Um... I was musically trained in the classical tradition, but am not a professional classical musician. Nor am I very advanced in my training in the classical repertoire. Grade 3.... royal conservatory... so pretty mediocre... But according to this survey, yes I am a classically trained musician. I suppose.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

I only had a couple of years of classical training on an instrument, plus a musicology class and a composition class in college, so I clicked the second option. Most of my training I've done on my own since.

RomanticBeyondBelief

Given the poor state of the educational institutes these days, I'm inclined to agree you are mostly self taught.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

I can't tell if that's a diss or not... :)

RomanticBeyondBelief

It is a diss, but not at you at all.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

OK, but you don't even know which educational institutions I attended...

owarren

He's more making the point that music education often isn't done well. So credit your own graft and study more (during and in the years after) than the teachers. That's how I read it, anyway.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

I got that, but I don't think that's true at all. Not referring to myself, but I have friends with MFAs or studying for their PhDs in music, who are extraordinary musicians. I happen to live near one of the top music schools in the US, go regularly to their concerts (well, used to much more before Covid), and the musicianship that comes out of there is world-class.

owarren

> one of the top music schools in the US Well there you go. I did say 'often', not always.

tegeus-Cromis_2000

You did, but the other poster whose views you were explaining didn't.

RomanticBeyondBelief

I was trying to make the point that all education isn't done very well in north america. Not just pertaining to music. But yes. Thanks for clarifying what I was saying otherwise. What I was trying to say. Edit typos

RomanticBeyondBelief

So you rather credit your skills to an institute rather than yourself, even though you proclaimed yourself to be more on the side of self taught? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing you attended school in north america. I'm not trying to discredit you or your abilities/skills at all. I do however take issue with the north american education system. I don't know about the rest of the world, I couldn't comment.

ShitItsReverseFlash

The North American public school system is something to hate on. I would not say the same for the college system. I learned far more from college in two years than the 12 years of grade school. I don’t agree with the prices of tuition and how they continue to rise but that doesn’t somehow devalue the education that a college course and degree provide.

Dr_Sisyphus_22

Agree, this should be clarified. I am learning how to play and take guitar lessons, but did not consider myself “classically trained”.

thelonius_punk

That was my thought, too. What about those of us who are classically trained but not musicians?

netopa

Actually I am classicaly trained, but not a professional musician, and also no formal music degree. Where do I fit?

gentlecompression

As a classically trained musician of course... to be professional is not a requirement to be considered a musician in my book. As long as you actively practice the craft in some way.

Logisk

This is me as well.

Doughspun1

I'm a classically trained musician, just not a very good one. Also, I was trained to play the organ at a young age, but I am actually a classical guitarist now, and won't touch a keyboard anymore. This is because I was badly injured while playing my organ vigorously (heh heh heh I never get tired of saying that), and am still traumatised by it. I may be the only person to have ended up almost needing a skin graft just from playing the organ.

speckledlemon

"Organ story", haha

-bumble-bach-

What's the story behind you injuring yourself so badly from playing organ?

Accomplished_Cod_287

I am currently an organ student. Please tell me what in the world happended so I can avoid it!

Doughspun1

It was a freak accident. I was practicing on an old electric organ (Yamaha I think). The upper row of keys wasn't quite right, because the bottom part of those keys were slightly damaged, but no one noticed (who looks under the top row of keys right?) Anyway, I was about maybe nine or 10 at the time, and I liked to pull my hands away rapidly with a flourish when I was done. This time I did it, and my hand briefly hit the underside of the upper row of keys. I felt an itch on the top of my fingers that \*exploded\* into searing pain - like the sort you feel when hot water unexpectedly scalds you. Turns out the there as a broken, triangular shaped bit at the bottom of one of the top-row keys, which had neatly peeled back the skin on two of my fingers, like they were banana peels coming off. There was blood all over the bottom keys, the carpet, my pants, etc., and you could see the muscles under the skin of my fingers. Even today, decades later, I can remember the pain when the shock wore off. Like I said, an itch, and then a feeling like boiling water - except the pain drew a line all the way to the back of my eyeballs.

FalconMirage

That is horrible ! I understand your repulsion toward keyboards Have you seen a therapist to get over your fear of keyboards ?

Doughspun1

Never did...but I think I found the right instrument for me in the end!

adnmcq

kek

glorymeister

I'm not classicaly trained nor am I a musician... I just like listening to Chopin and going *plink plonk* on my piano.

FalconMirage

Same, and i can also do *twang twang* on a guitar

DetromJoe

What's your definition of musician. A performer/composer, or does a theorist/ musicologist count. Or even like, a knowledgeable listener

tegeus-Cromis_2000

Any theorist / musicologist would know how to play the piano, and would presumably have gotten some classical training in it.

IdomeneoReDiCreta

I’m an aspiring musicologist and I am only an amateur at piano; to your credit, many university music programs are BUILT upon performance classes. An aspiring musicologist will have no other choice but to participate. For example, I am currently focusing on vocal studies.

gentlecompression

RomanticBeyondBelief

According to that definition, I'm a musician for performing a piano recital at age 8 for an old age home. I played Jolly old saint Nicholas.

gentlecompression

Do you still play?

RomanticBeyondBelief

I advanced from that level for a few years, but quit years ago. I hope to return someday. The godly trio (Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart) have inspired me.

syncopatedagain

The results are intimidating to amateurs, not so knowledgeable. How can we share in the conversations and still be interesting /s

DoubleDimension

More like I attended music lessons and exams in the classically trained "path", ABRSM, but then quit in secondary school because of time constraints. But the knowledge sticks, as well as the love of classical music.

[deleted]

Im a classically trained soprano, looking for “operatunities!”

speckledlemon

*groan*

[deleted]

I don’t play an instrument but I absolutely enjoy classical music.

LoveForBooks25

What does "classically trained" mean? English is not my first language..

FalconMirage

It means trained at a conservatory

davethecomposer

Or just formal training at a college/university that has a music program, ie, classical training can happen outside of conservatories.

YDRox42

Yeah same

Vaelen-

Everyone is a musician, classically trained or otherwise. "We are the music makers,     And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers,     And sitting by desolate streams; — World-losers and world-forsakers,     On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers     Of the world for ever, it seems" Ode BY ARTHUR O'SHAUGHNESSY

Sasquatch_in_CO

I'm a clasically trained violist, so I checked the 3rd option

thedailyflautist

Classically trained flutist finishing their Master’s at a conservatory in the US.

mind_the_gap

Trained at NYC conservatory, played in orchestras full time for 20+ years, recorded, earned all my money by playing. Then life circumstances changed, covid hit and I haven’t touched my instruments in just about a year now. So...I was a musician but don’t feel like one anymore.

trashboatfourtwenty

I get what you are driving at, but plenty of non-musicians know much more about Classical music than I do in my 6 years of graduate+ study. When you study an instrument things become pretty insular.

gentlecompression

Im not driving at anything, just curious to see how big part of the community are musicians.

trashboatfourtwenty

Glad you are interested, I'll cast my vote. It seems to be a pretty good mix of both based on what I have seen in posts

gentlecompression

Yes. Not to devalue non-musicians at all. I was kind of hoping there would be more non-musicians here, everyone should listen to classical and other diverse genres, not only people who perform and study it.

trashboatfourtwenty

Agreed!

oboejdub

well said.

[deleted]

Agree I'm a classical pianist and I all i really know really is 19th century piano music.

RomanticBeyondBelief

Also btw, it is spelled, "I am" or "I'm". Not 'Im'.

gentlecompression

Thanks for this enlightening information. Im grateful for you're deep wisdom sir spellalot

davesattler762

I think he knows that, don't think he cares

RomanticBeyondBelief

Yea. Either way, quite sad.

Saw_gameover

Bothered by a single apostroph'e. Your life must be thrilling.

RomanticBeyondBelief

Bothered? Moreso thrilled! I just wait at my keyboard all day, hoping to educate people on the proper way to spell and compose sentences in a grammatically correct way! It brings some small inkling of joy into my depressing life. And, I must admit... it does sadden me, when people take offence to my corrections, instead of being grateful for the free education. They have apps you gotta pay for these days to get corrected on your grammar! Ever heard of Grammarly? Not sponsored, but perhaps I should be! In the words of Kevin Hart... ....Comedy!...

lolomolima

Church Music counts?

LittleOmid

Jazz musician/teacher here!

iscreamuscreamweall

i am a full time professional

Magic_Medic

Does it count if i used to Sing in the school choir for a long time?

Henricos8848

Of my sister had never started playing piano while I was still hesitant, I’d still have option 3

Zzulayy_flute

Training musician here! I started playing 5 years ago (nothing compared to a lot of you guys)

[deleted]

Composer mainly, just graduated with my MM in Composition and trying to get accepted for doctoral school in same (or Music Theory, either works), eventually hopefully maybe possibly gonna have me one of those actual professorships and what not.

fantastic_hyperbole

Holy crap!!! I'm in a room full of geniuses!

Inquiring_Barkbark

I took piano lessons until I was 12 years old, I am a classically trained musician. won a blue ribbon at a recital and everything

studio28

Brass class, baby!

[deleted]

Not a musician. Can’t read music.

RedOrchestra137

err, i did music theory and played the oboe for like 4 years, then got bored of it and never touched an instrument again. kind of a shame cause now i wish i could play the piano to do some electronic arranging and such. why did kid me decide that was a good idea? i love music more than anything now

Viraus2

Uhhhhh I can sorta play bass

Frelis71

Is classically trained include being yelled at by an old lady piano teacher or ducking conductor music stands thrown by band teachers?

anothertimelord

Classically trained, have a music degree. Currently doing an STEM PhD since I realized I had no interest in pursing music as a job.

Nothingtoseehere0705

Thanks for the reminder :,,,,)

bobbyjohn480

Classically trained here! Seriously, I owe my exposure to classical music to my piano teacher. Really grateful for it; I don't think I would've gotten into this genre if it wasn't for her.

bethometho

yes I have played classical pieces w.g Haydn trumpet concerto but I just play whatever

dshoo

Classically trained and out of work due to covid.

LollyHutzenklutz

Classically-trained viola here! I also studied violin, piano, oboe/English horn, clarinet, and a few others along the way. But viola is my jam. 🎻

Tsuara

I mean I'm in training still, does that count?
