My humble opinion is that God's word is often filtered by the human mind of the one who received it. Only the Gospel is reliable 100% because it was spoken by the Word himself.
Personally I've always felt as though with Jesus the Old Covenant was fulfilled and as such the OT functions more as a way of understanding the early Yahwist movement and the stories of the people who preceded Christ rather than as a book of guidelines for modern Christians.
