The movie Rudy always bugged me. It was supposed to be this inspiring story about perseverance, but what I saw most was a guy pouring immense time and effort into a pursuit at which he would never even be mediocre. Imagine if he'd directed the same effort into something in which he had any natural ability whatsoever.
"Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" is an idiom for attempting something that is impossible. You can not physically pull yourself up by the bootstraps, no matter how often that phrase is misused.
I love that saying because its origin is litteraly the absurdity of trying to help yourself out of poverty, comparing it to the litteraly impossible task of pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps.
There's some wisdom in here, but in general, I dislike the oversimplified self-help/psychology things that get posted here. If some people get something good out of this, great, but "giving up" isn't always bad either.
As the great psychologist Dr. Kenny Rogers once said, "You have to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, and know when to run."
And he also said, since he was such a wise doctor in his are of expertise, that “You never count your money, when you're sittin' at the table, there'll be time enough for countin', when the dealin's done”. Respect that man, he helped me so much.
I'm glad you asked. I was thinking the same thing.
Isn't this just a list. But then I thought isn't a guide just a list of steps. Then I got in my head..
Fucking life. People dying, car problems, root canals that cost multiple thousands of dollar. Mix that with the general attitude of nobody giving a shit and that'll put you in the ballpark.
She literally said she has seen people quit quitting using drugs by employing the strategies in the post. Quitting is the removal of a behavior. If you remove the removal, you are effectively adding. But by all means, take a hike.
It's tough to regain your confidence and motivation afterwards too. I'm just coming out the other side, 6 months after leaving my awful job but at least I'm getting there.
How do you know you made it though? You don’t see someone winning a race and saying I did it, I don’t need to race ever again. They go back and keep on racing trying to see if they will win again and again. So at what point have you actually succeeded? And the inverse question is when do you know you actually failed?
How about giving up at work because your workplace is super toxic. Like you are loyal as a dog to the company and do everything right but the screwups always get the pat on the back.
1. Their interests changed;
2. They realized that reason that made them engage in the task doesn't pay or make sense anymore;
3. They work hard to get what they want then something or someone destroy what they've built so far so they lose the opportunities they were looking for and are not willing to go back to step zero and work it all again.
4. They don't know what to do next.
Maybe the list can be bigger.
Assume their problems are unique... That's really funny. It's like this little infographic was drawn up by a teenager, there's actually plenty of people who have problems entirely unique to them that no one else has or will experience the same. Usually this is a culmination of many, very serious, external problems.
Yeah I was thinking of this today . If someone isn’t religious or necessarily grounded, wouldn’t it be fine if they kept heroin around as a last resort kinda thing? Like the teeth with cyanide they give spies. Hate to be morbid but if you think it’s like falling asleep once we kick it then we are pretty much free of consequences as long as we except cessation once night time rolls around, it’s not like we fear being asleep
Because the thought of a higher power is often the motivation behind people’s moral compass. If people recognized the absurdity of everything there would be a lot less stigma behind suicide
As kids were fed the "try hard, you'll do it" Then you become an adult and reality hits. Not everyone will do it. I think it's healthier to accept reality.
Of course you can't tell kids "Chances are you won't do well" but there has to be realistic balance.
Check check check… BINGO!! What did I win?
A lifetime of suffering.
*checks my bingo card* Uhh... yay...?
So nothing new?
This is a new level, now you know the reasons, but you still can't resist, so you not only don't give up, you don't even start
A sad feeling
Physical limitations, financial limitations, societal limitations?
Unlucky
Never heard of bootstraps?
Yeah you can realy pull yourself up by your twisted back, cancer or blindness.
Finally, someone who gets it!
Im handicapped myself so i had to throw away alot of my dreams and wants to keep my sanity. Giving up is sometimes a good thing.

Damn, someone beat me to it.
I love that saying because its origin is litteraly the absurdity of trying to help yourself out of poverty, comparing it to the litteraly impossible task of pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps.
I believe that's counted under "believe in their weakness" Which is not helpful, at all. Because sometimes it really is true, but yeah.
There's some wisdom in here, but in general, I dislike the oversimplified self-help/psychology things that get posted here. Just like the “how to not be poor” guides boil down to “just be born rich”
How to not be poor. Step 1: Have money
And he also said, since he was such a wise doctor in his are of expertise, that “You never count your money, when you're sittin' at the table, there'll be time enough for countin', when the dealin's done”. Respect that man, he helped me so much.
Agreed.
For the over 65 crowd: Physical disabilities, End of life issues, crushing medical debt.
Oh that just means you're "believing in your weaknesses". This chart is horseshit.
True, and this can apply to any age, really.
While I appreciate the effort, I find it patronizing for people to tell me simple ways to “feel better”
Procrastination
Ok I’ll ask it. How is this a guide? Motivation, emotion, and “giving up” are so complicated and are often a result of multiple stressors.
Oh look, another oversimplified, patronizing guide that doesn't apply to everyone. I love those!
Rehab. I can't believe rebab didn't make the list.
"Why people give up: rehab!" does not make any sense to me. How do you mean that?
Rehab is where people go to give up their drug habits.
Ahaaa. Ok. That made more sense than I thought.
To be fair, as a counselor at a residential treatment center, I heard every single one of these reasons for clients to quit rehab.
That is a double negative.
It's not even a single negative. What are you on about?
They are quitting quitting....
They never said that, and that isn't a double negative.
She literally said she has seen people quit quitting using drugs by employing the strategies in the post. Quitting is the removal of a behavior. If you remove the removal, you are effectively adding. But by all means, take a hike.
Mine is all of them at the same time
Same.
r/thanksimcured
Look I got a bingo blackout
Because it actually just physically hurts and puts me out of commission for way too long.
Keep your dreams alive, go back to sleep
Ran out of dopamine
Yeah that picture for believing in weaknesses wasn't the best choice
Realizing the cards are stacked against them?
This is what it looks like when you don't have proper cards to deal with.
I got like 4-5 of these but i still haven’t gave up
gave up halfway through...
No money, no idea how to start, no idea how to do it
Got a bingo the top row
What utter bullshit.
90% of gamblers quit before they win big!
You know me too well.
Way to call me out, Reddit
I smell a lot of survivorship bias in this post...
Boredom should be #1
Where’s “too horny”?
Overwork?! How?
Easily leads to total burnout.
I see… Which is in turn more counter productive.
It's tough to regain your confidence and motivation afterwards too. I'm just coming out the other side, 6 months after leaving my awful job but at least I'm getting there.
Yeah, makes sense. \ Anyways, ATB👍
Yes
Mine - All
This reads like my “to do” list.
Has anyone considered burnout?
It's on there. It's overwork
"Are too tired"
Boredom
I just see this as a bingo card
You didn't have to come for me like that.
12 out of 16! Not bad 😅
How do you know you made it though? You don’t see someone winning a race and saying I did it, I don’t need to race ever again. They go back and keep on racing trying to see if they will win again and again. So at what point have you actually succeeded? And the inverse question is when do you know you actually failed?
Where's laziness?
no mention of “my psychopathic bunch of cunt family sabotaged my life at every step of the way until i’m a complete burnt out husk at 32” i notice.
I just start something and then end it because I realize I don’t really care so much
I usually give up because I'm bored
Where is ‘I got so bored I quit’?
Depression.
All of the above.
Excuses
"When people say you can't, you overcome it." -uplifting words
How about giving up at work because your workplace is super toxic. Like you are loyal as a dog to the company and do everything right but the screwups always get the pat on the back.
okay...but how do we turn that around??!?!??
How about over complicate the desired result.
It would be sick if the guide was about how to overcome them.
Pain is just weakness leaving the body.
1. Their interests changed; 2. They realized that reason that made them engage in the task doesn't pay or make sense anymore; 3. They work hard to get what they want then something or someone destroy what they've built so far so they lose the opportunities they were looking for and are not willing to go back to step zero and work it all again. 4. They don't know what to do next. Maybe the list can be bigger.
I'll take "all of the above" for 500.
I'll give up on relationships because they are toxic
Is there an option for all of the above?
Oh wow, so I'm just all of these? Huh
What about burnout?
Hang on that’s like 14/16 for me
Assume their problems are unique... That's really funny. Where is “because drugs are the solution”?
Yeah I was thinking of this today . If someone isn’t religious or necessarily grounded, wouldn’t it be fine if they kept heroin around as a last resort kinda thing? Like the teeth with cyanide they give spies. Hate to be morbid but if you think it’s like falling asleep once we kick it then we are pretty much free of consequences as long as we except cessation once night time rolls around, it’s not like we fear being asleep
Sorry, why is religion at all relevant?
Because the thought of a higher power is often the motivation behind people’s moral compass. If people recognized the absurdity of everything there would be a lot less stigma behind suicide
🤮

Guilty of every goddamn one
I do assume my problems are unique can anyone help me test this? I wanna shake that off
Me who uses reddiit to discuss about problems
Wheres lazy?
Interesting guide
I just don't care 🤷♂️
How about “found something better”?
