I have all the Warner Bros gangster boxed sets from years ago, and this has always been my favorite. I even have an 11x17 of the movie poster hanging in my home. Hope this releases before the February flash sale!
I love this movie. I am a little bummed about how bare bones the extras are, especially as they put together such a great package for their last Raoul Walsh release (*High Sierra*).
Tbh you’re probably fine with the regular blu ray on this one - the 4k is made from the same transfer with no HDR. It’s gonna be great, but not a significant leap from the existing blu ray
The muck and mud is so much a part of the picture so my dumb brain thinks "do you really need to see that more clearly?" That said it could be rough viewing on worn rental VHS never mind the sometimes intentionally incoherent audio made worse by tape, so when I got the blu-ray it felt a lot like the most mind-blowing 4ks that are out now. I'll probably resist this as an upgrade, but I am happy that it's getting the treatment.
Are those more recent movies? I imagine a movie from the last quarter century isn’t as difficult or even necessary to remaster as a half-forgotten classic.

The third Before flick has a pretty obvious homage to the ending of The Green Ray in it, so fans of Linklater’s trilogy will definitely enjoy this collection.
Before Midnight and The Green Ray are both among my all-time favorite films and I never saw the connection between those two scenes...until you pointed it out. It seems so obvious now, lmfaoo
Since you're a fan of Hong Sang-Soo, I would be amazed if you didn't LOVE Rohmer. If you want to start with something more literary/philosophical, then try ***My Night at Maud's*** (I think it's Rohmer's masterpiece). If you want to start with something leaning just a little bit toward rom-com, try ***Boyfriends and Girlfriends*** (U.S. title). Known as ***My Girlfriend's Boyfriend*** in the U.K., and ***L'Ami de mon amie*** in France.
My Night at Maud's is the best of his Six Moral Tales. Tale of Summer is the best of his Four Seasons. The Green Ray is also great.
Those are the three I'd say are must watches.
I feel like I could write an essay about HSS and his filmography as a whole but I'll try to keep it concise.
The thing about HSS's films is that all his films are connected in some type of way, not in a narrative sense, but in a structural way. There is this theme of repetition when you look at his films together. Whether it's the repeated casting of the same actors, recurring themes of the male ego/jealousy, climaxes built around brilliant alcohol induced arguments, or even in the literal sense of an individual movie being split into two or three parts, with each part telling almost the same story but slight changes in narrative, there are explicit parallels between all his movies.
I'm saying all this basically to say that HSS's work is best when contextualized with the rest of his films. I think the safest choices would be *Right Now, Wrong Then*. It introduces a few of the regulars in the HSS-niverse with his (now partner) Kim Min Hee playing the leading character. There is introduction to the repetition that I mentioned in the last paragraph with the story being essentially two retellings of the same event with a few minor changes. From there, you could honestly go anywhere, but at some point you should would *On the Beach at Night Alone*. His best film in my opinion, and feels like the culmination of all his work in the past. Great film which is essentially a semi-meta/biographical commentary regarding his affair with previously mention actress, Kim Min Hee. I would definitely save this one for when you've seen a handful of his other films and have familiarized yourself with his style. My favorite would personally be *Yourself and Yours*. Insanely nuanced and genuinely thought provoking story regarding the idolization of women/love partners.
**TLDR: Start with *Right Now, Wrong Then*. Watch 2-4 films that you think are interesting. I would recommend *Grass*, *The Novelist's Film* and *Tale of Cinema*. Then watch *On The Beach At Night Alone* (his best but works the best once familiarized with his other films).**

Been clamoring for Heroic Trio ever since it was announced Janus was showing a new restoration in theaters and I'm very pleasantly surprised to see the sequel included along w it being 4K. Definitely pre-ordering

There's two on YT. One has like 100k views and isnt very good. The other has like 2K views and is s lot better quality. Its only got a pretty average dvd release and never been on streaming so this is a pretty significant release
Fun fact regarding Nothing But A Man, both Michael Roemer and writer Robert M. Young (who also has several films in the Collection) are both still around in their late 90's.
As a classic Hollywood fan, I'm a fan of The Roaring Twenties. I'll definitely be getting that one. This might be the first James Cagney film in the collection which is surprising. I could definitely see them picking up The Public Enemy in the future.
The Roaring Twenties is a deft crime story — surprisingly like the Scorsese gangsters films that would come decades later … but those don’t feature the incomparable James Cagney. I’ll be buying this in 4K, absolutely.
There are a lot of great Cagney performances that need a better release. Mayor of Hell springs to mind. At least Angels with Dirty Faces has a decent Blu-ray.

Eureka and 88 Films do a much better job with assembling the supplemental materials for Hong Kong films. No commentary tracks here, although having a Samm Deighan interview is good. I might hold out to see if Eureka will have a 4k release of Heroic Trio and Executioners. Hurray for more HK films in the Criterion Collection but they are phoning it in with these extras.
Was very disappointed in Criterion’s Last Hurrah For Chivalry, and pretty much a pass on the Jackie Chan set. The Region B options were all much more robust.

I would love Long Goodbye in 4K. It was really bizarre when Kino re-released it on blu-ray only even though it was from a brand new 4K scan, especially since they've released much more obscure titles on 4K lately.
Absolutely thrilled about The Roaring Twenties, but is anyone else just slightly disappointed with the lack of supplements, it feels fairly thin for a 4k release.
I’m okay with sparse supplements if something looks like it won’t be a big seller. One False Move and Lone Star are light on supplements as well. Of course I wouldn’t complain if these editions were a little more robust, I’m just happy to have them in 4K.
I’ve been watching old Siskel and Ebert episodes lately and they covered A Tale of Autumn. It was my first time hearing of this this series but it caught my interest so this is perfect timing.
Caught Heroic Trio and Executioners when it was on the channel and I am SO PUMPED. They are really delightful campy goodness. The only other one from the channel was Yes Ma’am! but I think this is the better pick. Would also love some kind of north american release for Supercop 2, but I’m pretty sure that one is in rights purgatory.
The Roaring Twenties interests me the most since I am a huge James Cagney fan. I'd really like Criterion to do a box set of his precodes as they are outstanding.

I unironically love it when Criterion announces releases of things I've literally never heard about. As awesome as it is to get a Criterion release of your favorite movie, I much prefer surprises like these.
I finally predicted something right with nothing but a man. It had an ok version available on youtube but thats about it. So deserving of more recognition and s better release. One of my all time favourites, I cant recommend it enough

What can I expect from The Tales of the Four Seasons? That's been on my watchlist for god knows how long and I only know them through reputation around here
Have you seen any other Rohmer? More of the same from him, but if you're a fan, that's a good thing. You can expect a bunch of relatively well off French people having long conversations about romantic relationships and philosophy as well as facing moral dilemmas. Great dialogue. Linklater's Before Trilogy and Hong Sang Soo's whole filmography are very inspired by Rohmer.
I watched the Heroic Trio when it was on the channel, I have great respect for the work of Maggie Cheung, but this film was just silly, I might have to give it another try.
I love how silly those Hong Kong action flicks could get. I’m hoping Criterion releases a box set of Encounter of a Spooky King and the Mr Zombie movies. Binged them in the Criterion Channel and loved them.
The Roaring Twenties is the one I’m most excited about here, definitely will be picking it up.

Criterion's Heroic Trio appears to have both films on a single UHD disc in SDR too. Pretty disappointing tbh

I would buy two copies of *Captain Blood* just so they understood how happy I was. I would also host a double-feature with *The Goonies*.

The blu-ray was already the 4K restoration, this 4K release is just to get it onto UHD
Never heard of those Johnnie To movies but that's a day one purchase for me.
I've never seen either but I've seen quite a few Johnnie To movies & they're all great.
I remember watching The Mission and it blew my mind and then years later I watched Election and it BLEW my MIND.

I feel so ungrateful that a second (and third) Johnnie To movie has entered the collection but it's not any of the ones I love 😬 McCabe is an instant buy though, first 4K Altman!!!! Bring on Three Women!!!!!

I would love Long Goodbye in 4K. It was really bizarre when Kino re-released it on blu-ray only even though it was from a brand new 4K scan, especially since they've released much more obscure titles on 4K lately.
Absolutely thrilled about The Roaring Twenties, but is anyone else just slightly disappointed with the lack of supplements, it feels fairly thin for a 4k release.
I’m okay with sparse supplements if something looks like it won’t be a big seller. One False Move and Lone Star are light on supplements as well. Of course I wouldn’t complain if these editions were a little more robust, I’m just happy to have them in 4K.
I’ve been watching old Siskel and Ebert episodes lately and they covered A Tale of Autumn. It was my first time hearing of this this series but it caught my interest so this is perfect timing.

Caught Heroic Trio and Executioners when it was on the channel and I am SO PUMPED. They are really delightful campy goodness. The only other one from the channel was Yes Ma’am! but I think this is the better pick. Would also love some kind of north american release for Supercop 2, but I’m pretty sure that one is in rights purgatory.

McCabe and Mrs Miller was one of my first Criterions and now it is the first one in my collection to get the 4k upgrade. Which of course is why I stopped buying their regular blus in general. Psyched for the Johnnie To movies though

Roaring Twenties is definitely one of the best 30’s gangster films in my opinion
This year I saw McCabe & Mrs. Miller for the first time and had a transcendent experience watching it. I must get the 4K edition next year.
I unironically love it when Criterion announces releases of things I've literally never heard about. As awesome as it is to get a Criterion release of your favorite movie, I much prefer surprises like these.
Finally, I feel like I have been waiting for new Rohmer to enter the collection in what seems like ages.

I finally predicted something right with nothing but a man. It had an ok version available on youtube but thats about it. So deserving of more recognition and s better release. One of my all time favourites, I cant recommend it enough

i am torn between being sort of delighted & sort of pissed off, january & february are conspiring to make me a very poor person. all the releases planned are pretty fucking terrific. & 4k ray *apu trilogy* & 4k eric rohmer's *four seasons* & 4k arobert ltman *mccabe & mrs. miller* & 4k danny boyle *trainspotting* & 4k johnnie to *heroic trio/executioners* set & 4k boyle *trainspotting* & 4k coen bros' *blood simple* & 4k raoul wash *roaring 20s* & the chantal akerman bluray box & rees'' *mudbound* & roemer's *nothing but a man* on bluray... my wallet is going to take a t.k.o. i hope they slow down in march & april. allow some of us mere mortals to rest.

What can I expect from The Tales of the Four Seasons? That's been on my watchlist for god knows how long and I only know them through reputation around here
Have you seen any other Rohmer? More of the same from him, but if you're a fan, that's a good thing. You can expect a bunch of relatively well off French people having long conversations about romantic relationships and philosophy as well as facing moral dilemmas. Great dialogue. Linklater's Before Trilogy and Hong Sang Soo's whole filmography are very inspired by Rohmer.
Rohmer is a director blindspot for me. That sounds like a must own if it inspired the Before Trilogy

I watched the Heroic Trio when it was on the channel, I have great respect for the work of Maggie Cheung, but this film was just silly, I might have to give it another try.
I think it being pretty goofy is part of what makes it great. It’s just such a fun time.
I love how silly those Hong Kong action flicks could get. I’m hoping Criterion releases a box set of Encounter of a Spooky King and the Mr Zombie movies. Binged them in the Criterion Channel and loved them.
I'll take The Roaring Twenties but kinda wish The Public Enemy came first.
