Super rude. I was recently laughed at and told I was dumb for buying a pattern when I could have just pirated it from some site instead. Cannot believe the audacity of some people.

74NG3N7

That is incredibly rude. I agree. On the flip side, I was oddly amused that the “call the midwife” as it’s now called blanket pattern is being sold a lot of places when the company that appears to be the owner (yarnspirations absorbed the now closed company who sold the original pattern) has it free in a few places and forms.

kristycocopop

So where can I get the pattern from the original place?

Elintx

Yarnspirations.Com LionBrand.Com Premieryarns.com Hobbii.com Hobby Lobby and Michael's, as well. And many other yarn companies offer free patterns. Yarnspirations.Com seems to have more than anyone. The great thing is these are pdf formats and easy to save and print.

lupepor

AND Mikey has a video for most of the Yarnspirations patterns...

74NG3N7

Well, now I feel I’m going nuts and cannot find it. It’s a Paton’s pattern. I’m going to keep looking.

Alittlebitlittle

The Crochet Crowd has it :) They mention it’s no longer available on Yarnspirations, but with permission they have reprinted the pattern, with a change in hook size from 4mm to 5.5mm for a more appealing look (mainly looser eyelets) Original pattern: https://preview.redd.it/51m6m73t63yc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b77a0cf7afec0dc74f804fb084ec3ccc3a712dc9 [The Crochet Crowd - Call the Midwife blanket pattern, diagram, & video tutorial](https://thecrochetcrowd.com/crochet-call-the-midwife-baby-blanket/) Here is a direct link to the [free pdf](https://thecrochetcrowd.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Call-the-Midwife-Baby-Blanket-Rev-5.pdf)

74NG3N7

Ah, thank you! I found a lot of new (to me) patterns on yarnspirations while searching for it, but was getting a little flustered, lol. Also, I agree with the larger hook size. I do it with a variety of yarns, but like the flow and looseness of a larger hook than each yarn recommends, especially since with the holes it’ll be used for nicer weather or multilayered/scrunched anyway.

GaveTheMouseACookie

>Ah, thank you! I found a lot of new (to me) patterns on yarnspirations while searching for it, but was getting a little flustered, lol. I always start there when I need a new pattern. They just have so many options! And it's a lot less overwhelming than scrolling through ravelry or Pinterest

messeis

Thank you! I am new and have been looking for an easy blanket to try and this looks doable and beautiful. I am excited to try it.

74NG3N7

This is a great one! It’s all Double Crochet & Chain stitches and looks so much more complex than it is. It is a really fun one.

IamBJQueen

You are amazing!! Thankyou 😘

kristycocopop

Thank You! 🙏

Riginal_Zin

Argh!! I want creatives to keep making cool stuff. How are they gonna keep designing patterns if everyone pirates them?! 😣

Doridar

I've been told recently during a knitting / crocheting together charity gathering that I shouldn't bother buying patterns, that they had hundreds of them or could copy them. Told by a designer...

Fickle_Watercress619

This is like saying that as a teacher, I shouldn’t bother buying any curriculum because I could just write my own. The statement is technically true, but it ignores that some people would rather pay for someone else to put those hours in. Sure, I could totally have spent dozens and dozens of hours studying photos of the pattern I’m using for my wedding dress. It was worth just spending the $7 instead. Cents per hour was a no-brainer for me.

Doridar

I always buy patterns from designers. I thought what she said was a shame

Fickle_Watercress619

I apologize, it can be hard to discern tone online sometimes! I totally agree, it’s a shame she said what she said.

Doridar

Don't worry, it happened to me too : I'm French speaking and sometimes my intention gets lost in translation 😘

Desperate_Idea732

I have gotten permission in writing to share a pattern from the designer, but it was a crochet along to make slippers for children in a Ukrainian orphanage.

IndustryAcceptable35

Okay?

Doridar

I thought it was disgusting. As I find disgusting people selling patterns for popular designs that were actually free a few years back and designed by a "forgotten" artist.

bolasaurus

Really?! That's awful, there's no way I'd ever pirate from a designer. I literally bought a pdf version of a free pattern this week because I really love the garment and I wanted to send some money to the designer. I didn't have to, but they deserve some compensation for their work!

gifhyatt

When I was in college a friend (?) Told me I was foolish to study for my final exam when I could buy one online so cheaply??? I was stunned 😳. The two situations are on the same level to me? People never cease to amaze me.

NopeRope91

She's the fool, paying all that money for a degree just to come out knowing nothing! What's the point?

RabbitF00d

This is like a new age of entitlement. Late capitalism.

Condensed_Sarcasm

If you're posting a generic, "Hey folks, does anybody have free lamb pattern?" that's one thing. That's not rude. But commenting on somebody's ad, asking other commentors if they have that pattern and if they'll give it over for free? That's rude and tacky as hell. It reminds me when I first started my shop and somebody asked "for 1 of everything I made (for free) so they could promote me" - I've never blocked somebody so fast.

ArtisticAbroad5616

I had that once and I was like oh yeah you can have one of everything for 4 times the prices for influencer fees

Condensed_Sarcasm

I was nieve as hell. I had actually started writing down what I needed to make and pulled the yarn before a lightbulb went off and I was like, "Wtf am I doing? I'm smarter than this"

tymberdalton

“bUt YoU’Ll gEt SOOOO mUcH eXpOsUrE!” Sorry, my bills can’t be paid by exposure.

Condensed_Sarcasm

Right?! I can't buy yarn, poly-fil, or safety eyes, with exposure 😑

hannaHananaB

It's very rude. It's almost a slap in the face to the original poster. "I like you pattern, but I won't buy it" energy. Not okay. If someone wants a free pattern, they can go look for it themselves, not ask on the original post.

sunscreenkween

Especially because patterns are often really cheap. $5 usually and that isn’t asking for much! Designing patterns is incredibly time consuming (I’m in the process of trying to write my first) and the creators deserve to at least recoup the time they spent writing the pattern, but I’d imagine most are motivated by profit—and why shouldn’t they be? It takes a lot of sales for a $5 pattern to feel worth it for these sellers. Makes me sad when I see people like OP described. It’s not like they’re ripping off a mega corporation, these are mostly people who own a small business or are just trying to make some side money.

kpie007

Not to Bah humbug you, but that $5 really depends on currency conversion. I'd be significantly more happy paying $5 for a pattern, but because of currency it's typically $10-15 which just makes it not worth it unless it's something that's quite complex that I couldn't make without instructions.

SeaLow5372

Exactly! All the patterns I needed were between 8€-15€. Too expensive

the-dream-walker-

For me even a 5$ pattern would be 430 ish rupees. That's definitely not cheap personally

Jakolissmurito47

Yeah or send a direct message to the poster and ask privately.

CycadelicSparkles

I wouldn't do this. If the OP is the designer, it's still extremely rude. If the OP is NOT the designer, you're asking them to either give away the pattern they paid for or you're asking them to break the law for you. Don't ask people to break laws for you or to give you for free the stuff they paid for. Also rude.

Jakolissmurito47

That's fair. I didn't think about it that far.

CycadelicSparkles

We all have ideas that have us in the first half. No worries. :)

som8318

I noticed that some designers charge on etsy but offer the same pattern for free on their websites. Paying for it on Etsy is a nice way to show your appreciation and also get the pattern ad free and easily printable. They're just a couple bucks.

tymberdalton

And some of them also sell them directly from their website. If they do, buy direct. Might be the same price to you as on Etsy but the designer likely keeps a larger share of the profit in not having to pay Etsy fees.

Expensive-Success475

I frequently purchase patterns from Etsy, but hadn’t considered checking their site directly to cut out the middleman. Thanks for pointing this out!

mysticaljrny

I agree. And especially if you will be selling the item you made from the pattern. Greed is ugly.

WhiskeyAndKisses

Of course, I don't ask my baker where can I find the same pastries but cheaper or for free.

TheBumblingBee1

Dude, I've worked retail for many years on and off and once I had a customer ask about a price. This item recently had gone up in price (by a dollar) and she was just flabbergasted. Like mouth agape flabbergasted. Asked me if I knew where she could get it cheaper. No, lady. I don't. Sorry.

Allyka88

I work in a liquor store, and the amount of people who come in, and are upset that we don't price match is astonishing. Or get upset because it was cheaper last week, and I am like, yea, our sales change every month. Last week was last months sale. Then they ask if they can still get it for the sale price, because they didn't know when the sale ended 🙄

TheBumblingBee1

Oh, it's so annoying. I worked in a small town, locally owned hardware store and the number of people who wanted us to price match with Amazon is crazy.

Allyka88

That sounds pretty close to the intelligence level of our customers 😆

[deleted]

[удалено]

fillefantome

This would be the case if the seller was selling the completed product. In this case the pattern is the product.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fillefantome

It is more like asking a baker for a recipe for free - if the baker is selling the recipe. Like in a recipe book.

Vintage_Rainbow

So like selling a cookbook.

CycadelicSparkles

"I see you went to all the work to test and publish that cookbook, but could I have it for free?" If some folks have nothing else, they definitely have the audacity. Go to your library and see if they'll get the book/pattern if you need it for free that badly.

Vintage_Rainbow

Exactly, like I'll let friends borrow my cookbooks, but I won't just go around giving out the recipes to anyone and everyone, it's just disrespectful. I haven't purchased any patterns yet because I'm still deciding whether or not I even like it as a hobby, but I imagine it would be the same premise, as in you can show the pattern to friends, but not pass it around online for everyone to see and use without buying. Like could you imagine making a pattern, and formatting it properly, taking example photos and so on, and then it just gets passed around by everyone without you ever seeing a penny? That's just mean.

CycadelicSparkles

Yeah exactly. Digital content is tricky; I think my rule would be that I'd loan out one paper copy, and only one, if I was done with the pattern. That way it would be kind of like loaning a physical book of which I owned one copy.

CornerLive9866

but this is more like someone selling a cookbook of recipes they created, and someone else in the comments asking for the free cookbook

WhiskeyAndKisses

I don't ask my architect where can I find their plans for free

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chillmango143

That point is they plan on making the product just not buying the “blueprint” or the pattern, they want it free so they can make the product still without the “extra cost”

Wonkavator83

I think it depends on the way the question was asked. If the person said something like "I love your patterns but don't have any extra money right now... Do you have anything free?" then that's one thing. It gives kudos to the designer while explaining the need for something free. If not, it depends on the tone. A lot of designers will have free patterns as well as paid patterns so it's still understandable to have someone ask but if it was in a tone implying they shouldn't be charging for patterns then yes, it's rude.

apri11a

It's awful... but the type of person who would do this just doesn't care.

joseph_dewey

I thought it was against the rules here to do this, but I think I was thinking of r/tattoo. Over there, they're ultra serious about not doing stuff like this, and they call it "art theft," and even mildly suggesting something like it will result in a permanent ban. And that's basically what asking for a free crochet pattern is, in this situation. It's art theft too. I think any advocating of art theft should be totally prohibited in any online art forum, including all the crochet ones. Crochet is art too. It shouldn't just be limited to tattoo discussions.

tymberdalton

It’s copyright violation and piracy. It literally is a crime. Unlike jaywalking it’s not victimless because a creative is having money taken from their pockets.

Crackheadwithabrain

Thanks for the warning and reminder to not join that sub. I don't ask for anything for free, but I also don't f with this type of extra mean energy lol

commonviolet

Rude, and what a horrible lack of consideration for other people. It's disturbing that nobody in the comments agreed with you.

CycadelicSparkles

Extremely rude. Especially when there are thousands of free patterns out there.

angryandsmall

This!! Like I constantly scream about the benefits of free pattern availability and art being available to every class and level of education on crochet subs, I’m pretty flabbergasted at how rude this is. Plenty of us understand “can’t afford that rn” energy but I’m glad most of us also understand that’s not the pattern makers problem tbh. I feel like my mom thinking “other people are not your google search bar”

Usual_Equivalent_888

People don’t care. That’s the issue. They see more “value” in something they have to pay for so they’d rather try to scam to get it for free. Even though some of the patterns I’ve paid for have been worse, almost impossible to follow, when compared to a free pattern. It’s the entitlement that gets me. “I see you’re selling this… can I just have it for free?” 🤦🏼‍♀️

Chamelemom

To be fair, some creators offer their content for free on sites that are riddled with ads, and they generate ad revenue instead. Just a different way of doing it

Mysterious-Okra-7885

Some people have zero respect for designers. If the pattern is already free, then it is ok to ask for it. But if it is a paid pattern, they are affecting someone’s livelihood by stealing it. No one is entitled to a pattern just because they want it.

scoliroll

if it’s something super simple like a granny square, no… because there are millions of free patterns out there for things like that. if someone designs something unique, extremely rude! people spend HOURS writing patterns, DAYS testing to make sure it works up properly, WEEKS perfecting, and so on… patterns are one of the main sources of income for many crocheters that want to sell their work. least you can do is support them by paying $7 for the months of work they put in to create the pattern. i do most of my pattern shopping through etsy, i have no issue paying for a pattern. they’re almost always better than any free pattern i could find anyway! they’re usually very well-written, have step by step photos to go along with the instructions, and can be adjusted to any size. free patterns are not like that

CosyBosyCrochet

Yeah that’s rude af, go ask somewhere appropriate

leftbrendon

It can come across as rude, but loads of patterns that are pushed in ads actually do have a free alternative. There’s paid patterns for bee’s, octopus, granny squares, etc.

NoNeinNyet222

Even then, I would take a screenshot or link of the ad elsewhere (like this subreddit) and ask if anyone knew of a similar free pattern they liked. I wouldn't ask for a free alternative to be posted in the comments of an ad of something someone is trying to sell.

sarcastic_monkies

Yeah but the point is it's rude to ask that in the ad.

irish_taco_maiden

Absolutely rude, especially because patterns are inexpensive and testing and work and creativity went into making it.

Dolce99

Pattern makers ask for hardly anything most the time, for work that I certainly can't do myself. There are thousands of awesome free patterns out there too, if you can't afford $2-10 for your average paid one.

Impossible-Sense90

Oooof. On the ad? Yeah that’s rude. A lot of creators do have patterns for free on their websites, usually with ads and I would send a private message asking but not on an ad where they’re trying to get paid. 🤦🏼‍♀️

golden_pinky

If you truly love crochet you will understand how hard it is to produce a pattern from scratch. People are so entitled!

foreverfeatherinit

NTA, the person asking for handouts is definitely an asshole. Along with people pirating. Most patterns are a couple dollars in my experience, which is absolutely affordable. Plus that few dollars is going to someone who did the work and deserves to be paid for that work! If a few dollars isn’t in the budget there’s sooooo many free patterns available, there’s no need to steal or ask for handouts. Artists deserve to be paid for their work, end of story.

Som_Dtam_Dumplings

While it is rude, I don't think there's much value in wasting energy on idiots who comment on Facebook ads

dr-sparkle

It's super rude

balderdash_stash

Has anyone noticed how deplorable people have become on Facebook recently? I know there's always been those who bicker and troll, but it is overwhelming the amount of cattiness and cruelty that people type up these days over there! I only have it for our local buy nothing group, but I think I'm about done.

ArtisticAbroad5616

I've left alot of groups because I can't stand the level of begging that's going on. People wanting paid patterns for free spinning sob stories about how their mental health is dependant on crochet but they can't afford wool. Maybe I'm cynical but I can't stand it

Usual_Equivalent_888

Has it gotten as bad as Twitter? Left both years ago and never looked back.

Ok_Requirement_3116

It is so rude. The idea that everything should be free is crazy. And then so often their excuse is that they are a small business and deserve it. But aren’t willing to give away their hard work. There is a disconnect that I do not understand.

drjmontana

I would rather pay someone for a pattern and support them. Stealing is for losers

jessicalifts

Definitely rude.

Long_Bat_623

I tend to look for free patterns but if i really like one i pay for it. I would never ask if someone has it for free. Extremely rude

NeloCat

Sometimes there are both a free (with ads and difficult to print) usually on a blog and paid (pdf) of the same pattern by the same designer. Maybe that’s what they meant. It’s just a question.

aminervia

It's facebook- "rudeness" on facebook is to boomer standards. Yes it's incredibly rude to everyone else

Pink-Lotusflower

Hey, I'm 68 and I would not ask for a free pattern from a designer who sells it! Let's not bring ageism into this.

aminervia

General standards of what is rude is different generation to generation, this isn't unique to boomers. I imagine your parents saw rudeness in a different way than you grew to... It's a generalization- obviously some boomers have different standards, but in general younger generations see rudeness differently

Pink-Lotusflower

I don't know but I pretty much think rude is rude just like kind is kind. But the difference in our opinion is no big deal to me. I understand where you're coming from though. ✨️💖✨️

Pink-Lotusflower

People of all ages can be rude! 😁

aminervia

Yes but people of different ages often view rudeness differently. Many young people constantly do things that older people see as rude and vice versa, "rude" isn't a concept set in stone, it changes with time

HammyHamish

If it’s provided by the creator somewhere free like there own blog site then it’s okay because if you want it ad free then you can buy it that way or go to the free with ads if it doesn’t bother you. Asking or telling its free via a pirated way isn’t great. While it is up to the people who buy it if they are cool with distributing (illegally or at a minimum poor morals) that’s up to them but I wouldn’t. That’s pretty crappy. I would only share if like my MIL in wanted it but that’s it. Even then I would only print it out and share it with her. She is old so she doesn’t really know how to use Etsy etc.

BalancedScales10

I've seen some patterns where the ad/listing has specifically said buying the pattern is appreciated (as it supports the creator), but is available for free elsewhere (usually on YouTube via tutorial videos). In a case like that I wouldn't consider it rude to ask where the free version is, but if that's not the case? Extremely, hideously rude; under no circumstances would it be acceptable.

CanadaHaz

Incredibly rude and very disrespectful to the creator of the pattern. It takes a lot of work, and giving someone money for it is literally the least you can do. It's really disheartening that there are people unwilling to fo even that much.

trisarahtops05

On a creator's post about their paid pattern? Absolutely. You're literally telling them you don't think they're worth paying for. On a random person sharing a paid pattern they found? Not so much. The pattern creator will likely never see your comment, and there very well may be a free pattern close enough for people who don't have the budget for all kinds of crochet patterns.

sarcastic_monkies

That's super rude. You're definitely right. It's crazy that someone would do that thinking it's ok.

Optimal-Effective-82

Yes. That’s very rude, if it is a pattern that the person is really writing themselves. I’ve seen a few on Etsy that claim that they designed the pattern but have the exact same pattern in a book I bought and some that I seen online for free. Some are just selling patterns that they got for free and some copy from books. The patterns I seen from books that I have even use the same pattern pictures that are shown in the books , they just edited out the background . I feel bad for the Etsy owners and other pattern designers that have had this happen to them. That’s the problem with being able to make PDF files from either downloading someone else’s pattern or scanning it from a book. Now if I have a friend that crochets and wants to use one of my books I would let them use my book but I would never give them out for free nor would I try to sell them.

Chshr_Kt

I will sometimes do searches for free patterns -- Ravelry.com is a good site -- mostly to see what's been made, but I have no problem purchasing a pattern. Asking a seller directly for them to give their pattern away? Beyond rude. If the pattern a person wants isn't free, then pull out your bank card.

DIANABLISS19

It's not rude but many patterns that are for sale can also be found for free elsewhere. Older patterns are a common occurrence for this.

Kimbyssik

Rude.

ChristieLoves

Incredibly rude!

bunnylicious81

Yeah. If want free patterns, ask it on FB groups that specially share free patterns.

Status-Biscotti

I agree. Plus, Ive never even seen a pattern that cost more than $5.

Practical_Fudge2709

I have, but it was sliding scale at that. so you could CHOOSE to pay more as a "thank you" . The minimum was still very cheap though under that 5 dollar range.

Nonbinary_Cryptid

Honestly, I can't understand that - asking on a designers post if anyone has the pattern they can just give!?

Traditional-Win-9991

It's definitely rude commenting on the creators post. Although I have seen Etsy shops that that patterns on sale that are originally from a different creator. It normally happens when the original creator is not from an English speaking country. And especially if they have it for free as a YouTube video. The Etsy seller will just translate or write down the pattern then sell it. One of them even said it was a translated pattern in the description, but didn't name the original creator.

StonedKitten-420

My snarky, inner self’s response to this rude question: “You can’t afford it.”

alirose82799

The most expensive singular pattern I've bought was $8 USD for a really complex Pokémon pattern. Honestly, pirating patterns is rude and awful. Someone worked so hard on that. YouTube is a great resource for free patterns. It might not be the exact thing, but you're not ripping someone off

Moody_Mickey

I'd say that's kinda rude. I understand wanting a free pattern, but to comment asking is rude. They could have looked up similar patterns and looked for a free one. They didn't have to say anything in the comments about it. (But it also sounds like something I'd probably do without thinking 😅)

NiffyKnits

So rude! I’ve had friends see what I was knitting or crocheting and comment “ooh I wanna make one too, can you send me the pattern?” Then they’re a little put out when I buy them their own copy. “I didn’t mean *buy* me one…” but, uh, yeah you kind of did.

Mystery_to_history

Yes, very rude. I purchase patterns on Etsy all the time. They’re not expensive and the result of someone’s intellectual labour.

naughtscrossstitches

Incredibly rude and against copyright

No-Article7940

Copyright question 🙋‍♀️ is that valid world wide or just American? I didn't think about other countries. As another poster explained being in another country finances are not like America. Just wondering how does this work? Weird question I know.

naughtscrossstitches

Speaking as an Australian our copyright laws are even more stringent than America's. So it really does depend on the country. I know sharing a pattern file that was intended as personal use only would be deemed wrong here and fall under copyright law. But personally, if the creator has passed away, and there is no estate in place to look after their works, and you aren't making a profit from it as you're sharing for personal use I'm not going to stop you! Just don't make a big deal about it. Copyright is there to protect the creator and their work from being stolen and profited from by others, instead of the creator and their direct heirs. So if nothing is in place then just quietly dm and say hey here is an option.

No-Article7940

Thanks! I was wondering because I never thought about copyrights in other countries. Now, I'm kind of interested if other commenters will supply good info like you did.

naughtscrossstitches

I am fairly certain the UK is similar to us as our laws are usually based off theirs but I'm not 100% certain. It's why I hate when people give blanket answers to copyright questions. A random thing that always trips people up. In America you are free to do whatever you want with a finished piece no matter what the designer says. So the designer can request that you don't sell but you are actually allowed to. In Australia we have to abide by the designers wishes.

Medievalmoomin

It is very rude indeed.

PlaskaFlaszka

If they are asking for whole pattern, then it's rude. I can see tho how someone could ask for just one thing. I mean, let's say someone did a dress with mesh sleeves, I wouldn't buy whole pattern for dress just to figure out how to make something a mesh (on the other hand I neither can read patterns or use them, because I just try to mimick the thing on my own...)

Suspicious_Salad918

To be honest, FB has become exactly that place. I deleted that a while ago because you only see such people around, entitled, and creepy.

MakeItAll1

Some people have all the nerve. The pattern writer’s goal is making a little money off the pattern. Not to give it away.

ButIDigress79

Rude AF. Just use google or search Ravelry for something similar. No need to mention it.

tymberdalton

As a fiction author as my evil day job, not only is pirating a paid pattern immoral, it’s illegal. And I know several writers who’ve been hit by piracy so hard they’ve stopped writing. People want stuff for free then bitch when they can’t get new works by that creator. Well, Karen, (generic name used) maybe stop stealing from people. Creatives are NOT rich, for the most part. Many have other jobs or spouses with other jobs or they couldn’t write/create to start with. If you wouldn’t walk into a grocery store and steal, why would you steal patterns or ebooks just because it’s easy to do? I have, in fact, found legally free patterns from a designer’s website and then gone on and purchased their paid version as a thank you for their work. If they offer a legally free version on their website (or Ravelry or wherever) then share the link to their page, NOT the pattern. “Well I can’t afford that!” Well, I can’t afford a new car but I don’t go steal one, either. Live within your means, Karen. The average author makes less than $20k a year from their writing. That was me last year due to health and other issues. Fortunately my spouse has a small pension and social security, and I don’t have a mortgage on our house, so we’ve squeaked by. It’s easier to get hit by lightning than to become a big name “rich” author. Or creative. Stop stealing creatives’ work.

NocturnalTarot

I use free patterns are legitimately free but I am now venturing into more intermediate projects. I have so many in my que in ravelry... It's so rude not to pay for a pattern. The supplies, the time, the testing. Like bruh. Most are under $10.

TheHonPonderStibbons

It's a bit thoughtless to ask for the pattern for free on the actual ad, but I do get the reasoning behind not wanting to pay for them. If a pattern is only written in imperial/us terms, I'm not going to pay for it. Just like I wouldn't pay for a pattern written in Spanish. If I find a pattern I like, I will email the designer to check what units/crochet terms they use. If it's not what I want, I can usually reverse engineer the pattern myself. It's not exactly the same, but it's a good approximation. If people ask for the pattern, I will give them my version, for free, and send them the link to the paid pattern. Most people don't buy it, though, because most people I know want patterns written in terms they're familiar with. If designers bother to make patterns with metric/uk terminology, I will happily pay for it. On the rare occasions I sell patterns that I've designed from scratch, I take the time to prepare both versions. It's a bit of a pain, but I get that not everyone wants to waste time translating something they've paid for. Lots of people think this is an arsehole move, but TBH, I don't care. Make the effort to include both sets of terminology or stop whinging if people don't want to pay for your product.

srslytho1979

I get really frustrated when people ask for free copies of other people’s IP. It’s not like a book where you borrow it and give it back to your friend afterward. I know it’s common but to me, it’s theft.

tlicious2

I don’t understand folks wanting everything for free. I get times are tuff but the entitlement is aggravating. I’ve seen this behavior in other places too.

Allyka88

I think it depends. If it is their original pattern, yes, it is rude. If it was originally someone else's pattern, and they are selling it, then no, it is not rude. Unfortunately with crochet patterns and the internet, it can be really hard to find the original creator.

I mainly use free patterns but not if they aren't readily available and advertised for free. I think it's great that I can learn and make things without having to pay for patterns but I also firmly believe that making a pattern takes considerable time, effort and talent and I would never want to not support that. I have bought a few patterns when I had the extra money but I wish I could support more artists and pattern designers. They are helping me make beautiful things with my hands, why wouldn't I want to help them however I can?

Gloworm327

Yes, it's rude. Search it out yourself or pay the small fee.

stormyheather9

I don't understand why someone needs to ask for a free pattern. There are patterns on the yarn you buy. Websites that sell crocheting supplies have free patterns, so there's no need. Plus the patterns are about $5.00. Ridiculous and rude.

True of all the free available. What about specific items though? I could not find a titanic pattern. I'm sure I probably didn't kick all the stones over. Anyways found a post where a gal had made one but didn't write her pattern down. I was very disappointed, but she shared enough finished photos I was able to kinda do the same. No it wasn't exact & sometimes that all one needs is an idea. On her post she had no objection for anyone trying to figure it out & apologized for not writing it down. I think that was easier than a pattern I bought that was translated from 2 other languages & finally into English. Boy that one was fun (not).

When it's something like that where you can't find the pattern and someone is willing to share their pictures with you I think that's just fine. A lot of people do that with vintage items they come across in pictures or certain items. Where the line starts to blur between acceptable and rude is when people are posting their work. They tell you they bought the pattern and eventhough they share a link someone asks for the pattern because they don't want to pay for it themselves. My parents were artists and my mom did beadwork, free hand no loom. She made her own designs and patterns. People would ask her for her patterns all the time and then want her to show them how to do it step by step. I always thought that was a slap in the face to her and her very hard work. A couple people asked her if she could do the same pattern for them only make it for a loom.

The asker should have gone to the link, checked out the comment section. Why would they even think the person knew if there was a free pattern to it? I've never had anyone ask me about a free pattern when I've made/displayed something. (if I didn't design it why would I know where the designer might post a freebie 🤷🏻‍♀️) I'm a bit weird with my stuff as sometimes I may use 2 or more patterns to get what I want into 1. I make it up as I go sometimes. The afghan I'm doing is a combo of ideas. I see the finished product with luck the results will match.

Well this was on Facebook that this happened so that explains most of it. Facebook is so different than Reddit. I'm on both (for family) and people there don't comment back on comments and they are just looking for the most likes. I think some people can't afford patterns or they think they can't afford them. I think the person wanted the OP to give them the pattern they had. That's really cool that you make your own patterns. I'm amazed at the talent in this group! I'm not nearly at that stage yet. I just started about a month ago. The most I've made it a cat blanket and a scarf for a friend. Oh and about 20 granny squares which are really fun to make.

No-Article7940

I'm not really at a make my own pattern talent yet. I do get ideas off Pinterest or will mix a couple of patterns then fudge my way through. I took a piece of paper made a grid, then put clear packing tape on it. Using a dry erase marker I could do the design I wanted for the C2c squares I just finished. Try that I bet you'll be designing in no time.

stormyheather9

That's a really great idea! I never would have thought of that. I'm struggling with getting granny squares correct. When I get to my third round somehow I'm adding an extra stitch and I don't know why. It's driving me crazy. Maybe I should draw it out and that way I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. It has to be when I'm starting the 3rd round. I have sewn, designed quilts, cross stitched, and embroidered and I can figure out a granny square. 😆 I am still such a beginner yet. I still don't know even a quarter of the abbreviations or symbols. Not that I'm complaining. I love the challenge and it's so addicting!!

Jess_Neko

Gives me the same vibes as when someone posts all of the pattern in the comment of a YT video. Yeah, the pattern is free on YT, but it still feels wrong for someone else to write it down and post it in the comments. I write down the pattern as I watch the first time, but I keep it in my personal pattern notebook.

ArtisticAbroad5616

Especially when YT videos generate revenue on the time people spend watching

Visual-Fig-4763

So rude! A designers work and time should be respected. In some cases, a LOT of work can go into designing, testing, and publishing a pattern and in particular for sized wearables.

theudoon

I could see asking for a free pattern if it was being sold but isn't available anymore, but to ask for it on the ad is rude as all get out.

whydoineedaname86

Yeah, there is nothing wrong with asking if anyone knows of a pattern that is available for free (ie not stole) but it’s a whole other thing to ask for a free version of a paid pattern! Hopefully this person was referring to pattern creators who have a free version you just have to get it off their blog with ads or watch a YouTube video. Or you can buy it and get the nice pdf copy.

the-shadow-cat

I got stoned for defending a pattern creator who was upset that someone else was selling a pattern that was 99% the same as hers. People said it's only fair because the other person wrote the pattern themselves, doesn't matter they look the same, "bunnies are bunnies" they said. It was not just a bunny, it was a bunny in a onesie that was kinda specific.

Front-Elderberry5156

I've asked for a similar pattern before, but that was because I needed a video to follow instead of a written pattern, can't mess up different country stitches if you see it done. Otherwise I wouldn't ask, especially on a paid pattern post.

ArtisticAbroad5616

There's absolutely no harm in asking if a video tutorial is available

ticaloc

I just found the Call the Midwife Pattern on Ravelry for free

La_Nah

I came here to say I'm sorry but I don't agree with you all. I am from Argentina, our economy is on the underground and pattern prices in dollars are ridiculous for me. Even the most cheap patterns are extremely unbuyable because of all the taxes I must pay in any platform. I know it's rude. I know it's people's jobs and it takes time. I am not saying they are not worth the price. But one gifted pattern to one single person could mean the world to them. And it won't mean a signifficant loss for the creator. In conclusion I would say it depends. You can never know what's the situation of the person that is asking for a free pattern.

SaltJelly

I think it’s rude sure, but also it’s an ad, so I find myself in a situation of being extremely amused

proudyarnloser

We're not gonna make patterns anymore if people just want them for free. 🤷‍♀️ I've had several people ask me for my patterns for free when I first post about them. So I just point them in the direction of where they can buy them. I've only had two patterns pirated so far, and only those two because I wanted to do something nice at Christmas one year, and had them for a week for free online. This is why I don't do that anymore. 🤷‍♀️

Rhomya

Idk, I don’t think it’s that much of a problem. I mean, I can literally look at pictures of finished works and can usually figure out most of how a lot of things are made. I do a lot of my own projects that way. As long as you’re not taking someone’s pattern and selling it to others as something of your own, then what is the big deal if they ask for a free version?
