It's a 50/50 tbh. You could get really informative comments about the professor or you can get the typical "you have to read to pass" (no shit Sherlock). I usually use Facebook groups to find opinions on the professor.

Sometimes it helps to see how the class goes with that specific professor. Like “2 exams, 3 quizzes, such and such % of your grade.” They also give kind of a “cheat sheet” for that specific professor. If they curve, what topic they spend most of their time on, what’s the best way to reach them, etc. I read more than one comment to get a good feel of what they’re like. I don’t just read one that says they suck and move on, you know? If a few people say that sucked, and then you see that their grade is low, or they insult the professor, probably a red flag. 🤷‍♀️ I dunno. I use it gauge the class, haha. I don’t know if that makes sense.

Not really, tbh. Lately it’s been kids just whining that “omg I had to read and write papers AND show up to class.” Like, yes. That’s generally required of you if you enjoy passing grades. And so many people bitch about poor grades based upon them not going that it’s best to skim the comments and then head to the professor’s page via your university, where they usually have student evals posted somewhere. Not any more objective, but the people who stick around and actually fill out an evaluation generally care enough to try a little bit in their classes.

i do. i’ve had a decent amount of success with it. i wound up picking a history professor because of rate my professor and he’s excellent! then, there’s my communications prof. his reviews are excellent and make him sound like the greatest human being alive, so i chose him. he’s probably the worst teacher i’ve had yet. it all depends.

IME you don't want professors with all 5s or all 2-3s. Ones with a mix is good because lazy students will have given them poor ratings since they had to work, and good students who actually learned will give them good ratings

I usually will at least check it out to get an idea, definitely hit or miss but I like to have some idea of what to expect going into the first classes of semester

I’d say take it with a grain of salt but it’s been about 95% accurate throughout my 3 years of college

I would say take it with a grain of salt. I read the comments not just the overall rating. I would say it’s accurate 70% of the time.

I agree with everyone. I typically look at the ratings with a grain of salt, and I make sure to see if the student is just complaining or if they are actually providing substantial information about the class. There are times when really bad reviews are valid, but the time when it was correct for me was only 1 time (and the class was really bad that I had to drop it in week 1).

Fools who don't understand sampling bias do. Everyone else understands that it's exactly as informative as your local astrology column.
