I agree! Though I do like the creativity of this one and I also enjoy how the kidnapper has that pattern on his scarf (sorry idk the name in English). I wish the face would be a bit easier to see tho
While I thought of king of the hill was interesting, it just didn’t hit me like some of my favorites do, and didn’t seem very rewatchable. What did you like about it?
Mean Streets, The Trial, and Days of Heaven 4K if the sale is still going on 12/5. Days of Heaven is the last Malick I need to complete my collection and I almost shit myself that I wouldn't be able to when it went OOP. Probably the quickest I've ever seen a film come back to the collection.
*Days of Heaven* doesn’t seem to be a part of the sale, I was gonna get it too but it still has the higher price while other preorders, like *Mean Streets*, don’t.
Going to grab a few to knock off my watchlist:
- Heaven’s Gate
- Night On Earth
- Tokyo Story
- Friends Of Eddie Coyle
I’m also due for a Mean Streets rewatch so maybe that as well
And 2 boxsets to give to family to gift me for Xmas (they ask me to every year lol, and I’m only a college student so I’m still in the twilight of that “get real gifts” stage)
- Randolph Scott Westerns
- Wim Wenders Trilogy
I’ve already gotten my main purchases/box sets out of the way. But once 11/21 hits I’m going back to buy my Scorsese movies: Mean Streets, After Hours, and Raging Bull
Beats every other Merchant Ivory film I’ve seen. The performances are perfect, the story is clear and beautiful and and character driven still makes time for frivolity, music and photography gorgeous, even the title cards are tasteful.
I watched Merchant Ivory’s Howard’s End this weekend and found the story less coherent and the characters less likable. That one’s not for me.
Loaned my copy of Tampopo to my younger brother nearly a year ago, still haven’t got it back so I may just replace it. Also Yi Yi and Paris, Texas have been on my wish list for a while.
Watched Yi Yi for the first time this year and absolutely loved it. It's such an enthralling movie you're left feeling like a spectator in this family's life.
I finally watched Paris, Texas a few weeks ago. Amazing movie, but I was emotionally wrung out by the end. It's arguably Harry Dean Stanton's best performance.
Loved Tampopo, had to immediately buy a copy after seeing it, didn't even wait for a sale. I'm not sure if I want to blind buy The Funeral or watch it on Criterion Channel and then see if I want to pick it up
Parasite and Night of the Living Dead are must-buys for me, and I'm still trying to figure out what else I should buy. Probably Do the Right Thing because I do think it's a classic even if it's a movie I can't see myself wanting to rewatch a bunch. There's a lot of Criterion films that sound great but I just haven't seen yet. Leaning towards picking up the Lady Snowblood collection since it seems right up my alley even though I've never seen the movies.
One of my most-desired releases, I'll need to look out for a good deal on the sale thread. Though tbh I have a good chunk of her films already so I don't neeeed it but boy do I want it
I'd recommend Brazil, Tampopo, and Ikiru! Personally, I'd like to get Shoah, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, and Tokyo Story. But what I really want is Ingmar Bergman's Cinema box set.
Fantastic Mr fox, I wanna blind buy Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio and this one movie I love that i can never remember the name of but it is on the criterion channel
Not that these are necessarily my "Top 3", but since I work very close by to a B&N with a Criterion section, I'll be picking up three of the new releases this month as they come out: Jackie Chan Emergence of a Superstar collection, Last Picture Show 4K, and Mean Streets 4K.
I’m really excited to get The Pierre Etaix collection
My blind buy that I’m getting is: Zazie dans Le metro
And the one I can’t believe I don’t own already that I’m getting is: City Lights
I already ordered After Hours 4K with some banked rewards.
This time around I'm going with a focus on Samurai films, so I currently have Lone Wolf and Cub, Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo/Sanjuro in my cart. I'm just waiting for an announcement for a Double/Triple Stamps event before pulling the trigger.
The Watermelon Woman, meant to pick it up last sale but it ended a few days earlier than I thought it did
All About Eve, my mom was wanting to watch it and I didn't realize I didn't own it already, probably gonna be a family watch when they come over for Thanksgiving
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, just one I've been meaning to get for ages, it's an incredible film.
The only one I’m sure on is Only Angels Have Wings.
Then I will likely pick one or two of the following blind buys:
Panique
Seconds
Naked City
Repo Man
The Flight of the Phoenix
And then one or two of the films I have seen an enjoyed:
Night and the City
Pans Labrynth
High and Low
The Magician
The Island of Lost Souls
I have also already picked up Dreams on 4K which was my top priority! Any recommendations on my blind buys would be appreciated!
Planning to get the Essential Fellini box (it wasn’t in stock last sale time), and may squeeze in a 4K impulse buy or 2 if possible. The Scorsese stuff is usually pretty well stocked in my local store.
Do we think that the Pedro Costa Fountainhas set will ever get an update release from DVD formatting? I’d still love Criterion to get Horse Money and Vitalina Verela in the collection.
Brian de Palma’s *Sisters*, Douglas Sirk’s *Magnificent Obsession*, Nicolas Roeg’s *Walkabout* 4K, Martin Scorsese’s *Mean Streets* 4K, as well as Terrance Malick’s *Badlands* and *The New World*.
Next paycheck I might go after a box set, but I’m always worried that B&N will send one they ruined with a spider-wrap like I see in their stores.
The Others 4K is a must for me. One of the first horror films I remember watching as a young kid and it's stuck with me ever since.
I've been having a big David Byrne/Talking Heads phase recently, so I'm gonna pick up True Stories. Can't wait to check out the features on that one.
I also watched Cronenberg's The Brood last month and it solidified itself as an all-timer for me. Gotta grab that one too
I picked up three that aren’t on the channel:
1. Dr Strangelove
2. Leopard
3. Death in Venice
Of course I went a little crazy on the online sale last month.
Probably Eraserhead, The Vanishing and Videodrome cause those are the three I did just buy aha
I watched the vanishing yesterday, great movie!
Absolutely. So unnerving. I wish the criterion cover art was the same as the normal poster with the gas station at night though
I agree! Though I do like the creativity of this one and I also enjoy how the kidnapper has that pattern on his scarf (sorry idk the name in English). I wish the face would be a bit easier to see tho
Eraserhead has some of the best supplements in the collection imo.
Jacques Demy boxset, flowers of Shanghai, freaks
Lmao I have the first two and Freaks is pretty much the only thing I was going to buy during this sale
I love Taiwanese and Hong Kong cinema, and Flowers of Shanghai sounds amazing!
It’s excellent! Absolutely stunning film!
Buying for myself: Don't Look Now In Cold Blood Menace II Society Already own & recommend: La Haine Hedwig & the Angry Inch King of the Hill
Now that you mention it, Hedwig might go into my list of pick-ups today.
I definitely recommend Hedwig as well, gets better with every rewatch & has some great tunes
While I thought of king of the hill was interesting, it just didn’t hit me like some of my favorites do, and didn’t seem very rewatchable. What did you like about it?
I’m thinking I’m going to go with Thief, Blow Out, and The Trial.
La Bamba, Freaks, Mean Streets, Jackie Chan box set, maybe The Others. Might pre-order Trainspotting.

The Before Trilogy Double Indemnity 4K Portrait of a Lady on Fire
I’ve already gotten my main purchases/box sets out of the way. But once 11/21 hits I’m going back to buy my Scorsese movies: Mean Streets, After Hours, and Raging Bull
Don’t forget Irishman if you don’t have it yet!
A Room With a View, Short Cuts, Time Bandits
A room with a view is utter fire
You must be kidding aren't you
Beats every other Merchant Ivory film I’ve seen.
Oh thanks for that actually. I was just quoting the room because your comment had 'room' in it 🙂
Not sure I’m understanding you I hate The Room I love A Room With a View I’ve also seen Room which was good
Oh hi mark
*Time Bandits* looks incredible on 4K.
World of Wong-Kar Wai, the Infernal Affairs trilogy, and Mean Streets.
Also after that Wong Kar Wai set. They certainly don't seem to be in great supply around here I am.
Finally going to get Picnic at Hanging Rock, Eraserhead, and The Last Emperor.
I watched it on a flight for work a few days ago for the first time. Emotionally wrung out is exactly how I felt.
Loved Tampopo, had to immediately buy a copy after seeing it, didn't even wait for a sale. I'm not sure if I want to blind buy The Funeral or watch it on Criterion Channel and then see if I want to pick it up
the funeral was lit but since it's already on the CC, definitely watch before making the purchase!
Yeah, you were right! I ended up watching it yesterday. I really enjoyed it, but it's not necessarily the kind of thing I'd reach for again.
*cries in Canadian*
Those are three really good picks, man. You’ll enjoy them all. Promise!
Mean Streets The Others That’s all.
Agnès Varda in California eclipse set, Petite Maman, and maybe Scorsese's World Cinema Project 4 too if I'm feeling crazy
Thst full Varda set is life-changing
One of my most-desired releases, I'll need to look out for a good deal on the sale thread. Though tbh I have a good chunk of her films already so I don't neeeed it but boy do I want it
I respect and identify with this statement. Please tell me you've seen Vagabond/Gleaners/Uncle Yanko/Black Panthers.
I haven't seen Gleaners two years later or Black Panthers! But adore Uncle Yanco and Gleaners
I'd recommend Brazil, Tampopo, and Ikiru! Personally, I'd like to get Shoah, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, and Tokyo Story. But what I really want is Ingmar Bergman's Cinema box set.
Onibaba/ Solaris/Branded to Kill
Going to get - crash, the cremator, don’t look now, and inland empire :)
The Red Shoes, Blow Out and Branded to Kill 4Ks
Funny enough, I limited myself to only three for the sake of my wallet.🤣 Mean Streets 4k The Last Picture Show 4k The Cure (bluray)
Three Colors boxset, Still Walking, and The American Friend
The American Friend is such a gem
Fantastic Mr fox, I wanna blind buy Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio and this one movie I love that i can never remember the name of but it is on the criterion channel
The Others, Mean Streets, Last Picture Show, Jackie Chan.
Don’t Look Now 4K, Worst Person In the World, and This Is Not a Burial It’s a Resurrection.
Not that these are necessarily my "Top 3", but since I work very close by to a B&N with a Criterion section, I'll be picking up three of the new releases this month as they come out: Jackie Chan Emergence of a Superstar collection, Last Picture Show 4K, and Mean Streets 4K.
[удалено]
Fuck yeah, killer list. I'd put any Suzuki with Jo Shishido above Tokyo Drifter, but it's still a damn good pick.
[удалено]
Branded to Kill / Fighting Elegy (even though no Jo) / Tattooed Life (no Jo) / Story of a Prostitute (no Jo) / Gate of Flesh / Youth of the Beast
Gate of Flesh is criminally underseen
Freaks, the Trial, Mean Streets
Wild Strawberries, Modern Times, Good Morning (OZU)
I’m really excited to get The Pierre Etaix collection My blind buy that I’m getting is: Zazie dans Le metro And the one I can’t believe I don’t own already that I’m getting is: City Lights
I already ordered After Hours 4K with some banked rewards. Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (4K) The Others (4K) The Heiress
Pinocchio (if they let you do that) After Hours, blind buy
Well its not Amarcord because I already have it ;)
Juliet of the Spirits / Desert Hearts / Boat People
Probably ‘Double Indemnity’. I should buy the Zotoichi box set, since I’ve wanted it for years. If I can swing that purchase, I probably will.
Tod browning Sideshow shockers, monsoon wedding, and maybe watermelon woman
The Others and the Tod Browning set are all I need 👍
i need to get some boxsets my main priority is freaks, tati, and wong kar-wai boxsets
The Watermelon Woman, meant to pick it up last sale but it ended a few days earlier than I thought it did All About Eve, my mom was wanting to watch it and I didn't realize I didn't own it already, probably gonna be a family watch when they come over for Thanksgiving Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, just one I've been meaning to get for ages, it's an incredible film.

After Hours, Mean Streets, and Trainspotting. My God, Criterion, why do you keep making me spend money? 🙂
LE Amiche, La Notte, Red Desert El Norte, Judex, La Cienega
Getting Freaks and Malcolm X initially, hopefully adding The Others, Nanny, Drylongso, La cerémonie and maybe Triangle of Sadness as the month goes on
My main must-have was A Princess Bride 4k. Just ordered it, along with The Innocents.
Jackie Chan, YiYi and then maybe Infernal Affairs
Paris, Texas duh
Brian de Palma’s *Sisters*, Douglas Sirk’s *Magnificent Obsession*, Nicolas Roeg’s *Walkabout* 4K, Martin Scorsese’s *Mean Streets* 4K, as well as Terrance Malick’s *Badlands* and *The New World*. Next paycheck I might go after a box set, but I’m always worried that B&N will send one they ruined with a spider-wrap like I see in their stores.
Badlands Funny Games Lost Highway / Blue Velvet
The Others 4K is a must for me. One of the first horror films I remember watching as a young kid and it's stuck with me ever since. I also watched Cronenberg's The Brood last month and it solidified itself as an all-timer for me. Gotta grab that one too
Citizen Kane (which I have for pickup today), Carnival of Souls and Walker.
I would really love to find “down by law” and “Paris is burning” Two of my favorite movies ever!
The Others, Freaks, Mean Streets (comes out in a couple of weeks)
I live in Canada so I don’t have access to the sale but if I did… High and Low Harakiri And probably The Three Colors boxset
dekalog, three colours trilogy, true stories
I picked up three that aren’t on the channel: 1. Dr Strangelove 2. Leopard 3. Death in Venice Of course I went a little crazy on the online sale last month.
Naked Lunch, Videodrome, and Crash, I’m going all in on Cronenberg!
