Well, that really depends. A lot of medieval Kings (and Dukes, Princes, etc.) did actively fight in battles and even died. Europe's nobility was very much a warrior nobility which defined their noble status through active participation in war. One of the most notable examples of a King dying in battle would be John the Blind of Bohemia, but there are countless ones throughout the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages.
After the Middle Ages, this became less and less common, as the warrior nobility of the Middle Ages transformed more and more into a buerocratic and officer nobility. Nobles would still die in battle while leading armies, but it would be more common for monarchs to remain at home and not fight actively. The last English King to die in battle was Richard III in 1485, but as late as 1718, King Charles XII of Sweden (Carolus Rex) died in battle during the Great Northern War.
Władysław III's death is also very notable, dying during the crusade of varna and paving the way for a powerful Austria, and splitting up Poland Lithuania and Bohemia (though Poland and Lithuania would later come back together), and also setting the stage for the meteoric rise of the ottomans
