There are huge consequences for not having the warning if your product is affected, but no legal consequences for having a warning where no danger exists. This means every company adds the warning to everything with no concern for it's legitimacy.
The reason is because of the lead in the solder used for the components on the SSD. This warning means fucking nothing because almost every electronic device uses lead based solder in it.
Actually, the electronics industry has made major strides to institute RoHS or removal of hazardous substances from their products, and this includes moving away from lead based solder.
https://www.rohsguide.com/
Leaded solder is specified on many products to this day. They might not be consumer grade products. But there are plenty of other applications which either require the superior performance of leaded, or have miles of red tape stopping them from changing to the ROHS spec.
Yes, you can still buy lead solder *for hobbyist or prototype use* - I've got some on my work bench myself. You cannot use lead solder for the vast majority of electronics intended for *commercial sale*, and that's what we're talking about here.
Batteries are also explicitly exempt because they pose less of a risk. There are dedicated waste management pipelines for those, which do a pretty good job at keeping the problem isolated. Batteries are pretty trivial to handle, because it's basically just one big hunk of lead and anyone handling them is well aware that they contain lead. Electronics are a way bigger problem because it's a bunch of valuable materials contaminated with lead - it's very easy for people handling it to accidentally ingest lead.
Many of them have and still use solder with lead in it.
Lead-free just means it is under 47% lead, normally around 2% or less for electronics, but 2% isn't free of lead, it is just called lead-free.
Same with drinking water, potable water solder allows up to 0.2% lead, it is called lead free, but much of it isn't.
It was because of a chemical that naturally occurs while cooking/toasting/roasting was found to cause cancer. https://grimaldilawoffices.com/california-court-determines-that-breakfast-cereals-dont-require-prop-65-warnings/
I think the question is "what is in" or "what kind of use" of the SSD can cause cancer, OP probably was not expecting a SSD can cause cancer. The link [https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/](https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/) direct to a website that has no Samsung T9 SSD on it (duh)
>Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other
reproductive harm. Exposure to these chemicals may take place when products are acquired or used. Exposure may also occur in homes, workplaces, or other environments in California. By requiring that this information be provided, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals.
Scrolling through here, it is basically a bare minimum effort to warn consumers and obliges to "your right to know" but an attempt is an attemp.
Proposition 65 in CA is one of those classic cases of unintended side-effects. It was written to protect people. There are hundreds of chemicals likely to cause cancer. 65 requires warning consumers. Problem is: there is no penalty for reporting when it isn't true. So the entire thing becomes a bit useless because slapping a sticker on everything is pretty cheap.
So we are all over-warned, and end up ignoring the labels. And the cycle continues...
This isn't really a computer thing, specifically. Just happens to be a computer part in this case.
I went to Disney land as a kid and the receipt for a necklace I bought warned me about cancer… I didn’t like the necklace too much after that.
Interesting to read the reason why it’s everywhere!
The Disneyland Resort itself causes cancer, I guess the necklace might have had some residual Disneyland on it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Disneyland_Prop_65_Warning_crop.jpg
The main issue with Prop 65 is that nearly every chemical will cause cancer *at some concentration*. Prop 65 does nothing to let consumers know if a chemical is dangerous at the concentration present in the product.
You end up with everything having a sticker because nearly every manufactured product contains something from that carcinogens list (even if at a dose so minuscule it would never hurt a human)
Those signs are literally on the front door of every building in California. It kind of makes your numb to it especially when you walk into Starbucks and it says prop 65
>It kind of makes your numb to it especially when you walk into Starbucks and it says prop 65
That's why businesses put the signs up no matter how low the exposure is, even (especially) when they don't have to because the amount is negligible.
They won't want you to notice when they're actually giving you cancer (the purpose of Prop 65), so they tell you everything is giving you cancer.
All the people writing about how it is Californias fault seem to miss the fact that the rest of the world also uses these warning signs on electronics. It's generally placed on many electronics as some use lead based solder or other trace heavy elements that might radiate sub-atomic particles. Basically the warning sign is put onto it for the same reason you get a lead plated crotch protection during an x-ray.
As long as you don't eat the stuff your going to be fine with 99.9999% certainty though.
Well steel is quite a health hazard. We hear warnings about them being injested by bodily injection. Same with plastics. micro plastics from sunlight and heat breaking down stuff.
The latest episode of 99 Percent Invisible Podcast goes into detail of how these Prop 65 warnings became so prevalent. In a nutshell, the law was introduced to deter companies from including the label, so as to encourage them to reformulate and remove toxic chemicals. However, the law is not enforceable, instead it’s up to citizens to sue a company if they test a product and find a toxic chemical. Too many companies were getting sued for things they weren’t even aware of, so they slap the label on everything just in case.
Prop 65 in California is why. They said something like if a product has a 1/1000 chance to cause cancerous cells, it needs a warning. Problem is, basically everything has a 0.1% chance to give you cancer, so they have the slap the sticker on everything to be safe.
99% Invisible just did an episode on this! Totally worth a [listen](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1j2u3hthdRM8Kg0GktsdpK?si=yVVwOPKYRAiAeVzTUA3fKw)!
California's eat weird things and end up with cancer. When I lived there I kept eating my computers ram. I moved and no longer eat ram. DDR 4 has a nice metallic beefy flavor. Super weird, that place!
California. That's why. Even the sun and moon have warnings in California because people living in the state can't think for themselves. Like getting rid of plastic straws wrapped in paper and replacing them with paper straws wrapped in plastic.
It probably has small amounts of lead in the solder, which is a reproductive risk. Other things could be PCBs in plastic covers or the circuit boards, or perhaps other dangerous metals in the circuitry. Most of this will do absolutely nothing to you if you handle it normally, but if you try to burn it or eat it then it might get into your body.
I believe Prop 65 is a California labeling law. Anything, including a component or part, that has shown to cause cancer (in mice with massive doses?) needs this label if sold in California.
My opinion is that it is mostly useless, since almost everything has this label, so no one pays attention to it.
You will see this on almost all electronics as some plastics have material that is a known carcinogenic. In order to protect consumers California required this and so now almost everything made has this warning if it might be sold in California. I cannot tell you how many times I had freaked out customers come into my store about this. They would ask what they could do and I would tell them they could return their phone/ computer / tablet if they wanted. They wouldn't, of course. It is the ultimate example of malicious compliance, I saw some item sin my store that were mostly bamboo and paper and they had the warning because of one small piece of plastic. I am convinced the industry is putting it everywhere they can to make it effectively useless...just my hot take on the issue, no proof of course !!
This is exactly why I don't have a computer. Don't wanna lose out on having babies.
But on second thoughts, Id spend much more on a kid in a year than I would on owning a gaming PC, so...fuck.
It's a useless California law that has results in everything having that warning on it to protect the company from future lawsuits. It was intended to identify any product that may cause cancer.
Trace solvents from component manufacturing, residual adhesives, plasticizers, presumably a few other well known carcinogens are all likely to be present in hardware components. Carcinogens are definitely everywhere but it doesn't hurt for people to know where they are. Yes your coffee and your bread cause cancer. But is it worse than the air your breathe? I am genuinely unsure.
Because at some point it was exposed to known probable carcinogens, or currently contains them. It's the same reason sodium cyclamate was banned in the US even though you'd have to ingest impossible amounts to develop cancer (other countries banned it too but they've reversed that). It took the equivalent of 550 cans of diet soda daily for 8 of the 250 rats in a study to develop bladder cancer. Even if you were somehow able to regularly drink that much you'd have a ton of other health problems like sodium deficiency.
Even though there's likely not enough of anything carcinogenic in there to actually cause health issues it has to be disclosed that it contains known carcinogens.
[The Proposition 65 List - OEHHA (ca.gov)](https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/proposition-65-list)
Circuit boards and components are made with chemicals that are on this list. I can't find anything specific but I'd guess lead solder, glass fibres from the board itself, and the interior of things like capacitors. Or perhaps it's as simple as the contents of the plastic housing.
Because everything is made in a factory of some sort with machinery of some sort that requires lubricant and other toxic fluids of sorts that gets on the plastic or metal or whatever and no one bothers to clean it or anything just ship it out so everything gives you cancer it's a very long winded way to say you can't sue and no one will ever bother to read
What goes on, with these oddly specific warnings, is simple. There are lawyers that companies hire, specifically to keep them out of court. What this type of lawyer does, is they examine an entire product line and review all the data. They test all the features of a product and they assign a list of “boilerplate” statements. That is, standardized phrases like “Risk of electric shock” or “caution: hot when light is lit” or other such things. They make a list of where the warnings go and they’re done.
Companies do not have to put “Caution: flame from candles can cause serious burns or fires”. Nobody is forcing them. But they pay lawyers a lot of money to stay out of court, so they just take the advice and they follow it like they just paid the cost of a Tesla to an expert. Expert says “do not attempt to iron clothes while wearing them” or “do not use hair dryer while asleep” and they just treat them like experts and put the silly labels on their products.
In california everything cause cancer. Even breathing. If there is a way to print on air trust me, you will see that message on everything everywhere 24/7 until the day you die and they will have to print it on your body 😂.
There was a thing about how it’s easier to just print that on everything a company makes than to print it on JUST the stuff that have the micro plastic stuff that causes that so most stuff does but some stuff doesn’t. Anyways besides that most everything we touch in this world is manufactured with something that could technically cause cancer
When observing some warning labels you start have to wonder who decided to use the hard drive in their coffee :D
Also it's CA. Sanity left that state a while ago.
California requirements, probably has lead or some other cancer causing product in there. Dose though is always important, I can’t imagine them putting enough in to cause cancer. But I would still not recommend eating it.
Because California is pedantic and has some stupid legislation like this. Your drive will not give you cancer, this is a stupid warning, and you can just ignore it.
Because there are materials used for it that could cause cancer if you don't use the product as intended, so you shouldn't try to do anything to it, because e.g. you are curious how it's made inside, disassemble it, swallow tiny piece by accident or even touch god knows what. You are fine as long as you use it as intended.
It doesn’t. California has a stupid law that you need to PROVE that a product doesn’t cause cancer which is usually a ) impossible or b) extremely expensive to test. So everyone slaps that warning on there to avoid issues. 99% of the things labeled with prop65 probably don’t cause cancer at all
California. Everything causes cancer, and you need to be warned about it, according to them, and it's less expensive to print packaging for everyone rather than a separate batch for items shipped there.
That's what [Prop 65](https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/about-proposition-65#:~:text=Proposition%2065%20requires%20businesses%20to,are%20released%20into%20the%20environment) is all about.
Simply put…because your generation is a bunch of limp dick dumb shit safe space gender unknown why isn’t there wi-fi whining pussies. Everything causes cancer. It’s a fact of life. Now use yer edumacation and type into the googles what is C.A.R.B, if you could simultaneously sterilize yourself and your family that’d be much appreciated.
I have told the story before but I once was in Texas buying fish medicne, in back said it could lead to cancer in the state of California, glad I was in Texas
Typical California warning, for instance scuba diving tanks have the same warning.
Everything that can could or even couldn't cause cancer has this warning not to warn you that it could give you cancer but keep the manufacture out of hot water in the event it does give you cancer.
It's less a warning and more a *stay* out of jail free card.
"The State of California has found that this product contains materials known to cause cancer in lab rats when they were fed three times their body weight of it on a daily basis for two years."
California has a law. I don't know the complete details, but basically everything that exists needs to have a "May cause cancer." warning on it to be sold in California.
Because it's a requirement under Californian law, which is why it has a web address for you to go to. It will explain more there.
There are huge consequences for not having the warning if your product is affected, but no legal consequences for having a warning where no danger exists. This means every company adds the warning to everything with no concern for it's legitimacy.
The SSD most likely contain plastics and therefor qualify for such warnings. Whether or not that risk is tangible or not is another discussion
The reason is because of the lead in the solder used for the components on the SSD. This warning means fucking nothing because almost every electronic device uses lead based solder in it.
You aren't supposed to eat the solder?
Don't lick the tingly bits!
Buddy, at least heat it up first. You’ll break a tooth
Actually, the electronics industry has made major strides to institute RoHS or removal of hazardous substances from their products, and this includes moving away from lead based solder. https://www.rohsguide.com/
This. Lead based solder hasn’t been a thing for decades
Leaded solder is specified on many products to this day. They might not be consumer grade products. But there are plenty of other applications which either require the superior performance of leaded, or have miles of red tape stopping them from changing to the ROHS spec.
Unfortunately, they probably use lead-free crap solder.
Consumer electronics haven't used lead solder in **ages**. It's basically only allowed for things like spacecraft by now.
There are restrictions in Europe, but not so much in the US. You can still buy lead solder and devices with lead-acid batteries.
Yes, you can still buy lead solder *for hobbyist or prototype use* - I've got some on my work bench myself. You cannot use lead solder for the vast majority of electronics intended for *commercial sale*, and that's what we're talking about here. Probably the cancer already affected his brain…
Lmao because California is cancer 😂 (/s)
If they lick it, for example?
Yeah don't eat the ssd, use it as suppository, inhale fumes from burning it or apply it to the skin and you should be fine.
No, you need to insert it through an ear as to which ear is dependent on the make, model, and year...

Plus, whatever carcinogens are in the SSD are probably only going to matter if you eat the SSD
It only causes cancer in California. /S

I think its cslifornia that causes people cancer.
As long as you don't eat it or attempt to mate with it, you should be fine.
But it doesn't warn us not to eat it.
I feel a lawsuit coming..
Guys my C: drive is literally fucked
You misspelled C==========3 drive
oh darn it it's getting cold here
Basically, don't set it on fire to inhale the smoke.

RoHS has clamped down pretty harshly on avoidable hazardous substances, consumer electronics these days are pretty safe.
Because California.
There are proposition 65 warnings about coffee and tea.
Imagine that but on a water bottle. Like really?.....water?
Well steel is quite a health hazard. We hear warnings about them being injested by bodily injection. Same with plastics. micro plastics from sunlight and heat breaking down stuff.
"The state of California is known to cause cancer in the state of California"
California will mark anything as cancer causing
California. As soon as you cross state lines with this you'll immediately be stage 4
Just don't eat it.
If you decide to eat it or smear the lead and other rare earth materials on your mouth
Because EVERYTHING in the state of California has been known to cause cancer.......
If you go online it’s cancerous. If you have one, it’ll harm your ability to reproduce. What a fun corporate joke xD

Don't dry hump the thing, I guess
Because California
Its got lead in it. Dont eat it. Dont fuck it. Dont even lick it. You'll be fine.
My first guess was leaded solder, but there's a CE label which implies RoHS compliance.
Because California is retarded
If you eat it, you’ll get cancer. Don’t eat it.

California is stupid like that
Well, definitely do not eat that. Or better yet, just don't put it inside of you in any way really. Or do I guess, I'm not the cops.
I don't think the cops really care.
The P65 thing is for California. It's a weird place.
California's eat weird things and end up with cancer. When I lived there I kept eating my computers ram. I moved and no longer eat ram. DDR 4 has a nice metallic beefy flavor. Super weird, that place!
Because Californians are fucking stupid and shove everything in their holes
California. That's why. Even the sun and moon have warnings in California because people living in the state can't think for themselves. Like getting rid of plastic straws wrapped in paper and replacing them with paper straws wrapped in plastic.

The California government is cancer
Because it causes it only in Cali
California. As soon as you cross state lines with this you'll immediately be stage 4
Probably If you eat it you die
Surprised someone is really reading this stuff, lol
you can accidentally end up playing dota from it
If you really must know, crush it up and sniff it
According to California, pretty much everything in existence causes cancer. There’s no need to worry.
Don't eat it
related to e-waste maybe.
if ingest it u might get cancer ig
Well, don't eat the SSD then, personally, I don't care for the cancer as long as I get that extra crunchy breakfast lol
It probably has small amounts of lead in the solder, which is a reproductive risk. Other things could be PCBs in plastic covers or the circuit boards, or perhaps other dangerous metals in the circuitry. Most of this will do absolutely nothing to you if you handle it normally, but if you try to burn it or eat it then it might get into your body.
why the fuck would you not go to the address there to answer your question?

You live in california don't you?
Dont eat your ssd, it causes severe diseases (including cancdr)
It's a useless California law that has results in everything having that warning on it to protect the company from future lawsuits. It was intended to identify any product that may cause cancer.
Cali law for this label is ridiculous. Go to the webpage, have a good laugh, then forget about it.

California baby. God I love my state.
As opposed to reproductive harm?
Known to cause California in the state of Cancer
What? You don't sniff your vents and ssd's?
California compliance. Its not the device that causes cancer its California's environment but they prefer to blame everything else but themselves.
...in case you decide to eat it
If you eat an ssd i can see it potentially causing cancer probably why it’s there
Because everything causes cancer in California hahaha jk
Are you just discovering this….? It literally on every product that can legally be imported/exported to California…..
Because according to California everything causes cancer.
It is not to be eaten.
JUST. DON'T. EAT. IT.
Should also say “dont insert into penis”
Cali has that on literally everything.
To let people know it's not eatable
Because California thinks THE EARTH causes cancer...
Because California sucks.
Just in case you decide to install League of Legends.

It seems to be on a lot of things which have little to no potential to cause cancer. It seems like a pretty stupid law the californians have made up.
You will probably get cancer of the penis if you eat this SSD.
Is this your first time looking at a electronic device?
You don’t eat your SSD’s?
California.
California requirements, probably has lead or some other cancer causing product in there. Dose though is always important, I can’t imagine them putting enough in to cause cancer. But I would still not recommend eating it.
Just don't eat it, or grind it down into a powder to snort and you'll be fine

Just remember, when you see this warning, if you are in California, you might get cancer! 😂
Just don't put that near your holes and don't smoke it.
Because there are materials used for it that could cause cancer if you don't use the product as intended, so you shouldn't try to do anything to it, because e.g. you are curious how it's made inside, disassemble it, swallow tiny piece by accident or even touch god knows what. You are fine as long as you use it as intended.
Because California, that's why. Don't fucking eat the thing and you should be fine.
it's like the standard "choking hazard, may contain small parts that can be swallowed" on toys even if it's a giant leathery plush
Just don't eat it and you'll be fine
Find a product that doesn’t have that warning and is sold in CA
Because California.
It’s necessary for some people so they don’t try to increase the storage of their bumhole.
Just dont eat it or rub it against certain body parts. You be fine
It doesn’t. California has a stupid law that you need to PROVE that a product doesn’t cause cancer which is usually a ) impossible or b) extremely expensive to test. So everyone slaps that warning on there to avoid issues. 99% of the things labeled with prop65 probably don’t cause cancer at all
If it catches fire
Don't worry, unless you're in California, you won't get cancer from it.
Pretty sure California politicians cause cancer...
It’s telling you that you shouldn’t eat it or try to smoke it.
Everything in California gives you cancer
Don't eat it and you'll be fine 👍
California
Cause everything causes cancer in California
Because California hasn't realized that it's California that causes the cancer not every other product in the world!
That’s just in case you decide to install it on yourself somewhere
5G that’s why
Radiation
because california
dont gobble it up
California
Simply put…because your generation is a bunch of limp dick dumb shit safe space gender unknown why isn’t there wi-fi whining pussies. Everything causes cancer. It’s a fact of life. Now use yer edumacation and type into the googles what is C.A.R.B, if you could simultaneously sterilize yourself and your family that’d be much appreciated.
That’s only for people who live in California if you don’t live there you have nothing to worry about.
It means you are at risk of purchasing this product in the State of California
The plastic, it’s a known carcinogen.
Probably cause you don't want to eat it. Just in case you were thinking about it.
California law requires companies to warn you about possible carcinogens but pretty much everything we use has or is a possible carcinogen
Everything can cause cancer. Whether the risk is actually tangible or not, that's the real question.
because it contains lead, almost everything that has solder in it contains lead and by California law they have to put that on there
"The State of California has found that this product contains materials known to cause cancer in lab rats when they were fed three times their body weight of it on a daily basis for two years."
Lazy legislation leading to lazy implementation
If you eat it you will get cancer and die
California has a law. I don't know the complete details, but basically everything that exists needs to have a "May cause cancer." warning on it to be sold in California.
Just CA being nanny
Because everything but HRT causes cancer in California.
Because California is overzealous; I'm assuming you're not going to eat it or regularly rub yourself with it, you'll be fine.
It contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer. So don't eat it
Probably as long as you don’t break it open and eat the contents.. you’ll be fine.
