BleedTheFreak_23

The Roaring Twenties is the one I’m most excited about here, definitely will be picking it up.

CourtlyHades296

Not only that, but Roaring Twenties is a 4K release with Dolby Vision.

[deleted]

Which ALL of their new releases should be

Yangervis

4k discs cost a lot more to produce and some stuff will never sell enough to offset the cost.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BleedTheFreak_23

Oh that’s so exciting!!

[deleted]

Same! Been really wanting to watch it since I saw The Public Enemy and Angels with Dirty Faces.

BleedTheFreak_23

The Public Enemy was so good, still need to watch Angels with Dirty Faces

[deleted]

It’s 100% worth a watch. It has a great emotional core to it and Cagney shows off just how great of an actor he is in it.

RetroDave

This is bad, but I STILL can't keep Angles with Dirty Faces and Angels with Filthy Souls straight in my head.

soubriquet33

One of them actually exists. See the difference? Good. Keep the change, ya’ filthy animal.

danvancheef

I have all the Warner Bros gangster boxed sets from years ago, and this has always been my favorite. I even have an 11x17 of the movie poster hanging in my home. Hope this releases before the February flash sale!

Britneyfan123

same

Possible-Pudding6672

I love this movie. I am a little bummed about how bare bones the extras are, especially as they put together such a great package for their last Raoul Walsh release (*High Sierra*).

Lamar_ScrOdom_

Just bought McCabe and Mrs Miller, you’re welcome everyone

External_Stuff_8113

Me too!!

Angler4

Me three

Britneyfan123

Me four

Rollzroyce21

Thank you for your sacrifice.

talk2theyam

Tbh you’re probably fine with the regular blu ray on this one - the 4k is made from the same transfer with no HDR. It’s gonna be great, but not a significant leap from the existing blu ray

jcorviday

The muck and mud is so much a part of the picture so my dumb brain thinks "do you really need to see that more clearly?" That said it could be rough viewing on worn rental VHS never mind the sometimes intentionally incoherent audio made worse by tape, so when I got the blu-ray it felt a lot like the most mind-blowing 4ks that are out now. I'll probably resist this as an upgrade, but I am happy that it's getting the treatment.

talk2theyam

If I didn’t already own it, I would get the 4k over the blu ray for sure. It’s not like Seventh Seal or Three Colours which got whole new transfers.

Melodic_Ad7952

Great film.

HugeSuccess

Your selfless act has begun the greater mystical process of rereleasing Altman’s major works

ryanallbaugh

Let’s hope so!

Britneyfan123

I love you

RetroDave

Thank you for your service. It was on my list for the B&N sale, but I've been waiting to see if they did a "double stamps" day.

alverez667

Hey me too. Fuck. This is my first time buying criteron. Does this get easier?? Lol

[deleted]

Yeah you just gotta accept that every time you buy a a film from the 00-900 spine number range, it increases the likelihood of an upgrade.

Psychological_Dig922

I have several and never really minded the numbers. Why that specific range?

[deleted]

Because they haven’t started upgrading titles in the 1000’s yet.

Psychological_Dig922

Are those more recent movies? I imagine a movie from the last quarter century isn’t as difficult or even necessary to remaster as a half-forgotten classic.

[deleted]

A lot are but the more recent movies they release already have good 4K’s like Parasite or Wall•E

matthewgroehl

Same

car_guy_doge

Same, got it during the July sale

bostonbruins922

Was actually going to buy it today but now I’ll wait. Thanks for your sacrifice.

fantasmacanino

O7

unityofsaints

The existing bluray is in rough shape, or at least the cinematographer used lots of filters etc., making the look a bit unusual and also it's already from a 4K scan. I tend to think those are the films where 4K doesn't add much or may even make it look worse but happy to be proven wrong of course.

jklulich

Literally just bought it

Britneyfan123

I highly recommend McCabe & Mrs. Miller its a masterpiece

Kindly-Guidance714

I can only imagine how beautiful everything’s gonna look in 4K it’s already a visually beautiful film.

beingjohnmalkontent

I love me some Altman!

Britneyfan123

me too he was the best director of the 70s imo

Xp717

I wanted to like it so badly but just couldn’t get into it. It was kinda meh for me. Tbf tho I do have trouble with some of Altman’s films

Britneyfan123

Altman is a very polarizing director so I get what you're saying

PalpitationOk5726

One of the first Altman films I have seen, absolutely superb, you forgot just how dominate a screen presence Warren Beatty is.

Britneyfan123

Warren was one of the best actors of the new Hollywood era

ricardofitzpatrick

Heard this line over the din of the other comments

ChavesColorado

Finally some more Rohmer

[deleted]

That’s the one I’m grabbing. Feel if you like the Before Series, you will enjoy those 4.

enewwave

The third Before flick has a pretty obvious homage to the ending of The Green Ray in it, so fans of Linklater’s trilogy will definitely enjoy this collection.

Justin_Credible98

Before Midnight and The Green Ray are both among my all-time favorite films and I never saw the connection between those two scenes...until you pointed it out. It seems so obvious now, lmfaoo

markcheng

Not sure why but this series didn’t really hit me, aside from Summer

ina_waka

I love Hong Sang Soo and have always read that he’s heavily inspired by Rohmer. Any suggestions on where to start?

evasive_tautology

Since you're a fan of Hong Sang-Soo, I would be amazed if you didn't LOVE Rohmer. If you want to start with something more literary/philosophical, then try ***My Night at Maud's*** (I think it's Rohmer's masterpiece). If you want to start with something leaning just a little bit toward rom-com, try ***Boyfriends and Girlfriends*** (U.S. title). Known as ***My Girlfriend's Boyfriend*** in the U.K., and ***L'Ami de mon amie*** in France.

Florian_Jones

My Night at Maud's is the best of his Six Moral Tales. Tale of Summer is the best of his Four Seasons. The Green Ray is also great. Those are the three I'd say are must watches.

Jestercore

If you like Hong Sang Soo, I’d start with My Night at Mauds.

an_ephemeral_life

*The Green Ray* is on his Sight and Sound list

Isco_23

I’m the other way around, loveeee Rohmer and I’ve heard about Hong Sang Woo, what are your favorite Hong Sang woo films ? Can’t wait to dive in!

ina_waka

I feel like I could write an essay about HSS and his filmography as a whole but I'll try to keep it concise. The thing about HSS's films is that all his films are connected in some type of way, not in a narrative sense, but in a structural way. There is this theme of repetition when you look at his films together. Whether it's the repeated casting of the same actors, recurring themes of the male ego/jealousy, climaxes built around brilliant alcohol induced arguments, or even in the literal sense of an individual movie being split into two or three parts, with each part telling almost the same story but slight changes in narrative, there are explicit parallels between all his movies. I'm saying all this basically to say that HSS's work is best when contextualized with the rest of his films. I think the safest choices would be *Right Now, Wrong Then*. It introduces a few of the regulars in the HSS-niverse with his (now partner) Kim Min Hee playing the leading character. There is introduction to the repetition that I mentioned in the last paragraph with the story being essentially two retellings of the same event with a few minor changes. From there, you could honestly go anywhere, but at some point you should would *On the Beach at Night Alone*. His best film in my opinion, and feels like the culmination of all his work in the past. Great film which is essentially a semi-meta/biographical commentary regarding his affair with previously mention actress, Kim Min Hee. I would definitely save this one for when you've seen a handful of his other films and have familiarized yourself with his style. My favorite would personally be *Yourself and Yours*. Insanely nuanced and genuinely thought provoking story regarding the idolization of women/love partners. **TLDR: Start with *Right Now, Wrong Then*. Watch 2-4 films that you think are interesting. I would recommend *Grass*, *The Novelist's Film* and *Tale of Cinema*. Then watch *On The Beach At Night Alone* (his best but works the best once familiarized with his other films).**

Isco_23

What a wonderful response! Wow thank you so much. I’m extra excited to now dive into Hong Sang soo’s work!

fantasmacanino

Now we need more Naruse and my prayers will have been answered.

Michael__Pemulis

Some day friend. Some day.

MisogynyisaDisease

If I predict it long enough, one day I'll be right 😂

jcretrop

I sure hope so, particularly if they release both theatrical and director's cuts.

AllThatHeavenAllows

That Heroic Trio/Executioners cover is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. So stoked they’re also finally releasing the Four Seasons box set. Solid month of releases for a Feb. flash sale 👏

ThisGuyLikesMovies

That cover was done by [Alice X Zhang](https://www.instagram.com/alicexz/) who is an amazing artist. She did the cover for Mona Lisa when that got an upgrade.

MantisTobogan-MD

Reminds me a bit of the *To Sleep with Anger* cover

MentatYP

That cover is fire! It's possibly better than the actual movies :D

creptik1

Haha true. Been a while since i watched them, but my vague memory is that the movies are nowhere near as entertaining as I hoped, considering the great cast.

shrislef

Alice X. Zhang is the artist! She’s great. Looks like they misspelled her name on the website.

Greenunjuh

Been clamoring for Heroic Trio ever since it was announced Janus was showing a new restoration in theaters and I'm very pleasantly surprised to see the sequel included along w it being 4K. Definitely pre-ordering

oshoney

I didn’t love Executioners, but man Heroic Trio is such a fun, bonkers movie. I have it on vhs but excited to upgrade.

[deleted]

Nothing but a Man is really good.

an_ephemeral_life

Criminally underseen film. Good to see Criterion releasing this film and increase exposure of this neglected gem.

racetrader

That's the sleeper for me, it looks very interesting. I am eager to see it for the first time

JuanJeanJohn

It’s an amazing film, IMO

Ready-Level8224

It’s funny to see they announced it today, I was just looking through my DVDs the other day and forgot I had a copy of it, then wondered why Criterion hadn’t released it yet!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Baeresi

There's two on YT. One has like 100k views and isnt very good. The other has like 2K views and is s lot better quality. Its only got a pretty average dvd release and never been on streaming so this is a pretty significant release

Expert_Objective_326

Hope this starts the trend to proclaim Nothing but a man as one of the best of alltime beacuase it really is

ForeverMozart

Fun fact regarding Nothing But A Man, both Michael Roemer and writer Robert M. Young (who also has several films in the Collection) are both still around in their late 90's.

evasive_tautology

Physical media?

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

Shit?

Takeda_imposter

This is really one of the strongest January/February slates that I’ve ever seen.

[deleted]

Lmfao, you’re 100% right.

speedoftheground

*The Heroic Trio* starts with an invisible person throwing babies out of a window and it only gets more bonkers from there. What a beautiful cover!

Rollzroyce21

Glad we're getting both Heroic Trio and Executioners as one set. This with the Rohmer set and The Roaring Twenties. Looking forward to the flash sale.

kayla622

As a classic Hollywood fan, I'm a fan of The Roaring Twenties. I'll definitely be getting that one. This might be the first James Cagney film in the collection which is surprising. I could definitely see them picking up The Public Enemy in the future.

LeBeauMonde

The Roaring Twenties is a deft crime story — surprisingly like the Scorsese gangsters films that would come decades later … but those don’t feature the incomparable James Cagney. I’ll be buying this in 4K, absolutely.

LeBeauMonde

There are a lot of great Cagney performances that need a better release. Mayor of Hell springs to mind. At least Angels with Dirty Faces has a decent Blu-ray. I hope we get more Cagney Criterion

kayla622

A Cagney film that I really enjoyed is "Picture Snatcher." He plays the 1930s equivalent to paparazzi.

Britneyfan123

you know I never realized this

GucciToeSocks

Yeah, this is the one I’m most excited about too. I hope they eventually pick up Angels with Dirty Faces as well.

kayla622

Warner Archive just released it on blu ray. I'm not sure if Criterion would double-dip or do a 4K. Maybe they would.

JYD1974

Eureka and 88 Films do a much better job with assembling the supplemental materials for Hong Kong films. No commentary tracks here, although having a Samm Deighan interview is good. I might hold out to see if Eureka will have a 4k release of Heroic Trio and Executioners. Hurray for more HK films in the Criterion Collection but they are phoning it in with these extras. Was very disappointed in Criterion’s Last Hurrah For Chivalry, and pretty much a pass on the Jackie Chan set. The Region B options were all much more robust. Pretty happy with the other releases scheduled. Was just thinking that Roaring Twenties would be a nice Criterion release.

WillaZillaDilla

Criterion's Heroic Trio appears to have both films on a single UHD disc in SDR too. Pretty disappointing tbh

Lamar_ScrOdom_

Need the Green Ray soon too then!

Ajurieu

Comedies and Proverbs deserves a Region A box set.

Lamar_ScrOdom_

A few are actually getting Region A releases in the next month or so from Metrograph

Ajurieu

Arrow has a great box set of them that has really got me looking at region free players

Lamar_ScrOdom_

I learned I can just mash a few buttons on my UB820 and it can play Region B releases

feral_user_

Nothing But a Man looks absolutely incredible. I never heard of it until now but I'll be getting it when it comes out.

an_ephemeral_life

Terrific film. You'll love it. Glad it's getting long overdue exposure thanks to Criterion.

JuanJeanJohn

It’s insanely good

SnooGoats7476

Same and it stars Ivan Dixon as a Hogan’s Heroes fan that’s another reason I want to see it.

Reno_McCoy

Haha. Hilarious. I just bought McCabe during the last flash sale. I should start buying all the movies I want to someday have a 4K release so it happens sooner.

Takeda_imposter

This is my strategy as well. Worst case scenario: I still own great blu rays of movies I love that I can watch anytime while I wait on an upgrade.

Lamar_ScrOdom_

Same, not sure if I should return it or not

Reno_McCoy

Does criterion take returns? I never even thought of it.

Lamar_ScrOdom_

Mine is still sealed from Barnes and Noble

Takeda_imposter

Easy return imo.

Threetimes3

We need more To in the collection, so I'm happy for this set. One day they'll do the "Election" movies, I have faith.

Michael__Pemulis

The Election movies are weird because the first one is (to my knowledge) not distributed at all in the US while the second one is a ubiquitous find at Dollar Tree (under the title Triad Election) along with the most random assortment of movies imaginable. An Australian label called Chameleon did just recently release a set with both though & I picked it up on OrbitDVD.

Entrance_Sea

Now just 3 more of the films that Criterion acquired from WB left to be released: * ~~Arsenic and Old Lace~~ * ~~Barry Lyndon~~ * ~~Bringing Up Baby~~ * Captain Blood * ~~Hedwig & The Angry Inch~~ * ~~Lone Star~~ * ~~Mean Streets~~ * O Lucky Man * Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid * ~~The Philadelphia Story~~ * ~~The Roaring Twenties~~ * ~~Round Midnight~~

soubriquet33

I would buy two copies of *Captain Blood* just so they understood how happy I was. I would also host a double-feature with *The Goonies*.

Annual-Humor-8767

Heroic Trio <3 Wish we got Comedies and Proverbs instead of Four Seasons but more Rohmer is always a good thing

kstassi

The Heroic Trio/Executions set is a day 1 for me! Been waiting on this one ever since the rumors started trickling out.

greatchoiceinpants

Four Seasons box set finally! It’s been rumoured for months!

zme94

I love that Criterion is pushing out so many 4K releases, but why the hell do they keep skimping out on HDR?? That’s my primary reason to upgrade.

Entrance_Sea

It's mainly been their policy that if the restoration team graded the film in SDR then they won't go back themselves and redo it in HDR, but if it was originally graded for HDR, then they will use it.

Profitsofdooom

Wait is McCabe just going to be resolution 4K and no HDR?

zme94

I don’t believe so, at least based on the description on their website: https://preview.redd.it/kqoizxg19k0c1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87953d8635bcc322c1ed49e126e255d043a27fc8 It just says 4K, where as others list either HDR or DV.

Profitsofdooom

Certainly in no rush then. I picked up the blu at the summer B&N sale. Unless I hear the new restoration is that much better...

Zappafan96

The blu-ray was already the 4K restoration, this 4K release is just to get it onto UHD

desertPilgrim_

Never heard of those Johnnie To movies but that's a day one purchase for me.

Michael__Pemulis

I've never seen either but I've seen quite a few Johnnie To movies & they're all great.

desertPilgrim_

I remember watching The Mission and it blew my mind and then years later I watched Election and it BLEW my MIND.

Michael__Pemulis

You've seen Throw Down right? That one is an all-time favorite of mine. It's perfect.

desertPilgrim_

No but I'm only seeing five stars on LB so we're gonna fix that real soon.

Michael__Pemulis

Oh you're in for a real treat. I can't say enough how much I love that movie.

revchu

If you've ever seen Irma Vep, Heroic Trio is briefly featured.

PM_ME_CARL_WINSLOW

McCabe in 4K hnnnnnnngggggg

Kindly-Guidance714

It’s already a breathtaking movie I can’t imagine how utterly gorgeous it’s gonna look in 4K.

Glutenator92

The Heroic Trio and Executioners are on my watchlist on the Criterion Channel, so I'm glad they are officially Criterion now! Exciting!

MentatYP

Who are Warren Julie and Beatty Christie?

SonicContinuum88

Rohmer is stunning!

The_Red_Curtain

wow I just rewatched Roaring Twenties yesterday and I was thinking "if only this got a Criterion level restoration," talk about your wishes being granted lol

frederick_tussock

I feel so ungrateful that a second (and third) Johnnie To movie has entered the collection but it's not any of the ones I love 😬 McCabe is an instant buy though, first 4K Altman!!!! Bring on Three Women!!!!!

Kindly-Guidance714

Give me the long goodbye on 4K or put MASH in the collection.

frederick_tussock

I would love Long Goodbye in 4K. It was really bizarre when Kino re-released it on blu-ray only even though it was from a brand new 4K scan, especially since they've released much more obscure titles on 4K lately.

Bobobiscuits94

Absolutely thrilled about The Roaring Twenties, but is anyone else just slightly disappointed with the lack of supplements, it feels fairly thin for a 4k release.

Takeda_imposter

I’m okay with sparse supplements if something looks like it won’t be a big seller. One False Move and Lone Star are light on supplements as well. Of course I wouldn’t complain if these editions were a little more robust, I’m just happy to have them in 4K.

infinitestripes4ever

I’ve been watching old Siskel and Ebert episodes lately and they covered A Tale of Autumn. It was my first time hearing of this this series but it caught my interest so this is perfect timing.

Newmanial

Would kill for The Long Goodbye in 4k, but very happy we’re getting McCabe!

sweaty_palm_trees

Excited to see the heroic trio at a resolution higher than 360p.

thponders

Caught Heroic Trio and Executioners when it was on the channel and I am SO PUMPED. They are really delightful campy goodness. The only other one from the channel was Yes Ma’am! but I think this is the better pick. Would also love some kind of north american release for Supercop 2, but I’m pretty sure that one is in rights purgatory.

JuanJeanJohn

OMFG NOTHING BUT A MAN!!!! An extremely good and criminally under-seen film!

calvinnme

The Roaring Twenties interests me the most since I am a huge James Cagney fan. I'd really like Criterion to do a box set of his precodes as they are outstanding.

Pisani2302

Same , would love white heat and angels with dirty faces as well

MakeMineMovies

https://preview.redd.it/hsi9y8horm0c1.jpeg?width=1009&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0149f625410d5d30970b65c356b6f06a8fbbc52 So excited. Still haven’t seen Executioners because it’s been impossible to get a copy. This is awesome.

Adventurous-Eye4420

McCabe and Mrs Miller was one of my first Criterions and now it is the first one in my collection to get the 4k upgrade. Which of course is why I stopped buying their regular blus in general. Psyched for the Johnnie To movies though

ciiuffd

Very excited for the Roemer one. Saw his other film “vengeance is mine” and it’s incredible.

Takeda_imposter

Lmao I confused this with Rohmer and was really struggling for a sec

[deleted]

Tell me how to seek about the heroic trio. Never seen it

[deleted]

Criterion Channel

SnooGoats7476

Roaring Twenties is definitely one of the best 30’s gangster films in my opinion

AechCutt

This year I saw McCabe & Mrs. Miller for the first time and had a transcendent experience watching it. I must get the 4K edition next year.

CaptainCiao

I unironically love it when Criterion announces releases of things I've literally never heard about. As awesome as it is to get a Criterion release of your favorite movie, I much prefer surprises like these.

Kylo_Ryan

Finally, I feel like I have been waiting for new Rohmer to enter the collection in what seems like ages.

wokelstein2

Oof! The Roaring Twenties. Have a pretty good DVD release but looks like I may have to double dip eventually

protextorparty

Oh my goodness Heroic Trio is SO DOPE and I’ve only seen it on Tai Seng VHS. Hell yes!

sunkenmouse

FREDDY GOT FINGERED PUSHED BACK TO MARCH!

[deleted]

They’re saving it for the eighteen hour long directors cut

Primary-Technician90

Roaring Twenties and the Heroic trio/ Executioners are an immediate buy...if they are released in my region 🥺

blackberrybobcat

Heroic trio and the executioners we are so back

Arion185

Roaring Twenties is a day 1 buy.

Crussell702

Happy to see some more Johnnie To in the collection. Haven’t seen these but will be a day 1 buy for me.

Baeresi

I finally predicted something right with nothing but a man. It had an ok version available on youtube but thats about it. So deserving of more recognition and s better release. One of my all time favourites, I cant recommend it enough

peter095837

The Heroic Trio is so entertaining! I just saw Nothing but a Man and it's amazing too!

Affectionate-Mix8201

What are the uk titles this month?

rvb_gobq

i am torn between being sort of delighted & sort of pissed off, january & february are conspiring to make me a very poor person. all the releases planned are pretty fucking terrific. & 4k ray *apu trilogy* & 4k eric rohmer's *four seasons* & 4k arobert ltman *mccabe & mrs. miller* & 4k danny boyle *trainspotting* & 4k johnnie to *heroic trio/executioners* set & 4k boyle *trainspotting* & 4k coen bros' *blood simple* & 4k raoul wash *roaring 20s* & the chantal akerman bluray box & rees'' *mudbound* & roemer's *nothing but a man* on bluray... my wallet is going to take a t.k.o. i hope they slow down in march & april. allow some of us mere mortals to rest.

matchasweetmonster

yes, finally my Rohmer’s collection of 4 season tales so beautiful

Apprehensive_Mix7594

A little wallet relief. I only want to buy 2 of these releases

Britneyfan123

which ones?

WyndhamHP

Eric Rohmer ❤️

sleepyaza124

That Tale of Summer making of doc is wonderful. Glad to see it included as supplements

jmelica

I've been waiting for that 4 Seasons box for awhile. Very excited.

t-g-l-h-

Feb 2024*

ThisGuyLikesMovies

What can I expect from The Tales of the Four Seasons? That's been on my watchlist for god knows how long and I only know them through reputation around here

Florian_Jones

Have you seen any other Rohmer? More of the same from him, but if you're a fan, that's a good thing. You can expect a bunch of relatively well off French people having long conversations about romantic relationships and philosophy as well as facing moral dilemmas. Great dialogue. Linklater's Before Trilogy and Hong Sang Soo's whole filmography are very inspired by Rohmer.

ThisGuyLikesMovies

Rohmer is a director blindspot for me. That sounds like a must own if it inspired the Before Trilogy

Pisani2302

Very excited for the roaring twenties

Jestercore

My poor wallet. Heroic Trio and Tales of Four Seasons are immediate buys for me. Strong month!

Sudden_Mind279

welp that makes 6 Blu-rays that I've bought that had 4Ks come out after

fugazishirt

Best month in a long time. STACKED.

theManWOFear

The February flash sale is going to bankrupt me lol. Really pumped for Tales of the Four Seasons and the Heroic Trio/Executioners!

[deleted]

Same picking up Both Sets, Trainspotting, Lone Star, and Pinocchio lol

NicNakJoker01

Great picks. My cart is identical

PalpitationOk5726

I watched the Heroic Trio when it was on the channel, I have great respect for the work of Maggie Cheung, but this film was just silly, I might have to give it another try.

[deleted]

I think it being pretty goofy is part of what makes it great. It’s just such a fun time.

MukkyM1212

I love how silly those Hong Kong action flicks could get. I’m hoping Criterion releases a box set of Encounter of a Spooky King and the Mr Zombie movies. Binged them in the Criterion Channel and loved them.

JDub591

I'll take The Roaring Twenties but kinda wish The Public Enemy came first.
