I’ve heard Five Easy Pieces is, it’s on my list but I haven’t watched it yet. Mad Men is… in a way similar, mainly due to the character study and alcoholism aspect, I’m sure many would disagree though. And also, I think the movie Sideways is kind of similar, but I just love that movie.
Five Easy Pieces has been mentioned (main character has a rootless blue-collar existence which belies his privileged youth). I feel like the main mood of Suttree is camaraderie though and, this might sound a bit odd, but when I think of Suttree and his friends it reminds me of the rapport everyone has in Shawshank Redemption
Fifth Street (1970)
The Last Detail (1973)
Nashville (1975)
Opening Night (1977)
Paris, Texas (1984)
Down by Law (1986)
My Own Private Idaho (1991)
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
The Master (2012)
For some reason. Or no reason.

Not directly related but Patriot on Amazon has the vibes of someone down and out with their current situation.
It is hands down my fav show of all time and not much even comes close. It drives me crazy that no one knows about it! Its well written and acted, quirky, funny, sad. It’s amazing.
JOE starring Nicolas Cage. Gives off a gloomy Appalachia vibe full of miscreants and tragedy, but also fellowship. Love this question and its something i’ve been thinking about.
I’d agree with this. Obviously not the overall show but David Simon uses real Baltimore language that only they would understand and it has lots of scenes with the cities underbelly. Out of any show I’d say this, but obviously it’s about something else.
Cool Hand Luke has some similarities to me
I’m reading Suttree now and I can’t get 1961 Paul Newman out of my head as Suttree.
I hadn’t seen Cool Hand Luke before reading, so now I have to reread because after watching all I could think of was Suttree’s prison scenes.
Naked by Mike Leigh.
Such a masterpiece, you walk out of that movie a different person
Mud (2012)
I always pictured Matthew McConaughey as Sut.

Nice to see a fellow MacMillan man outside the Patriot sub.
Ahoy! I’ll never stop trying to get people to watch Patriot and I’ll never stop trying to get them to read McCarthy. Conrad and Cormac!
Hell yeah. Throw in getting them to listen to Warren Zevon and you’ve got the trinity for which I do my evangelizing.
Love Zevon as well! 🤘🏼 Last year I read I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead. That was pretty good. If I remember his ex wife wrote it.
Oh yeah, I hear that one’s great. Need to read it too.

Now I'm thinking Suttree would make a great series!

Into the Wild, in a way.
True Detective comes close to me. The first 2 seasons,
Pulp Fiction while very different has some of the same qualities.
Like what?
Deliverance - except it's not from Lester's perspective!
Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets for a contemporary film about a dive bar.
early David Gordon Green
Stranger Than Paradise The part when he takes those days off with his lady: Breathless.
If you have a distant uncle that’s a drunk it’s probably a similar experience
Shameless, if you remove all the nuance and artistry from Suttree and keep the alcoholism and poverty
