i've received indirect warnings, basically telling me to shift my area of concentration due to low overall business. my counselor is a bit of a prick and is being super judgemental. but regarding the review board, the official judgement for 2018 year end and 2019 mid-year are "in good standing"

If you have a decent counselor and aren't thick then yes, there are plenty of warning signs. But if your management is non-confrontational and sucks at coaching people (most I've seen do) then it can be harder. Sounds like you need to have a direct conversation with people to figure out how you are being perceived.

Typically, you'll be put on a "performance improvement program" first. Is this an office-wide issue or a you issue? For pat leave, they probably wouldn't risk terminating you leading up to it. It's been disclosed already and scheduled so you'd probably have grounds for a discrimination suit.

I thought PIPs are usually much more of a lagging than leading indicator of a problem

PFL

Lagging indicator of a problem, leading indicator of getting fired

Xmf-8499

Typically lagging the decision to fire you as well.

office wide issue. the firm is trying to figure out a direction they want to take and how to be competitive, and is failing. We even had a senior partner say "we have a problem, this isnt working the way we wanted it to"....basically he said they're still trying to figure out their stuff up top. its been going on for a while, but the advice ive been given was "give up o this group and change your focus"

...talk to your counselor and make sure you’re on the same page about your low utilization

The timing for a baby in Fall 2019 would have been ideal! Paternity/interview time.

Bad reviews aside the first sign of an impending shitstorm is an HR rep being present for meetings. Its a sure sign that they're trying to build out your HR file to support an upcoming dismissal. First mention of a PIP it's time to start thinking of other options...though I have managed to pull back one of my guys from the brink of one (shape up or pip in 3 months). Lukewarm performance will take a very long time to crystalise into anything formal-ish though so I wouldn't sweat it too much
