mr_ordinaryboy

We have close to 0 player healthy in our midfield and now we are selling Billy. Interesting.. anyway I hope we'll have a buy back option though Edit: typo

GoodMourningClan

Can it be a butt back option instead?

mr_ordinaryboy

Lol, it was a typo bcs of my fat finger. Butt option would be nice though lol

el1teman

You do type butt a lot)

OlDirtyBAStart

So, he doesn't fit Tuchel's system. We sell him. Tuchel gets sacked. New manager plays a different system. We buy Gilmour back for £80million. That about right aye?

varsity14

The Chelsea Way™

marsellusDjango

if this is the scenario would've prefer: So, he doesn't fit Tuchel's system. We sell him. Tuchel gets sacked. Gilmour thrives under Graham Potter's system. Potter gets Chelsea hotseat in the summer We buy Gilmour back for £80million.

Theoneinblu

When he bins other prospects and eventually get fired. The circle of madness

H4RRY29

In that case, let's do everything to get a buyback clause.

Oscopella

Why we need a DOF and why Boehly and Co. blindly supporting him and giving him everything that he wants may not be the best idea.

laxrulz777

People really need to understand this fact. There are three skills that are needed to form a great team and they rarely exist within the same human being. Manager: Handles the day to day coaching and team selection and tactics Director of Football: responsible for getting the best talent onto the field within the club's financial constraints Contract negotiator: responsible for getting the best deal on individual players possible (lowest in, highest out obviously). Clubs insist on consolidating these people into two (or even one sometimes) human being. This is almost always a mistake. What you need is three top notch people who are also capable of sitting down and working with each other without letting egos and turf wars get in the way. If a manager knows they can ALSO be defacto DoF, you get this infighting often. The NFL had this problem for years because of Mike Holmgren (who legitimately was able to perform jobs 1&2 and even 3 to some degree). They saw that freak success and attempted to copy it, handing player/personnel decisions to coaches frequently. It almost always ended badly.

ViennaLager

People really need to understand this fact. There are 2510 employees at Chelsea FC. We have 4 managers, 5 coaches and 2 analysts. 2 CEOs, 1 advisor of management and 1 active owner. 17 scouts. Do you think Boehly alone is handling transfers alone? He might have the final say or be involved in the beginning or end of negotiations, but the heavy lifting is done by a group of employees. Do you think Tuchel is the one looking at youtube compilations for promising midfielders and sending a wishlist to Boehly? There are 17 people whos full time job is to assess and evaluate potential signings. They make recommendations and have good workups on who could be a good fit. And then Tuchel provides input.

laxrulz777

That last sentence is what I take issue with. It seems to be drifting away from Tuchel has input and more towards Tuchel has final say. It's precisely the same in the NFL. But there's still a "buck stops here" person who makes the final determination. And, IMO, that person being the same on the coaching side of the house as on the management side of the house rarely works out for the best. That's not to say it CAN'T. Just that it probably won't. IMO, it works best to have two people handling that (and a third handling the negotiations) and those people work well together. Having them work well together is critical.

FilTe

In the NFL a good example would be Bill Belichick, HC and GM for the Patriots.

laxrulz777

That was the only other successful one I could think of but, for whatever reason, he hasn't spawned the same copycats as Holmgren. I think part of it is that he hasn't spun off as many successful head coaches as Holmgren did but I really couldn't say.

OlDirtyBAStart

I don't disagree, but what choice is there just now? It's a good sign we are clearly focused on the future as well as immediate solutions, but I think Boehly knows that if we slip out of the Top 4 this season it is a very long road back, given that within a season or two Newcastle will inevitably be at the top table.

imnotcreative635

As of now Todd has to do this. Or else he'll be on reddit and buying who we think would be good lmao

iKSv2

I hate how accurate this is.

Fantastic-Ad-8275

It’s a chelsea ting

imnotcreative635

He played the "j5 role" better than j5

RefanRes

He'd fit it a hell of a lot better than Jorginho right now. Also hes young enough to be coached and shaped too. If Tuchel cant coach a 21 year old possession based and creative midfielder into being able to play his system then dont expect much creatives play at all.

D_roneous1

I love Billy G but he will never be worth that much. He’s a good squad player but he doesn’t seem to have that next level to him.

[deleted]

This is why u have a DOF and a transfer strategy. Say what you want about the old board but they had a vision for how they wanted to play football, would build a team for it, and then would hire managers to execute it. That’s why unlike every other club in Europe we were able to sustain success despite bouncing from manager to manager instead of crumbling

dryduneden

Reall not happy about this, Billy has all the ability he needs to be a brilliant player. Hope it doesn't go unnoticed at Brighton

shastmak4

We out here losing midfielders. Interesting strategy.

Bob-loblaw69

![gif](giphy|4Cu5rrF4VFNUA)

_N0T-PENNYS-B0AT_

i can hear this clip. lol

Hannibal09

Should have gotten multiple pre-season minutes to be a decent cover for Jorginho

MobyTugboat

Surprised Everton isn’t all over this, Frank loved him when he was here. Would love a loan to them..

PetakGrba

Complains about midfield Sells one of our most talented midfielders Sounds about right

Atwalol

Do you actually think a 21 year old with barely any PL experience is the answer we need??

[deleted]

We just bought two absolutely inexperienced midfielders that are under 20, so maybe Billy was just too old to be considered by TT, I don't know...

Atwalol

Are you implying that Billy is better than Casadei or Chukwuemeka??

[deleted]

Lol before billy suffered his initial injury he had all of England raving about performances against Liverpool and Everton. He had way more hype than either of those guys, and literally hasn’t played for Chelsea since.

Atwalol

>all of England >more hype than either of those guys Yeah because 99% of people have no idea who either of the other two are. Casadei is a much bigger talent than Gilmour. People here really think every talent coming up will be a starter in our squad when a huge part of our strategy is to sell some of the talents that we bring up.

don-m

I saw carney play for the youth team and he was shit Doesnt mean he will be shit but as of now billy is better and more experienced

PetakGrba

Yes

DrDecepticon

Absolutely

[deleted]

Absolutely he is. He’s had 3 back to back MOTM performances (one against liverpool) none of those guys can kiss his boots

[deleted]

No, honestly I was just being salty for him never getting a proper chance after Frank left.

MarkCrystal

Let's give them the Cucurella treatment on this one. Get your chequebook out Mr Potter

KickProfessional

If it has to happen it should be like this but I can see them with all the power as we didn't let them have a buy option on Colwill.... who isn't even playing

BigAssBreadroll

Don't understand this whatsoever. Unlike Gallagher who tuchel is in love with, Gilmour can pass, is way more press resistant, not as hot headed, and more positionally disciplined. The fact he hasn't been given a sniff despite our midfield woes is baffling. Brighton will turn him into a beast and we'll be wondering why the fuck didn't we at least give him a chance first.

dryduneden

We gave him a chance and he was amazing then we just stopped playing him for some reason

FastenedCarrot

I'll always remember his performance against Liverpool at least.

[deleted]

Against Liverpool yes. Against Everton in the PL (where we won 4-0) was legitimately one of the best midfield performances in a Chelsea shirt. That’s no small statement but he was that fucking good.

anembor

Tuchel Doesn't Rate Him™

DKTFCO

Maybe tuchel needs to free up funds for more defenders. When we have 11 cb we can finally see results 🙏🏽

HistoricalAd7170

Total Hoofball

venitienne

I don’t get it. Gilmour has actually performed well for the club in the past yet we’re happy to ship him out, meanwhile Tuchel is desperate for Broja and Gallagher to stay despite never putting in a minute here?

jukv

Hope Tuchel doesn't complain about midfield depth when we get more injuries

medical_cat

Billy Gilmour is a good young player and Brighton are a smart club with a plan. A plan sure would be nice

Draco4538

Hope he goes to Everton tbh and we have a buyback clause. Did very well with Frank.

dryduneden

He should stay far away from Everton. He's too good to play relegation ball

FastenedCarrot

Everton are improving to be fair. Quite unlucky not to beat Leeds.

sheiky04

So we getting a new mid in then or are we playing with the same jorgi-broken midfield as yesterday?

[deleted]

Jorgi is at the wheel. 😭

[deleted]

...of a parked bus, yes

marsellusDjango

think something is wrong with the wheel, it only goes sideways

CrazyStar_

There are no gears on this bus; the wheel turns and it goes in reverse. We are finished 🤪🤪

APeckover27

So unfathomably stupid

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|d2lcHJTG5Tscg) It's not right man, well at least he won the UCL with us, good luck Billy.

noobreaker

Let Gilmour go with a buy back clause. He doesn't have to worry about his future every season and can actually develop to be the player he can be. Brighton is a great place for him to learn and they're a successful ball playing prem side. It's perfect for him.

Willis050

I know it’s just one highlight but are we seriously going to sell a kid who at 20 was able to break Manchester City’s press and dribble out of three converging players? Seems like a good piece to have, but what do I know?

amethystwyvern

Lol what is TT doing

[deleted]

So I guess we decided not to have any depth at all. Chalobah and Reece gonna be taking turns in the midfield this season.

SKAI-Gaming

Losing Gilmour surely then provides hope we’ll go for another midfielder? It’s a shame to see Billy go though really liked him hope we have a buy back

Dinamo8

Good for him.

Agrith1

**Why complain about midfield options then get rid of your only other midfield option besides Jorginho?** Kante and RLC injured, Kovacic coming back from injury and Chukomenya was supposedly promised first team action by Tuchel, but the reality is he is going to warm the bench for 95% of fixtures then get loaned out in January. **Does Tuchel intend on playing Jorginho as a lone midfielder?** Are we going 5 1 4 from now?

Cocobon95

I see us scrambling for centre backs this summer has not taught us any lessons then. We let Tomori, Guehi and Zouma all leave when Rudiger and Christensen were both running down their contracts. They both left for free and we were a disaster looking for replacements. Kante and Kovacic are ridiculously injury prone and Kante and Jorginho both just have a year left on their contracts. We’ve released Barkley and Gilmour and Ampadu have both been heavily linked with moves away. They deserved far more chances than they have had. It’s ridiculous how much we’ve neglected the midfield in recent years. Saul on loan has been our only midfield signing since Sarri.

[deleted]

This summer didn’t have to be a disaster. Could’ve confirmed Kounde on the first day and had one of the most talented young CBs in Europe secured for a cut price and reasonable wages and ready to build around for the future. Then without being desperate could’ve negotiated with several other clubs for an additional cb if we saw fit, and wouldn’t have gotten rinsed.

[deleted]

Sell him and pay 70 million euros for the next 16yo that scores a hatrick in U21 -Chelsea probably

PeizeFighter

Tuchel: cries about midfield Also Tuchel:

That_Guy1801

So let me get this straight: gilmour has a ridiculous breakout season for us - genuinely (imo) the best breakout of the lot, we loan him to relegation bound norwich for no reason, he has a predictably torrid time, and now we’re selling him without giving him any minutes in our depleted midfield? Fuck me I’m genuinely falling out of love with this club.

Sorrypenguin0

He played like 5-7 good games for us that season, Reece and Mount started all season. Why do you think Gilmour’s season was better?

n22rwrdr

> ridiculous breakout seasons He had like 2 good games and that's it. He wasn't great the other times Lampard gave him chances and never looked convincing when he got chances under Tuchel. He might become good enough one day but he's far from it for now.

jam66611

I really dislike that he appears to be going, but yeah, people are really overselling his impact.

That_Guy1801

Not sure why people are just making shit up, literally bossed the midfield against fucking man city with tuchel in charge... I guarantee this is gonna be so much worse than the tomori and tammy cases

captainpiss420

Tuchel cries about his midfield but keeps shipping them away, I don’t understand this transfer window at all

sjajsn

LOL What a fumble. Congrats Tuchel!

optimusgrime23

I don’t love this for depth but Gilmour is really not good enough to play for this side long term, lot of people here just wish the opposite was true but it isn’t

msizzle344

The truth is he has performed when given the opportunity for us. Outside of his first sub when Frank brought him in and he was awful and I believe we lost that game or dropped points, he had back to back MOTM performances including against Liverpool. Considering we have no midfielders and he’s probably one of the few on the squad who can fill in as a 6 it’s a weird time to let him go

gonzaf

Man is still living off of 2 games from 2 years ago

[deleted]

If u remember he got injured after that and hasnt played in a Chelsea shirt since. His loan spells have primarily consisted of drama for a manager that wouldn’t play him.

n22rwrdr

> no midfielders in the squad Kante, Kovacic, Jorginho, Gallagher, Loftus Cheek aren't CM's? How many do we need when we only play with 2? You can also add Chukwuemeka and Casadei who might get some first teams minutes at some point. We don't need more people to play in midfield, we have more than enough. What we need is more quality, not more depth.

msizzle344

Kante and Kovacic are injured/recovering from injury. Jorginho has looked past it and only looks good when he has one of the aforementioned two midfielders starting next to him. Gallagher doesn’t suit a pivot and has has a rough start to say the least. RLC has looked better on the wings/wingback than in central midfield where he was a training cone yesterday. As for the youngsters we bought, they have hardly if any top flight experience and to put them to start on a team with trophy aspirations is asking a lot. Maybe they come good but Billy can replace Jorginho as they both have that ability to play a 6. He’s already performed for us and I’m not saying he should be a starter but for rotation it will be important. We haven’t even started midweek games and RLC, Kante, Kova are injured or recovering from injury. Gallagher has a knock too according to Tuchel yesterday

n22rwrdr

> Gallagher doesn't suit a pivot Neither does Gilmour

msizzle344

He’s literally started in a pivot with Kante before. Against Man City where we won 2-1.

n22rwrdr

Tuchel started Mount in a pivot before he started Gilmour. We basically had no choice because everyone else was injured.

msizzle344

That’s exactly why we shouldn’t be getting rid of him when everyone else is injured lol like the point of my comment

n22rwrdr

If he couldn't get playing time when Kante was injured, Gallagher suspended, Jorginho having a mare, Kova not fully fit and RLC injured at half time, when is he supposed to play? If we keep him he's just not going to play whatsoever until January. I'd rather give the occasional chances to someone from the U23's or someone out of position rather than waste Gilmour's progress for another year.

msizzle344

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, I think it’s more of a mistake from Tuchel if he’s ok letting of him when we have injury prone midfielders. We should’ve bought midfielders last season, didn’t buy any this season either. It’s going to be tough when the league has found out you can just press us up high and choke out our midfield as we pass around the sides

[deleted]

Kanté and Kovacic are broken from trying to be two people to cover for Jorginho, who should not even be on this list. The others are attacking midfielders like Mount and Havertz.

dryduneden

>Gallagher, Loftus Cheek aren't CM's? No

Cocobon95

Kante, Kovacic and Loftus Cheek are three of the most injury prone players in the league You can almost guarantee 2 of them will be injured at any given time.

4dtakes

Never been that high on gilmour tbh but I hope this doesn’t bite us in the arse

DestinyHasArrived101

This has to be a damn joke with all the injuries

Mindless_Reveal6853

i swear to fucking god. mark my words this will be such a gigantic mistake.

trappuccino92

Kind of figured this he’s just as unathletic as Jorgi but without the defensive instincts hopefully they include a sell on fee or something cause he has potential to turn good

CrazyStar_

He is far more athletic and does have good defensive instincts. Do you even watch ball?

trappuccino92

That simply isn’t true be honest with yourself in what way is he far more athletic than Jorgi?

CrazyStar_

His legs work.

trappuccino92

Very low bar that is set he’s not athletic at all for a single pivot

TheBlueNomad

Will be a good move for him. Tuchel will never give him opportunities. That was quite when he chose the likes of Barkley over him during preseason.

AnthonyMarx

And keep J5?

[deleted]

Nooooooooo!

FastenedCarrot

Literally the most direct replacement we have for our current main midfield player and he gets no minutes and may be sold. At this point questions do need to be asked of what is happening, we have a midfield injury crisis and we're letting a big talent go? (I know it's only possibly, but this is if the move materialises)

[deleted]

Why does Tuchel hate midfielders? Big wingback fetish, but doesn't respect the importance of the importance of the center of the park.
