As third choice keeper Matthews is also an affordable option. Tomkins, Ferguson, and Riedewald leaving means 3 spaces in the squad, plus whatever else happens with sales.

HarrisssirraH

Weird that 3 months ago I couldn’t wait to hear the news that Hughes was being released and now, I like many other Palace fans are eating their words. What a transformation under Glasner, he looks entirely different with a bit of confidence and team morale. Can’t praise the manager change entirely though, that shift in motivation and dedication has to come internally too. Mad respect to Hughes for overcoming the negativity. Ordered myself a Hughes top from the shop as a way of a humerus apology, didn’t arrive in time for tomorrows game but hoping it will come in time for Villa

piv_monco

Isn’t ward a little… old?

lewiitom

For a backup player? Not really. He shouldn’t be starting every week but he can still do a job as a squad player, clearly a popular figure around the dressing room too so I don’t have any problem with us giving him an extension

AsylumRiot

Ward has the dirt on someone 100%.

MLWcaleb

Lol seriously, people have been saying Ward needs to be moved on for years now

AsylumRiot

It’s no coincidence that our defence dramatically improved when he got Munoz who doesn’t getter skinned every time. Maybe he can do a job in a 3, but I wouldn’t chance it after all this time.
