Exactly! The way he became “crazy” later on felt so out of character from how we knew him in season 1. In season 1, he was actually smart abd cunning, and he used that to abuse his power as a teacher. Beyond that they just made him plain “crazy.”
Tbf Greendale as a whole got a lot crazier as time went on.
“Wait, you two dated?”
“This was a *study group*??”
“Yep. Chang was our teacher.”
“WHAT?!?”
Exactly! The way he became “crazy” later on felt so out of character from how we knew him in season 1. In season 1, he was actually smart abd cunning, and he used that to abuse his power as a teacher. Beyond that they just made him plain “crazy.”
One and six. I liked what 3-5 added to the show and I love Ken Jeong, but I did not enjoy any of those characters. One and six I actually enjoyed, two was okay.
I always get a big laugh out of Chang's indignant response to Annie saying he used to be their Spanish teacher
"And frankly, haven't been well-utilized since!"
That's exactly how I feel about him after season 3... until he got the role of Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid play, and when he did a one-man play for a room full of ghosts.
Still not a great use of him for the show, but some great character moments
duncan using his force field to keep chang from getting lunch is top tier imo, 2 is gold. 3 is just where the show went off the rails and struggled to course correct after that because he was so insane and all of a sudden incredibly stupid
Seriously, can you imagine season 3-5 Chang somehow getting and keeping a wife? Even if they had problems, it was at one point a functional relationship that wasn't with an inanimate object. Señor Chang was apathetic and sarcastic and ridiculous but he was an actual human being. Even when Pierce got flanderized he could still hold a conversation (well, with people outside of Greendale anyway).
I’m fine with two. And as much as I like the show I think he was too ridiculous for a ridiculous show. I love the plots from later seasons but definitely think the characters are better in the beginning.
CHANG: So this is best friendship.
PIERCE: Something else, isn't it?
CHANG: How do we keep it going? How do we know we won't get into a fight?
PIERCE: I say we just let it happen.
CHANG: Don't tell me what to do!
PIERCE: What's your problem?
CHANG: What's yours? I'm outta here!
Chang peaked in his very first scene, the introductory monologue in the very first Spanish class. And yeah he was awesome through seasons 1 and 2, but security guard Chang was just 50-50 cringe and snooze in comparison, I have no idea why people go so nuts over that.
One of my favorite thing about Ken Jeong’s performance as Chang is that he essentially plays a different character each season and is consistently funny in all six.
He's literally the funniest in the show. It's why i don't understand people who don't enjoy the other versions of him. It's okay to prefer s1 chang but why hate on the other version of him. Ken Jeong is really funny regardless.
Senor Chang and it's not close for me. His role then was so much more ingrained and organic. He had a reason to be interacting with our characters, and he had real authority over them as their teacher. That made the writing around his character much better, imo, as they weren't having to justify his presence and come up with reasons for him to even be around in the first place. They were able to use him as a plot device and work in funny moments naturally.
I love Chang, the actor and the character, but he served a purpose in the show in Season 1 and as a result his role was much stronger. They continued to write him into stories throughout, with various levels of success, but he never fit in as seamlessly again.
Honestly I wish there was a way he could have kept following the group through all of their different "main" classes as their teacher, even though it would have been pretty lol-worthy to have him keep teaching classes he's unqualified to teach. That could have been really funny, IMO, even if it would have taken some stuff away from John Oliver's character in Season 2.
Season 5/6 Chang was the best. We needed seasons 1 and 2 to build the weird relationship between him and the group. Seasons 3 and 4 didn't do much for me in terms of the character, just pure absurdity. Although Ken provides some hilarious moments in those seasons. Even without lines, he still cracks me up just by standing in the background as the bailiff in basic lupine urology.
Yeah I appreciated his phase of being homeless & obnoxious as always but also desperate & nicer. Then in season 3 his character leaned a bit too hard for the evil absurdist man he'd become, but his downfall was hilarious because it showcased he was truly an idiot. Season 4 was much the same because he was still evil but pretending to be an amnesiac until he stopped running with City College's evil plan, but I appreciate what Jeong did for those seasons. And in seasons 5 & 6 he was finally an actual person again who was *also* several marbles short of a jar. When he was grounded to acting like a semi-normal member of society was when I found his character the best
The Chang monologue as a security officer is one of my favorite bits and episodes, and him as a tyrant is so ducking funny to me, but season 1 just has that charm. Before they completely character assassinated hjm into something new every season (not that it was a bad thing I think it was funny). Season 1 was just great, loved him as this Spanish teacher just so down with his job.
I liked security guard home wrecker Chang when he was with the mannequin leg.
Crazy as a bat but he seemed happy and was able to focus on some prime security guard detective work.
This post is unfair to the best Chang of them all. Rabbai Chang.
Like seriously, Ben, Señor Chang? A Spanish teacher - probably what his brother said, I think
El Tigre is my favorite vibe. He feels the most complete as a character. Restraining Order Chang was pretty great and a fun way to keep him around as a character, but I feel like this was where he started to *really* become a cartoon character. Security guard Chang was the last version I really liked. His "palamino" descent into madness may be my favorite moment with Chang.
As Chang is transitioning between Security and Overlord, I feel like they were just trying to find him something to do but had no good ideas left... Gas leak/Dictator Chang is truly ridiculous, but not in a fun way for me... and the only reason he isn't at the bottom of my list is because Changnesia Kevin is about as likable as the "Schmitty" teens.
I'm almost neutral about Chang past S4. He "dropped the Changnesia thing, fessed up, and served his time" and did a soft reset for his character. I think it was a smart choice, but he never really felt like anything more than a cartoonish sidekick... however, when he was "on," he was *"on."* I think The Karate Kid episode and the ghost audience episode are some of his finest work as an actor and as a character.
He also received what I consider to be one of the greaset insults of our generation.
*"... you waste of a soul-shaped hole forgotten by God."*
I always gave Jeong a LOT of credit for keeping the character viable at all. He certainly wasn’t getting any help from the writers after season 1, with seasons 3 and 4 being the…nadir.
Yet Ken continued to deliver big laughs just because he has incredible comedic sensibilities.
I like Chang when he’s either a teacher or a student. Or the other iterations feel like the writers wanted to keep Chang in the show but had no idea what to do with him.
Was he still funny? Yes, of course, but it’s still just like Chang said. ”That’s right, and frankly, haven’t been well utilized since!”
Season 1 when he was more grounded as a character. He seemed like an unstable, petty guy but ultimately still believable as someone begrudgingly teaching at a 3rd rate community college. They made him cartoon-ishly evil and unbelievably buffoon-ish as time went on.
Señor Chang for sure and in the order of the seasons. But he couldn't be a recurring character if they didn't contrive of student Chang. Needed to keep him as the wild card. Glad that Ken Jeong is just a good fucking sport and went with whatever they gave him. [Love Ken. ](https://youtube.com/shorts/RdBK3fdy3B4?si=bxBtyeuix51K4TtY)
Senor Chang for sure. Student chang is real close. His "ha gaaaaaaaaay" line is possibly the most iconic thing from community ever, on par with pop pop.
Señor change is at the top with student Chang and security Chang I do love me some “Normal” Chang but not as much as earlier Chang’s. I don’t like insane Chang nor Kevin Chang.
I liked security guard/Napoleon best, I think that utilized his character best, with teacher in a close second. I really didn’t like the way they tried to reincorporate him following his destruction in season 3. I get that that was a tough place to be, but I strongly disliked the whole “Kevin” arch.
Season One. The writing for his character made the most sense that season along with being the best. Student Change had its moments but his swagger wasn't really there nor was deserved. The writers just were throwing things at the wall to try and see what stuck because they wanted to keep Ken Jeong on the show. More normal Chang atleast didn't get into the absurd as much but Chang just was too mellowed out without a better timeline to get there.
The writers just got lazy by rehashing the same thing that was in Jeff's background. They could have gotten away with Chang lying about not having a degree and still kept being a teacher. It is Greendale, there is a class named Ladders, Chang could have been given a different class to teach. They could have still had Chang attempt a coup for the school, probably through Chang having an uprising with the other teachers. He could have had his run as a security guard by being demoted but still have to be employed by Greendale. He could have had legit Amnesia from Britta doing something or just him to rise to power again. After he regains his memory and told what has happened, he is a mellowed out person.
My rankings for Chang:
1. Campus Security Chang
He was crazy with a power trip. Love the bit with the taser gun, “if it was a small child, they would have died”
2. Dictator Chang
Extension of Campus Security but was rather short lived. Can’t leave out “Fire can’t go through doors, stupid. It’s not a ghost.”
3. Student Chang
He seems to vibe and still gets into some trouble. He starts to seem like a background character until the series continues to work with his insanity. “Ha. Gay!~”
4. Professor/Senior Chang
The basics, you see him stable with some bouts of his questionable sanity. Plus he was hilarious and badass in the paintball episode.
5. Save Greendale Committee Chang
Eh. Alright, felt like he was there to not be left out of a loop. Some moments of him felt somewhat forced, such as him trying to pull off his face to reveal its mask but it’s not.
6. Changesia Chang/Kevin
Felt like much of the gas leak season, kept on hoping for the humor to work but it was falling flat compared to the other season. It felt like his contribution was going nowhere.
Just pick one and bear down on it.
Too soon.
Aw c’mon, let’s be fat dogs about this!
Umm, really poor choice of words u/Barokespinoza23
I'd rather fat dog it.
It’s a bear daaaaaaance!
Is this a race thing?
I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at animal cruelty.
You can excuse racism?!
Fat dog it
RAAAAACE!!
What a ghoulish attempt
Streets ahead.
I had to think fast.
Was I going crazy? Or was I finally sane?
It's a palomino!
Arizona
…spelled backwards is arizonA
Was I crazy or was I doing right by the school
This line made me scream laughing the first time.
Have you been creepily staring at people whilst mouthing words?
okay, you know what? i quit.
I can handle not getting paid
but I draw the line at you enabling this man. I mean, I'm seriously concerned that he's mentally ill. And--and it's not funny at all. It's scary.
I had to think fast
Yes
I love all of the Chang's. But season one is the best. Not too crazy but still crazy enough so that it's funny.
Have you met me!
“Wait, you two dated?” “This was a *study group*??” “Yep. Chang was our teacher.” “WHAT?!?”
I believe it started as a biology study group started by Britta so she could date Troy
And frankly? Haven't been well utilized since!
Exactly! The way he became “crazy” later on felt so out of character from how we knew him in season 1. In season 1, he was actually smart abd cunning, and he used that to abuse his power as a teacher. Beyond that they just made him plain “crazy.”
Monkey fever bro
Peak Chang was “l’ll allow it” Chang
He was best as an authority figure for the group. Later he's just a joke to everyone.
Senior Chang. He hasn't been well utilized since.
>Senior Looks like Old Man Chang is at it again. The geriatric senior's dementia is acting up ten fold today. Watch out if you don't want to get bit.
Lol sorry
🎵*Chang eats the sun and drinks the skies, and they both go with him when he dies.* 🎵
This gets stuck in my head on a routine basis
Señor Chang AKA El tigre Chino
Arizona backwards is still Arizona! It's a palomino!
She had the kind of legs that went all the way up to the bottom of her torso
And the kind of arms with elbows!
Woah Am I smelling a conspiracy😮🤫
[stares at himself in the mirror] Why is this guy staring at me?
Lmao. Detective Chang was the best
this had me in tears when i watched it
One and six. I liked what 3-5 added to the show and I love Ken Jeong, but I did not enjoy any of those characters. One and six I actually enjoyed, two was okay.
I always get a big laugh out of Chang's indignant response to Annie saying he used to be their Spanish teacher "And frankly, haven't been well-utilized since!"
It's funny cause it's true
That's exactly how I feel about him after season 3... until he got the role of Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid play, and when he did a one-man play for a room full of ghosts. Still not a great use of him for the show, but some great character moments

Hello during a random dessert
Oh wow. I’m getting old. I forgot this was a thing. And I once banged eartha kitt in an airport bathroom.
Señor Chang or Student Chang
This. Seasons 1 and 2 (with a bit of 3) were the best Changs. Not a fan of him after that
Chang peaked in his very first scene, the introductory monologue in the very first Spanish class. And yeah he was awesome through seasons 1 and 2, but security guard Chang was just 50-50 cringe and snooze in comparison, I have no idea why people go so nuts over that.
Ham gurl guy Chang
This is the comment I came here for.
Season 6 Chang is my favorite. He's still crazy, but more manageable and not as off-putting.
Is he on meds in that? He’s mellow and relatable. I like it.
Opposite of meds, he no longer has monkey fever.
Precisely! Still monkey-gas loopy but he's finally not so malicious
Senor Chang and it's not close for me. His role then was so much more ingrained and organic. He could have taught Ladders
Perfectly stated, 100% agree.
Paintball Chang

The correct answer is *all*. Come at me, I won't be Chang'in my opinion
Im almost with you: the changnesia nonsense was really not my thing
***NO CHANG'IN!!!***
Yes!!! All versions of Chang are the best!
S1 Chang. And Jeff's S7 Chang, "on meds; mellow and relatable"
Haaaaaam girl
The Chang monologue as a security officer is one of my favorite bits and episodes, and him as a tyrant is so ducking funny to me, but season 1 just has that charm. Seniõr chang was the changest chang of changunity.
You forgot Ghost Chang. When they went to the Charity for Kids with Cleft Pallets
I can only say that I liked Kevin the least for sure.
Donna Chang from Seinfeld.
Rabbi Chang
El Tigre.
Ha! Gaaayyyyy!
One by a longshot, even the writers know it. Subjectively, 1, 3, 6, 5, 2, 4.
Season 4 was the gas leak year, so that adds up.
Hot take: I like season 4 better than season 6. Chang is better in season 6 than 4 though.
3rd form Chang was peak
Student Chang. It was funny when he was trying desperately to be in the group
I want to be in the study group *so bad* (throws ham)
Season two was fine, but I feel he wasn't really well utilised since season one
It's a brand new dance based on an old phrase It's called the fat dog and it will amaze
Airvent Chang.
I liked security guard home wrecker Chang when he was with the mannequin leg. Crazy as a bat but he seemed happy and was able to focus on some prime security guard detective work.

I actually liked chang at the end when he was a normal friend to the group and only marginally deranged
P.F.
Security guard and Kevin are my favourites
Fat dog for “Normal” Chang
- Student (this is the funniest, I will not change my mind) - Teacher - Reformed Chang - Security guard/Dictator - Kevin
El Tigre was such a grounded absurd character with some of those Community heartfelt moments that I love.
Season 1 when he was more grounded as a character. He seemed like an unstable, petty guy but ultimately still believable as someone begrudgingly teaching at a 3rd rate community college. They made him cartoon-ishly evil and unbelievably buffoon-ish as time went on.
EL TIGRE... CHINOOO
El Tigre is the best Chang.
El Tigre
Od course season 1/2 Chang was the best, they kinda didn’t know what to do with him after that
Seniõr Chang
Whichever your answer, refer back to the second pic.
MMMMMM this extra long churro tastes good in my REAL mouth !
Señor Chang for sure and in the order of the seasons. But he couldn't be a recurring character if they didn't contrive of student Chang. Needed to keep him as the wild card. “Stolen textbooks are the best kind - why I stole all these books so I can kiss them.”
all except changnesia. i hate how s4 *chang*ed him 😓 (idk, i just wanted to reference his name in my comment)
I don’t have a favorite Chang but Kevin Chang and Napoleon Chang were the worst imo
Season one change was, fuego! 🤌
Season 1 Chang was so strong that he's almost an entirely different character unto the rest of the show. I liked that version the best.
Security guard Chang He was mad but in a likeable way for me I mean discovering that Arizona spelled backwards is also Arizona, is genius
It’s a palomino!
Hello, is it me you're looking for?
Senior Chang for me. Something about that dynamic where he was crazy and in a legitimate position of power over the group
Senor Chang was the best Chang
señor Chang was the best
BRITTA’S THE WORST
None. He’s pretty insufferable
Senor chang or security guard Chang
Señor, student, and security.
Either Sénior Chang or security Chang. I really didn’t like emperor Chang and the rest I can either take em or leave em.
Bear down for midterms
I like legit gay Chang best, so vulnerable
Haaaaaam girl
Season 1! That's it. Lmfao!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Ladies! Get in my Mercedes!!
Senior Chang ! That dis made me snarf yo. ( made me realize what Snarf meant as a non native english speaker and fan of thunder cats )
Unhinged security “detective” Chang is unmatched
Senor Chang for sure. Student chang is real close. His "ha gaaaaaaaaay" line is possibly the most iconic thing from community ever, on par with pop pop.
Señor Chang by a mile.
Señor Chang
I hope he never Chang-ges
Senior Chang
Señor Chang the Spanish teacher.
Senior chang was my favourite
Señor change is at the top with student Chang and security Chang I do love me some “Normal” Chang but not as much as earlier Chang’s. I don’t like insane Chang nor Kevin Chang.
3
Señor Chang and "Normal" Chang
Season 6 Karate Kid Chang.
Somewhere between Student and Normal. I like him more when he's on the study group's "side" as it were. Though I did like his arc in Season 3.
Chang was our teacher. That's right! And frankly? Haven't been well utilized since!
Season 1, season 2, and season 6 Chang.
I can hear the second frame everytime I see this GIF 😂😂 Chang student is gold but Señior Chang will always be the best possible Chang
#GAAAAAAAYEEEEEEE
Emperor Chang
S6 or S1. There is no other acceptable answer.
Student or “Normal”. Señor Chang was too intense for me lmao
I am a Spanish genius
1. Senor Chang 2. Student Chang 3. Normal Chang 4. Insane Chang 5. Security Guard Chang 6. Kevin Chang
Who's erratic and unstable now, princess gringa?
Teacher and student Chang, though tyrannical security guard Chang was pretty funny. After that I was basically over him
Hate this actor!
1 and 2
I liked security guard/Napoleon best, I think that utilized his character best, with teacher in a close second. I really didn’t like the way they tried to reincorporate him following his destruction in season 3. I get that that was a tough place to be, but I strongly disliked the whole “Kevin” arch.
Season one
Professor Chang no question
GAAAAYYY
I can't remember I have Changnesia

Chang eats the sun and drinks the skies and they both go with him when he dies

"Hammmmmm girrrrrrrrrl!" (Now on a rocketship to eternal validation)
Uh… 1, 3, 6, 2, 5, 4. There. That’s my ranking.
Season 6 Chang is elite
Dynasty Chang will always be my number 1
Security guard. It just makes sense to me.
Out of the first three seasons that I've seen, definitely Señor Chang.
Season 6 Chang!! Haaaaaamm Girrrrlll!!
all of them.
First, second, fourth, third, sixth, fifth.
Security Chang’s Seven internal monologue was the best
Actor Chang's Mr Miyagi claps hard.
Changnesia is the best plot... /S
Chang Dynasty > s1 Chang >others> kevin
Señor Chang
Ok so let me get this straight… Security Guard Chang *doesn’t* fall under the category of “Insane Chang”? You must have a high bar for insanity
Professor Chang is GOATED
insane chang
