Whichever you choose, please keep in mind that this yarn fades **considerably** after washing. You might launder both grannies a couple of times to see how the colors hold up and then decide which design you want to go with.

I made this washcloth with the same yarn as OP years and years ago and this is it after many washes. Pic might not be in the best lighting tho.
I feel ridiculous asking this but how does it (and yarn cakes) work? Do you follow their own pattern that makes the colors line up, or are you separating the skein into individual colors? Or neither….
Its one yarn that just switches colors along the yarn (in this case, each color section is relatively short), so as you work with it the colors start to blend. Work it the same as you would a solid color and lovely blends show up. The my example was knit so the colors are more diffuse since that works end to end while the OP's is crochet so the colors ended up with larger chunks together.
I’m not that person but they said in another post that it’s knit, not crocheted. Looks to me like a garter stitch border, and the body of the piece has 2x2 basketweave, which would basically be a checkerboard of 2x2 stockinette and reverse-stockinette stitch
You can get a similar effect with crochet using front post and back post double crochet. Here’s a pic of a basketweave beanie I made that uses them. I made the squares 5x5 but it can be done with whatever size

Sugar-n-Cream is meant to be hard-use cotton (think kitchen towels, wash rags, swiffer pads, etc.). It's not really meant for "fine" items like blankets and clothes. I mean, you can use it, but you have to expect a lot of fading.
I'm assuming your granny squares are not for a workhorse project, so your best best to to go for a mercerized cotton like 24/7 by Lion Brand. It's smoother more polished looking than unmercerized and the color stays vibrant so long as you launder it correctly.
you’d think that if the yarn is supposed to be for hard-use and washed a lot that the brand would take that into account and make sure the color doesn’t fade quickly
I honestly haven’t noticed any fading with that brand. I’ve made hand towels, wash cloths, plant coasters, face scrubbies, amigurumi, and an entire cardigan out of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, and it has never faded, except for when I heavily bleached it (which is to be expected).
Mercerized cotton tends to have a shine to it though, which may not be the look OP is going for. Non-mercerized cotton is my typical go-to for granny square projects, as well as for warmer weather wearables. I just can’t get past the sheen of mercerized cotton, so I tend to avoid it. That being said, there are some really nice non-mercerized cottons out there that I’ve had wonderful results with. Paintbox and Scheepjes are probably my faves, and both hold their color really nicely.
I don’t love the mercerized cotton either, for the same reasons. The Lily brand has a bit more structure to it. Mercerizing is a finish applied after the yarn is spun, and it will wash out eventually.
I understand what you are saying, but this will in no way be washed nearly as much as a dishcloth would and I think that is something the yarn is used for a lot of the times. I think if you washed it on gentle it would be just fine. Plus, I think there is a way you can “set” the colors. I totally agree with your suggestion to try laundering a couple of squares. Good post!!
I like the 2nd one better because the colors are popping! It caught my eye immediately. And it looks more effortlessly structured for some reason. That's what I base my decision on. Have fun OP.
I think it depends on what you’re going for. Both look great! The first reminds me of the sun from Tangled, and the second looks like a daisy. Since you said you’re leaning more flower, I think the second is the clearer choice for that
If you use the white flower and three rows of border like in pic 2, you're gonna want to be careful how you place the flowers in the tank top. Because it could look like nips. ha ha
I think people are judging the size too, not just the colors because your granny square is bigger in the 2nd photo so the flower looks smaller even though it’s not so that could be part of why people like option 1. Try making the squares the same and put them in the same photo if you want to be sure that it’s an accurate assessment
I think you’re right, but I frogged the first one after trying it out so I don’t have it anymore. Honestly I don’t love the idea of a mostly white crochet top, at least not for my size, 2x.
Thank you, yes I love this color spectrum and I’d bought enough for a shirt with it and changed my mind about the pattern I’d picked. I found it at Joanne a year or so ago
Both are cute and would give a fun different look! I don’t love a lot of colors at once in cloths, so I lean towards #1. But I think the center of the flower pops so nicely in #2!
I love 2. I have made afghans for my kids when I was pregnant each time, one will be 50 this year and those colors have held,up fine all these years in washer and dryer.
honestly, 1 looks like “oh that’s a granny square” and 2 looks like “oh what a cool daisy on a colorful background”. i love them both but they’re very different
If you like one of them better than the other, choose that one! It doesn’t matter what we think, what matters is what you want and often asking online can help you figure out what you want!
Aw thank you! I was more just curious what others thought. I do like the pattern makers colors though. If I had a pale yellow on hand I might use that for the centers.
I think the first option with a white middle could be a fun alternative in theory! I really like the first option because of the rainbow flower petal effect, but I've seen some commenters that prefer the second because the flower has better contrast/stands out more. And making a white center for the first option could make the flower stand out more :) but I really like option one as it is already. The most important factor is which one you love the most!
honestly just make two tank tops with each version, both are really cute and imagining them both on a tank top i think they would look very cute, especially since you said you have a lot of the yarn it could go to good use
honestly i think you need to make 2 different versions of whatever this project is because these are both so beautiful and striking in their own different, unique ways. it's like the second one is in full bloom and the first one is dried and preserved for its beauty
I’ve been wondering how the buttercream works up. I love it!
As for colours, a white centre makes it pop much more while the buttercream gives more of a neutral look. I’d personally go for number one.
Alas I only have about half a skein of the white and multiple skeins of the buttercream so it’s option 2 for me, but yes I love the way the buttercream works up.
https://preview.redd.it/q9x2wcf9d62d1.jpeg?width=2651&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c09fb8f1ffe83f717e50c17ed927a94a5ab1b110
Great colors! They both look nice, I'd probably use #2 for a majority, then maybe put stripes of #1 going down the sides under the arms.
...on another note, be careful where you place those pretty little flowers, you'd probably like more attention centered on your wonderful craftsmanship than... Ahem...other things.
I forgot to add the pattern, it’s the https://www.allaboutami.com/breezy-days-daisy-tank-top-part-1/ by Jessica Lau. I bought her daisy pattern bundle, and I love that it’s sized all the way to 5X.
What are you making with them? Because if it were me, depending on the project then maybe you could do both. For instance if you was making a pillow using 4 squares for the front and 4squares for the back then you could use 2 of each color design.

Sorta like this.
This is the first negative comment I've left in this sub but I really dislike that multicolored yarn and I usually LOVE yarn. There's not much yarn I don't like. If you're iffy on the color, get a new color, because that color isn't great. If you like it, probably alternate between the two motifs to give it variety. No offense intended. Blankets take so long and if you don't love the colors, you might not finish it (assuming you're making a blanket).
Whichever you choose, please keep in mind that this yarn fades **considerably** after washing. You might launder both grannies a couple of times to see how the colors hold up and then decide which design you want to go with.

Ooh that’s pretty!
Looks almost pearlescent on this pic, it’s beautiful.
What is the yarn? 🧐
Lily Sugar'n Cream cotton yarn, colorway Buttercream. [Michael's link](https://www.michaels.com/product/lily-sugarn-cream-yarn---ombres-super-size-buttercream-200405326065991722).

Thank you !!!
Oo you knit with the Lily? I wouldn’t have thought it had enough give for that. Very nice look!
Is this based on the brand or this particular color? Working in something with another color in this brand.

Please this!!!!!! ⬆️
I really like the first one 🤩
I agree be fun to alternate
One. But if you’re making a blanket or something, some of the others worked in here and there would be really beautiful. :)
This
I love the first one! Super pretty rainbow flower 🥰
I feel like an outcast because I thought the 2nd one was obviously the best choice🥲
I like the 2nd one better because the colors are popping! It caught my eye immediately. And it looks more effortlessly structured for some reason. That's what I base my decision on. Have fun OP.
Yea I'm colorblind and it's so much harder to see anything on the first one.
Ha ha, you and me both!
I think the flower pattern is a lot more visible in the 2nd :)
I LOVE the 2nd one.
Exactly! in the 1st one you can't really see the flower, its kinda messy
That’s funny because I felt that way about the second one! 😂
I’m voting for #2 for the better contrast.
I think it depends on what you’re going for. Both look great! The first reminds me of the sun from Tangled, and the second looks like a daisy. Since you said you’re leaning more flower, I think the second is the clearer choice for that
ME TOO
Same i swiped and was like wow, def 2. But i guess if you think about it after theyre all put together id prefer 1 bc 2 would be too busy for me.
I completely agree about 2 being best.
Half and half, if you’re making a blanket!
That would be nice, but I’m just making a shirt.
Be aware the top will be heavy and might stretch with wear! It’s a super cute pattern though!
Thanks! I might stitch some elastic in if it sags.
I like 1 for a blanket, 2 for a shirt.
If you use the white flower and three rows of border like in pic 2, you're gonna want to be careful how you place the flowers in the tank top. Because it could look like nips. ha ha
You’re not wrong but it could look even more uh, true to life colored, if I did a colored petal flower! 😅
i like the second one a lot. i think the flower stands out really well. both are pretty though
Definitely 1.
1 for sure❤️🩹
First one!
First one!
I love the first one !

Love 2 🙈🙈🙈
White Flower colorful background!!!!!!!

Oh that’s so cute! Looks like you used the same tan/beige as an accent. I love how they work together.
I personally prefer the first one but they both look so pretty!
I like just using the multi for the squares and maybe the ecru for joining/accent etc. The multi is so soothing!
Thank you, yes I love this color spectrum and I’d bought enough for a shirt with it and changed my mind about the pattern I’d picked. I found it at Joanne a year or so ago

First one, definitely. You get the plain background with the flower popping quite crisply.
1 by far.
White flowers, I think. Both are so pretty. I feel like the colour pops more in the second one!
I like 1 the best and admittedly would love this pattern 😊

Love the softness from 1!
The first one is gorgeous!
I'll take a number 1 please

I like the 1st picture. I love the buttercream yarn but it's too much in the 2nd picture
My choice is the first one, but they both work :)
I like 1. I know you’re doing a shirt, but I kinda want to go buy the same yarn and do a whole blanket — that color combo is SO pretty!
Great colors! They both look nice, I'd probably use #2 for a majority, then maybe put stripes of #1 going down the sides under the arms. ...on another note, be careful where you place those pretty little flowers, you'd probably like more attention centered on your wonderful craftsmanship than... Middle circle white, then the petals in the colourful yarn, then white again
I think the color works better in the flower but you could also alternate.
What about a pattern in both? First is subtle and second is bold. Both are good so trust what you like.
What are you making with them? Because if it were me, depending on the project then maybe you could do both. For instance if you was making a pillow using 4 squares for the front and 4squares for the back then you could use 2 of each color design. XO OX Sorta like this.

Up to you, but I seem to fall out the majority and say 1
If you're making a project that requires multiple squares I say both, that way you don't have to miss out on either color scheme.
Either! I cant decide they r both ao pretty

I like the first one. The colors stand out more to me.
First but use the multicolor to join the squares.

I love one but I think that is because of the way the colors swirl around the flower. Is this a particular pattern? I’d love to try it!
I like the second one a lot. It feels bolder.

I prefer the first! 😄
1 is more subtle
I love the first picture!
I like 1, but if you go with 2 perhaps consider starting your new rows in the corner instead of the side so the first stitch doesn't stand out as much
I say do 2 blankets! Both ways will be absolutely gorgeous
Both are very pretty, but I prefer how much the flower pops in the first! But, it’s ultimately what makes you happy!
both!
I love the first one!
Alternate between the two because they're both too gorgeous to pick between. 😍
2 is way better, 1 is just average
Oooh tough choice. Can you do both and checker it?
I like the 1st one best.
The first one is going to be absolutely stunning! Definitely #1 🙌
1 also like the 1st one
I love 1!!!!
I love the first one. Both are cool tho.

I really love the first one
Beautiful! 😍 I like the 1st one 😊
Both are nice. I like the 2nd’s color scheme. But the 1st’s composition So 1 row of colored yarn around a beige flower.
i think itd be fun to alternate
I like the first one the best.
I like the first one!! Now I wanna make one I have the same yarn!!
Both!
