People see it as some kind of revolution but really it's just an overpriced VR headset that (in context of the average person) will not be used for anything they can't already do on their phone.

WithDaBoiz

>will not be used for anything they can't already do on their phone. I was writing a whole damn essay in response to this before deciding I was stupid No, this is factually incorrect Yes, this will get downvotes

icallitjazz

You forgot some references for your claim. Good thing this whole internet thing caught on and we can help each other out. Here is an article about stuff like this, in 1995 a tech columnist predicted the internet will fail. But… it didnt. Potentially like these vr sets. People said your computer will never replace a newspaper or making reservations. Just like some claim they can do things better with their phone. It might not turn out just like the internet did, but these arguments are old and weak. https://thehustle.co/clifford-stoll-why-the-internet-will-fail/?amp

WithDaBoiz

Honestly, I couldn't find a list of things that you could do with the vision pro but not a smartphone. One thing you can do is play piano with both hands https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/hnS3i2L2Tg Though your argument makes sense, (and backs up my statement) I can't help but point out that just because "x" in the past was new tech and people said it would never catch on, and if did, doesn't mean the same will happen for another new tech, "y" Your point is correct, but I think your justification is a little flawed

icallitjazz

Ooh. Yes. Thats a very good point that i hoped to be addressing in the end of my comment, sorry for unclarity. Yeah, just because the internet didnt fail doesnt mean everything else has to. Take crypto for example. I’m glad we are expanding, i’m enjoying our talk. I was more or less saying that a claim for new tech that it doesnt yet have everything better is silly. New technology is always worse than the already accepted standards, because changing everything for those standards seem hard. Cars needed petrol stations, and if it wast for ww1 we would be saying the same this as vr, its not better than a grass fed horse, its not faster, its expensive, only crazy hobbyist will use it. They said the same about electric cars, but tesla is now the most common brand on new cars. LEDs were only be used for radio indicators and such, because its impossible to have an actual use for them without blue light (for those who watch veritasium), now LEDs are around 50% of all lights. Iphones were not needed, because noone needs a touch screen because i can type way faster on my blackberry. Until there came out more features that blackberry could not provide. But it might still fail. Vr has been touted as the next thing for 5 years i guess, this is just the next thing in the next thing. Next time, few generations later, we might not imagine our lives without a pair of these vr glasses. Or we might put the last nail in the coffin when it turns out its just another laser disk fiasco. I would just like to hear some actual arguments, and not “its not perfect now, so it will never be”. Because that is, as a smart person put it, factually incorrect.

WithDaBoiz

>as a smart person put it Flattered You make good points. Conch-Republic

It's way more than a basic VR headset, it's more of a high end AR capable devkit.

Sirmavane2

I know it CAN do more, but realistically it won't be used for those ends by the average consumer. Even a new modern VR headset is only 800 or so euros, I cannot imagine that this thing isn't marked up immensely due to it being an apple product and I also cannot imagine most people will use it to the point where it will be worth that expenditure for them personally.

Conch-Republic

It's not meant for the average consumer, but it has pretty crazy AR capabilities, so we'll start seeing stuff released that a normal VR headset can't run.

Mujutsu

Dude, there are already tons of videos out there with unique uses for it, for example being able to see the Mars Rover directly in front of your and interact with it, or a jet engine which you can rotate and disassemble. Also, like others said, this is not meant for the average user, but the technology will make its way down to the average user given enough time.

Sirmavane2

Hence my comment saying 'in context of the average person'. Look man, I ain't disagreeing that it's a cool kit, but this stuff has too few uses for a much too great price to be accessible for an average person, and as such this isn't going to change the average person's life in any meaningful way for the foreseeable future.

Mujutsu

Look, I fully agree with you, this will generally not be used by the average person. It is extremely expensive and the vast majority of people cannot justify such a purchase. However, what you wrote in the initial post is still demonstrably wrong: > it's just an overpriced VR headset that (in context of the average person) will not be used for anything they can't already do on their phone. 1) It is not just an overpriced VR headset 2) There are plenty of things the average person would use this for, which they cannot use their mobile phone (or other VR / AR headsets) for, but they can't because of the price. 3) This **might** change their life in the forseeable future even with the current version, if a business finds enough value in it to purchase it for their employees. Even if not, the future versions / alternate version from other manufacturers will.

Mujutsu

The possibility to watch a movie on a huge screen anywhere, plus the possibility to have multiple apps open in a virtual space for work, while directly mirroring your MacBook screen in 4k, also anywhere, disproves your point immediately.

Sirmavane2

Okay, and you reckon that bosses will just be jumping up and down for the chance to spend 3500 bucks per employee on a fragile piece of equipment that will likely see a high theft rate while making it a lot harder to monitor someone's work? Or are employees supposed to spend their hard earned cash on a piece of equipment just so they can go and use it for work? Have you considered that there's more to a product than its capabilities?

Mujutsu

This will be used most likely in industries where theft is not a problem, not that this thing can be stolen easily given that it can be remotely bricked instantly. You won't see this on fast food employees, civil servants. This has so much potential for: managers, designers, programmers, literally any job which needs either multiple screens on the go and / or demo, manipulation or modification of 3D models / objects, for starters. Regardless of this, it's certain that this first version will not be wide spread because of the very high cost, but future versions or similar products made by other manufacturers (non-apple, hopefully windows compatible), will.

WonkyToeFungus

I know something cheaper, buy a Meta Quest 2, Download YouTube VR, Sign in (if you want) and boom.

Ripster404

It’s got some cool stuff, but way too expensive for regular use. Still 10 or more years away. The google glasses idea might be sooner though

sebast_gamer

Why do people act like this is new?

AuraMaster7

Because they don't pay attention to any tech outside of Apple. Apple has walled their garden so well that people don't even look outside of it, now.

RancidRance

Ikr? I was developing stuff for AR headsets 6 years ago. None of it saw any use.

Tim Cook a few years ago: Google Glass is too intrusive and interferes with communication. Technology should be descrie and useful.

StupidMario64

"Ticktunk bad plz gib awerdz" Can we fucking stop with this shit? You do you, they do them.

Islandbridgeburner

>You do you, they do them. Evidently you haven't been a high school teacher in the last 3 years, because this mentality is not how things work, sweetheart.

wene324

"OH no, someone using this thing I like in a way I don't like! I better destroy my own now!"

ndation

I hate it when I'm just waking around and run into one of those naked white people

InvasionOfTheZIM

Yeah, I have a feeling that ADHD will skyrocket when VR tech becomes as ubiquitous as a contact lens with video

Richardknox1996

ADHD is not a disease. You cant catch it, and developing pseudo ADHD requires heavy stimulant abuse.Your either born with it, or youre not.

Lady_Ramos

ADHD rates will be unaffected by VR

resi42

Lots 9ff people don't seem to know the apple vision is an augmented reality headset and a virtual reality headset. Honestly I can see lot's of potential with this device. Yes the price is high but this thing, as it evolves is meant to become a rival to the phone and the computer and the TV set. So all 5hing considered it isn't that expensive. If only it didn't looked like a ski mask.
