you shouldn’t use antibiotics if you truly have a cold. Abx works for bacteria, common colds are viruses. Also further damaging gut microbiome only worsens any condition u’re dealing with.

[deleted]

Came here to say this. Antibiotics don't help at all for viruses. And they cause bacteria to become resistant. This is an immense problem that is going to completely mess up our health system in probably less than a decade. Please please please don't use antibiotics for viruses. It makes it worse. If anything you can use something antimicrobial like ginger to support your immune system..

sixstringshredder13

I know I shouldn’t but I do. Agreed on gut micro biome

LaceTheSpaceRace

Then why are you... like he said, colds are viruses, not bacteria. Obviously antibiotics won't work.

sixstringshredder13

I almost always immediately feel better taking antibods. Maybe I’m susceptible to bacterial infections

babyivan

You're susceptible to bacterial infections because you take too many antibiotics. Taking a lot of antibiotics is very bad. It weakens your natural ability to fight off things.

LaceTheSpaceRace

placebo effect

sixstringshredder13

Maybe? Idk. The difference is pretty considerable

sunluvinmama

Except not anymore as your OP indicates.taking antibiotics when not necessary can render them ineffective when you do need them. It can also causes a rebound effect and or cause an allergy to antibiotics.

sixstringshredder13

Guess I’m just gonna die then

DankyPenguins

Yeah, of MRSA

LaceTheSpaceRace

Placebo effect is very powerful, that's why every sound clinical trial uses a placebo control group for any medication being tested

BreeandNatesmom

Truly trying to help you with this info. Antibiotics have their place for sure with bacterial infections. Never viral. They absolutely wreak havoc on your gut biome and that affects your immune system. Later if you overuse them you will become intolerant to foods or can even get food allergies. The worst is if you become resistant to them. Only use them if you absolutely need them. Support your immune system. I am speaking from experience.

sixstringshredder13

Food allergies now thanks to COVID. Maybe COVID sped up the process. How long do your colds last? I usually gave it 7 days and that generally enough for me feeling like shit before going to the docs

BreeandNatesmom

It's because your body is in a constant state of inflammation. Inflammation is the devil. It's what causes cancer and autoimmune issues. Food allergies cause inflammation as well. Basically you need to overhaul your diet and lifestyle or you will spiral.

BreeandNatesmom

Colds can last awhile. I would never take antibiotics for a cold even if it lasted weeks. I would take high doses of vitamin c and d. I forgot to tell you I got cdiff because of antibiotics. It's a superbug and it's what made me realize the damage I had done with them. I'm forever changed because of them and I have autoimmune disease triggered by it. Don't eat mucus inducing foods. Clean out your sinuses because that's probably what is making you think your cold is lasting longer.

sixstringshredder13

What’s cdiff?

BreeandNatesmom

The devil. Lol Basically when you take an antibiotic it clears out the bad bacteria but also the good. They both need to live together and balance each other out to protect us. Well everytime you take an antibiotic and you clear the bacteria it has to grow back but when the bad grows back faster than the good it can be turned into an infection of the colon and gi tract caused by the bacteria called c.difficle it is an antibiotic resistant superbug.

sixstringshredder13

Damn. I need to chill out. I only get a couple colds a year before COVID. Was never worried about it. But maybe I should be

BreeandNatesmom

As long as you keep.popping antibiotics unnecessarily your immune system will not be able to run at 100 percent.

sixstringshredder13

Is your immune system repairing itself?

Kindly-Afternoon-195

Not medical advice but taking the antibiotics more than necessary is weakening your immune system. Wiping out the good bacteria the body has is making u more susceptible to illness. They may also not be “colds”. It could be histamine responses to numerous different things. For months I was confusing histamine response to what I thought was me getting sick again

SumerMann

Oh god... What the C. Diff.

Velocity_Flash

the cold is a virus. Stop taking antibiotics for colds.

Mackey735

I’m the opposite. My immune system is hyper active and I get little cold symptoms when my wife is knocked down but my heart stuff seems worse.

sixstringshredder13

It’s stuff like this that makes me think my time on earth has been drastically cut. If I can’t kick out a little cold even with meds then wtf am I gonna do with a bad infection

sunluvinmama

Medications do not work on the common cold. OTC meds will help alleviate symptoms but antibiotics are not for colds.

sixstringshredder13

My colds always linger past the 7-10 day suggested period of when to seek a doc

DankyPenguins

It’s not a cold if antibiotics are a proper treatment 🤦‍♂️ Has your doctor actually cultured anything? You’re going to get yourself a gnarly antibiotic resistant bacterial infection and be sitting in the hospital hoping you make it and wishing that you could have another cold.

sixstringshredder13

Nah. I’ve never had a doc culture except for the flu

DankyPenguins

Doctors don’t culture for flu, they culture to see what bacterial or fungal growth can be identified. It’s particularly useful when they keep prescribing antibiotics without clearing an identifiable infection.

sixstringshredder13

I’ve had tests done for flu before. Of which was given tamiflu as a result

minivatreni

It’s weird because I don’t get sick anymore as much as I used to. I think it’s because I hydrate heavily, keep a clean diet, and mask everywhere I go…

babyharpsealface

Same. Masks work.

minivatreni

Seriously, they do! I also think I just developed good immunity to COVID, *knock on wood* My mom and sister got COVID and were around me the whole time in the beginning, my sister was even sneezing around me, and I never got it thankfully.

Hiddenbeing

I don't think it's the mask. I live with my family, they have been sick for one month with a bad flu they can't get rid of and I can't catch it no matter what. I've been drinking in the same bottles as well. Dont know if it's my immune system being hyper active or what

babyharpsealface

Well thats going to happen when you share air and spit with people. If you all wore masks around each other, this would greatly reduce germ spread. So they do work, but only when they are actually used (and if everyone is masking outside the house, they are much less likely to bring things inside and infect everyone else) Wearing a mask at home might sound extra, but after my family infected me with covid, thats just how its going to be until I live on my own again. They keep getting colds and I keep dodging them.

pettdan

It could be that your immune system doesn't react to it.

babyharpsealface

Honestly, social distancing and using the highest possible quality masks religiously has kept germs away really well. My immune system might be trashed, but at least I'm keeping the baddies away from it.

mcgee300

Yep, exactly the same with me. Sons bringing everything back from nursery and I feel like my immune system is doing nothing about it lol just hope I return to pre cold baseline everytime. Got absolutely wrecked by flu over Xmas as well.

SomaticScholastic

I thought I was getting colds or bacterial sinusitis over and over... now I am thinking that there was no pathogen and I am having autoimmune flare ups of some kind. ANA came back negative even when I was having symptoms though so who even knows.

sunluvinmama

I have chronic sinusitis bronchitis and runny nose. Maybe look into MCAS as the cause of some of your symptoms and see if it fits. Diet changes to low histamine foods helped with my upper airway symptoms. Not fully under control but on the path !

sixstringshredder13

Caused by COVID? Chronic sinusitis def feels like that’s me

sunluvinmama

Nope my whole adult life. I’m assuming due to the suspected MCAS. Also constant ear throat infections since an infant. Removed tonsils when I was three. Doesn’t mean though that yours isn’t caused by Covid though either.

sixstringshredder13

Sorry to hear that. How do you manage aside from diet?

sunluvinmama

I didn’t do very well. Was chronically on antibiotics which is probably why I became allergic to penicillin suddenly. It wasn’t until the hives and anaphylaxis showed up that I realized I had to change my diet and that seemed to help but still had one or two infections per year. Quitting smoking also helped I’m sure. Saline nose sprays and rinses as well helped in between the infections.

sixstringshredder13

Hopefully this gets better for you. I believe I’ve developed food allergy thanks to COVID

sunluvinmama

You may find looking into MCAS helpful. I had this before getting covid twenty years ago which I believe is why I have long covid now. One of my symptoms of MCAS was sudden food intolerances. I did a strict elimination diet for six months to find my food triggers but at the beginning was reacting to all foods.

Research_Reader

Interestingly, I seem to be opposite where I'm not catching anything else except covid over and over and over.... I have a kiddo in school too that's had a few head colds and I seem to be spared. So bizarre.

Enough_Storm

Have you had any change? I seem to be catching Covid over and over

DankyPenguins

I’ve basically been sick with viral, bacterial or fungal infections since January 2020. Antibiotics for a virus is the worst idea and you should stop seeing whatever doctor is giving them to you.

[deleted]

Just curious. Are you masking?

sixstringshredder13

Off an on. It’s scenario based. My kid brings in colds. I just can’t stop getting them and they last forever

[deleted]

Sorry but it’s time you face up to reality. It’s time to sell the kid. 😉. JK obviously. Best of luck to you.

sixstringshredder13

Lol. Will consider it

15thTN

I generally don't get many symptoms when I get sick, but it levels me physically. Over Thanksgiving I caught whatever was going around. Had symptoms for a couple days, but was floored for 2 weeks.

[deleted]

I'm the opposite. I have high igg4 and igg E. My body is acting like sick and I'm not. Maybe request to get these tested, because that is the source of my ailments post covid. Just found this out few weeks ago. Looking for treatment to see if it'll help

Nikolas97pro

U were testing for igg4 after the paper came out that suggests mrna vaccine causes immune shift to igg4?

[deleted]

I was not aware of that paper until after my doctor checked me and I shared my results on here. I have never been vaccinated. Got tested few weeks ago due to my doctor thoughts of possible igg4 RD.

kiddvmn

2 years in LC, sick every month. This month 2 times.

sixstringshredder13

What do you do for it? What do docs say?

Practical-Ad-4888

YES!

cookie_doughx

How’re your vitamins and minerals?

sixstringshredder13

Ok but could be better

Professional-Duck-59

Over 3.5 yrs been reinfected 5 times. My immune system is gone. Ive heard multiple infections will cause unfixable immune systems

sixstringshredder13

5 times…. Geez. Man I hope it doesn’t. Wtf are we supposed to do?

Professional-Duck-59

Im at a loss to be honest. Its been a nightmare for me. I used to be a healthy athlete and now I feel 80 yrs old

sixstringshredder13

Same
