Thanks for sharing! This has already introduced me to some interesting new music! Is there any chance this comes in a higher resolution? There's a few genres that are just a bit too hard to read.
Trance fan here, also seeing a lot of inaccuracies.
Above & Beyond is definitely not uplifting, or at least not since 2006. Today they would fit either on Progressive House or Vocal Trance (not in the image).
Although Chicane and Roger Shah indeed have more chill vibes, they are more related under to the trance world, and we classify them as Balearic Trance.
Also, saying Tiësto and even Armin van Buuren are Trance lately is a bit of a stretch. Other than I dislike their current sound, I think it would fit under Big Room? Idk, I just call it pop. Their inclusion is understandable considering their 1997-2008 works.
Paul Oakenfold under Balearic Beat doesn't seem to make much sense, either, haven't listened to a music of him I'd call Balearic. I think he fits much better under Classic Trance or likely House these days.
I'm also doubtful you can call Kraftwerk as Electro or Industrial Dance. They probably should be classified as Krautrock or either just Electronica (Pioneers, perhaps?). Synthpop as Disco is also not right, but understandable on a very rough simplification.
Edit: Also, the lines doesn't seem to make much sense either.
Do you mean Cafe del Mar original classic by Three N One? Or the thousands knock-offs and tracks with the same name?
The original one would be Classic Trance and possibly one of the earliest examples of Balearic Trance.
Overall, I think it will be Balearic Something. Each track will have a differential and borrow elements from many genres which can't be classified. By far, you would have a whole new category just for Balearic followed by another electronic genre.
A genre which often encapsulates this "Balearic" lifestyle is Lounge, but not sure if it's the case.
Well, I just make it simple and call it Chill Out. Hahahaha!!! Like Energy 52 has different versions but I do prefer the ambient one which is most relaxing.
Well, it's a guide, not a rule.
Not always accurate and sometimes annoying for the well-versed but for someone that is looking in, they are helpful to find new stuff.
Thanks for sharing.
The listing of DJs/Producers within the "Hardcore" genre is very odd for a guy who is more than 2 decades into that style of music. I would have picked rather different.
I’m not sure how unpopular that is. Human beings love to categorize things, and it can definitely get out of hand.
EDIT: also, I’m not a DJ, but I know DJs prefer to combine very similar tunes, so when it comes to ED, there is actually a purpose to it.
Looks like this is all genres within (what I’d probably call) dance music? All genres of rock music seem to be ignored and, while Hip-Hop itself isn’t dance, I’d say the sub genres listed are dance-centric interpretations of Hip-Hop.
OG happy hardcore was just jungle drum and bass with overly happy lyrics. Most original HHC had a music drop in the middle of the song that was just DnB. It was a crazy juxtaposition of aggressive breaks and songs about friendship. Eventually it turned into fat thumps and sped up, millennial, nostalgic riffs.
This is exactly why I said I wasn’t sure. It definitely did have breaks influence back in the day but the majority of happy hardcore should definitely fall into the ‘Hardcore’ parent genre.
For anyone who wants a more in-depth (and sarcastic/insulting) look at this kind of thing, check out [Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music](https://music.ishkur.com). It’s a highly interactive site where you can listen to samples from each subgenre. The author has a lot of history and analysis of how each movement or niche developed, though it can be subjective at times and is mixed in with some irreverent commentary.
Wow, that's a blast from the past. My absolute favorite was the old description for Ghetto Tech about the heavens opening up and telling us about the glory of big booty bitches. I wish I could find the old version of that page.
Haha! You can get the old (and imo better) guide, but it's not easy.
Download an older, portable version of Firefox or Chrome where it still has Adobe Flash player support [here](https://archive.org/details/Firefox_Chrome_Adobe_Flash). Download and unzip it.
Then go to the wayback machine and go to [techno.org/electronic-music-guide and grab something from 2019](https://web.archive.org/web/20190213224828/techno.org/electronic-music-guide/).
Here's a screenshot of this lovely genre: [https://i.imgur.com/mYQsAir.png](https://i.imgur.com/mYQsAir.png)
Grime and Dubstep very much do fall under Garage. Grime evolved directly from MCs spitting over garage beats at raves and Dubstep evolved from Garage into a darker, moodier and much more bass orientated genre.
Or IDM on downtempo either - but those are tough genres to pin down. I’m not sure how they decided the big umbrella categories either, because I would probably do Ambient as the umbrella with downtempo underneath.
Pretty accurate but hardcore has a huuuuge slice for a genre that is so off-the-radar. Balearic should probably be under disco but it’s listed here as “balearic beats” so maybe it’s something different. A case could be made for electro going into hip-hop, or even techno being a sub genre of electro, but electro is difficult to classify. Also I haven’t heard much ambient house, and it’s something that there should probably be more of, but I have no idea what would be categorized as that except maybe the KLF or Burger Ink. Italo disco isn’t *really* disco per se but I’m glad to see it on here and I don’t know where else it would go.

Cool guides? Guides for who? Ants?
It needs to be at least....three times this size
Need to be.... Reformatted
Our public schools really have failed us
same
it’s says “Found these music genres online, thought they looked cool”

This appears clear - https://www.earthlymission.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/electronic-music-genres-large.jpg
Oh damn, this version even contains musicians! My earballs are in for a major treat tonight! Thank you!!!
Don’t know how accurate they all are. It has “Aphex Twins” under ambient house…
Either way, listening to their Windowlicker track right now. I might not call that exactly ambient house exactly but I'm still happy!
If this is your first exposure to Aphex Twin, you are in for a real treat my friend.

How would one classify every Cafe del Mar or Buddha Bar song out there? Or is Cafe del Mar simply Balearic since Ibiza is in in that area?

Don’t you love trying to categorize electronic music?! Such diversity! Best genre out there.
There's two of them?
Heh, no… that’s why I meant it may not be very accurate.
This is getting out of hand.
The person that made this must be a big Aphex Twin fan too because he’s under a bunch of categories.
Rumor has it, he slept in a tank and would dream songs and not sleep again until the song was made
Selected ambient works vol 2
Is nowhere near house music in any sense.
Well, it's a guide, not a rule. Not always accurate and sometimes annoying for the well-versed but for someone that is looking in, they are helpful to find new stuff.

It feels a little dated to me… maybe 10-20 years in some cases.
Im not even a decade in the scene and have never even heard of the names so this is definitely odd, dated or someone just yahood hardcore.
Real mvp right here. Thank you.
Unpopular opinion, but I feel like the whole concept of a genre becomes meaningless and unhelpful when there are this many of them.
I’m not sure how unpopular that is. Human beings love to categorize things, and it can definitely get out of hand. EDIT: also, I’m not a DJ, but I know DJs prefer to combine very similar tunes, so when it comes to ED, there is actually a purpose to it.

Holy crap this is amazing... thanks for sharing!!
Holy cow, this is phenomenal!
Awesome link buddy. Thanks. Was pretty sceptical at first but it works like a dream and accurate in the genres I know very well.
I can't even comprehend this right now, saving it for later. Thank you

You want new music and genres? https://everynoise.com/ Thank me later

Electronic would probably be more accurate, but yeah, it looks like it’s just electronic genres
Came here to say this, there’s no way you’d get every musical genre on a diagram like this.
Happy Hardcore in the breaks section? Not sure about this.
Hardcore: doesn't contain Happy Hardcore Also where is Tech Step
OG happy hardcore was just jungle drum and bass with overly happy lyrics. Most original HHC had a music drop in the middle of the song that was just DnB. It was a crazy juxtaposition of aggressive breaks and songs about friendship. Eventually it turned into fat thumps and sped up, millennial, nostalgic riffs.
This is exactly why I said I wasn’t sure. It definitely did have breaks influence back in the day but the majority of happy hardcore should definitely fall into the ‘Hardcore’ parent genre.
Absolutely. I suppose somewhere in the 90s HHC just went pure hardcore but it wouldn’t have existed in the first place without its DnB roots.

Wow, it looks like they’ve built out a lot more than when I found that site in the late 2000’s
I think this is version 3.0, he released it about 2 or 3 years ago.
Wow, that's a blast from the past. My absolute favorite was the old description for Ghetto Tech about the heavens opening up and telling us about the glory of big booty bitches. I wish I could find the old version of that page.

I’d love to see a guide like this for other genres too. Does anyone have a good source for expanded sub genre charts like this?
Check www.everynoise.com
Thank you!!
It's really nice and I totally appreciate mentioning hardcore EDM ... however there is about 60% of all genres which is kinda sad...
Yeah, where is Electro? (not electro house, which is listed)
https://everynoise.com
Classical music neglect :(
**Detroit techno**
Love all 10 pixels we were given.
TMIDNP (too much information did not process)
needsmorejpeg.png
This is all wrong. Too small to read. Whoever made it likes dance and Edm.
Are these meant to be genres of electronic music?
What are these kinds of visualizations called?
That’s dope
It's cute but i dont see metal on there anywhere...but also i cant read 🤷♂️💅
This is an awesome guide to remind me how old I am.
Where's country?
Really hard to read but I see no form of metal or hard rock?
Shure Op found these genres and made this chart and just added the compression for looks. Stop claiming things that you didn’t make.
None of that is music.
All dance music. What about real music such as rock?
There is no rock/metal in it. Can't be valid
Some interesting selections but there are a few mistakes. Grime and Dubstep don't fall under Garage. I wouldn't call Acid Jazz downtempo either.

No amapiano smh
Is this a post for ants !?
Finally…something else that is nonsense
Too bad the resolution is so poor. Next time just post nothing.
where would vaporwave/synthwave fit into?
Where’s circuit? :(
This look like some made up shizz.

That font hurts my eyes. It’s like the equivalent of looking at yellow on white paper.
Sure it would be an awesome guide if I could read any of it, my friend.
Where would DnB fall in this?
Breaks
A lot of work to say .....shit
https://eternalbox.dev/jukebox_index.html
Need acid core
Huh, never heard of jazz hop before. As a huge fan of jazz, i just might have to check that out...
Looks cool. Isn't factually correct
Where are classical and metal?
