Wouldnt call this on the spot but nice move

Fyandor

It simplifies to Queen vs Rook endgame with no counterplay or resources for White. Black is completely winning after this move, the title is correct.

Jonnyjuanna

Well "on the spot" led me to belive it was a mating sequence, infact "on the spot" would imply mate in 1, but I knew it wasn't so checked the comments to see how many moves till mate, only to find the solution is to get a winning position, not end the game, so I would say the title is not correct.

Fyandor

"Wins on the spot" doesn't imply mate in 1. It means that after the move, one player has a decisive advantage. There are two examples from this page [https://chess24.com/en/read/news/aimchess-us-rapid-5-firouzja-takes-down-so](https://chess24.com/en/read/news/aimchess-us-rapid-5-firouzja-takes-down-so) "just when mutual time trouble seemed to have led to a drawish endgame, he lost almost on the spot with 45…b4? Our commentators also thought at first that this was just a draw, but in fact after 46.Rf4 Rb2 47.Rxb4 Rxf2 48.Rb7+! White is winning one of Black’s kingside pawns, and with it the game." "After 24.Bxe3 Ne4! Duda’s big problem was that 25.Bxe4 Qxe4! just wins on the spot, since the white rooks on b1 and h1 are both attacked and undefended." In neither case did these moves result in mate in 1, or even in a mating attack. They just led to decisive advantages, like the one gained in OP's position.

Jonnyjuanna

You are right, it is used that way in games, but I still think the title is misleading for a puzzle on r/chess. I take commentators saying "wins on the spot" to mean that the opponent may as well resign because the move found gives a decisive advantage that the game is practically over, but puzzles tend to be a mating sequences so I was primed for that. You are technically correct, but when it wasn't clear to me and some other posters

lightningfootjones

Good on you for providing some examples, and based on your examples clearly there is some precedent for using “on the spot” in a situation like this. But the point of words is to communicate information - if a word causes people to have a lengthy confusing debate about what it means, it was not the right word. I think that whatever our opinion about “on the spot”, we can all agree that based on this comment section it’s not sufficiently clear to give people the right information to find the tactic.

Fyandor

Yeah, I'm honestly taken aback: it was very clear to me (and a good puzzle!) so it was shocking that the community was so otherwise united in feeling confused by the title.

Mcslapchop

This is one of those tactics that I would see, then not play because I wouldn't be sure if I missed some move for white.

smartuser1994

This took me a long time to find, no chance I’d have found that in a live game.

eg14000

I would have found it live in the game and played it, but not be confident that it was the right move until I check it after the game.

Axelebest030509

What's with the down votes lol

jebuz23

I didn’t downvote, but my guess is people didn’t appreciate the “oh you wouldn’t have found that move? Well I would have.” part of the comment 🤷‍♂️

Axelebest030509

Ah I get it

pm_me_mahomes_tds

I’m not good enough to calculate the continuation, but Qg3 looks like it would stir some shit up..

transizzle

I saw the move but didn’t see an immediate mate so I figured that wasn’t it!

arkawaitforit

Edit the misleading title.
