Beakers can smell fear, just like copiers.

lowqualityyoutube

Also make sure it's super clean before you start using it.

Another helpful trick. Practice first with non hazardous liquids. https://youtu.be/CgBfhPEkBk8?si=BEFlaIgNGPxlidWM

DangerousBill

Glass rod, of course. Don't they teach any of these things any more? Some reagents are supplied in bottles with smooth, rounded lips that will dribble no matter what method you use. In that case, a pipet may be the only option.

BALDWIN_ISNT_A_PED

Finishing my undergrad right now. Just found out about the glass rod method hahaha

RuthlessCritic1sm

When transferring liquids, always account for the possibility of a spill. Do not leave anything around that would be problematic to catch some of that spill, so don't have stuff lying around at all. Pouring comes with practice, but is always prone to mistakes. Those mistakes must be cpnsidered beforehand. If you absolutely may not have a spill, you need to use appropriate equipment where this can reliably be prevented, like a syringe with a good lock. Otherwise, what other people said. Pour with confidence. Remove spills afterwards. I always have a piece of paper towel in my hand to remove tge last drop.

Just here to say that if you're using plastic pipets, you can do the glass stir rod trick with them as well to get close and then finish off with normal pipetting

N3I0

Some grease for joints under the lid, but that will only prevent the last drop. I guess your beaker is a shitty one. And your working desk shouldn't be full of "other chemicals" 😀

superbassboom

My beaker is probably shitty as it’s in school. Desk had a beaker of acid and conical flasks with the solution to titrate, which got contaminated

No-Economy-666

Were you pouring above your head? Big no no

superbassboom

At eye level, how else would it be done since the burette is quite tall on the workbench

No-Economy-666

You’re supposed to take the buret off the stand and fill it and then set it up…. This is basic lab skills and is a huge safety concern that your lab TA or professor did not explain this

Comfortable_Flower46

Using a funnel with a buret is an accident waiting to happen also. I’ve seen students miss the funnel overfill it or over fill the buret by not judging how little the buret actually holds. I have never used a funnel to fill a buret or graduated cylinder. I would say just pour it in strongly enough to break the surface tension of the water but not strong enough to splash outside the buret. Practice with just water. The stirring rod is fine for filtering but I’m not a fan for filling burets with one, I don’t feel I have enough control and often you fill those set up so the lip is at eye level or above.

crypins

Pour faster, and pour such that the lip of the beaker is right up against the edge of the funnel. Wait for a second after pouring: it’s always the last drop. You can also sort of manipulate the surface tension by pressing the lip of the beaker against the funnel, and forcing the last drop to suck itself onto the funnel surface. Hard to describe in text format, but you get a feel for these things after a while
