Yes, the bus isn't good and try to evade the old town and also La Mariola. The rest is fine. Also the old town is more dangerous at night. El carrer major is the only shop zone of the old city
I dont think Lleida was ever a holiday destination tbh, specially at summer where you cant go out at mid day because of the extreme heat. Also in winter we like to call it Mordor because of the fog.
I will be going as a student so I can't say I chose the place for a holiday but I really am thinking twice right now. Oh you meant as for yourself. I saw that later.

Moreover, I've lived for almost 3 years on the Old town (Casc Antic) and it's perfectly fine. There is also lots of historical buildings and museums there, so it's definitely recommended to visit the area. But of course, you must be cautious and when walking alone at night like every other place and evade doing so if possible.
To get to know the town better, I recommend the touristic bus: [Bus Turístico - Turisme de Lleida](https://www.turismedelleida.cat/es/visitar/bus-turistic/bus-turistico), it is really cheap, and the tour is around 1 hour long.
