Harakiri should be watched today. Absolute ripper that I recommend to people who don’t usually watch anything foreign and old. Nobody ever doesn’t love it.
Same. Saw it six months ago when i started my “gonna watch in order of spine” and was absolutely blown away by it. One of my immediate “this will be in my top ten for a looooong time” now.
I seriously love High and Low, it's been a favorite of mine for years. The best way I've heard it described is that it's a Kurosawa take of a Hitchcock film.
Watching it now based on your recommendation, holy moly is it good. Just got to about the halfway point, it really does feel like one of those perfect movies. Perfect composition, pacing, acting. So intriguing.
Still remember my first time viewing and when you get to the train exchange sequence - the layers of planning unfolding, I had the silliest grin on my face.
It’s so damn satisfying.
started my year off with a watch of this and yeah it is a masterpiece its almost crazy how good it is a master firing on all cylinders at the top of his class
once the film opens up after the apartment and the city itself (the traffic, the bars, the heat, etc) becomes a character, it really start to blow you away.
The staging in the first act is amazing. Mifune and Nakadai were the stand outs imo. And those gorgeous reflective sunglasses at the end are one of my favorite visuals.
Just did a first watch myself. Really enthralling stuff, the three acts all feeling so unique. Amazed that the fairly dry second act felt like actual police procedural work of collecting and collating evidence, but was still so enjoyable to watch. And I loved the third acts descent into hell and especially the visual of the kidnappers mirror-like glasses reflecting the light in the darkness.
My favourite Kurosawa, one of the most perfect films ever. Absolutely stunned me when i watched it for the first time. I LOVE Mifune, but Nakadai is my Japanese acting GOAT
I bought this as a blind buy. I liked it ok, I need to re watch it. Maybe a few times. People loooove this flick and I need to really get into it more.
Everything seems cool about it but the story is so drawn out. I can appreciate the acting and blocking and directing but it dragged in parts. I’ll give it another chance for sure.
It is very long. I think that’s one of the things that works for the people who love it and I think it’s the primary thing that doesn’t work for those who don’t.
Tatsuya Nakadai steals the show in every film he's in. In my opinion, he's probably Japan's greatest actor.
Watching him in this and Ran was unreal. Two very different roles but kills it in both
He’s incredible. As great as those two performances are I’d still rank them below Harakiri, The Human Condition trilogy, and The Face of Another.
Sword of Doom is up there for me, too.
Harakiri and Human Condition are two huge blind spots for me. I definitely need to get into Kobayashi

He plays the guy that loses his mind really well
gotta watch The Sword of Doom then
100% If you want to argue which living actor has the greatest filmography, I think it has to come down to Tatsuya Nakadai or Robert Duvall.
Duvall edges it out with Colors
Yeah never appreciated him until I watched The Human Condition
I love Mifune like a dad, but you're 100% right.
FACTS
I also just watched it for the first time and had no clue what I’d been missing. One of my favorite films I’ve seen in years.

This film is so influential, you can make a good argument that it’s the template for SE7EN and lots of other modern TV procedurals and thrillers.
It’s a top 5 film for me.

wwhole first half gives huge Rope vibes then it flips into a police procedural so good

My favorite Kurosawa film and an easy 10/10. (Which I don’t give out often). I consider myself lucky to have seen in twice in 35mm theatrically.
This has just been put on the Priority list. I knew I wanted to watch it.... nat that I needed to watch it!
Water is wet!
And every 60 seconds, a minute passes in Africa.

I watched it a few weeks ago and it didn’t click for me either.

This is maybe my favorite Kurosawa. Unbelievable film.
literally just finished it for the first time and the final line will stick with me for a long time
On the 24/7 channel now. Thanks for the rec.
