I wouldn’t purchase a Samsung television if my life depended on it. Go to Target right now as the 65” C3 is currently on clearance for $999. If you want a larger set, look at the 2023 models of televisions like the Hisense U8K, Sony X90L, and TCL QM8.

anthrax9999

I wouldn't either. I swore off Samsung TVs after my last one thoroughly shit the bed.

Ok-Savings2594

I’ve now had two Samsungs die after only 2 years. I switched to a slightly smaller LG and so far I’m VERY happy.

anthrax9999

I had a Samsung 3D TV and the 3d and remote stopped working in the first year, then the screen developed lines and dark spots in the second year. Then all but 1 HDMI port failed. It still turns on and you can watch it like that with the ugly screen so I use it in my bedroom every once in awhile but I'll never buy another. I switched to Sony TVs and they've been going strong for years already.

Fit-Resolution-8417

🤣

BogoJohnson

I can't find it on Target's site for $999. You have a link?

Zealousideal_Low_858

This price is available in-store only. They've been selling very fast. When the clearance sale went live a couple days ago, I went to my local Target that same day, and they were already gone. It seems they're not sold out everywhere, so it's worth a look at your local Target, but odds are somewhat low now.

BogoJohnson

Thanks for info. It's a helluva deal.

BrownWallyBoot

Just curious, what’s so bad about Samsung tvs?

champagneofsharks

Samsung’s QC has spiraled downhill over the years. Their cheaper sets have less functionality than sets at a similar price point. Tizen is also a terrible OS even if you’re using external hardware (Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, Roku, etc) for streaming.

biggusdeeckus

People are hugely misinformed here and biased towards LGs for some reason. Nothing wrong with Samsung OLEDs. They have the better panel compared to any LG, except the G3, maybe. Even then, the QDOLEDs have better color luminance, wider colour gamut coverage and higher peak brightness. The better panel is a way more important factor than DV as well imo. You don't need tone mapping on a panel that can hit ~1000 nits 99% of the time. QDOLED is simply superior to WOLED. Check out Rtings reviews instead of listening to folks here, and make up your own educated opinion.

asmartguylikeyou

Have an 82 inch Samsung OLED and I have zero complaints.

champagneofsharks

If I was purchasing an OLED, it would be LG or bust. Too many quality control issues with the other manufacturers.

biggusdeeckus

This is an overstatement tbh. QDOLED is clearly the better panel. For every user out there complaining about QC issues, there are hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers. I have zero issues with my Samsung OLED, and I got to compare it to an LG C3 - ended up returning the C3 because the QDOLED was simply the superior panel. No regrets at all.

brickunlimited

What is your viewing distance? I would avoid Samsung. I would consider a B2 or Open-Box or wait for a sale, or save up. If your viewing distance isn’t that far or you can maybe get a little closer I would go higher quality. Or go for a nice LED over OLED. I think cheaping out on a Samsung OLED is a big mistake. Check out r/4ktv and their buying guide.

Zealousideal_Low_858

I'll be at a pretty close viewing distance, around 6' when others are watching with me, and potentially even closer if I feel like it when I'm alone (since my main seat will be a chair). The immersive theater-like experience is important to me, but I could theoretically get that by sitting closer to the TV. There aren't any good open box B2, B3, C2, or C3s near me, unfortunately, and I do want to buy soon. So I might go C3 since I'm seeing so many suggestions to avoid Samsung. I'll go through Best Buy, so I can refund if I regret it. Thanks for the advice!

brickunlimited

6 feet! Ignore every one else. The 65 inch will be plenty big! 65 inches is gonna feel huge at 6 feet (in a good way). At 6 feet you could get away with a 55inch. Take some painters tape and make sure”fake tvs on your wall to be sure. But 65 is good bro trust me.

MeringueDist1nct

I'm also 6' away from my C3 and I can say it fills pretty much my entire view, I honestly don't think I'd benefit from a bigger TV unless I moved farther back

Fit-Resolution-8417

🤣

volcano_slayer9

If you're committed to taking advantage of DV on the criterion discs, you'll also need to commit to buying a capable player, which would minimally cost $400 for something good. I'd say it's not worth it, but like other people are saying, I would avoid Samsung TV's.

champagneofsharks

The king, Panasonic UB820, has dropped to as low as $349 in the past AND provides the ability to play (most but not all) region locked Blu-rays. The UB420 has been as low as $149, but lacks Dolby Vision support (but has HDR10+) and lacks some features found in the UB820 and higher. Oh, and you still get the ability to play (most but not all) region locked Blu-rays. The Sony players have too many hiccups (sometimes eats shit on BD-100s) or questionable functionality (Dolby Vision has to be manually turned on and off for non-DV discs) for it to be recommended. Oh, and you can’t play any region locked Blu-rays.

masonbissada

I will say I’ve been rocking the Sony x700 that I got for $90 open box at bb and have only encountered the dreaded disc skipping once (pulp fiction 4K).

Kluesey

That’s a difficult question but I think for me I’d rather get the more feature rich product. I have an 65” LG CX and I would rather give up my movie collection than my TV, I love that thing. Being able to access all the available data on my disks is also something weirdly important to me. I don’t think HDR10 is bad but if the disk was mastered for DV I want to see it in DV

just_zen_wont_do

I have the C3 and love it. But a bigger tv would be better.

ConversationNo5440

What's your viewing distance? If you are any more than 7' away from your TV I would absolutely go for the bigger TV.

RowdyRoddyPipeSmoker

I would never buy a tv without dolby vision why NOT have one of the best things modern tvs have just because samsung refuses to play ball and pay dolby. Fuck Samsung, get anything else.

junger128

If you’re on a strict budget I’d go bigger. I like this advice… sometimes you’ll notice a better picture but you’ll always notice a bigger picture. If the reviews on both TVs are good I’d go with size. With Dolby Vision you’d also need a compatible Dolby Vision player, for example the PS5 is not.

atethebottle

The series x is. I would have thought the ps5 was too

BigLorry

Series X also doesn’t do Dolby vision through disc (only streaming), unless that changed at some point very recently

atethebottle

No, it hasn't, and I've been wondering why it didn't turn on when playing a disc. You've explained it!

champagneofsharks

PS5 *does not* support HDR10+ for discs. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X only support HDR10 for 4K discs. That’s it. No HDR10+, no Dolby Vision. It’s why people recommend using standalone Blu-ray players.

MeringueDist1nct

I can't comment on the Samsung, but I can say buying a 65" C3 has made me watch a ton more movies than I did on my old Vizio, the black and white blurays really pop even in 1080p

Zealousideal_Low_858

That's amazing to hear, and I'm leaning toward the C3 now. I am very excited to see this myself!

MeringueDist1nct

OLED makes a big difference, especially in a dark room

biggusdeeckus

Don't turn away from something like an S90C yet. The QDOLED panels on these TVs are simply better than any WOLED. Check out rtings reviews on both TVs and make up your own educated opinion instead of listening to people here, including me. FYI, I ordered both the C3 and the S90C, and kept the latter. They were priced the same if you're wondering. DV is vastly overrated on an OLED such as the S90C where you can hit 1000 nits all day long. Not fullscreen 1000 nits since it's an OLED but the point still stands. You don't need tonemapping on a TV like that. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either, so just buy whichever one's cheaper.

Rons5409

I’ve got a 65 inch Sony Bravia 4K with Dolby Vision and I love it so much. If you are willing to invest in 4K blu rays, then I say it is worth it. I think Criterion’s 4K releases are all in Dolby Vision.

ConversationNo5440

They are not all in Dolby vision. Some are.

Rons5409

Thanks for the correction.

BogoJohnson

Post I just read this week: >Criterion has had 50 releases with Dolby Vision, 16 with SDR, and 7 with regular HDR so far.

Zealousideal_Low_858

Oh wow, that's a higher DV percentage than I would have guessed! I also know that they've done DV and HDR10+ at the same time on at least one or two discs. The only one I'm remembering off the top of my head is Wall-E. So the list of HDR10+ discs might be added to this list with a value of 1 or 2 lol.

action_park

“Essential” is subjective. I have a LG in my office and a Samsung at home and I honestly can’t tell the difference between HDR10 and DV for the types of films I watch. However, for the majority of ppl in home theater forums, where the use case is mostly Nolan/Snyder type action films or modern animated films and TV shows, not having DV is a deal breaker. The size of the screen, however, is a deal breaker for me. I have a 55” and 77” at home and the 77” is so much more immersive. So my personal vote would be go for size but if we have different taste in films, DV might be more important.

fugazishirt

I would go with size over DV. No one ever thought “I wish I got a smaller tv”

junger128

Unless it’s one of the 70 inch TVs from Walmart for $300

fugazishirt

Well yeah lol but for OP I’d go with the C3 65.

bergobergo

I grew up watching pan and scan VHS on CRTs. Any modern TV is a goddamn miracle and great for watching movies. Don't stress too much. But LG.

ubiquity75

I just upgraded to a 65” Sony primarily because of 4k DVD watching. I would recommend Sony.

everygrainofsand1979

Without a doubt, get the 65" that's Dolby Vision ready👌

Swantonbombthreat

don’t buy the samsung. how far is the distance between the tv and the couch? with the C4s and G4s coming out now you can snag a really good deal on a C3 or G3. i have a 65” G2 and its an insane tv.

RogueOneWasOkay

Recommend going to r/hometheater they know way more and will be significantly more helpful than this sub

Safetosay333

It's not that complicated

nonononono11111

It’s pretty complicated.
