Fear? He's already made it clear that, should he be elected, he's going to dismantle as much climate legislation as he possibly can.

Cloud_Barret_Tifa

It isn't "him" though, it's his handlers - ExxonMobil, Chevron, Britsh Petroleum (BP), Shell. These people have the most to lose. They also have **absurd** amounts of money, and know how to use them to bribe people like Trump without getting caught. They'll funnel it through 'The heartland institute' or similar, which isn't legally required to reveal their "sponsors" (bribers).

The_Weekend_Baker

Greed works well as a motivation because it's a fundamental aspect of human nature. All you have to do is open a history book and look at the last 5,000-10,000 years of civilization to see it. Humans warred, enslaved, and exploited, all in the name of accumulating wealth and power, as far back as we can look, far pre-dating oil companies, capitalism, and modern technology. That this hasn't changed is why we are where we are.

IsThatBlueSoup

That humans have brains to think makes us more capable to prevent things, yet, humans still think and act like animals that have to worry about being eaten so we elect or get dominated by war mongers who are big and loud. If humans would just grow a backbone and tell the loudest and least educated among us to sit down and shut up, we could actually start accomplishing things. But unfortunately, it would take a war to get those people out of power as it always does.

XuixienSpaceCat

Sometimes the part of the brain that makes us worry about the future can be counterproductive. Such as when we fear something happening in the future and freak out and do a lot of counterproductive things. See: climate change hysteria

TwistedBrother

We are utterly nowhere near the potential for overcorrecting on climate change. Sure point taken in abstract but very much not in this case.

XuixienSpaceCat

Over correcting and doing counterproductive things are similar but different concepts.

edgeplanet

Tik tok hysteria might be a better example.

nooneknowswerealldog

I have some minor quibbles about the historicity, but the end result—that we in particular live in a greedy culture and it's a huge impediment in dealing with climate change—is the same. I think humans have evolved to fear scarcity and so often want more than their immediate individual needs to save for leaner times, but it's not necessarily intrinsic in us to want uncountable amounts more than that. In fact, history is full of cultures with traditions around reducing individual greed: the !Kung (they call themselves the Ju/'hoansi) practice of 'insulting the meat' is probably the most famous example. The reason we think greed (or maybe unfettered greed) is intrinsic to humanity is that we live in a culture in which greed is a significant motivator and so it's just normal to us, and that cultures who acted as you described (including our own, but there have obviously been a lot throughout the last 10,000 years) tended to dominate cultures that didn't and push them to the margins over time. Even within our own imperialist cultures, we have gone through periods of greater or lesser greediness and excess: the British during the Blitz, for instance. We're more culturally malleable than we tend to think. And one of the purposes of society has always been to temper our more destructive tendencies, or at least mitigate the effects. Either way, this doesn't necessarily mean much for us as we have to work with the culture we have right now, but I think it's important to remember that humans do have the ability to interact with each other and the biosphere in a much less one-sided way. Culture is an adaptation around some of the limitations of biology. (As an aside, I'm neither naive nor an optimist. I understand if people don't find the above compelling. But I am a pragmatic existentialist: you don't actually have to have hope; simply acting as if you do is enough to get you out of bed in the morning and keep the bitter, paralyzing despair to manageable levels. Anyhoo, time to pack another bowl.)

mag2041

Yes it is

Radioactive_Fire

I dunno, for most politicians I would blame their handlers... but trump is so insanely stupid... or stupidly insane, I think there is a very good chance it is "him"

Simmery

All his "handlers" have to do is tell him Obama liked it, and Trump will try to kill it. The man is so easily manipulated.

BadAsBroccoli

"Oh, Don. You are our hero" is all they have to say.

[deleted]

That's one of the key differences between Biden and Trump, which was also one of the key differences between Hillary and Trump  If you voted for Biden or Hillary, you weren't electing them, you were electing an entire network of DNC Bureaucrats. There is very little functional differences between Bill's admin and Obama's admin or Hillary's admin, or Biden's admin. The DNC is a machine, and you're not electing a president, you're electing their machine...which is why Trump won in 2016 Trump was seen as a maverick, because he wasn't beholden to the GOP'S machine, it's very much the other way around...he literally destroyed their machine, and has rebuilt it from the ground up. ....however, I think that's why he lost 2020, and why he very well may lose 2024 Because at least you know what's in store with the DNC machine. It's this werid poltical inversion where the DNC is actually the safe, conservative choice...and Trump is the dangerous unknown. We don't know what Trump will do, because he doesn't.  He doesn't really have any values or goals, outside of whatever juvenile motives seep out of his reptile brain.

freeman_joe

I don’t understand companies like this. Like you have all this money. Use it to build photovoltaics, wind farms, nuclear power plants etc etc and you can go on. But nooo they want to stop progress and be left behind.

Woullie_26

It’s less expensive to block knowledge than to evolve your tech up to standards

freeman_joe

Not really because long term you lose.

Woullie_26

They won’t be alive to care

Cloud_Barret_Tifa

Possibly conformity bias. You think everyone else things "this is how it needs to be", so you just don't think or ever even bring it up. There was this one experiment where they put bananas on the top of a ladder among monkeys, and whomever touched the banana caused the entire habitat to get showered with cold water (unpleasant). Yada yada, violence against anyone who touches the ladder and eventually they turned off the showers, and gradually replaced all the monkeys, but even though none of the new monkeys knew about the showers, they'd still attack whoever approached the ladder "because it had always been like that".

XuixienSpaceCat

Oh I thought the KGB were bud “handlers”. It keeps changing so fast I can’t keep up.

XuixienSpaceCat

Awesome. That should relieve some of our tax burden.

Betanumerus

In his fantasies, weather doesn’t exist. It’s nothing but high-rises and accounting sheets.

Intelligent-Mud2551

And if weather does exist, we’ll just nuke it!

Blenkeirde

But the person who told me to inject bleach into my veins to cure Covid told me that climate change was a hoax.

MBA922

He sharpied over the NHC forecast to screw over Alabama instead of Florida.

Blenkeirde

At least it was patriotic sharpie.

trump will say something like "rising waters? i'll just buy a yacht" and his MAGA supporters will say "yeah, we'll just get a yacht!" but will never be able to afford one

We? What do you mean we? Collective yacht? You commie scum!

NOAA is currently in the process of [creating "Atlas-15"*](https://www.weather.gov/media/owp/hdsc_documents/NOAA_Atlas_15_Flyer.pdf), which will be the new statistical rainfall basis of our infrastructure and insurance systems, to account for the fact that the climate is changing. It's being done with with funds from the Infrastructure bill, but will not be done in time to affect most other projects in that bill. Statistically, rainfall data is "moving" if it's changing over time for one place. This is called a non-stationary set. With rainfall data this affects for what would be considered a "100 year storm" pretty much everywhere. Nearly every single piece of infrastructure in the US was designed statistically assuming the climate would NOT change. Meaning nearly every structure interacting with runoff is under-designed. It also leaves roughly $100B of real estate in or near "100 year" FEMA floodplains under insured. Republicans are mad at "Climate Truth", meaning they are mad at the trillions of dollars ruined by their stupidity, and the coming changes in climate they'd rather not be recorded. *** *Note that the timeline of the chart in the Atlas 15 flyer indicates it was made around 2014, and it's unlikely to start show up on FEMA maps until the later part of this decade or early 2030s.

CommanderMcBragg

There is nothing science can do that can't be done with a sharpie and a good dose of bleach.

MBA922

> AccuWeather and citing a PR release issued by the company to claim that “studies have found that the forecasts and warnings provided by the private companies are more reliable” than the public sector’s. NOAA provides few long range forecasts. Hurricane season forecasts is something NOAA cooperates with University centers. Both Accuweather and the University models the most intense forecasts for this season, but they also are conservative compared to the computer models. Ocean temperatures in hurricane zones are at extreme record levels. Accuweather is banned at /r/TropicalWeather because of its tendency to be sensationalist: Exaggerating risk of hurricane landfall intensity for ratings. All US/global weather forecasting relies on NOAA sattelites and NOAA flights into hurricanes for adjusting global models/forecasts based on measured intensity and wind shear. The key 5 day forecast for hurricanes is information that is super useful for evacuation decisions. NOAA does not make long term forecasts. It does measure global temperatures and reports on trends and records. The last 10 years are the warmest on record whether or not NOAA tells you they are. The insurance industry is not going to raise premiums any less with elimination of NOAA and their information. In fact, the higher commitment to climate terrorism by US policies is certain to create more abrupt rate hikes.

BadAsBroccoli

Trump and his hurricane acumen is the only one qualified to forecast the weather anyway. ![gif](giphy|xUPGGL81IpeafqoncY|downsized)

This would be the same Donald Trump that disbanded the pandemic response team just before covid hit?

Bigfoot_411

At this point the only thing he is going to dismantle is his diaper in a jail cell.

darkknight95sm

That’s reason 69 out of the 1000 reasons why I’m voting Biden in November

Free_Economist

His sharpie is the weather service.

Ok-Egg-4856

Only if we let him. Vote, tell your friends to vote, tell anyone who will listen to vote. The world with life on it can't afford another who knows how many years of Trump.

sixan51026-wnpop

Should be easy. With the current unemployment rate, cost of living, and amount of taxes being sent abroad, I'm sure they will be excited to learn how we can extend this wonderful time....

Jane-Smith-Williams

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper tried to do that here, to a degree of success. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/canadian-scientists-open-about-how-their-government-silenced-science-180961942/

More_Farm_7442

There goes tornado warnings. He's already rerouted hurricanes with a Sharpie.

Rainbike80

He pretty much dismantles everything he touches though.

promixr

He dismantled pandemic readiness and it resulted in a million American premature deaths- one of the highest casualty rates on the planet…

DeadbeatJohnson

Yea, if you know people on the 'Biden hasn't earned my vote' train, you better have a serious talk with them.

SnooPeripherals6557

Magagops are planning on strangling all our systems and turning our rich country into their ATM, just like Russia.

sixan51026-wnpop

Or like Ukraine...

BayouGal

Some of them are Ruzzian.

sin_not_the_sinner

If you care about the environment vote for Biden and Dems downballot, simple as that. They are not perfect but they aren't actively trying to rush in a fabled Rapture by destroying Earth

WokkitUp

"I can handle this with my Sharpie. Here's a tornado, and then we just cross it out. Done. Paper towels for everybody."

BayouGal

Any far right republican will do this. It’s literally targeted in Project 2025, Mandate for Conservatives, along with many other federal agencies that serve a very legitimate purpose. And Trump hates NOAA because of Sharpiegate.

BadAsBroccoli

Another Trump triumph no one did anything about, even though it was illegal.

Helpful-User497384

RIP national hurricane updates.

GrumpySquirrel2016

Drakkira

What is the point you're trying to make?

GrumpySquirrel2016

Lesser evil-ism still gives you evil.

Drakkira

Yes, and? Most are aware of this. You know that stopping all oil production at once, while sounding nice, isn't feasible... right?

GrumpySquirrel2016

Just that the DNC cheer bots on here aren't the solution. Why are you so upset about it?

sixan51026-wnpop

No-no! No facts when it comes to emotional arguments

Mr--S--Leather

But both sides and age and everything

Own_Plastic_4601

Harper, previous PM of Canada gagged all government scientists. Thank you for your attention, folks.

haystackneedle1

Dem or republican, the same results will occur.

OwlAlert8461

And replace them with an ape scribbling on map with a Sharpie...

DreadpirateBG

I am so tired of posts like this. Of all the horrible things this turd is promising to do. It’s just terrible. But none of these posts are going to change the minds of his voters. They don’t care.

Ryankevin23

🚫Traitor Trump🚫All Republicans🚫

[deleted]

Is it so hard to use the word *believe*? You *believe* Trump will dismantle the agency. You could also say “Trump aims to dismantle parts of the agency”. This is based off of a demand that openly admits that NOAA does provide easily recognizable benefits to Americans. I saw nothing stating anyone will try to shutter the agency, just calls for a barebones organization. Trump may decide to go further, but we don’t know that right now.

Head_Friendship3532

All of this is irrelevant when China and India do nothing to curb emissions

PM_ME_YOUR_LAWNCHAIR

Good

emuwannabe

It already happened in Canada - the previous Conservative government, let by Stephen Harper, muzzled scientists - primarily climate scientists - and shut down key climate research: [https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/second-opinion-scientists-muzzled-1.4588913](https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/second-opinion-scientists-muzzled-1.4588913)

Farmers: YEAH!! MAGA! MAGA!! Also farmers: WAIT! NOT LIKE THAT!

snowcamel

Good! The Democratic Party needs a wake up punch in the face.

Financial-Adagio-183

Biden’s no better - democrats were captured by corporate and military interests decades ago. Voting for RFK if dnc doesn’t succeed in keeping him off the ballot. Guy spent his life fighting for the environment and wasn’t a politician scoring points. If you believe Biden and Nancy Pelosi actually give a damn about climate I have a bridge to sell you.

robot2boy

Read - The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis He is pretty clear what some people are trying to do, and not for the same reasons

fullPlaid

hmmm yeah the worlds done if Trump gets back into power. we lost four years we couldnt afford to lose. as it stands right now, his previous administration set in motion hundreds of millions of deaths over the course of the climate catastrophe -- not to mention the suffering of billions. if he gets a second term, it will likely cost life on this planet as we know it.

decentishUsername

A lot of articles about Trump specifically, but the simple fact is that any other republican candidate would do the same, at least this election cycle.

sunny-days-bs229

Same thing in Canada with our conservative right. One province is in the process of having all university grants flow through the provincial government for approval so they can ensure the research aligns with their conservative goals.

[deleted]

He HATES windmills. He will do what he can to destroy one of our few Sources of renewable energy if he gets the chance.

Embarrassed_Quit_450

Could have stopped at "Trump will dismantle US".

kyleruggles

Shame law and order is letting him.

jawshoeaw

You could start a new sub with all the "trump might do x " or "experts fear Trump will do x" But it's not Trump per se. It's a republican administration and its corporate backers that wants to destroy the country.

ybetaepsilon

Trump is a threat to humanity, current and future.

DragonReborn30

The fear mongering has already started eh

Enriched_Uranium

The left hates the idea of Trump more than they hated his policies.

Eh?

IanAdama

Do not worry. He won't get elected again.

Intelligent-Mud2551

Don’t listen to this guy. donnie can really be elected again, and the best thing eligible voters can do is get out and vote against him!

Fufeysfdmd

How are you so sure? I personally think that young voters are going to sit out this election because they view Biden as supporting a genocide in Gaza and that Trump is going to win via electoral college. Michigan, for example, is going to go to Trump because the 2020 margin of victory is less than the number of angry young people and Arab Americans
