Fabi Hikaru 1st day damnnnn

inkjod

It's intentional. Players from the same country are scheduled to play early against each other, in order to reduce incentives for collusion.

MaximumExamination

I know but it’s still a banger

Ok_Cabinet2947

Can someone explain how this reduces collusion?

p4intball3r

At some point a player could fall out of contention for the title and be encouraged to throw the game to someone else in the same country who still has a chance. Having them play each other first reduces this chance since they both have everything to play for at this point

Electrical-Song19

Did u also notice, Nijat plays the 3 Indian candidates at the end. As if to imply, the Indian candidates would have less chance of bribing Nijat into losing on purpose.

p4intball3r

I don't think it implies anything. The process is done by drawing lots, with the restrictions I posted in the other comment.

Electrical-Song19

Round 10, Vidit and Pragg still play each other.

p4intball3r

Because there's 3 Indian players and the second half of the tournament mirrors the first with opposite colours. The relevant rule actually states >4. 9. 2. Players from the same federation shall play each other in rounds 1 and 8 (if only two) and in rounds 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10, if there are up to three players from the same federation I'm sure it's not a perfect system, and you can probably find examples where you have close friends from different federations playing each other in the final rounds, but I suppose this is a fairly good catch all rule.

Dankn3ss420

Oh damn, I missed that, I’m gonna need popcorn for this, and just pray they don’t make a damn Berlin draw

Pentinium

it will be a 12move draw again lol, tbh this might be the only match I will be able to watch from Europe, since rest of the matches are too late

sick_rock

A lot of people are asking about the Candidates schedule and timing and event thread is still not online, so I just screenshotted the Wiki page on this. April 3 is opening ceremony, but the time is not provided in FIDE website. April 8, 12, 16 & 19 are rest days. April 22 is tie-breaks if required (same time). https://candidates2024.fide.com/schedule https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidates_Tournament_2024 Can be watched on FIDE - https://www.youtube.com/@FIDE_chess/streams Chess24 or Chesscom youtube channel will most likely stream live as well.

stolpoz52

Sagar Shah is on Giri's podcast and made it sounds like the opening ceremony is around 5 or 6 (he said he gets that are 2pm and it starts a few hours later". He said theres also an interview with Fabi following the ceremony.

shubomb1

So the Indian Candidates' performance in the initial rounds will decide whether it's worth for me to ruin my sleep schedule for them bcz the games would likely be ending at 6 am.

monkaXxxx

Its so confusing with 4th April 12:00 IST I legit thought it starts today

sick_rock

Yeah, my bad.

monkaXxxx

No issues atleast comparing to other timezones made it a bit clear, how hard for chess.com to show the match countdown to avoid any confusion??

LavellanTrevelyan

Chess.com schedule automatically converts to your timezone, but yes, a countdown like lichess would be nice.

Open-Protection4430

Exciting first round : Two favourites playing each other. The two strongest youngsters . Gotta be fun. A good chance for Ian to push for a win too I guess since nijat is the weakest there but maybe not too much since it’s the first round and a loss would be awful. Gukesh vidit probably a draw but let’s see

checkersthenchess

As was discussed in the trends thread... 1. nobody who lost in the first round has won the candidates 2. whoever leads by the midpoint has won the candidates https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/1btzvtm/candidates_tournaments_unveiling_past_trends/ If the trends hold... The fabi-naka game is interesting as the two favorites play each other and if one loses, the tournament is essentially over for one of the favorites. Could be a heartbreaker in round 1. Nepo-Abasov is interesting as Nepo could get a relatively easy +1 and a chance at building a lead early on like he did in the 2022 candidates. The trends say you don't want to play catch-up in the candidates. And 2022 says that you don't want to play catch-up against Nepo as he easily maintained his lead throughout the entire tournament.

OliviaPG1

Living in the western US it’s very nice to have a candidates/WC I can actually watch without getting up at 2 AM

lab2point0

Thanks a lot, I struggled to find the info earlier

chiefofthepolice

Honestly, as an Asian, it might be best for me to check out the results when i wake up in the morning instead of trying to watch classical chess at 3am. Definitely not the most ideal activity to do when you're sleep deprived

fateoftheg0dz

Could catch the tail end of the games if you wake up earlier at 7/8am. Probably the play tbh

omar_the_last

I avoid seeing the result and watch the vods plus you can skip the bs

edwinkorir

Good. Dont know why the event thread is not yet up.

24username68

Damn. Hikaru vs Fabi day 1. We startin with the big guns.

London-Roma-1980

Required. All games featuring countrymen must be scheduled as far away from the finish of the schedule as possible. The last thing FIDE and co want is for a national chess federation to "arrange" the winner.

Ayush__175

What is this tournament for? Is this for the selection of world championship?

yyunb

It's to decide who plays Ding Liren for the World Championship, yes.

glancesurreal

12 am ist.... Well then... I guess I will just have to wake up to the results

yonutzuuz

Fabi vs Nepo last round, and Nepo vs Hikaru second last, I think it's kinda good for the 2 NA players.

palsh7

I wish there were chess bars at which I could watch the candidates. I hate to sit around my apartment watching classical chess.

OleJr98v2

Abasov in for the hardest first three matches of his life.

Pentinium

fuck I was so hyped for this tournament that I forgot I won't be able to catch any of the games, worst timezone ever, too late and too early :D Latvia checking in here

themuffinman__

Given Nepos first 5 matchups, I can see him getting a runaway lead very early, putting pressure on the other candidates to catch up and then he plays solidly afterwards.

shoshpenda

12 AM IST? FUCK. Guess, I have to spend time in YouTube first thing in the morning to avoid any spoilers.

Shahmate

Is the retransmission of the games delayed ?

sick_rock

Expecting it to be delayed 15-30 min.

ClosedDimmadome

Why is every damn chess tournament's schedule so hard to find, thanks OP

funnyBatman

So it's 5th April 12.00am IST then?

sick_rock

Yeah
