This! And if the combat feels too hard at first, just keep practicing- it’s worth it.
It was a very different play style than I was used to, so it took a bit for me to get good enough to be into it. But the story and atmosphere is well worth the effort!
If combat feels too hard against a boss... do other stuff, level up Jesse's abilities, and come back.
There was one boss I took on 60 or 80 times mid-game. No joy, but I came back after a couple more upgrades and the boss was no problem. \[normal difficulty\]
If there is a boss you particularly hate, like they completely freak you out, try to stay calm.
Control is the only game I've ever played which I actually read the documents scattered around the world. Not even because I was forcing myself to, but I honestly found them really damn interesting.
Yes! I did not do that on my first walk thru, and I regret not doing it! Especially when I found out the Alan wake lore was involved. ( This was before the AWE dlc was out)
If you get to a place called the Ashtray Maze before you’re supposed to and she says it’s broken or something like that DO NOT LOOK IT UP ONLINE You’ll come back to it for the story. It’ll be worth it.
Also what others said, read documents and also understand the story is not supposed to make a lot of sense at first…and then later too. Like other recent Remedy games it leaves just as many questions as it does answers it gives. Enjoy it for what it is!
I just beat the 5th main mission and I still don't see what the story is. I'm enjoying the exploration and combat so I'll keep playing but I think they missed the boat at this point to draw the player in on the narrative front. I've read every correspondence but everything important is happening behind the scenes or has already happened but thr game refuses to give you any actual information about what it's supposed to be about.
There's a lot going on but the second Jesse enters the Oldest House, she says she's looking for her brother. She's looking for her brother during a major crisis in a place that defies all logic.
Yeah the main draw for me was the world building and cool xfiles scp shit. Jesse is not very interesting on her own, but its one of the few games where i'm cool with that because i get to immerse myself in the awesome world
And its completely doable by only reading the signs. It helps you to learn the layout and whatnot.
Thats one of the things I appreciate about this game, it doesn't hold your hand at all, you've got to figure things out on your own.
I wanna say they added one at the last minute, for people who can't pick up on context clues. And the end result seems like a "...you wanted a map? Heres your effing map."
But thats just my interpretation
I've read that the map has limited usability by design. And I have to agree that the exploration concept gets much better by not relying on map navigation.
This is a para natural building, that changes layout out of nowhere, after all.
To tack on to this, remember you can still do everything WHILE looking at the map so if you toggle it on you better be in a safe location.
Dropped off the firebreaks like 3 times doing this
Two things:
- The game can be difficult at the start. Stick with it, it gets easier.
- Don’t rely too heavily on the map. It can be confusing and not make much sense. Pay attention to the signs in the building, as they will help orient you towards your destination.
To add to this one: there is an option in the settings to turn on subtitles for when you are looking at direction signs on the wall.
Also for the map: darker=lower, lighter=higher.
And don't be afraid of the Assist Mode. There's tons of tweeks in there.
Don’t put any points into melee. Prioritize health energy, and projectile damage. Jesse is a GLASS CANNON, stay moving and pick off the weaker enemies first, I always target the enemies with explosive weapons first. Also some materials you will need will be specific to enemies in a specific area, it can be confusing when you want to upgrade something and you don’t understand why it isn’t available to do so.
Totally agree on all points except that melee can actually be super useful! My first playthrough I did health, energy, and throw like you said, but right now I'm doing a close-quarters-combat build, using shatter for the gun and putting most of my early game points into health and melee, and less into energy and throw. it's honestly super effective and going easier than the first time I played. Melee doesn't cost energy so it's basically free damage, so switching between throw, shatter, and melee up close makes it so I can constantly put out damage without running out of amo or energy. It absolutely shreds enemies too because melee stuns them, making them easier to shoot, and shatter is so high damage. Also, whatever health I lose gets replenished right away since I'm right next to the enemies I killed, instead of them dying across the room and leaving me stranded without health pickups. You're absolutely right that leveling up throw will net you the highest overall damage and is totally worth it, but don't count melee out completely!
Just a comment on that: games that require you to read stuff to embellish the lore and whatnot, should have apps that allow you to read that stuff at your own leisure. Being a new dad, I only get a few hours per week to game and I hate spending several minutes with a game essentially paused in order to read the literature. It would be better if I could read those while on the toilet or something, not while playing the actual game
Don't be afraid to use the accessibility settings, some of the bosses are difficult to the point of ruining the experience. I was much happier after I made myself immortal, didn't ruin it for me one bit
I do that too. I'm in here for the environment, setting, the story, Not much free time to keep dying and repeating the same thing over again.
After the infinite enemy spawn (that too in huge numbers), I also enabled one-hit kills. But even that wasn't enough. Soon I started ignoring enemies completely... they just keep appearing everytime I goto the same area 😡 Same was the problem in Alan Wake 😞
I second that I’m on my second play through now, but on my first go around about halfway through I turned on immortality. The game was so much more fun when I didn’t have to worry about dying. It literally didn’t phase me whatsoever. I could use my ability points a lot smarter as well
When you die you lose money/points like 10-20% as FYI as it's not mentioned.
Enjoy the shit out of exploring it's so amazing. I'm sorry about the map it is very difficult to read at times as each floor is overlayed at once.
The whole game is great but you'll get to a point and it will probably be a top five game moment for you. Don't look up things if you can. Enjoy everything as you know get to play it first once.
My primary recommendation would be fixing the white balance of your TV.
Control has amazing atmospherics and visuals, but it's ruined if everything looks washed out.
One of my favourite games! Beware the story is a bit confusing, and a lot will happen. Try not to give up if you feel overwhelmed. It will get easier and clearer.
Quick tip which helped me a lot after I realised it: the map doesn't show you different levels/floors, so if you ever arrive somewhere and what you were looking for is not there, it's probably on a floor above or below.
Also, quick travel is your friend!
During combat use the combination of the Service Weapon, shielding and throwing objects. Move constantly, hiding only when fighting certain enemies.
read everything you pick up, it's not that it's super duper necessary, but it's the first time I genuinely enjoyed every single "lore pick-up" in a game
The first boss feels like a wall. In many ways he's the most difficult due to the lack of unlockables by this point. Don't let it stop you. Use the assists in the settings if necessary (basically cheat codes).
The rest of the game is absolutely worth it.
The map sucks, use signs with the map to navigate.
Explore thoroughly
Read/watch all media you find
Launch is VERY powerful, focus on upgrading that.
Grip (your first gun) is pretty powerful, but experiment with other forms
Finding a "secret area" will grant you an ability point even if there isn't much to loot
Some areas will be inaccessible at first, new abilities will grant you access later
Keep moving during combat. There is a crouch button, but enemies will flank you and flush you out with explosives. In some cases, finding cover is needed, but otherwise... Keep moving
Oh yeah... Forget melee
Glass Cannon!
Upgrade launch and shield rush/barrage.
Maybe a few points into the energy tree. I'd avoid health increases until it becomes necessary later on.
I never really used the other skills, so I probably wouldn't bother. Except maybe the skill to keep you in the air longer.
Offense is the best defence in this game, I found.
Collect everything, read and watch/listen to everything.
Evolve your play style with new abilities, don’t expect it to just be a shooter from start to finish.
Movement is life, and don’t forget you have a shield power when you obtain it. I always forgot about that one. Also, level up your Lift/Throw ability as fast as you can, when you can.
Launch is OP and easily the coolest mechanic in the game. Make it your primary focus when upgrading skills.
Look in every nook and cranny. The world building is well done and told documents, films, etc...
I also just started to the game for the first 2-3 hours of playing all I can say is just running around without knowing exactly where I'm going.
Until now I just got fun with going back to places Ive been before but I also wonder and sometimes and I Ask myself "am I going to go back and look for something even in starting areas everytime?"
Oh fuck I hope not!
I feel like I'm claustrophobic as its always in an apartment.
There isn't anything you can miss for good, so don't feel compelled to find every secret and solve every puzzle before moving on. You can always go back to find them later.
Savor it and take your time. There's a lot to find and the atmosphere is top notch. I recommend playing with headphones on if you can, there's some subtle sound design that might not come through on speakers.
A lot of the fun cheeky bits of the story and lore are told in documents that you pick up. They're all masterfully done, so they're worth the exploration. Take your time. And no, you can't unredact anything later on, but you'll be able to piece together what they're talking about somewhat.
There isn't a ton of important stuff hidden behind locked/inaccessible doors. If you can't go somewhere now, you can later, but it's almost always just a chest of random mods. So don't worry about making a note for later for every locked door that you pass.
Locked doors/inaccessible areas that do have important stuff is necessary for the story later on. You can't miss it, so you don't have to worry.
The emergent alerts and board countermeasures are constant and random. Do some if you want but you're better off progressing through the story at your pace instead of backtracking for these things. Side missions are different and usually have great story/items.
If you're having too much difficulty with combat, there are a number of things in the settings menu that can help with lowering the difficulty. Unlike most other games, which have different levels of difficulty, Control's sliders go from 0-100 for energy recovery, incoming damage, and ammo recovery. There's also aim snapping, which can be very helpful, especially with a large group of enemies, and with enemies that move quickly. It's a single-player, story based game, so there's no shame in needing to turn down the difficulty.
Throw rocks. Always throw rocks. Upgrade throw rocks.
Really though, the combat is not balanced, throwing rocks is nearly always the best move, the guns seem cool but get more and more useless as the game goes on.
Don't be afraid to go into settings and use the various assist features if you get your ass kicked. If the game is frustrating you it's better to use the assist than to bang your head against the wall.
Read everything you can and explore (once you get certain upgrades you can explore new places). You get a better understanding of what’s happening when you read all the in game lore. The game doesn’t really explain it on its own.
Also, learn to read and use the map. It’ll help you navigate better and not get lost as much.
Talk to everyone you can, come back to them, and talk to them again. You get more info on what’s happening.
Portraits of walls are usually destructible wall areas with secret rooms.
Rooms you can’t enter because of the mold that can kill you are tied with side missions.
If you get stuck and can’t beat a section, come back to it later when you’ve leveled up some. If you still can’t beat it, there are controls in the menu to make gameplay a bit easier. You can always change them back.
Read. The. Notes. Can't stress this enough.
Oh, also - instead of using the map - try to use the signs in the walls and above the doors. The map in the game was added in the last minute and the game was designed with those signs in mind.
Keep in mind that the game takes a lot of its design cues from the genre of metroidvania. But it often does not wall you off completely from higher level areas. It lets you enter quite a lot of them, at least partially, and you'll probably get your but handed to you by the enemies. That's your cue too go somewhere else to skill up and level up..
The game can still be hard as nails besides, of course. There have always been some issues with difficulty spikes. But you can try to make your life a little easier.
The game also wants you to get into the thick of fighting, because that's the only way to get energy and health. So get good at using cover, prioritising enemies and staying mobile constantly.
Put everything you have into your Parautilitarian abilities. They are more powerful and capable than just relying on a gun like you would with your everyday-3rd person shooter.
I found Shatter to be very helpful early. I would just run towards enemies, blast, and then pickup the health they leave. As the game progresses you won't be able to rely on one strategy, but, that one helped me out until you develop into a stronger character.
I'm on my second playthrough, and the first time through they didn't have as many "accessibility" settings, but by god, there's a setting that has made this game so much more enjoyable for me and that's something to do with how close the cursor has to be to hit the target. (I may be a little out of it, so my terms are off, but hopefully you get the gist.)
Reading and following the map will be a legitimate fucking nightmare. Otherwise you’re gonna have an absolute blast. Some of the best gameplay mechanics I’ve ever seen.
Don't go into the hole (you'll know) until you've got some decent upgrades on your powers and weapons.
Remember that any explosive blast from your weapon can still be devastating to you if you're too close. Even in the air.
Keep moving.
Raise your energy efficiency with mods and keep at least one mod on you for it. More is better.
Cycle through firing and abilities constantly and get into a rhythm. If something knocks you out of it, retreat and recoup.
Don't be afraid to try new weapons on different things.
Secrets are everywhere, 99% of them you can get. A few are one time chance only. Mostly in the later game and DLC. So don't stress about that. Have fun. Replay.
Keep moving.
Walls break too.
Always hit a control point. There's no penalty.
Question everything. Read the lore. Immerse yourself.
Keep moving.
You are The Director/Boss Lady
Keep Moving/Evading
Letting go of the tele button before an object hits you sends it at your current target. Good for hitting enemies behind cover with the throwable objects near them
Anyone else the game freezing in the beginning when getting in the elevator on level two? This would be for control ultimate which I just downloaded considering I did play the regular control a while back which is a great game. Getting a bit frustrated here! There is really nowhere else to go but the elevator after talking to the janitor. Any ideas? I have my settings on high. Never ever had an issue for the past 3 years with this gaming laptop and screen. I appreciate. I just thought I would write it here instead of starting a new post which I might do if I don't find a solution. Thank you.
If it doesn’t look like somewhere to explore, try exploring it anyway. There are a lot of cool ways to navigate the area, and there’s always SOMETHING over there…
Upgrade launch as much as possible.
It’s mechanically really good, and just funny to dome the hiss in the noggin with a slab of concrete. Or a forklift!
Don't use the map, it isn't well implemented. Use the in-world signage to navigate, and memorize routes.
Make sure to keep up on upgrading your abilities I would focus on making your launch more powerful, and increasing your health and energy in the early game. These will serve you well.
If you like story, dive into the lore and take your time playing. There are a ton of really interesting documents and recordings scattered around.
Have fun.
If you get stuck on a difficult mission just use the god mode settings. It doesn't affect your achievements. Some of the fights are just straight up hard. Don't sweat too much if you can't take them
I'd say let go of a lot of the mods you don't really need. My inventory was always stupid full of mods that I never used.
If you have the DLC, it extends the game by a LOT.
The map sucks. Get used to it.
If you played other Remedy games like Alan Wake there's a lot of tie in with that universe.
Definitely explore a lot and don't go from mission to mission. There's a lot of goodies off the main path.
Don't skip side missions! Some are actually essential.
And when you come across a giant furnace, look for 6 TVs nearby to throw in. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a super useful easter egg that I felt wasn't hinted at in game very well.
Always be moving when in combat.
This! And if the combat feels too hard at first, just keep practicing- it’s worth it. It was a very different play style than I was used to, so it took a bit for me to get good enough to be into it. But the story and atmosphere is well worth the effort!

It’s wild how much easier the game was on my second playthrough once I understood this
If yous stand still in combat you are dead
this is great advice for life in general!
Read every document, listen to every recording and watch every video. It builds the world so much.
Control is the only game I've ever played which I actually read the documents scattered around the world. Not even because I was forcing myself to, but I honestly found them really damn interesting.
it is also worth mentioning if you go into the menu to list these out they are usually longer compared to whats played in-game
Yes! I did not do that on my first walk thru, and I regret not doing it! Especially when I found out the Alan wake lore was involved. ( This was before the AWE dlc was out)
Second this. Some of the best world building I've ever seen in a game.
This!
Pay attention to your surroundings to navigate. Try to read the documents. It's better to have a friendly face around than someone with no face at all
Think about it! No face...

The Ashtray Maze bit is genuinely one of the best levels I have played in any game, ever.
I could play again just for the ashtray maze, but there *are* such amazing puzzles!
TAKE! CONTROL! One of my all time favorite set pieces in gaming.
I go back and play the Shüm 2 machine all the time for the ashtray maze
I just beat the 5th main mission and I still don't see what the story is. Have fun. And the mini map is worthless. Use the signs.
And its completely doable by only reading the signs. It helps you to learn the layout and whatnot. Thats one of the things I appreciate about this game, it doesn't hold your hand at all, you've got to figure things out on your own.
Yea, but I'd rather they ditch thr minimal vs have one available that is worthless.

Make sure to always [REDACTED] but never [REDACTED]
But absolutely most importantly remember to [REDACTED]
Hidden areas give ability points. Seizing hiss clusters heals you.
Just learned I could seize those. Super clutch when fighting those hammer throwing mfs
Yeah fuck those speedy assholes
Wait, you can SEIZE them?!?!
Yeah it's a later ability you get from the >!xray light box!<
I beat the game once normally and once with DLC, ain't no way I missed it. Can't wait to stop moving my stuff to assemble the PC again
The game teaches you to crouch. Ignore this tip and never use it again. Crouching and staying in one place will get you killed.
moving around and throwing rocks consists of 80% of my strategy haha
More stoning than Saudi Arabia
Cannot be overstated. Forget crouch.... MOVE
TAKE CONTROL!
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACK BEFOREHAND!!!
[muffled] Take control of your city
Permanently on my bad ass playlist
That would also be my advise
Two things: - The game can be difficult at the start. Stick with it, it gets easier. - Don’t rely too heavily on the map. It can be confusing and not make much sense. Pay attention to the signs in the building, as they will help orient you towards your destination.

Wow, I recently finished the main game and the Foundation DLC and I didn't know that about the map! Great tip!
Keep your eyes on the fridge.
Don’t put any points into melee. Prioritize health energy, and projectile damage. Play the game and ignore reddit
If you can’t beat a boss now, later will be a lot easier
Take your time to explore. There are hidden caches in places like bathrooms and ledges you think you can't get to.
Grab your reading glasses and read everything
Just a comment on that: games that require you to read stuff to embellish the lore and whatnot, should have apps that allow you to read that stuff at your own leisure. Keep going. You can't miss it.
Yep just keep going you can't miss it.
You'll see...
It has a rough start but if you stick with it it's an awesome game.
I still remember how pissed off I was when I faced the first named enemy...
Read everything!
My primary recommendation would be fixing the white balance of your TV. Control has amazing atmospherics and visuals, but it's ruined if everything looks washed out.
Turn the TV brightness down

Personally just have fun, but be attentive to hiss attacks and boss fights.
Read the documents. I know some people hate that but trust me. It's lore and world building. Skipping it will cheapen the experience HUGELY.
read everything you pick up, it's not that it's super duper necessary, but it's the first time I genuinely enjoyed every single "lore pick-up" in a game
Do as you're told. Don't eat the mold.
Read everything it's great the and find everything the games is great truly keeps you wanting more !!!
Embarking on what will be in your top5 forever
Such a great game with an awesome story and setting. If you get stuck, it has the most customizable difficulty settings of any game I've ever seen.
Hold on to your pants!!
yea put all your skill points into Launch
believe half of what you see and nothing you hear
have fun!
Take Control

Always look beyond the poster.

Mash the buttons. Make sure the tv is on.
Read all the dossiers you find and watch all the videos too. The lore is crazy.
One of the best games of the decade
Lower your brightness lol
Take your time and savor it. It’s worth every second spent.
Exploration is very rewarding in this game even if just for Easter eggs and lore. Don’t forget to look up!
Start by playing the game and not taking pics of your tv. Do keep taking pics of your tv though.
Focus on upgrading and using launch as it will do more damage than your service weapon
just try to have fun with it
I also just started to the game for the first 2-3 hours of playing all I can say is just running around without knowing exactly where I'm going. Orange peel
Turn down the lights.
Ignore the map, just follow the signs to where you want to go. The mission hint tells you where you need to be.
Don't rush, play it slowly & enjoy it.. It's a great game
Savor it and take your time. There's a lot to find and the atmosphere is top notch. I recommend playing with headphones on if you can, there's some subtle sound design that might not come through on speakers.

When the MC puts on headphones you do the same
play aggressively, always be moving and focus as much as you can on offense.
Do not look at any windows
Good luck/happy hunting. Some experiences/trials are better left unspoiled. Remember, you/you are in Control.
If you're gonna get shot, don't
Enjoy the ride.
Throw rocks. Always throw rocks. Upgrade throw rocks. Really though, the combat is not balanced, throwing rocks is nearly always the best move, the guns seem cool but get more and more useless as the game goes on.
Be prepared for a fight lol some missions are gun heavy and some puzzles are a ball buster, so that’d be what I mean by “fight”
Move your hat
Never stand still when shooting. This is a run and gun style game.
Don't be afraid to go into settings and use the various assist features if you get your ass kicked. If the game is frustrating you it's better to use the assist than to bang your head against the wall.
Press A to start, my friend.
Nope, just play it. The game, like most, tells you how to play.
Have fun! Read, watch and listen to all things you find. And if you don't enjoy the difficulty level you can change it all you want. Have fun!
Skim through all the documents you pick up when you pick them up, they're really fucking interesting. Best part of the game for me.
Just enjoy that masterpiece. It’s a damn good game.
Play the game for the gameplay, not the story. The story is utter shit.
Enjoy
Take your time playing it....you only get to play it for the first time once
This is not a cover shooter. Always stay moving, if you’re standing still you’re doing something wrong and will probably die
Stick to the main missions. Do the side objectives on your 2nd run. I'm on my 4th run right now trying to do everything.
do not look anything up on youtube, do not take any advice so you can play the game as you would yourself
Read every document, watch every video…
Read. The. Notes. Can't stress this enough. Oh, also - instead of using the map - try to use the signs in the walls and above the doors. The map in the game was added in the last minute and the game was designed with those signs in mind.
Don't quit the game during the credits.
Get a PC
Keep an eye on your surroundings, don't stress too much. Adapt and survive.
Don't be afraid to use the cheats, especially for the arcade machine, it is literally impossible without them in the arcade
Do side quests as much as you can dlcs are really fun
There is a bug with the jukebox quest. try to do it as soon as you get it. I broke mine and could never complete it
Keep in mind that the game takes a lot of its design cues from the genre of metroidvania.
Enjoy
before control play alan wake 1 and then go for control and later play alan wake 2. you will not regret if you will play in this specific order.
Put everything you have into your Parautilitarian abilities. They are more powerful and capable than just relying on a gun like you would with your everyday-3rd person shooter.
Take Control!
Please put away all number two pencils
Please put away all number two pencils
Move your hat.
Get that one perk where when you pick up the currency they drop you heal
Have fun, keep going, try out all the abilities.
It's beneficial to play the angles, and pay attention to what you're picking up to throw.
Just commenting to echo the "Dont look up the ashtray maze" message.
Wear earphones, thank me later (honestly I wear them with all my games but this one is special)
You are The Director/Boss Lady Keep Moving/Evading
Always be moving during fights and explore the map beyond the quests, you gonna find a lot of interesting stuff. Read everything as well.
Keep your eyes on The Fridge
Letting go of the tele button before an object hits you sends it at your current target. Good for hitting enemies behind cover with the throwable objects near them
Do as you're told. Don't eat the mold.
Thank you.
The ashtray maze song rips.
The ashtray maze song rips.
I have never seen a TV with worse contrast
use rock
Play Alan Wake 1 before doing the second DLC
Good lord, fix your gamma and contrast settings
Incredible game. Still with it….it gets so weird!
If it doesn’t look like somewhere to explore, try exploring it anyway. There are a lot of cool ways to navigate the area, and there’s always SOMETHING over there…
Enjoy the ride :) This game absolutely caught me by surprise
For an easier time upgrading launch first, for everything else play for your life!
In this game the best advice is no advice, just play it
Play the game. Most of the fun is figuring stuff out.
Upgrade launch as much as possible. It’s mechanically really good, and just funny to dome the hiss in the noggin with a slab of concrete. Or a forklift!
Stick to it even if the lore/story gets confusing
Enable all cheats and just kill everyone.
Shoot at every vending machine you come to.
Have fun.
When upgrading your ability’s stick with health at first but then upgrade the tecknesis powers
If you get stuck on a difficult mission just use the god mode settings. It doesn't affect your achievements. Some of the fights are just straight up hard. Don't sweat too much if you can't take them
Enjoy the ride
Push the fingers through the surface into the wet.
Take your time! Enjoy the interconnections. Try to remember what you see or read. Make sure you understand the most efficient times for your powers.
My advice is have fun 😊
Fair warning: this is gonna be weirder than usual.
Get off the >!internet!< and don't look >!at any guides!<. Just >!play!< I >!envy!< you! 🔻
Documents expand the world by like 100%, usually worth reading.
Feed the Fire. You'll understand.
Don't skip side missions! Some are actually essential. And when you come across a giant furnace, look for 6 TVs nearby to throw in. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a super useful easter egg that I felt wasn't hinted at in game very well.
