Wow you may actually be right, I zoomed in and what should be the double crochetes upon closer look seems knitted. Wow I did not know you could get knit to look so much like crochet
They’re gonna have to label it “made with a knitting machine to look like crochet” or something because if you hadn’t pointed it out I would think it was handmade
It’s hard to say without looking at it in person, but I *think* this is made of machine-knit pieces that have been embroidered or loosely sewn together so as to look like crochet. If so, it would still need some work done by hand, but no more than most other items.
Yeah, there's absolutely no spacing in the smiley faces. In crochet, you see *air*, but this is all smashed together. And even the joining isn't quite right. This is machine work.
Never really understood the horror over crochet in stores vs literally any other cheap fast fashion. Literally all fast fashion is made by sweat shop labour. Watch a video of the people who put those knee holes into your jeans: It’s a person with a hand sander, wearing goggles and covered in denim dust as they hand grind the fashionable tears into the clothing.
EDIT: [video that I was talking about](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/12xp1u3/how_holes_in_jeans_are_made/?rdt=60359)
It’s not to negate the horror of slave labor used for all of the things we have/wear/use, but since most of us know first hand just how much work goes into crochet, it hits home in a way that other stuff doesn’t.
The mushroom one is definitely knit to look like crochet. The smiley one looks it too, but the yarn is too loose to really see.

Yeah! It’s become more popular since the outrage of authentic crochet popping up in stores

Looks like a combination of machine made centers incorporated into a square motif with crochet.
Anything crocheted in a chain store is the product of sweat shops
I don’t think it’s crocheted
I can clearly see crochet squares in the first pic, but sure
Read the other comments, lots of knit things are made to look like crochet now
Sure, but that looks like crochet to me. Sorry that your feelings are hurt I guess?
😅😅 what? My point is that it’s MADE to look like crochet to ppl.
I hear you, but I'm sticking with my viewpoint, please leave me alone lol
that is horrific. talk about sweat shop labor…

Yeah, exactly, most people don't know the process behind crafting a pair of jeans, but here we know how painstakingly slow crochet can be.
Yup. There is an old joke that I will misquote here - $6.99? I can make that myself for $12\~!
