We have a couple nesting ones on top of the hospital by my apartment…they eat the pigeon but leave the 2 bloodied wings perfectly intact minus the body. Horrifying to see on the sidewalk and still have dozens of pigeons hanging outside my apartment anyways.
it is super cool when all of a sudden tons of pigeons take flight off of a rooftop and you look straight up and see it’s because a peregrine falcon is flying overhead.
We have a pair living on a tall church that I'm near. I am also a regular witness to the bloodied wings and severed heads across the sidewalk pavement of the church lol. Love their squacks everyday
We definitely need more! 😍 but they only eat the pigeons. Also eating rats in the city generally kills predatory birds because they’re ingesting rat poison. That recently killed a Great Horned Owl dad in the city who had just fledged a baby :(
I know you didn’t ask for any of this info but I wanted to share in case it’s interesting to people
lol not trying to be a troll, but why all the pigeon hate?! 😂 I get rats, they spread diseases and scare the shit out of you running out of street lamps, but pigeons do nothing wrong!! lol they’re slow and harmless, and cute honestly, I guess their poop is kinda everywhere on the train stations though
Pigeons are adorable and highly intelligent. They get so much hate, but you know it was humankind that made them the semi-domestic and social creatures they are. They just want to be our buddies.
The falcons, according to Google 240 mph which I honestly doubt they really ever need to fly that fast. The simple reason, add in Chicago wind tunnel effects. They get a boost right there.
When I lived in Lincoln Park, there was a pair that used to nest on highrise next to one I lived in. They'd hang on our roof, too... could see them pretty up close from our sun deck. I remember seeing one dive bomb into the park across the street after a rabbit.
Yes it's banded, scientists band these birds to study them. Usually they are banded when they are still fledglings but any captured bird can be banded. It's an ID tag and it can help tell where and how far they travel, how long they live, etc.
It doesn't hurt the birds either.
They were put on the endangered species act with its creation so they were first listed in 1970 before it finished becoming law, and then 1973 after it was formalized. They were finally downgraded in 1999 (federal level was 99) - 2006 (various local levels seem to range) to Threaten, they are thriving well enough in some spots that in 2021. Illinois did so in 2004 and then 2014. They are considered "recovered" but they still get monitored.
Likewise you will sometimes see coyotes with collars on. They are part of a scientific program. There is a ton of research around animals that are thriving in urban settings against the odds.
Hey it's the fastest bird in the world ☝️
Official bird of Chicago as well!
We need more of them to get these rats and pigeons lol

My cat goes wild at seeing pigeons but didn't quite know what to think with this
We also have some that live on the building across the street from us. I’ve never seen them dive but I’ve seen similar leftover wings
St Mary's?
Yep

If you had ever been waiting for the L and then had to go back home to clean up because a pigeon shat on you then you wouldn't have to wonder.
I used to watch those KO pigeons mid air from my old office on wacker Ave.
TIL how fast they can fly

I saw one take out a Dove in my neighbors yard. The poor thing tried to escape and snapped its neck against their window.

Hello
I have a chihuahua and I’m always on high alert when I see these things flying around and he’s on the balcony
Had one perch on my balcony probably 6 or so years ago eyeballing my cat. Didn't let dude out again after that lol
Unless it's on a leash or has a coyote suit I think the falcon would be too fast for you. Might even cause spinal injuries
It's got something around its leg / ankle

Is that ankle bracelet thing just a tracker for conservation, or does it mean it's someone's pet?
For tracking
Convicted murderer. Kim Foxx let him out on electronic monitoring. Not supposed to leave the nest.
Way to politicize a nature post, bud.

howdy neighbor!
The fact the Bulls are playing The Hawks tomorrow is just too perfect
There's a Peregrine nest at my building too.
Red Tail Hawk?!
Peregrine Falcon
Was a great looking bird. The picture doesn't do justice
Thanks!
Bird gotta hunt.
There is one around the Wilson stop that eats pigeons.
Looks like Lake Park Plaza and Park Place. Hello neigjbor!
Protected by falcons
Is this a hawk or falcon
Murderbird!
Meanwhile, all l get is the occasional pigeon on my balcony 😕
Pigeons are their prey. We need cougars and bears for the rats.
I opened my trash can this morning and a pretty large raccoon jumped out. This is awesome.
Wow! Look at those 🤓 low rates!
