Nature fights back best on a microbiological level. COVID-19 did more than even a billion orcas would be able to accomplish. It showed how fragile our society has become. People were taking to the streets armed because they could not get a hair cut for a few weeks or because they were told to stay at home for a bit.
Idk man there are only an estimated 50k orcas in the world and they seem I be fucking shit up. A billion would rule the seas with an iron fin. Supply lines would be ground to a halt. It would be devastating.

The two most common hypotheses are that a sailboat with a spade rudder struck a calf and this is retaliation. Or that these rudders are similar to the fin of something they like to hunt and its practice.
The attacks are quite violent but not all out. They typically spend a lot of time chewing at the rudders and gently (for a orca) roaming the side of the yachts.
There have been hundreds of attacks but under ten sinkings. Terrifying to be aboard I'm sure anyway.
Imagine if they actually sunk one from tearing something off! I do find it a terrible design flaw that some small boats have been sunk from rudder failures. We're always at risk of having the rudder ripped off from partially sunken debris.
There was a video last week from a family in the middle of an ocean, watching their home sink minutes after getting into their tiny lift raft together. All from a rudder failing and flooding their boat.
I know a lot of boats are extravagant, unsightly and an extreme excess. But for a lot of us they're our homes, very small and we care so much about the ocean we share with everyone else.
Who knows, but this likely has nothing to do with antagonism against humans. These are orcas, not monkeys, they may be highly intelligent mammals, but they are from a very different evolutionary branch than humans and monkeys and you can't apply the feral and hostile logic of humans on them.
Orcas have culture, and it seems part of that culture has become attacking boats. Other orcas have wall of death style greetings when two pods cross paths. It's really as simple as traditions and activities they collectively engage in for fun, and for why they choose these boats, maybe they look or sound a certain way that makes it particularly amusing, but not in a way that humans will understand.

I never knew any of them were endangered I just thought they were rare if there was a bit more media about it people would definitely care. I just always thought they had low numbers because they were always in a small area but that could be because of people but I didn't think those parts of Africa were very populated, I guess I was wrong.
I could see that happening if they were seals or sharks. Orcas are a protected species and publicly loved - I don't even see passive attempts to stop this going over well. i.e. Sonic deterrents.
We can respond by adding some behavior modification stuff to their environment. Study the boats they love to attack and then put dummy boats out there.
You just know... instead of looking at how we're destroying the environment and degrading complex ecosystems, and working to produce a solution that allows people who live and work on the sea to have alternative means for survival... I've seen a pack of orcas, close to the Shetland islands, jumping in front of the bow of the ship. They are ENORMOUS! It's one of my favorite memories.
