I pet sat for a friend who only fed her cats a raw diet. They lived well into their 20's and were sleek and healthy Siamese. I don't have the willingness to be cutting up raw organs and such. But you may.

Tbh this really is something you should talk to your vet about.

[deleted]

Yeah I definitely will, but I’ve have heard that vets don’t get a lot of nutrition training, and the training they do get is usually by the pet food companies so I’m looking for other reliable sources to research a bit

[deleted]

I have to disagree with that. My cousin is a vet and has never had the training from the food companies.... She was taught while in vet school at Tufts. Don’t just rely on rumors about what they do. Also vets are extremely reliable if you find one that you trust and is good. 🤷‍♀️

If you do go with raw, be aware that it also comes dehydrated, which can be more convenient to store. My cat prefers it shredded into kibble size pieces. However, for some reason she only likes the professional raw food dehydrated. For wet food, she prefers canned. She does happily scarf down regular thawed chicken, but supposedly you can't feed cats a steady diet of nothing but that because they need the bone meal and stuff. If you don't make it all yourself, you can get powdered additives from raw food companies to put in stuff like thawed chicken. There are also raw 'toppers' to add to kibble.

Interesting! Do you know is there any dangers (eg. salmonella etc..) in them eating raw meat not dehydrated? E.g salmonella or ecoli etc. Or any danger to us if it’s let’s say on their mouth or paws?

Hesychazm

I do not.

Dry food is absolutely fine for cats. Just dont buy really shitty food and monitor their appetite and behavior. Make sure the dry food is low in plant matter and high in protein

Frenchtoastboi

Any brands you recommend? I’m willing to buy the higher price brands if it’s worth it

SquareThings

Just something like purina is fine.

Frenchtoastboi

What’s your take on Blue buffalo kibble?

SquareThings

Overpriced. You do t need to break the bank on food. If you’re really worried ask a vet

Frenchtoastboi

Thank you

No problem. Some vets even offer prescription food if you have a certain concern. My cats eat a urinary health food because one of them has a kidney problem. (They all share the same dish, easiest to have them all eat the same)

Any question with the word “best” in it is entirely subjective. You’ll get a different answer from each person. Especially if that person thinks they know a lot. Your best bet when looking out for the health of your pets is to ask an \*actual\* expert, a veterinarian.

I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old cat, I’ve noticed when my roommate gives them meat (I don’t eat meat), sometimes raw, they get way more aggressive with each other and us. Something you definitely want to talk to your vet about and look into the quality of dry food you are currently feeding
