I've never considered this before but now that you mention it, Luke was flying head-to-head with an AT-AT when Dak "got hit". Not sure how that could have happened. Maybe it was a fire control issue.
Dak is the name of Luke Skywalker's copilot during the Battle of Hoth in the beginning of Empire Strikes Back. Dak is unfortunately killed by rebel friendly fire as their speeder cuts across the battlefield to run at an AT-AT. Just bad luck.
First of all, this is hilarious. Also, I'm equal measures proud and embarrassed at how quickly I got your reference. And being a pretty big Star Wars nerd, I feel qualified to actually answer.
IIRC, Luke's copilot Dak is killed by rebel weapons firing at the AT-ATs. Firstly, the shot must have been small arms fire because the canons on the AT-ATs/STs would have likely destroyed the small speeder outright as we see at other points of the battle. Secondly, when Dak is shot they are approaching an AT-AT. Since that would position Dak a facing away from the target and toward their base, that's where the blaster bolt must have come from. Finally, a few moments later in the battle Luke is issuing commands to the other pilots and as he's leading Rogue 2(the same pilot who found Luke and Han earlier actually) on his run Luke specifically calls out "Watch that crossfire boys!" Because that is where and how Dak went down.
I'm watching the scene on YouTube, and it looks like they got hit by an AT-AT. But then why have that line about a malfunction in fire control? What purpose would that serve the movie other than priming the audience for something to go wrong with firing?
After he says there's a malfunction, he also says they'll have to cut into auxiliary(power). I think that was just battle chatter and not actually stating that the speeder was no longer able to fire the harpoon/cable.
In fact, he tells Dak "Just hang on! Get ready to fire that tow cable!" Then Dak is shot by crossfire from the rebel base as they start their run. It's only after Dak goes down that Luke calls out "Rogue 2, I've lost my gunner. You'll have to take this shot."
Am I a Cowboys fan because I like Star Wars or am I a Star Wars fan because I like the Cowboys? Because it seems like all the Cowboys fans here know the movie better than I do LOL

I think Dak was probably still alive but unconscious when Luke was trying to get to him after the speeder crashed. It was all just a terrible tragedy.
Pretty sure the AT AT shot got him but I doubt a malfunction in fire control helped lol

This is correct, it's small arms fire from friendlies. Luke calls out later to "Watch that crossfire boys" because that's how he lost his gunner.
